They have long been associated with Bagua Zhang, an internal Chinese martial art. They are small enough to conceal within traditional Chinese Clothing and have four tips that could be sharpen and edges all over the place. One of the central curves is wrapped for hand grip, which protects the hand from attacks. They would be used as an extension of the hand in fighting, similar to how a knuckleduster might be used, and would defend against swords and spears.

In an usual twist of events I've taking an interest in this weapon for hema purposes as it makes for a great off hand weapon for an arming sword. Reason being I didn't like parrying daggers and I wanted to stab a dude with my buckler this does that well.
