I knew John when he was in his high school jazz band Fairport Convention here in his hometown of Columbia, SC. I also got to share a stage with him a couple of times during a blues jam at a club. He was playing with Cameo then and had become a thunder drummer. I never got to share a stage with him or get another bear hug from him again. I didn't know him as well as some but I came to know a terrific drummer and person. I have always remembered him that way and will continue to do the same. Thank you John for those memories.

Great loss to the drumming community smh. He was different and genuine. In this age of youngsters becoming more indulged in gospel chops and licks, John stood out with funkiness. RIP Funk Man
Great drummers never lose the beat when dropping a stick, but I have never seen it turn into an on the fly invention of the sickest beat ever and accidentally revealing that you could not be human at the same time. Impossible to make my point properly here.
Incredible ear and technique but undoubtedly matched by if not bettered by heart and soul. What a musician. I'm glad I'm not religious cos I'd have a real hard time trying to fathom his taking from us to be left with the likes of Kayne West/Donald Trump et al!
