    I love oversized pens. A nice affordable choice is the Esterbrook oversized Estie. I find myself using it more than my Namiki Emporer, much though I love having finally gotten my grail pen (which actually did feel like a bargain in vermilion).

    I purchased from you all the diplomat aero in green as soon as it came in and absolutely love it. I have grown quite fond of oversized pens - and the Aero and Edison Collier are my two go to pens. I have the Jinhao 159 with a Goulet nib …it worked great at first but now leaks around the nib/section and can’t get it to not leak despite all the tricks. So for now the aero abs collier keep me happy. Enjoyed this podcast; kudos you guys!

    For my arthritic hand, I like the bigger pens. Great list guys. Of the 6 here, I have the Pilot Custom Urushi in vermillion, the Diplomat and the Mithos in orange and black.

      Two years late but have to tried out the "Tombow Egg", I've heard it's pretty good for people with arthritis due to their large diameter but very short length, although the original is not being made there are Chinese clones available here and there, but those do need some TLC to get going sometimes

    For reference, it is exactly stainless steel that changes color depending on the temperature. Titanium does it as well but I don't see too many pens made out of that.

    The Opus 88 Demonstrator is big with a thick section, a #6 nib, a pretty and kind of striking design, and a decent price. It seems like they are trying to replace it with a newer model with a #5 nib, which makes me happy I got one before it's too late.

      I have a Picnic (#5 nib - feels like the little brother of the Jazz), a Demonstrator, and a Holiday Jazz. My preferences have evolved over the last two years. The Jazz is currently my favorite, but I still want an Omar (the cracked ice on the cap plus the translucent barrel just speaks to me) - and the Bela looks unusual, but feels great in the hand. I recently came across a photo of the Danitrio Hyotan. Similar design, very different market segments obviously. The red finish on the Omar makes me happy.

      @@mge2696 I could be totally wrong, and I hope I am. I thought I read that the Halo was intended as a replacement for the old Demonstrator. As an aside, although it is often referred to as the Koloro Demonstrator, the only thing it has in common with the Koloro is that they are both eyedroppers with a shutoff valve. The Koloro is smaller overall and has a smaller section and a #5 nib. It does have those lovely Ebonite accents, though.

    Finally remembered to come back and thank you for this segment. As a tall person with very large hands fit is very key for me. I did end up buying the Maiora Mithos in black and Love it! I may like it more than my Meisterstuck 149. Though all things equal my 149 has a broad nib and the Mithos a medium nib. The medium yowo nib was surprisingly good with ink flow but also writes finer than i anticipated. Thinking about buying the orange and black one too. The Namiki/Pilot custom urushi in vermillion with squared off ends is my 😍 next level pen. Not so expensive to use everyday which if i owned anything more expensive in the Namiki line I’d be more guarded about.
    Thanks again.

    Whew…and *this* is why I stopped at the Pilot Custom 823. (Well, two 823s…my "brakes" apparently weren't as good as I thought.) It's as large a pen as I can see myself handling, and I love it to pieces. But, oh, that red Namiki...

    I would like to add two pens not mentioned:
    The Conklin All American. These pens are affordable and come with a range of different nibs.
    For the not so affordable pen, I would like to recommend the Montegrappa Otto Extra. This is massive and weighty. It comes with a beautiful stacked black and white celluloid, Sterling Silver clip and trim and comes with a offering of 14K nibs of varying widths. I believe it is still available by special order.

    Looks like you need to start carrying Ranga pens! I have one of their Giant 9B models and it's huge and beautiful (I reviewed it recently) and writes wonderfully, and its bigger and WAY less expensive than most of the pens you mention. Their Splendor models is pretty big too... and maybe the 5? Anyway... wonderful pens and a great company to work with.

    Brian and Drew I have a question. I currently have a TWSBI Vac700R filled with Diamine Red Dragon. I really like this shade of red. My question is, do you clean the pen before refilling or just refill and write-on?

    • @DerekManuel
      @DerekManuel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say anything for the Vac700R in particular, but a general rule of thumb for any fountain pen is you should clean it out with water if you are switching inks, and you should clean it every 2-3 fills even if you only use one ink in it.

    Some cheaper ones I like are the Jinhao 159 (metal clone of the Montblanc though nib qc varies) and the Wing Sung 699 (Pilot 823 clone, can be piston or vacuum).
    Wancher has a large lacquer pen iirc around 200.

  • @jasondaniel918

    My question is probably painfully naive. The "Mayora Mytho" (is that spelling correct?) pens look all but identical to some O/S Delta FP's that I have. Is there a connection between Delta and the current manufacturer? I had thought the Delta folks had reinvented themselves and become Santini Italia.
    I am in my 70's and retired military. I had trauma to my writing hand (right) while on active duty - many years ago. I am very glad to still have my right hand, even though it does not work too well. The O/S FP's are a God send to me. I can write quite well with them. My "assembly" of pens (I hesitate to call them a collection) include the Pelikan M-1000, MB 149, Sailor KoP, as one would expect, I suppose. My favorite current production pen is Esterbrook's O/S Estie. The price is a bit high, but so is the quality. The pen is comfortable in my hand, and very easy to use, even with my physical impediments. Most of my O/S pens have gold nibs, yet the Estie's steel nib is of very good quality, and, in my demented mind, comparable to the gold nibs. I hope more folks discover the quality of the reborn Esterbrook pens.*
    * = I do NOT own stock in Esterbrook, nor am I a compensated endorser. Just a happy customer. 😍

      Jinhao does make the 159 in plastic. It’s called the X159 and weighs in around 28 grams, according to reviews here on TH-cam. It also has a #8 size nib. When is GPC going to carry it?

    My friend very simply killed the pen in the KOP - during the call, the hand twitched with a blow to the edge of the table and the nib folded 120 degrees. Restore as it was not possible. So, alloy 21K is like plasticine - you need to be very careful with them!

    • @DerekManuel
      @DerekManuel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can destroy any nib if you're careless enough. That said, 21K gold is quite soft. Nibmeisters seem to believe 14K gold is the best material for a nib and 18K is pretty good. 21K is probably too soft, and only sells because consumers of high-end pens think higher gold content is necessarily better.

    Are we all pronouncing Maki-e wrong?
    I looked up e in Japanese. It says e is never pronounce ay. (pasted below)
    Can someone who speaks the language chime in?
    Basically, a Japanees "e" is pronounced like "step". A Japanese "e" is never exactly pronounced as "ay" as in "stay". However, sometimes it is pronounced as "e-e" meaning two "e"s, or in other words a lengthly version of "e". For English speakers, this may sound like "ay".
