Wow, what a lovely compliment, thank you! We're delighted that you got so much enjoyment from following our journey. It makes the filming and editing all the more worthwhile.
Dear Daphne, My husband and I have followed your entire tour from the North Sea to the Adriatic with all episodes. We live in northern Germany and it is interesting to see the impressions of Germany in particular captured and described from your perspective. We especially like your video style, which is confident and routine. Your videos are very well photographed and commented. My husband watches a lot of cycling travel videos and very few are as professionally done as yours. We love Frank's distinctive one-word sentences and your English pronunciation of German place names. We have cycled parts of your route ourselves, but 25 years ago. It's nice to see a lot of it again now. We admire that you dare to do such trips without an e-bike at your age. Respect! Interested to know how much time you needed to plan the cycling trip? Keep doing such wonderful tours and let us share them with you on video. We will remain your fans. Stay healthy and best regards Jana and Arik
Hello Jana and Arik, thank you so much for your lovely comments. We're delighted that you were able to follow along on this ride with us and probably see many familiar places. My mispronunciation must give you a few laughs! Glad to hear the video is coming across well as I'm not exactly very experienced at creating them, but I do enjoy making them. It's funny, others have commented on Frank's few words, but let me tell you he has lots to say away from the camera!! We had originally planned to do this trip in 2020 but had to postpone due to the pandemic. So we had plenty of time to read up on the route, get any necessary maps and figure out exact distances so we could gauge how many days to allow, as we booked a return flight. Apart from our initial hotel in Amsterdam, we didn't make any accommodation bookings in advance, so that part was easy. Sending you both warmest wishes from Canada.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful adventure. All 9 episodes were a pleasure to watch. I loved your light, informative tone and positive approach and curiosity. I felt like a friend along for the ride! Can’t wait until your next adventure.
I’m selfish. I wished you guys go further. Thank you Daphne and Frank for sharing your lovely stories. Good luck with your future adventures but take care
As they say, all good things come to an end! Thanks for following along on the journey and for your encouraging comments. We hope we'll have another journey to share in the future. You take care too.

Wonderful from start to finish and beautifully narrated. Truly inspirational. Thank you so much for taking us with you both….. Can’t wait for the next one!
Hi Daphne and Irwin - thank you so much for sharing your wonderful trip. I cycle a lot and love watching this type of touring. By far yours was the most entertaining and educational - absolutely fantastic. Best regards to you and Irwin
Fell upon this series by chance I'm so glad I did. This is one of the best travel series I have watched. The cinemphotography was superb, the music choices excellent and your narrating was fantastic. Absolutely brilliant. Thank you.😊😊
Thanks Daphne, flying to Basel on May 15th and doing first leg to Neuf Brisach. Will branch off to Amsterdam where I will meet up with my wife Rena. Really looking forward to it. Apart from some cooking utensils I have the rest of the gear assembled. The advice is much appreciated. Let us know when yourself and Frank plan the next adventure 😀👍👏
Thank you so much - so glad you found the videos and actually found them binge-worthy!!! 😁 Also lovely to hear from another "youngster" like ourselves! Greetings to you from Canada!
Well done, Daphne and Frank. It looked like a fantastic trip. Your beautifully filmed and narrated videos have really inspired my wide and me. We have very much enjoyed watching and are planning a shorter trip next year as a result.
Thank you so much! It's really gratifying for us to know that sharing these videos encourages others like yourselves to plan a cycle trip. And also as a relatively "rookie" video-maker, it's good to hear that they're coming across ok. Good luck with your trip next year!
Found your channel via searching for info on the Via Rhona. Have now just finished this series and already starting to think of incorporating the alps to Adriatic into a future trip of my own. Thank you for putting what must be a great deal of effort into your videos, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching this series and look forward to your future adventures. I turn 58 next month and next summer will be taking my first bicycle tour, there must be something about our age that makes us want to slow down and take more time with our travels 😁
58 is a great age to start cycle touring! And yes, you can't go wrong by choosing the Alpes to Adriatic at some point - it's one of the best we've experienced so far. You're right - it does take quite a lot of time to make the videos, although I really enjoy the process. But it's awesome when I hear from people like yourself that you've enjoyed them! Best of luck with your inaugural cycle tour net year!!
Hi Daphne and Frank, greetings from Cork in Ireland. Finished my solo journey from Basel to Amsterdam. The weather wasn’t as good as the weather you had in your trip but had a fantastic time meeting some wonderful people along the way. I had a lovely stop In Bacharach and actually stayed 2 nights. It took me around 17 days going at a leisurely pace. Took your advice on campsites and really enjoyed 1000 mile camping in Remagen. I have a huge interest in history so soaked it all up. My wife Rena joined me in Amsterdam which was great. Again thanks for your fantastic videos, they were a huge help. Planning my next trip to Brittany in 2025 to celebrate my 70th birthday. Look forward to hearing more of your travels Liam
Liam it's great to hear you had a successful trip and found it so enjoyable. Yes there's certainly lots of places to keep a history lover entertained along the route. Really great to hear back from you, and now you'll enjoy planning the next one. No better way to see in the next decade!! Cheers!
Thank you Daphne and Frank for the very informative and well filmed and produced series!! And most of all very inspiring I’ll be heading off on this route. Like you I have discovered cycle touring later in life and LOVE it! Happy cycling. 😊
Hi Paul, it's so good to hear that you too have taken up cycle touring "later in life", and that we might have inspired you with this route! Glad to hear you enjoyed the videos and I hope you have a great time whenever you head off. Would love to hear how it goes. Happy Trails!
Hello Daphne, it was an epic ride. A wonderfull route, very nice videos (informative too). It was one of the videos I looked forward too. And it gave some inspiration for future travelling/cycling. A pitty it comes to an end. Hope to see more of you in the future. 👍🚵♂️🚴♀️🇳🇱🇪🇺🍾🍺
As always, thanks for the comment Martin. Yes, all good things come to an end, and even Frank and I enjoyed re-living the trip while making the videos! Thanks for following along and hopefully we'll get to share another trip sometime in the future
Well done Daphne and Frank. You smashed it out of the park with this fantastic series. Really loved the back story and detail of the towns you visited. You are both very inspirational people. Keep enjoying life every day.
Many thanks Daphne and Frank - watching the videos of your adventure has been very enjoyable, very interesting and absolutely delightful (and waiting for the next episode to appear has been full of anticipation). 😊
Excellent job Daphne on the videos. I thoroughly enjoyed them. My husband and I are in our sixties and we too love cycling adventures all over the world. This January we go to Thailand to cycle.
Thanks Daphne and Frank, I really enjoyed all ten episodes of this fantastic series, way to go! I was attracted to your videos because I have ridden a number of times in the Netherlands, and also along the Rhine from Mainz to Dusseldorf. My NL trips have mainly been relatively short day or so trips from Amsterdam. My German trip was along the path that hugs the Rhine over the course of five days, with short forays into some towns and cities along the way. I was thinking of maybe simply following the Rhine from its source in Switzerland to Rotterdam and the North Sea and touring Zealand and the coast, but will now think more about ranging farther afield now that I see how it can be done! Cheers, and safe travels!
@@Boswell365 Thank you so much! We love it when we hear that these videos inspire others and give ideas for a future ride. Appreciate you sending the comment, and happy riding!
Chapeau!!!!! What a lovely end to your long tour. You've put a lot of Kms in those legs. I've enjoyed every episode and really hope you do something like it again and share the journey. Many thanks for the time and effort in filming and editing the series.
So nice to hear that people are following our adventure and enjoying the videos - thanks for watching and letting us know - makes the whole filming and editing process very gratifying!
Also would be wonderful to hear about your learnings from your journeys if you have the chance - recommendations for route planning, finding and making lodging reservations, camping - things to look out for, best practices, etc. Although you do a nice job sharing some of these in your videos : )
Thank you for a great and inspiring series! I dont know why there isnt more likes on these. I think Im going to try Amsterdam to Barcelona through France...who knows?! Have Fun!
Hi Ross - thanks for your comment! Glad you enjoyed it. Amsterdam to Barcelona should be a great ride - lots of different possible routes there. Hope you do and and enjoy it!
What an amazing adventure! You and Frank are such an inspiration. Your videos are highly entertaining and informative. Really good production values! At 58, I’m also just getting i to cycling and bikepacking, planning to start touring next summer. I’m learning a great deal from your experiences, so thank you for sharing! What’s the next big adventure? Can’t wait to see what you & Frank get up to next!
Hi and thank you for your lovely comment! Delighted to hear you've enjoyed the videos. I too was 58 when Frank and I did our very first cycle tour, and we enjoy it so much - there's no better way to travel. I'm sure you will have some great adventures. We haven't decided where our next one will be yet.
what an inspiering film you made, as keen long distance bikers we plan to make a long tour next year to celebrate our pension. we might recognise the both of you! thank you so much, love from Amsterdam!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the videos - I loved making them and re-living the ride. Sounds like you have big plans for your retirement, and if you ride the Cyclovia Alpe Adria, I know you won't be disappointed! Happy Cycling!
Thank you for your series of videos they’ve been very enjoyable to watch and informative for my tour along part of the river Rhine this summer . Good luck with your next tour 😊
Thank you Frank and Daphne for a wonderful adventure. I just love your informative and laid back stories. I'm looking forward to your next adventure. :)
We're so glad you enjoyed following our adventure - your comments have been very encouraging! I hope we'll have another adventure to share one of these days.
Great set of videos. I am impressed at the quality of the video - no hand shake and nicely put together. You did a great job with the narration and music as well. If the weather is good I hope to ride the Rhone cycle path in a couple of weeks.
Thank you so much Richard! I have to give credit to my GoPro camera and its amazing stabilisation feature that works magic on shaky footage (and I have no affiliation with the company). Hope you get to do the Rhone ride, and have a great time! Best wishes
Hi Daphne Greetings from Ireland. Watched all the videos and thoroughly enjoyed each one. I’ve enjoyed cycling for many years but plan to do the eurovelo 15 next May. Thanks to you both for convincing me to do it. Did I detect a touch of an Irish accent especially when you mentioned James Joyce. I wish you all the best for your future plans. Chapeaux
Hello Liam, lovely to hear from Ireland! So glad you liked the video series and that it might even have influenced your own cycle plans - we love hearing that. Yes, I grew up in Sligo so you detected correctly, although Canada has been home for a good many years now. Best of luck to you with your future cycling adventures!
Ahh yes, that feeling of not wanting the trip to end mentality, but physically ready for it to end is an odd feeling for sure. I experienced a similar feeling at the end of both trips across North America. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful journey. You guys rock! I’m so inspired by you two. Take care
I watched every episode. It was so relaxed and enjoyable. You are so kind and friendly. And thanks for the story behind the buildings. Thanks for sharing. Good luck! Greetings, Marlouke (the Netherlands)
Thank you Daphne and Frank for sharing your beautiful journeys. We've been planning routes based on some of our favorites from your trips! Beautiful cinematography; very interesting, humorous and entertaining storytelling and narration; great editing - so well done. While the result is due to your great talent and passion, love to know which photography equipment you use - camera, lens, tripod, mic, smartphone, action cam, selfie stick, data storage, backup batteries and editing software. Thank you again!
Thank you so much for your wonderful compliments! It's great to know that the videos are providing useful information as well as being at least a little bit entertaining! Video-making is very much a new learning process for me. When we started touring a few years ago, of course it never crossed my mind that I'd want to make videos. So gradually I've started making more effort to record footage on the road. We recently got a GoPro hero 10 which is a game changer for me. The images are so amazingly stable even when I'm holding it in my hand and moving it around. Most of the time I'm just using a GoPro "Shorty" small extender handle/tripod and holding it in one hand as I cycle. That serves as a sort of selfie-stick as well. Occasionally I'll use a chest harness thing if I know I need two hands on the handlebars (in busy traffic, tricky terrain or going down a long hill). I do have an attachment accessory on my helmet too, but haven't used that as much lately. I us a noise canceling wind shield (a foam cover) to help reduce wind noise while riding, and carry with me a couple of spare batteries and several extra sd cards (mine are 128GB). For the last 2 month trip, I used 3 of those sd cards, although I think I had 5. Will use more space in future as I realize I should be shotting at a higher resolution. Never really needed more than 2 batteries per day though. We did also use our phones for some still shots and short videos (we happen to have Pixel phones - not the latest models). I did have a small Canon G7X camera with me on the 2022 trip as well, used that for some off-the-bike shots sometimes. I also have a small gorilla-type tripod which can be used with either camera and phones. They're great for attaching to tree branches, posts or anything really. Turns out so far I haven't needed anything extra for data storage as I had enough sd cards. But I had purchased a solid state drive (SanDisk 1TB extreme portable SSD), a tiny compact thing in case I needed it. Would probably have needed to take my sd cards to a camera shop, or borrow a computer/laptop, to use that, as I don't carry a laptop on tour. All my editing is done with Adobe Premier Elements, but there are many different softwares out there. I taught myself using TH-cam tutorials, etc (am am still learning!) Hope I've answered most of your questions. Have fun planning your next trip!
I was going to ask about your camera gear as well as your videos are so well shot and the footage so stable, amazing that it’s all done on a GoPro. Thanks for the info.
@@daphnebehindbars Thank you very much for sharing your equipment and process. Again I'll say it's the person's talent and passion above equipment, and the fact that you are able to produce such beautiful results with fairly simple and inexpensive equipment is a testament to that. You're an amazing storyteller and I sincerely appreciate you taking us along. Wanted to ask: 1) Do you think a gimbal selfie stick would improve your results? (Does your GoPro shorty selfie stick provide any stabilization, or is all stabilization provided by the GoPro? I've been wondering if a gimbal selfie stick tripod is needed and worthwhile). 2) Beyond shooting at a higher resolution as you suggested, which 1-2 other equipment changes do you think would benefit you the most?
The GoPro provides the stabilization - it is an option that you can turn on or off, but I would suggest leaving it on all the time. Personally I don't feel I need to add a gimble for my purposes. And with practice, one gets better at "panning" the camera smoothly - the GoPro takes care of removing the bumps and jerky movements. Sometimes it would be useful to have a full-size tripod so you have more options for positioning the shots. But personally I'm going to stick with my gorilla-type small tripod because it's light and compact when I'm on the bike, and you can get creative by attaching it to trees or fences. The one thing I'd love to add to my arsenal is a drone! That would be fun for getting different perspectives on the landscape. But I'm sure I'd crash it or lose it! But maybe one day.....
@@daphnebehindbars Thank you, I'm pleasantly surprised the GoPro stabilization is that good - and I'd guess it's similar in the competing action cameras. With your results I'd agree you don't need a gimbal (there's a travel channel I think called Suitcase Monkey/s and all their travel videos are filmed on iphone and I think without a gimbal, with hand panning and in-phone stabilization). While I've not piloted a drone yet myself, I have friends who have, and I think with a little practice at home and not taking chances with weather conditions and terrain (avoiding high winds, long distances over water, cliffs), I think you'd do very well with one.
Hi Daphne Again thank you for your fantastic video. I’m booked to do the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. Planning a mixture of camping and hotels!!! Any particular campsites that both you and Frank would recommend on the route Kind Regards Liam
Appreciate the comment thanks Liam. You didn't say when you were heading off on your trip, so if it's not too late, here are a few of the campgrounds that we used: Camping L'Ile du Rhin (Neuf Brisach, France), Camping Plage du Staedly (Roeschwoog, France), Camping Durlach (Karlsruhe, Germany), Campingplatz Wilhelm (11kn south of Koblenz, Germany), Camping Golden Mile (Remagen), Camping Berger (south of Cologne), Camping De Rijnhof (Millingen, Netherlands by border with Germany), Camping Boomgaarde (west of Wijk bij Duurstede), Camping Bovenstad (Schoonhoven, along the Lek river), Camping Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland), Camping Zuidduinen (north of the Hague). And one hotel we particularly enjoyed was Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen, Netherlands - lovely hotel but the WW2 history part makes it extra special. Hope you have a great trip!
I followed many cycling adventure on TH-cam…YOU ARE THE BEST ONE !. I have a question for you: which mapbook or guide you used on you ride from North to Adriatic Sea….from a fan from Quebec,Canada 😊
Wow, what a wonderful compliment, thank you Alain! We're delighted that you enjoyed our journey. Of course for this trip, because we used parts of a few different routes, we had several different guidebooks and maps. If you wouldn't mind going back and looking at the description blurbs of Episodes 1, 5 and 10 you will find, under "resources", the names of the maps and guides we used for EV15, EV 6 and the Alpe Adria Radweg. Hope that helps 😊
Hello Daphne and Frank. Thank you for the beautiful videos. My wife and I are doing alpe adrea Salzburg to grado next year Can I ask where did you get the map book for that section of trail?
So glad you liked the videos. The map book Alpe Adria Radweg is published by Bikeline and can be purchased on Amazon. So far it's only in German, but the maps have a key in English as well as German and French. We wish you a great ride!
Wow, wow, what an adventure. Watching your adventure was like reading a wonderful book. You just didn't want it to finish. Such a joy to watch.

Very well made Documentary… congratulations
Thank you!
Great. Watched all the videos too. Greetings from the English Cotswolds. Happy cycling :)
Delighted that you enjoyed the videos. It's really cool knowing where people are watching from, so thanks for watching and letting us know!
You've inspired my plans for next June, thank you.
Glad to hear we might have inspired you! And now you've seen how we got our bike boxes. Good luck with your trip next year.
The story about the mummies was amazing! And, that was a well-earned beer at the end.
Yes, what a bizarre story it was! That beer went down soooo well!
Can’t believe frank wore a backpack the entire trip instead of having front panniers for balance!
Thank you for your series of videos they’ve been very enjoyable to watch and informative for my tour along part of the river Rhine this summer . Good luck with your next tour 😊
Glad you enjoyed the videos and even better if you got some tips for your own trip. Have a great time along the Rhine!
Best wishes
Hi Daphne
Greetings from Ireland.
Well done, enjoyed following along.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you both so much for letting us bike along with you, amazing! Sad to see this journey end.
Our pleasure. You must feel a bit like we did when we got to the end in Grado!
Take care
Yes, you know the feeling. Thank you so much for following along. And we wish you lots of fun on your upcoming trip - we'd love to hear all about it!
Always enjoy your videos; wish I could go but my allergies are bad enough here in Ontario. Thanks for sharing.
Sorry to hear that, but so glad you can come on our virtual rides with us!
I watched every episode. It was so relaxed and enjoyable. You are so kind and friendly. And thanks for the story behind the buildings. Thanks for sharing. Good luck! Greetings, Marlouke (the Netherlands)
What a lovely thing to say! Thank you and glad you enjoyed our journey!
I taught myself using TH-cam tutorials, etc (am am still learning!)
Hope I've answered most of your questions.
So I had a nice ride with you from sea to sea, I didn't get wet and my ass didn't hurt either. It was nice.😀
Glad you were able to follow along from the comfort of couch Jirka! Hope you enjoyed the mummy story!
Hi Daphne
Again thank you for your fantastic video. I’m booked to do the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. Planning a mixture of camping and hotels!!!
Any particular campsites that both you and Frank would recommend on the route
Kind Regards
Liam
Appreciate the comment thanks Liam.
You didn't say when you were heading off on your trip, so if it's not too late, here are a few of the campgrounds that we used:
Camping L'Ile du Rhin (Neuf Brisach, France), Camping Plage du Staedly (Roeschwoog, France), Camping Durlach (Karlsruhe, Germany), Campingplatz Wilhelm (11kn south of Koblenz, Germany), Camping Golden Mile (Remagen), Camping Berger (south of Cologne), Camping De Rijnhof (Millingen, Netherlands by border with Germany), Camping Boomgaarde (west of Wijk bij Duurstede), Camping Bovenstad (Schoonhoven, along the Lek river), Camping Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland), Camping Zuidduinen (north of the Hague).
@@daphnebehindbars thank you for this quick reply..it will be a pleasure to view them again..and to plan my new trip..
Hello Daphne and Frank. Thank you for the beautiful videos. My wife and I are doing alpe adrea Salzburg to grado next year
Can I ask where did you get the map book for that section of trail?
So glad you liked the videos. The map book Alpe Adria Radweg is published by Bikeline and can be purchased on Amazon. So far it's only in German, but the maps have a key in English as well as German and French. We wish you a great ride!
@@daphnebehindbars thank you.
