    A beautiful and peaceful looking city. I love Japan and Japanese culture, although I can only admire it from afar. Greetings from London, UK.

      Yes, he had four children.
      The two children are from British women. and two children born to Japanese women. In addition to that, It is said that Anjin also had a hidden child. In Nagasaki, where he last lived as a trader, some people say that I am a child of Anjin.
      In Hemi, Yokosuka, where Anjin received land from Toranaga, there are many people with Anjin's surname ``Miura.'' There may be some descendants of Anjin among them.

      Hi! If you want to follow Will Adams path in Japan, read my post above. Too many places in Kyoto but Kiyomizudera and Kinkakuji, Osaka Castle and Himeji Castle are excellent. Hiroshima and Miyajima (Itsukushima) are excellent. My 22nd trip is this July!

      When you come to Kyoto, we recommend staying at a "Shukubo".
      Shukubo is a casual style of temple stay that you can experience in historic temples in Japan. you can experience the actual history of the shogun's era and the "Zen" culture. It's a special space that the average tourist can't experience, and people who know it love it.
      They basically accept everyone regardless of nationality or religious belief, making it an amazing accommodation option for anyone who is interested in a unique way of stay.

    If anybody has the misfortune to find themselves in Lord Miura’s birthplace of Gillingham in Kent, there is a William Adams/Japan festival there every September, I believe.

      I’ve never been to it myself, despite growing up near there (I’ve lived in Odawara for nearly 20 years), but it looks like a fun mix of o-matsuri and country fête. The local Japanese society participates and I think they have been known to wheel out a naval cannon.

      @@Jim_mears I see, you were in Odawara City near by Ito City.
      Is there also naval gunfire? I'd like to go see it someday. Ito City is a sister city with Gillingham, UK, and exchange students seem to deepen their friendships on a regular basis.

      Were you in the US Navy?
      Jodoji Temple in Yokosuka, where Anjin's memorial tomb is located, has connections not only with Britain but also with the United States.
      The temple bell was taken over by the U.S. military during the war, but it was discovered in Atlanta city and returned to Japan. Last year, a ceremony commemorating the return of the temple bell was held at this temple, with Rear Admiral Karl Lati, commander of the U.S. Navy in Japan, participating and praying for the friendship between the two countries. And also the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club recently held a concert at Jodoji Temple.
      All we wish a love and peace.

    Interestingly, John Adams was the last survivor of the mutiny on HMS Bounty. I don't believe there was any family connection between him and Will Adams of a century before.

      I agree. Anjin and John Adams lived about 150 years apart, so I don't think they are related at all.

    Background music

    Just think about how different history would have been if that dude hadn't sailed from Europe to Japan.

      I think it affected both foreign policy and domestic war style in Japan at that time.
      We wonder how useful the weapons brought by Anjin were in the decisive battle of Sekigahara. Many people have talked about the possibility of how much it influenced the outcome, but it is recorded that the spear was the main weapon at the Battle of Sekigahara. However, this weapon continued to be used after that, and even became an important weapon during the attack on Osaka Castle.
      The National Diet Library of Japan has records of the weapons found on Anjin's ship Lifde.
      19 large cannons
      12 small cannons
      500 guns
      5000 shells
      Gunpowder 2500kg
      steel armor
      As Toranaga's diplomatic advisor, Anjin suppressed the expansion of Portuguese influence and provided Toranaga with latest weapons, which undoubtedly had a considerable influence on Toranaga's plans and some of Japan history.

      All commercialized dramas and movies are dramatized.
      Entertainment and historical facts are different fields, so if you want to see detailed historical facts, I think it's better to watch educational videos rather than dramas.
      In Japan, the national broadcasting station broadcasts educational program with some videos supervised by historical researchers. Unfortunately, that's only in Japan.
