    It's a masterpiece.
    According to WorldCat, the book is held in 168 libraries, and was made into a movie, also called Moffie, by Oliver Hermanus in 2019.

    Worth a watch, growing up and living in South Africa, it was compulsory to do National Service after we finished our Matric.
    I was one of those who experienced exactly this...

    In that southern Angola bush war, they also fought side by side with other races, including blacks, against the enemy. I also know because I was there. It would have also been more historically accurate if that Sergeant was a Corporal, a two-liner.

      You should write a book or let someone interview you. That would be a fascinating story to hear.

    • @GoodVideos4
      @GoodVideos4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Someone did once interview me, and then added it to a book he wrote, about it. And, quite a number of books have been written about it.
      I have a good long term memory, and into creative writing. I did once start writing down all I could remember about it, got about a third of the way, and then moved on to other things.

      There is a student-made film called "At thy call"on TH-cam where the drill instructor is a corporal. I thought I read on the Wikipedia page for the SADF that there was not segregation. However, a regular at work who is colored (mixed-race in the US) told me that because he was not white he was not ineligible for infantry, only for support staff. However, he said that whether a particular unit was integrated or not was at the discretion of it's commander.

    • @GoodVideos4
      @GoodVideos4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Segregation may have been the case in South Africa, including basic training, but not on the border.

    From what I can see, there was not a unit with that beret colour and badge combination. The closest to it being Infantry, with that badge and greet beret. The black berets incidentally were Intelligence Corps and Mechanics (nickname Tiffies.) Maybe it was intentional in the movie, so as not to indicate a specific unit. The black beret could also have a racial symbolism.

    • @GoodVideos4
      @GoodVideos4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Different beret badge colours in the South African and American Armies, obviously.
      The South African Special Forces one, and Parabats, being purple.

  • @stanstokovic2792

    Having served (conscripted) in the SADF 83-85 there are some parts that are realistic but the rest is typical exaggerations -( not going to get into the whole gay part) white supremacists etc. we were 17 and 18 year olds 1 - the part at railway station that would not happen. We fought along blacks and if we were caught doing what those guys did in that scene we would be in deep trouble . 2- goodness knows what unit this was supposed to be .. the insignia does not match any SADF unit that I remember. The title Moffie is equivalent to what Americans refer to pussy " don't be such a pussy or sissy" in SA " don't be such a moffie" .. but with gay connotations. Anyway, I need to watch this movie to be able give better feedback

    I thought the story line had such potential but this movie is an utter failure. This is a tale of brutal cruelty, racism, homophobia all rolled into one and believe me, it is not pretty. I'm not sure what the movie was supposed to tell me. I only saw a visualization of things I already knew or assumed. And the ending? Was it purposely vague or wasn’t it? I’m not sure and really don’t care. Regardless of what the trailer says, this is not a masterpiece in my opinion!

      @@Shinobi33 I don't understand why people and basically men and straight having an issue when a film has a gay love story. It is part of life. In life you have gay love stories lesbian love stories, straight love stories. NO one is forcing anything. The problem is your perception.

      @@yannos2007 I don't have a problem with gay people. I have a problem with the gay and leftist agenda being pushed on us by the film and Television industry. Oh and btw if you think these rich liberals care about gay or any people in general you're sadly mistaken. Any time a gay man or woman comes out against a liberal issue they're ostracized and targeted for abuse. So what's your response now?

      Read 1-2 verses in front, You shall not mix your fabrics, eat pig and a bunch more stuff before that so if you want to pick and choose from the bible follow it to the bone and not the surface, please and thank you.

      You are quoting from a book that depicts a talking snake, a man having survived being swallowed by a whale, and a human being turning into a salt pillar, not to mention the legitimization of the owning of slaves, incest, racism, etc. THAT book?
