@@crux_crusader6945 thats true. Sadly its also here in Germany a lot easier to get a clone than an original G3, bcs only hunters are allowed to own ex-full automatic rifles. A sportshooter can only own the PSG1- if he has the money for it, or especially those Turkish clones...
I served in the Bundeswehr from 1991-1992 (4.Pz.Gren.Btl.162) and my weapon of choice was the G3. Mine was built in 1969 and still had an old wooden buttstock. On our first shoot we had three rounds to set the aim and my rifle was the only one that hit where you aimed. Of course, the recoil is enormous, but if you're well trained for it, it's all good. You have to hold the gun firmly in your shoulder before you shoot. Otherwise it can hurt. I loved this rifle and mourn its loss. Also because of the caliber. 7.62 × 51 mm is simply better than 5.56 × 45 mm, I think. Gruß aus Deutschland.
After two years of shooting the G3 in the paratrooper version (with retractable shoulder stock), I was naive enough to want to shoot the Spanish Mauser FR8 carbine ("La Coruna") just as easily, given the muzzle flash suppressor and the same caliber. OUCH! After 20 rounds, my shoulder still hurt after 3 weeks!
I own a ptr91 and even mag dumping it I didn't find the recoil all that bad the rollers make it feel smoother than my AR10, but man this thing chews up some brass lol. I guess that's because I've always shot bigger calibers. I hate smaller rounds like 5.56 they are too extra for me, you gotta rely on factors such as being close range, fragmentation, hydrostatic shock, tumbling, proper ammo, and etc. Where as .308 just works and is devasting inside 800-1000 yards.
Congratulations on being medically retired brother. I was medically retired back in 2015 from an IED explosion in Afghanistan. Took years for me to recover but I’m good now. Love watching your videos. Keep up the great work.

There is no comparison to a rifle caliber, and while a rifle is going to obviously be a larger firearm clearing rooms for home defense, it's going to sit a motherfucker down, whereas a handgun caliber can be rather unreliable in stopping a threat. Countless police reports detail situations in which shots are exchanged between an officer and suspect, with the officer landing multiple hits, only for the suspect to continue their assault, or to even live through several gunshot wounds. I have been hauling this glorious masterpiece in the Swedish Homeguard for over 10 years and i've only had problem with it once. We sadly must have a collection pouch strapped on the side to collect spent casings, and if these pouches are full they can sometimes spit casings back into the gun. My personal weapon is a frankenstein of three different guns ranging from 1969 to 1976, still works like a charm :) AK4 for life!
Larger charging handle becomes even more neccesary with the fat handguards that accept bipods because your hand runs against a sling mount. My hand gets cut the fuck up.
Showed up at the Carbine qualification course with one of these and no one could take their eyes off it; everyone else had M4s. You could really hear the difference between the 7.62 and the 5.56. And yes: It definitely launches brass quite a distance....
@@AG-rk5hj - I have 300rds through it so far and it has functioned flawlessly... Not a single malfunction at all. The only issue I have is being left handed and having to cant the rifle to the right to get to the charging handle. As soon as funds permit I am going to get the conversion that switches the charging handle to the right side of the rifle.
I took the modernized Norwegian version of the G3, the AG3F1 with an Aimpoint on it, to Afghanistan twice. It never failed me. Turned it in after about 10 years with me in the serivce to get my HK416. The 416 is a good rifle. But that AG3 will live on in my heart forever.
@@MintyLime703 Not really an issue if you have trigger discipline and can shoot decently. For shorter urban engagements I'd still go with the lighter round but outside the cities the heavier round offered a lot more advantages. Not for everyone tho.

I’ve owned a PTR-91 since 2007. Don’t recall ever having a single issue with it or even a malfunction. It does have more felt recoil than my socom 16, but that’s to be expected with the operating system. It’s a quality gun, especially for what I paid for it new.
@tvercetti1 Actually that is a function of the operating system. Since it doesn't have a gas system, it needs the weight, along with the rollers to help slow down the bolt speed.
@tvercetti1 Not exactly. I agree the extra recoil is from the heavy bolt slamming the back of the receiver, but that's due to the operating system requiring such a heavy bolt/carrier to function safely and reliably (which a gas gun doesn't need).
@tvercetti1 Sorry, I think we're not on the same page. You pointed out the heavy recoil was from the heavy bolt, not the operating system. I was just pointing out that the heavy bolt is a necessary component of the operating system. I agree that 2 lb bolt slamming the back plate is what's giving that hefty jolt. 🙂
Those hot cases come in very handy in the winter, when they fly from the dude next to you straight into your jacket, burning a hole into your neck. Although our battle rifles in the army had a shield to deflect the case in a 45-degree angle, that hardly ever worked.
The thing about the current CETME from Century Arms is that the C308 is actually built by PTR using mostly PTR91 parts. My C308 worked perfectly after it (and me) got kicked around in the dirt by a bull with aggression issues. I honestly believe that rifle saved my life. I now call it "El Matador".
I have used the G3 during all my time in the Norwegian army. If you picked one of the the good ones at the quartemaster, then you had a weapon that would serve you well. I just loved the weapon. Accurate and realible.
Although the Army has moved to the SCAR, the Portuguese Marines still run the G3 as their main rifle, now equipped with the Spuhr kit. They're currently stationed in Lithuania under NATO, running these indestructible boom sticks.
I used the G3 in my Army days (Portugal). Like Flavio said the Marines still use it. It's also used in ceremonies and by the GNR (National Republican Guard)! This caliber can defeat current soviet body armor!

The main service rifle for the infantry units in Greece is still to this day the HK G3A3 & G3A4 so it is really interesting to see a video with the PTR 91
I think it's worth noting that PTR uses HK spec, not CETME, so HK G3 parts WILL work in PTR rifles. Mines basically just the PTR receiver at this point, with HK internals and a CHF barrel now.

@@metaldave556 It's CETME spec, buit from CETME parts kits. If you get one, be sure it has the rail (gen2) as it's made by PTR under contract. Gen1 had no rail, and was the rifle that gave the C308 the bad name it has now. Gen2 was completely contracted out to PTR and is an absolute beast.
@@jg0909 thanks for the info. mine does have the rail and its been awesome to shoot. only maybe three failures to go into battery in around 1k. and that was probably in the first 300 or so. my only complaint is that it doesnt have the hk style rear sight. id shoot it more but .308 isnt cheap and ive been focusing on my AR15 skills, as that would be my go to in an emergency. but after seeing this video i have the itch to take it out again.
Served with a G3 back in the day in the Portuguese Army, and god damn that gun was a beast. Could pierce through almost everything, its kick was extremely powerful which showed you how strong the weapon was. Loved its aesthetic, it was a great company during long exercises. It got freezing cold in the winter though! Unfortunately (or fortunately) the issued rifle has been changed to the SCAR-L, but I'm sure veterans who've experienced the stopping power of german rifles tend to enjoy more power to the gunshots. Loved the video!

Ptr 91 owner here. Took about 300-400 rounds to break in the rifle. Brass or steel, sometimes it would fail to eject with the roller grabbing the case on the way out. After the break-in, there have been no issues and one of my favorites to shoot.
Yeah sometimes guns need that adjustment period when you first get it. People don't understand that most times a well-used gun will perform better than a brand-new one even if they're exactly the same in manufacturer and model. It has to do with the tolerances for heat or something that the parts are treated for, I think. They seem to work better after they've been through that heat of operation. Would be interesting if we could get a better answer as to why, as that's mostly speculation on my part.
Same deal here. Mine took about 4-500 to break in. Weird thing is she’ll eat steel all day long, but when I switch to brass she gets the occasional hiccup
@@joshuameeks9471 . Yes mine was like that too out of the box (gi model 101) you had to summon the power of He Man to charge it. After cleaning it and lightly lubing the important parts I manually worked the action a couple dozen times and now it's noticeably a little easier and smoother to charge it.
During my Portuguese marine training, we were instructed and trained, putting down range effectively double taps at 70 meters. Nowadays the marine corp still uses them, but modernized (spuhr type with aimpoints/ Leupold’s / sig tango 6t’s on them).
I have a PTR91 that has served me well for many years and thousands of rounds with no main parts changes. Stout and rugged are an understatement. Until recently, I found that the recoil problem was only a problem if you didn't shoulder the rifle properly. Recently I changed the the butt stock to the SPUR and let me tell you that made a world of difference in ergonomics. You can't really use the irons with the SPUR, but the recoil is greatly reduced and doesn't punish you for bad shoulder mounting. For even better recoil comfort add a limbsaver pad on the SPUR.
Man reading all these reviews and watching this video makes me sad haha. I just got a PTR two weeks ago and it's failing to eject rounds. I think it's the ejector spring but I'm really hoping my rifle's not just a lemon. :(
I used the G3 as my service rifle for several years until we swapped for the HK416. Being used to fire full auto 7.62, it felt to me like both the M4s and the HK416s I fired had literally no recoil.
@@chrissge4477 Nope, theyr'e not. I shot M4 on joint excercises with US military, and after we switched service rifles for the HK416, there were still some G3 around in the National Guard - the 416 wasn't immediately given to all the branches upon adoption.
@@shoujahatsumetsu ok as normal Assault Rifle or Sniper Version. In Germany the G3 was used by Military before the G36 comes.. but many Years this rifle exists as Sniper Version in Military and Police Forces. But now they use the G28. The Special Forces HK416 and G36 and the normal Military G36 and go over to HK416.. Its easier to use control 5.56 as 7.62mm with full Auto.. But in Germany we say thats Plastic Guns and all older Military Guys love the old G3.
You NEED to redo the freezing and mud tests with these. Then do a sand test. Such an important platform and my only gripe was its sore absence in those videos.
Why do it at all. Be a responsible gun owner and take care of your battle rifle. You want a mud gun, get a cheap AK, they aren't half the gun the G3 is, and will never be.
I love my PTR 91 GIR. It is exceptionally accurate - I have been able to get consistent hits out to 300-400 yards with the iron sights. Mine functioned reliably right from the start...even with plenty of cheap Tula ammo I've run through it. It might not be my go to choice over an AR given its weight and recoil, but I do prefer it over the AR for shooting at longer distances. My Dad was stationed in Germany in the 80s and had always loved the HK G3 since then - we decided to buy the American made PTR 91 together and have been very pleased. This rifle is much better than okay imo, it's fantastic. Its quality is far above all the other G3 clones and copies. You can't go wrong with a PTR 91!
I had a g3 when I was in the military service in 1996 and I can only say that we managed to hit a soccer ball that was sprayed yellow at 400 meters. We only use the drum sight. crazy stuff. And the gun was from 1964 and hard use. Everybody hates the recoil but this thing run always.
I’ve had a PTR-91 for several years. My son traded for it and lost a bit on the deal so I bought it from for what he had in it, which was well above market. I’ve since added the Magpul butt stock and a skinny fore grip and am now VERY pleased with it. As mentioned by others, the iron sights are solid. The recoil will keep you awake. It’s scores total bad ass points in the looks department. While not a gun I would have gone out of my way to purchase, now that I own it I am very pleased.
Serving in the greek army the g3a4 was a godsend, i served in 2021 for 14 months , the gun was built in 1985 and it didint jam once during my whole service even though i almost never cleaned it, i would give alot just to fire that beauty again.
@@jonc2914 Even during war its very likely you'll never get to shoot your rifle unless your on the third world side. Plus if Geroge served as an active reservist as well he'll have fired plenty of rounds during basic training and continuous development.

Sadly, that’s what a young E-3 took home for a month Was fortunate enough to get one in trade with my brother in 92 or 93 before the AWB. I know it was before 94, because I ordered two magazines and they cost me over $140 after tax. Here I am many years later and I have over 100 mags. When the Bundeswehr stopped using the G3, the market was flooded with cheap surplus mags. Glad I stocked up
This brought me back to my enlisted days. The Royal Norwegian Army used the G3 (and MG3, of which I was a gunner) extensively. I served in -93 and remember my G3 was manufactured in -67. Shot like a star, never any issues with it.
At the time, the G3 was one of the best assault rifles in the world. It was very precise on short and long distances, had a high man-stop effect and a high power through the 7. 62 caliber. The Americans didn’t waste any money and built a solid and reliable rifle. I am glad that I was allowed to carry the G3 as my service weapon for many years. I was not so happy with today’s G36, but it is much better than it is portrayed in the media. So happy you did this! I've had mine for over 20yrs and absolutely loved it from the first day I got and still so till today. I've had only one stoppage by shitty ammo from my neighbor's reloads. But other than that, everything is still running fine and zero stoppages from shelf ammo. Got it from my LA sherrifs buddy who bought it after the North Hollywood Shoot Out . As a retired Recon Marine he stated "the hell with all these yokles rushing for ARs, I'm gonna drop these SOBs with a 7.62!"
The real fun is doing a 'deep dive' into the lineage of the G3 / CETME...which goes back to the final months of WWII, and the last Sturmgewehr...the StG 45(M).
Mine was finicky when I first got it. Would have all been relatively easy fixes if I'd had the patience to just send it back to PTR for warranty service but I was determined to get it going myself. Well, after a period of troubleshooting I got it to basically 100% and I freaking love it. Comes with me to the range very frequently and I have about 2k rounds through it (7.62 is expensive). I liked it enough to get a 9CT mp5 clone that's been perfect out of the box. If you're on the fence, buy it. It's not getting any cheaper, whatever problems you might have are generally user serviceable because the operating system is pretty straightforward (however relies on tight tolerances to work correctly).
2 very easy changes you can make with little modification to these rifles to reduce muzzle rise and felt recoil; 1.) Different brake, obviously 2.) Get an hk21 lmg or Enhanced heavy buffer.. will literally reduce felt recoil by almost half, I kid you not
@@Nperez1986 does he still do em? I got a heavy buffer already (and stock) from hkparts for like 80 so I'm already good on that end. Was trying to buy a match trigger from Germany but they wouldn't ship. Seems bill and the other guy (can't remember his name) had stopped doing trigger jobs, at least according to recent forum posts.
PSA: if the ptr fails to go into battery or you want to quietly charge the rifle, just tap the butt stock on the ground or nearby corner. It will pop right into battery. This also applies to all variants of the roller delayed systems. Even true for the HK G3 and the PSG1 (even though the PSG1 has a ratcheting forward assist)
I served with the 3G nearly 30 years ago at the German Bundeswehr. She was a great gun. A little heavy and bulky but very reliable. Was a lot of fun shooting the big lady 😉

My PTR experience: out of the box I had problems. Sent it to PTR and they had it back and flawlessly running in less than two weeks. After that I love it. The best modification I’ve found is the Haga defense adapter and ACR stock. It makes it a completely different rifle especially using an optic. I also went with the magpul grip for the extended safety, extended charging handle, trigger job, good brake, and an MLOK hand guard. I absolutely love it now. I’m also running the primary arms acss
Dumb question alert.... What is the process of sending a firearm back to the manufacturer for service? I've only sent back a 22lr revolver, well actually the store I bought it from took care of all that for me, so do you have to take it to an FFL or can you package and send it from home? I assume when they send it back it goes to an FFL obviously.
@@rhinosauserous Usually you contact the manufacturer, you send it off via USPS/Fedex direct to them (sometimes they'll send you a label or even a box and a label), they fix it, and they send it back to your doorstep where you sign for it. Also depends on your state. Some places its better (and cheaper) to have the FFL/gun shop send it back the manufacturer.
@@deedle6073 I was having roller lockup/unlock and ejection issues with mine. I don’t remember what they fixed/replaced as it’s been months since I sent it off. Even though I was disappointed with having problems out of the box they by far made up with it by the customer service and super fast return.
I have worked with the HK G3 for many years. The muzzle flash reveals your own position much more reliably than any dust that may have been thrown up. In addition to training, proper care is essential. Even a wonderfully precise HK G3 is not effective without it.

Portuguese Military here! I serve since 1993 and the "original" G3 saved my life and our marines still operate it with spur. My father was on our African colonial war in mozambique and Angola and the G3 saved his life more than once so that (old G3)rifle hás a special place in my heart! 🇵🇹
The G3 is the clear winner of the battle rifle wars. As much as I love the FAL and think that the AR10 is the best battle rifle (although _not_ a contender for title of cold war battle rifle. It wasn't produced in enough numbers to be significant until the SR25/MK11/M110 era) the G3 is still kicking and running in the worst, most neglectful conditions.
@@murphy7801 the Swedes are using the AK4D (a G3 variant) as a marksmans rifle alongside their infantry version. Their standard guys have an optic (I think an LPVO) and their marksman have basically the same rifle only with a higher powered optic. They train 0-600 metres all day, only stopping at 600 because they issue a 147 grain load. So the round is their limiting factor, not the rifle.
This is a great analysis of the HK 91. I have a lot of experience with Portuguese G3 and everything you said about recoil, mags, sights and accuracy is the same experience that I have. Having said that I love the FAL and consider it a better rifle with things like bolt hold open, softer recoil and a better mag well design for faster reloading. Garand Thumb always preaches to get training well I can't imagine what kind of sadist would enjoy using a G3 in a rifle class.
Got the Swedish analogue of G3 - AK 4, during my service, it is an amazing gun. Issues are: losing fire rate in the cold environment and ironsight will be useles if you drop it into the dirt (hard to clean diopter ... you should cary toothpicks with you).
I love my 18" bull barrel PTR91. It has a 5.5x power ACOG, Midwest Industries M-lok Rail, Bipod and Cheek Riser. My girlfriend can shoot a 12" steel target at 600 yard and hit 4/5 times. It is very heavy, not ergonomic, but shoots like a tank!
I've been wanting a ptr-91 since I was 16! I even have a bunch of parts that will go on the rifle once I have it. Too bad they've shot up in price quite a bit. I remember being able to buy the GI model for like 800 bucks lol. Then again that's back when Romanian PSLs were 700 bucks too and 9mm was almost as cheap to shoot as .22
I used the G3A3 when serving the Cyprus National Guard for two years. We used to complain about using these “old” assault rifles and the necessity of our armed forces to replace them, but it is a really good rifle for infantry still for todays standards! I really love the sniper rifle version of it being the PSG-1 and the MSG-90A1
i loved my G3 in german military! sadly wasnt the actual service rifle, i was just lucky enough to get some days on the range with it and i can confirm they are super accurate even beyond 100m
I found this really interesting, my PTR91 was apparently just a perfect one, no break in time, everything lined up and straight, super smooth, never a hang up or light strike, also yes I have giant meaty monster hands my family came from scotland so maybe that is why
I carried the G3 during my time in the German Army. Even though, every single unit other than us was already equiped with thw G36. We still needed the G3 as it could be used as a paddle in our small boats in case the engine died. Regarding the accuracy, I was absolutely shocked. At 300m with iron sights in prone position I was able to get a 6 round grouping of around 4-5 inches. Guess that ist pretty good for a rifle that was already 36 years in service. I loved this thing and told everyone that wanted to change to the g36, that I will take the G3 over the G36 ervery day. Just put a Zeiss Ziel4 or 6 on it, I catch everything from 400m to 600m, where the 5.56 would reach its end
ich wurde erst am G36 ausgebildet und später in der stammeinheit dann auch am G3 (allerdings mit der besch**** einschiebbaren schulterstütze) ist ein tolles gewehr und ich mag das diopter visier sehr. für eine schnelle zielauffassung auf distanzen unter 150meter ist das G36 aber weit überlegen.
Definitely one of my favorite rifles of all time. I had an HK91 on my list of dream guns I didn't think Id ever own and my wife bought me one for my 40th birthday. It's dated on the year I was born too.

I used one of these in Northern Cyprus when I was serving my mandatory military out for the Turkish Armed Forces. Yes it’s old, but still quite effective to the day. They have newer rifles (Turkish commando and special forces), but we had the German G3’s. Deutsch magic still worked after thirty odd years.
I served as a regular in the Bundeswehr (PzAufklBat 2, Hessisch Lichtenau, 4. Kp) from 72-74 and, in between, from 76-80 in the RhSF (Rhodesian Security Forces) as SGT and Platooncdr....in both Armys armed with the G 3. Afterwards I rejoined the Bundeswehr again. Most Rhodesians preferred the FN/SLR..but I was quite happy with my G 3 or the RPD with the 80 round Drum. My Batt was the very last unit in the RhSF issued with the Bren Gun (till June 1980)
Carried out my military service 32 years ago here in Sweden. I used the AK4 as G3 is designated in Sweden. However, my captain was of the opinion that if we, no matter how neutral Sweden were, were to be attacked, we must be reasonably familiar with how other weapons systems work. So, he made sure that we got to test shoot both M-16A2, AKM and the FNC (designated AK5 in Sweden). The last one as it was just about to be implemented in the Swedish army, even if only the officers had started using them. It was kind of funny, how the M16A2 and the AKM felt like toys after so much time with the AK4.
The G3 was my issued weapon when I started in the Danish army - my unit was the only one still fielding these. Everyone else where using Colt Canada AR15’s. Best thing was my unit was a combat medic training unit - with 7.62 battlerifles 😎 Anyway I loved the G3 - when I went to sergent school I was forces to shift to a 5.56 carbine - it felt like a toy. When doing guard duty I still used the G3 - slamming the lock forward as a warning had so much more impact with the G3 😅 I was a competative shooter as a young man, and shooting the G3 without scopes was awesome - so accurate!
Ive got a ptr 91 MSG and its never missed a beat. Had 0 issues during "break in". The recoil impulse while heavy is fairly nice due the the roller delay mechanism. Feels more like a push then a kick. I really miss shooting it but its been collecting dust due to the cost of 308 ammo.
The G3 will always have a special place in my heart, which happens when you go through hell together. A couple of comments: G3 triggers vary a lot, from glassy smooth to rock crusher rough. I'm talking factory fresh, nothing custom. Also, "the occasional stoppage" is absolutely not par for the course. It takes either extreme neglect or bad ammo to make a proper G3 so much as blink. Also also, lore has it that you can charge a G3 by throwing it hard enough butt first at the barracks floor. Don't ask me how I know, some guy just told me, ok? Anyway, that does say a lot about the total unbreakability of this rifle. Finally, I don't think everybody got your joke about "slight damage to the brass" but never mind that, you can't reload brass that's lost somewhere in the forest, no matter if it's undamaged or bent like a banana.
I had an extraction problem with mine when I got it, brass was hard to extract but steel did better & the spot welds on the band behind the front sight popped off too. The flutes in the barrel were too tight & I sent it back, they replaced the barrel & bolt & even refinished it for me at no charge. While I was disappointed in that, their customer service was excellent.
My PTR91 was my first rifle, I bought it in 2016 after the Pulse shooting because I wasn't going to get caught packing. Mine was pretty wonky out of the box but works a lot better after PTR replaced the bolt. It still has some stoppages where it doesn't go into batter and when I clear it the case will have a dent in it like a bottle opener. I don't know it it's the mags, the steel ammo, or my rifle. Also the polished marksman trigger is a must buy, the club foot stock is great too. You were wearing gloves but bare handed those slim handguards get SO hot SO fast.
I purchased a West German-made HK-91 brand new after graduating high school in the late 1980s. Was able to pick it up for $749 at the time. Hell for stout but the accuracy is virtually impossible to realize because of the HEAVY two stage trigger! It's almost like a heavy double action revolver trigger, really. I added an A.R.M.S. scope mount but that puts the scope so high a raised cheekpiece is needed. Great tool, but not nearly as versatile as a modern AR system.

I used to have one from '78. The trigger was smooth but at least 12 lbs (not exaggerating). If you took your time, I could still get good accuracy out of it.
I was in the military and hated the AR platform. Too complicated, too small caliber, and ridiculously expensive for the performance you get. Just my take.
Congrats on the retirement, hopefully nothing too impactful on the rest of your enjoyable life! Got a buddy who is %100 med, but will spend some time adjusting. I was lucky 21.5 years and all parts still sorta good.
I have that exact gun. Love it. Look into the Bill Springfield Recoil Mitigation system. Makes a bit of difference. Or his Trigger pack which drops trigger pull to 4 and 5 lbs.
Word in the block is, Green Mountain makes the barrels on the PTR-91. That’s about my only hang up is the lack of a chrome lined, CHF barrel like the H&K G3/91 series rifles.
They do, it's fairly well known. Also I don't think anyone but Battlefield Vegas has managed to shoot out the barrel of a PTR, which is ultimately a shitload of 308.
I get that, but generally speaking a Chromoly barrel with a nitride treatment is well beyond the durability that any owner will demand out of their gear, and has the capability of being more accurate out of the box.
@@jebe9337 I’ve been looking into RCM barrel and trunnions because apparently PTR used a different style of trunnion with a different amount of flutes compared to the standard HK, which could sometimes cause feeding issues with certain ammunition
I absolutely adore my PTR91! I need to upgrade mine to have a paddle mag release because mine didn't come with one. However, the PTR32 is a great intermediate cartridge platform based on the G3! I have caught the roller delayed blowback bug!
I don’t have a PTR but I do have the century arms C308 which is built from the original CETME rifle surplus parts in a US made lower. Sweet gun and possibly the most affordable semi 308 out there
Regarding reloading the brass: it isn't just damaged by the extremely aggressive extraction/ejection, which typically heavily dents the case neck, but it ALSO is damaged by the brass flowing into the flutes cut into the chamber (to improve extraction). Given how rough it is on brass, the only ammo I shoot through my PTR is the brass that has already been reloaded 6 or 7 times and is almost ready to be retired; after it goes through the PTR it goes into the brass recycling bucket.
I used the G3 in the Hellenic army, and we always sent the brass for reloading and used reloaded ammo. You could tell it was reloaded because you could still see the lines from the flutes, but the case was smooth and shot perfectly. So they can certainly be reloaded.
@@perseusrex614 I never said they could not be reloaded. I said I waited until the brass was almost worn out before sending it to the G3/ PTR. I also said the reason I did that was because the rifle was hard on the brass (which it is). Work hardening is a thing with brass. The more you bend, stretch, or compress it, the more brittle it becomes, until it breaks. The G3/ PTR exerts significantly more bending, compressing, and shearing forces on the brass than do other 7.62x51mm rifles. Therefore, the useful lifespan of brass shot through a G3/ PTR is shorter than that shot through other rifles. Brass shot through a bolt-action rifle with an extremely tight chamber might be re-useable for reloading a dozen times before the work-hardening becomes so severe it must be thrown out. Brass fired through most auto-loading rifles with relatively loose (military spec) chambers can be safely reloaded perhaps only six to eight times. Brass shot through a G3/ PTR is work hardened so much each time you would be lucky to get 3-4 reloadings before it must be discarded. So, yes, it can be done. But if you reload and you want to do so efficiently, it is preferable to do as I do and only send "old" brass through the G3.
@@perseusrex614 Also, while it is certainly possible to straighten out the huge dents in the case neck that the G3/ PTR leaves in the brass, it is a lot of extra work to do so, and the neck will never be as concentric, nor will the grip stress be as uniform, after it has been fired through that G4/ PTR. And you might need special-order mandrels to straighten the case necks, because it dents them so severely that standard resizing mandrels have a tendency to "roll over" the neck instead of straightening it. It's just a lot of extra hassle to go through: particularly when there is a much easier option (namely, shooting the new brass through other rifles, and then retiring it on the G3)
The AMMO will be extracted, even if the extractor is broke. And very very vicious. Does it wreck ammo, we yes, but the rifle works. Mine is a parts kit, so i have all HK parts. works great
Man, I carried an MP5 on SWAT for a little over 10 years and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done that. I could probably still take it apart in the dark but I much preferred the Benelli M1 Super 90 I had issued to me.

I retromodded my PCS33 (Hk93 clone from Parabellum Combat Systems) to be my go to gpr, right now I've got an EoTech VUDU 1-6x ffp with SR-1 reticle w/Holosun 507c X2 ACSS mounted 12 o'clock on top for passive NODs use, before that I had an EXPS3-4/Sig Juliet 4x magnifier combo. I definitely dig the versatility of having an LPVO for daytime use (I've always preferred prismatic optics with etched glass for daytime), prd for low light NODs use, however I've noticed having a longer optic like the VUDU on the relatively short top rail isn't very practical for the Hk rollerlock manual of arms, namely in the typical reloading process (lock bolt/charge handle rearward, drop mag, insert mag, Hk SLAP!!! charge handle/bolt into battery) as the objective lense of an LPVO is going to ride up awfully close to the charging handle locking notch. As such, I'm looking at swapping the VUDU 1-6x with an ACOG TA02 with my 507c forward mounted on top at 12 o'clock
@@MaverickHeloPilot i could see where it would be an issue on a shorter system. I'm using a Vortex Viper PST2 1-6 on my ptr91. Its just short enough the hk splap is unimpeded.
I really like my PTR-91, I’ve had no issues shooting steel cased ammo. I put an eotech 2-0 on it with a cheap but pretty decent RTG clamp, I had Bill Springfield “tune” the trigger and I’m using his buffer to calm it down for my destroyed shoulder - now it’s much more fun to shoot, and it’s much easier on my shoulder.
I installed a high angle locking piece, Strike J-comp V2, Springfield buffer and a G21 recoil pad. It’s a pretty light recoiling gun now. I also added a billet trigger and I polished all of the parts.
I just got one of these a month ago and I immediately fell in love with it. The details, the welds in the receiver and mixed finish work just reminded me of welding class. The simplicity of the system, but the complexity of the design concepts are such a contradiction that I simply can't get enough of it. But yeah it loves to fucking chew up my brass.
Issued in service, never let me down, hated to carry it with all the ammo she is a big heavy girl. I loved it! Out of service bought a HK91 still have it.

I bought my PTR91 a few months ago and I love it. Bought it from a buddy who works at the local gun shop and it has a Magpul PRS stock like the PSG1 and a Witt Machine SME 308 muzzle brake. Loud as hell and spits a hell of a flame but I love it. It's very accurate and with the Witt Machine it doesn't have that bad of recoil. I even fired it one handed from the hip. I have a few videos of it on my channel. Definitely a nice rifle!
I love my PTR 91! I have had it for years. Put an ACOG on it and it is an amazing hog gun for central/east Texas! And I have to say the accuracy you stated is almost EXACTLY what I get out of my rifle. It’ll shoot anything you feed it but you need top tier ammo to get good accuracy.
@BAMFs Tactical Which ACOG do you have on it? I had a TA33 on mine with the chevron reticle and didn't care for that reticle personally, although the weight and eye relief were fantastic.
I have one on the way with optic rail. I was planning on putting a ta11eg on it and hoping to use it on some local pigs. I too am in ETx, between Tyler and Lufkin, one mile south of God's country...
Modern rifles are cool and all, but battle rifles like the G3 and the FAL will always have a place in my heart

I served in the Bundeswehr from 1991-1992 (4.Pz.Gren.Btl.162) and my weapon of choice was the G3. Mine was built in 1969 and still had an old wooden buttstock. On our first shoot we had three rounds to set the aim and my rifle was the only one that hit where you aimed. Of course, the recoil is enormous, but if you're well trained for it, it's all good. You have to hold the gun firmly in your shoulder before you shoot. Otherwise it can hurt. I loved this rifle and mourn its loss. Also because of the caliber. 7.62 × 51 mm is simply better than 5.56 × 45 mm, I think.

After two years of shooting the G3 in the paratrooper version (with retractable shoulder stock), I was naive enough to want to shoot the Spanish Mauser FR8 carbine ("La Coruna") just as easily, given the muzzle flash suppressor and the same caliber.
OUCH! After 20 rounds, my shoulder still hurt after 3 weeks!
I own a ptr91 and even mag dumping it I didn't find the recoil all that bad the rollers make it feel smoother than my AR10, but man this thing chews up some brass lol. I guess that's because I've always shot bigger calibers. I hate smaller rounds like 5.56 they are too extra for me, you gotta rely on factors such as being close range, fragmentation, hydrostatic shock, tumbling, proper ammo, and etc. Where as .308 just works and is devasting inside 800-1000 yards.

@@dillonc7955 Then get the rifle instead. There is no comparison to a rifle caliber, and while a rifle is going to obviously be a larger firearm clearing rooms for home defense, it's going to sit a motherfucker down, whereas a handgun caliber can be rather unreliable in stopping a threat.
Countless police reports detail situations in which shots are exchanged between an officer and suspect, with the officer landing multiple hits, only for the suspect to continue their assault, or to even live through several gunshot wounds.

I have been hauling this glorious masterpiece in the Swedish Homeguard for over 10 years and i've only had problem with it once. We sadly must have a collection pouch strapped on the side to collect spent casings, and if these pouches are full they can sometimes spit casings back into the gun. My personal weapon is a frankenstein of three different guns ranging from 1969 to 1976, still works like a charm :) AK4 for life!
I used to carry her for several years, then swiched to g36. We hated it back then because of the size and weight, but now i kinda miss it.
Kind a fun that the modified AK4 now are re-implemented in the regular armed forces, specific for the sharp shooters.

I went with the larger MG buffer and slower locking lug to tame the recoil a bit. Also a larger charging handle.
The Norwegian and Swedish stocks are alot better.
Larger charging handle becomes even more neccesary with the fat handguards that accept bipods because your hand runs against a sling mount. My hand gets cut the fuck up.

Showed up at the Carbine qualification course with one of these and no one could take their eyes off it; everyone else had M4s. You could really hear the difference between the 7.62 and the 5.56.
And yes: It definitely launches brass quite a distance....

@@AG-rk5hj - I have 300rds through it so far and it has functioned flawlessly... Not a single malfunction at all.
The only issue I have is being left handed and having to cant the rifle to the right to get to the charging handle. As soon as funds permit I am going to get the conversion that switches the charging handle to the right side of the rifle.
@@Paveway-chan - With a barrel length of 18inches, I am pretty sure it still qualifies as a "Carbine" and not a "Rifle".

I took the modernized Norwegian version of the G3, the AG3F1 with an Aimpoint on it, to Afghanistan twice. It never failed me. Turned it in after about 10 years with me in the serivce to get my HK416. The 416 is a good rifle. But that AG3 will live on in my heart forever.
Well suited for the engagement distances in Afghanistan. I'd much rather have a 7.62 there than a 5.56.

@@MintyLime703 Not really an issue if you have trigger discipline and can shoot decently. For shorter urban engagements I'd still go with the lighter round but outside the cities the heavier round offered a lot more advantages. Not for everyone tho.

I’ve owned a PTR-91 since 2007. Don’t recall ever having a single issue with it or even a malfunction. It does have more felt recoil than my socom 16, but that’s to be expected with the operating system. It’s a quality gun, especially for what I paid for it new.
@tvercetti1 Actually that is a function of the operating system. Since it doesn't have a gas system, it needs the weight, along with the rollers to help slow down the bolt speed.
@tvercetti1 Not exactly. I agree the extra recoil is from the heavy bolt slamming the back of the receiver, but that's due to the operating system requiring such a heavy bolt/carrier to function safely and reliably (which a gas gun doesn't need).
@tvercetti1 Sorry, I think we're not on the same page. You pointed out the heavy recoil was from the heavy bolt, not the operating system. I was just pointing out that the heavy bolt is a necessary component of the operating system. I agree that 2 lb bolt slamming the back plate is what's giving that hefty jolt. 🙂

Throw a heavy buffer in it and be surprised how light the recoil is afterwards. Expensive but worth it.
One thing to note is that unlike other PTRs like their MP5 clones, the PTR91 is actually built on HK tooling(from Portugal).

Those hot cases come in very handy in the winter, when they fly from the dude next to you straight into your jacket, burning a hole into your neck.
Although our battle rifles in the army had a shield to deflect the case in a 45-degree angle, that hardly ever worked.

The thing about the current CETME from Century Arms is that the C308 is actually built by PTR using mostly PTR91 parts.
My C308 worked perfectly after it (and me) got kicked around in the dirt by a bull with aggression issues. I honestly believe that rifle saved my life. I now call it "El Matador".

I have used the G3 during all my time in the Norwegian army. If you picked one of the the good ones at the quartemaster, then you had a weapon that would serve you well. I just loved the weapon. Accurate and realible.

Yet us 2nd amendment American civilians don't need a govt quartermaster to use. We love our AR10's (Lego piece firearms).
I only recall having issues with the AG3 with training ammo/rødfiss. Shit got stuck all the time.
Although the Army has moved to the SCAR, the Portuguese Marines still run the G3 as their main rifle, now equipped with the Spuhr kit. They're currently stationed in Lithuania under NATO, running these indestructible boom sticks.
The Spuhr stock is so awesome. It totally changed my PTR's recoil pattern, and now I can actually use my scope... Lol
So does the Mexican Police and military.

I used the G3 in my Army days (Portugal). Like Flavio said the Marines still use it. It's also used in ceremonies and by the GNR (National Republican Guard)! This caliber can defeat current soviet body armor!

The main service rifle for the infantry units in Greece is still to this day the HK G3A3 & G3A4 so it is really interesting to see a video with the PTR 91
I think it's worth noting that PTR uses HK spec, not CETME, so HK G3 parts WILL work in PTR rifles. Mines basically just the PTR receiver at this point, with HK internals and a CHF barrel now.

@@metaldave556 It's CETME spec, buit from CETME parts kits. If you get one, be sure it has the rail (gen2) as it's made by PTR under contract.
Gen1 had no rail, and was the rifle that gave the C308 the bad name it has now. Gen2 was completely contracted out to PTR and is an absolute beast.
@@jg0909 thanks for the info. mine does have the rail and its been awesome to shoot. only maybe three failures to go into battery in around 1k. and that was probably in the first 300 or so. my only complaint is that it doesnt have the hk style rear sight. id shoot it more but .308 isnt cheap and ive been focusing on my AR15 skills, as that would be my go to in an emergency. but after seeing this video i have the itch to take it out again.
Served with a G3 back in the day in the Portuguese Army, and god damn that gun was a beast. Could pierce through almost everything, its kick was extremely powerful which showed you how strong the weapon was. Loved its aesthetic, it was a great company during long exercises. It got freezing cold in the winter though! Unfortunately (or fortunately) the issued rifle has been changed to the SCAR-L, but I'm sure veterans who've experienced the stopping power of german rifles tend to enjoy more power to the gunshots. Loved the video!

Ptr 91 owner here. Took about 300-400 rounds to break in the rifle. Brass or steel, sometimes it would fail to eject with the roller grabbing the case on the way out. After the break-in, there have been no issues and one of my favorites to shoot.
Yeah sometimes guns need that adjustment period when you first get it.
People don't understand that most times a well-used gun will perform better than a brand-new one even if they're exactly the same in manufacturer and model.
It has to do with the tolerances for heat or something that the parts are treated for, I think. They seem to work better after they've been through that heat of operation. Would be interesting if we could get a better answer as to why, as that's mostly speculation on my part.
Same deal here. Mine took about 4-500 to break in. Weird thing is she’ll eat steel all day long, but when I switch to brass she gets the occasional hiccup
Also it doesn't hurt to work the action a few times manually before firing. Also a good cleaning before hand goes a long way.
Does the action ever smooth out? Every one I’ve ever picked up has had a mega-stiff action.
@@joshuameeks9471 . Yes mine was like that too out of the box (gi model 101) you had to summon the power of He Man to charge it. After cleaning it and lightly lubing the important parts I manually worked the action a couple dozen times and now it's noticeably a little easier and smoother to charge it.
During my Portuguese marine training, we were instructed and trained, putting down range effectively double taps at 70 meters. Nowadays the marine corp still uses them, but modernized (spuhr type with aimpoints/ Leupold’s / sig tango 6t’s on them).

I have a PTR91 that has served me well for many years and thousands of rounds with no main parts changes. Stout and rugged are an understatement. Until recently, I found that the recoil problem was only a problem if you didn't shoulder the rifle properly. Recently I changed the the butt stock to the SPUR and let me tell you that made a world of difference in ergonomics. You can't really use the irons with the SPUR, but the recoil is greatly reduced and doesn't punish you for bad shoulder mounting. For even better recoil comfort add a limbsaver pad on the SPUR.
Man reading all these reviews and watching this video makes me sad haha. I just got a PTR two weeks ago and it's failing to eject rounds. I think it's the ejector spring but I'm really hoping my rifle's not just a lemon. :(
I have been thinking of getting that Spuhr stock but I'm trying to see if it's worth $300.
I used the G3 as my service rifle for several years until we swapped for the HK416. Being used to fire full auto 7.62, it felt to me like both the M4s and the HK416s I fired had literally no recoil.

@@chrissge4477 Nope, theyr'e not. I shot M4 on joint excercises with US military, and after we switched service rifles for the HK416, there were still some G3 around in the National Guard - the 416 wasn't immediately given to all the branches upon adoption.
@@shoujahatsumetsu ok as normal Assault Rifle or Sniper Version. In Germany the G3 was used by Military before the G36 comes.. but many Years this rifle exists as Sniper Version in Military and Police Forces.
But now they use the G28. The Special Forces HK416 and G36 and the normal Military G36 and go over to HK416.. Its easier to use control 5.56 as 7.62mm with full Auto.. But in Germany we say thats Plastic Guns and all older Military Guys love the old G3.

Why do it at all. Be a responsible gun owner and take care of your battle rifle. You want a mud gun, get a cheap AK, they aren't half the gun the G3 is, and will never be.
I love my PTR 91 GIR. It is exceptionally accurate - I have been able to get consistent hits out to 300-400 yards with the iron sights. Mine functioned reliably right from the start...even with plenty of cheap Tula ammo I've run through it. It might not be my go to choice over an AR given its weight and recoil, but I do prefer it over the AR for shooting at longer distances. My Dad was stationed in Germany in the 80s and had always loved the HK G3 since then - we decided to buy the American made PTR 91 together and have been very pleased. This rifle is much better than okay imo, it's fantastic. Its quality is far above all the other G3 clones and copies. You can't go wrong with a PTR 91!

I had a g3 when I was in the military service in 1996 and I can only say that we managed to hit a soccer ball that was sprayed yellow at 400 meters. We only use the drum sight.

I’ve had a PTR-91 for several years. My son traded for it and lost a bit on the deal so I bought it from for what he had in it, which was well above market. I’ve since added the Magpul butt stock and a skinny fore grip and am now VERY pleased with it. As mentioned by others, the iron sights are solid. The recoil will keep you awake. It’s scores total bad ass points in the looks department. While not a gun I would have gone out of my way to purchase, now that I own it I am very pleased.

Serving in the greek army the g3a4 was a godsend, i served in 2021 for 14 months , the gun was built in 1985 and it didint jam once during my whole service even though i almost never cleaned it, i would give alot just to fire that beauty again.

Back in the 1980’s the Colt AR15’s were around $1200 a German made HK91 was only $650 pretty good deal for a rifle that was built to last forever.

Was fortunate enough to get one in trade with my brother in 92 or 93 before the AWB. I know it was before 94, because I ordered two magazines and they cost me over $140 after tax.
Here I am many years later and I have over 100 mags. When the Bundeswehr stopped using the G3, the market was flooded with cheap surplus mags. Glad I stocked up
You could get Colt ARs for $400 and HK91 for $439 back in 1984.
This brought me back to my enlisted days. The Royal Norwegian Army used the G3 (and MG3, of which I was a gunner) extensively. I served in -93 and remember my G3 was manufactured in -67. Shot like a star, never any issues with it.

At the time, the G3 was one of the best assault rifles in the world. It was very precise on short and long distances, had a high man-stop effect and a high power through the 7. 62 caliber. The Americans didn’t waste any money and built a solid and reliable rifle. I am glad that I was allowed to carry the G3 as my service weapon for many years. I was not so happy with today’s G36, but it is much better than it is portrayed in the media. So happy you did this! I've had mine for over 20yrs and absolutely loved it from the first day I got and still so till today. I've had only one stoppage by shitty ammo from my neighbor's reloads. But other than that, everything is still running fine and zero stoppages from shelf ammo. Got it from my LA sherrifs buddy who bought it after the North Hollywood Shoot Out . As a retired Recon Marine he stated "the hell with all these yokles rushing for ARs, I'm gonna drop these SOBs with a 7.62!"
The real fun is doing a 'deep dive' into the lineage of the G3 / CETME...which goes back to the final months of WWII, and the last Sturmgewehr...the StG 45(M).

Mine was finicky when I first got it. Would have all been relatively easy fixes if I'd had the patience to just send it back to PTR for warranty service but I was determined to get it going myself. Well, after a period of troubleshooting I got it to basically 100% and I freaking love it. Comes with me to the range very frequently and I have about 2k rounds through it (7.62 is expensive). I liked it enough to get a 9CT mp5 clone that's been perfect out of the box. If you're on the fence, buy it. It's not getting any cheaper, whatever problems you might have are generally user serviceable because the operating system is pretty straightforward (however relies on tight tolerances to work correctly).
2 very easy changes you can make with little modification to these rifles to reduce muzzle rise and felt recoil;
1.) Different brake, obviously
2.) Get an hk21 lmg or Enhanced heavy buffer.. will literally reduce felt recoil by almost half, I kid you not
Yeah the hk21 and LMG buffers are much larger / beefier. So yeah that recoil will be reduced.
For half the price you can get the buffer redone AND a trigger job by Bill Springfield

Was trying to buy a match trigger from Germany but they wouldn't ship. Seems bill and the other guy (can't remember his name) had stopped doing trigger jobs, at least according to recent forum posts.

PSA: if the ptr fails to go into battery or you want to quietly charge the rifle, just tap the butt stock on the ground or nearby corner. It will pop right into battery. This also applies to all variants of the roller delayed systems. Even true for the HK G3 and the PSG1 (even though the PSG1 has a ratcheting forward assist)
It failing to go into battery is not a bug - it's a feature.

I served with the 3G nearly 30 years ago at the German Bundeswehr. She was a great gun. A little heavy and bulky but very reliable. Was a lot of fun shooting the big lady 😉

My PTR experience: out of the box I had problems. Sent it to PTR and they had it back and flawlessly running in less than two weeks. After that I love it. The best modification I’ve found is the Haga defense adapter and ACR stock. It makes it a completely different rifle especially using an optic. I also went with the magpul grip for the extended safety, extended charging handle, trigger job, good brake, and an MLOK hand guard. I absolutely love it now. I’m also running the primary arms acss
Dumb question alert....
What is the process of sending a firearm back to the manufacturer for service? I've only sent back a 22lr revolver, well actually the store I bought it from took care of all that for me, so do you have to take it to an FFL or can you package and send it from home? I assume when they send it back it goes to an FFL obviously.
@@rhinosauserous Usually you contact the manufacturer, you send it off via USPS/Fedex direct to them (sometimes they'll send you a label or even a box and a label), they fix it, and they send it back to your doorstep where you sign for it.
Also depends on your state. Some places its better (and cheaper) to have the FFL/gun shop send it back the manufacturer.

@@deedle6073 I was having roller lockup/unlock and ejection issues with mine. I don’t remember what they fixed/replaced as it’s been months since I sent it off. Even though I was disappointed with having problems out of the box they by far made up with it by the customer service and super fast return.
Bought 5 mags for this before the mag ban in anticipation of getting one in the next year or 2... thank you Washington

I have worked with the HK G3 for many years. The muzzle flash reveals your own position much more reliably than any dust that may have been thrown up. In addition to training, proper care is essential. Even a wonderfully precise HK G3 is not effective without it.

Portuguese Military here! I serve since 1993 and the "original" G3 saved my life and our marines still operate it with spur. My father was on our African colonial war in mozambique and Angola and the G3 saved his life more than once so that (old G3)rifle hás a special place in my heart! 🇵🇹
The G3 is the clear winner of the battle rifle wars.
As much as I love the FAL and think that the AR10 is the best battle rifle (although _not_ a contender for title of cold war battle rifle. It wasn't produced in enough numbers to be significant until the SR25/MK11/M110 era) the G3 is still kicking and running in the worst, most neglectful conditions.
Also the most accurate without requiring the servicing of the m1r which shakes itself apart.
@@murphy7801 the Swedes are using the AK4D (a G3 variant) as a marksmans rifle alongside their infantry version. Their standard guys have an optic (I think an LPVO) and their marksman have basically the same rifle only with a higher powered optic. They train 0-600 metres all day, only stopping at 600 because they issue a 147 grain load. So the round is their limiting factor, not the rifle.

This is a great analysis of the HK 91. I have a lot of experience with Portuguese G3 and everything you said about recoil, mags, sights and accuracy is the same experience that I have. Having said that I love the FAL and consider it a better rifle with things like bolt hold open, softer recoil and a better mag well design for faster reloading. Garand Thumb always preaches to get training well I can't imagine what kind of sadist would enjoy using a G3 in a rifle class.

Got the Swedish analogue of G3 - AK 4, during my service, it is an amazing gun. Issues are: losing fire rate in the cold environment and ironsight will be useles if you drop it into the dirt (hard to clean diopter ... you should cary toothpicks with you).
My favorite battle rifle. Even with all its down falls. I love the G3. Reliability over anything
I love my 18" bull barrel PTR91. It has a 5.5x power ACOG, Midwest Industries M-lok Rail, Bipod and Cheek Riser. My girlfriend can shoot a 12" steel target at 600 yard and hit 4/5 times. It is very heavy, not ergonomic, but shoots like a tank!

I've been wanting a ptr-91 since I was 16! I even have a bunch of parts that will go on the rifle once I have it. Too bad they've shot up in price quite a bit. I remember being able to buy the GI model for like 800 bucks lol. Then again that's back when Romanian PSLs were 700 bucks too and 9mm was almost as cheap to shoot as .22
I used the G3A3 when serving the Cyprus National Guard for two years. We used to complain about using these “old” assault rifles and the necessity of our armed forces to replace them, but it is a really good rifle for infantry still for todays standards! I really love the sniper rifle version of it being the PSG-1 and the MSG-90A1
i loved my G3 in german military! sadly wasnt the actual service rifle, i was just lucky enough to get some days on the range with it and i can confirm they are super accurate even beyond 100m
I found this really interesting, my PTR91 was apparently just a perfect one, no break in time, everything lined up and straight, super smooth, never a hang up or light strike, also yes I have giant meaty monster hands my family came from scotland so maybe that is why
I have two of them (one 18" one 16") and both have been that way. No problems of any kind. Guess I just got lucky. Twice.
I carried the G3 during my time in the German Army. Even though, every single unit other than us was already equiped with thw G36.
We still needed the G3 as it could be used as a paddle in our small boats in case the engine died.
Regarding the accuracy, I was absolutely shocked. At 300m with iron sights in prone position I was able to get a 6 round grouping of around 4-5 inches. Guess that ist pretty good for a rifle that was already 36 years in service. I loved this thing and told everyone that wanted to change to the g36, that I will take the G3 over the G36 ervery day. Just put a Zeiss Ziel4 or 6 on it, I catch everything from 400m to 600m, where the 5.56 would reach its end

ich wurde erst am G36 ausgebildet und später in der stammeinheit dann auch am G3 (allerdings mit der besch**** einschiebbaren schulterstütze) ist ein tolles gewehr und ich mag das diopter visier sehr. für eine schnelle zielauffassung auf distanzen unter 150meter ist das G36 aber weit überlegen.

He’s right about the hit or miss with the factory my first bolt carrier exploded but PTR was quick to fix and return the gun under warranty
Definitely one of my favorite rifles of all time. I had an HK91 on my list of dream guns I didn't think Id ever own and my wife bought me one for my 40th birthday. It's dated on the year I was born too.
That's great hope it's been reliable for you, my dad was in the Iranian military and had one during the iran-iraq war in the 80s he always said that it was a great gun if you managed to find a good one That wasn't abused by the people who volunteered to fight and didn't had military training

I used one of these in Northern Cyprus when I was serving my mandatory military out for the Turkish Armed Forces. Yes it’s old, but still quite effective to the day. They have newer rifles (Turkish commando and special forces), but we had the German G3’s. Deutsch magic still worked after thirty odd years.

I served as a regular in the Bundeswehr (PzAufklBat 2, Hessisch Lichtenau, 4. Kp) from 72-74 and, in between, from 76-80 in the RhSF (Rhodesian Security Forces) as SGT and Platooncdr....in both Armys armed with the G 3. Afterwards I rejoined the Bundeswehr again. Most Rhodesians preferred the FN/SLR..but I was quite happy with my G 3 or the RPD with the 80 round Drum. My Batt was the very last unit in the RhSF issued with the Bren Gun (till June 1980)
Carried out my military service 32 years ago here in Sweden. I used the AK4 as G3 is designated in Sweden. However, my captain was of the opinion that if we, no matter how neutral Sweden were, were to be attacked, we must be reasonably familiar with how other weapons systems work. So, he made sure that we got to test shoot both M-16A2, AKM and the FNC (designated AK5 in Sweden). The last one as it was just about to be implemented in the Swedish army, even if only the officers had started using them. It was kind of funny, how the M16A2 and the AKM felt like toys after so much time with the AK4.
The G3 was my issued weapon when I started in the Danish army - my unit was the only one still fielding these.
Everyone else where using Colt Canada AR15’s.
Best thing was my unit was a combat medic training unit - with 7.62 battlerifles 😎
Anyway I loved the G3 - when I went to sergent school I was forces to shift to a 5.56 carbine - it felt like a toy.
When doing guard duty I still used the G3 - slamming the lock forward as a warning had so much more impact with the G3 😅
I was a competative shooter as a young man, and shooting the G3 without scopes was awesome - so accurate!

Ive got a ptr 91 MSG and its never missed a beat. Had 0 issues during "break in". The recoil impulse while heavy is fairly nice due the the roller delay mechanism. Feels more like a push then a kick. I really miss shooting it but its been collecting dust due to the cost of 308 ammo.
I came here to make this comment. The recoil on my 91 has never felt bad to me, especially compared to bolt .308s which I grew up shooting
The G3 will always have a special place in my heart, which happens when you go through hell together. A couple of comments: G3 triggers vary a lot, from glassy smooth to rock crusher rough. I'm talking factory fresh, nothing custom. Also, "the occasional stoppage" is absolutely not par for the course. It takes either extreme neglect or bad ammo to make a proper G3 so much as blink. Also also, lore has it that you can charge a G3 by throwing it hard enough butt first at the barracks floor. Don't ask me how I know, some guy just told me, ok? Anyway, that does say a lot about the total unbreakability of this rifle. Finally, I don't think everybody got your joke about "slight damage to the brass" but never mind that, you can't reload brass that's lost somewhere in the forest, no matter if it's undamaged or bent like a banana.
I had an extraction problem with mine when I got it, brass was hard to extract but steel did better & the spot welds on the band behind the front sight popped off too. The flutes in the barrel were too tight & I sent it back, they replaced the barrel & bolt & even refinished it for me at no charge. While I was disappointed in that, their customer service was excellent.
My PTR91 was my first rifle, I bought it in 2016 after the Pulse shooting because I wasn't going to get caught packing. Mine was pretty wonky out of the box but works a lot better after PTR replaced the bolt. It still has some stoppages where it doesn't go into batter and when I clear it the case will have a dent in it like a bottle opener. I don't know it it's the mags, the steel ammo, or my rifle.
Also the polished marksman trigger is a must buy, the club foot stock is great too.
You were wearing gloves but bare handed those slim handguards get SO hot SO fast.
I have a Cetme 91 In semi and a HK G3 that’s class three. The gun always adjusts my spine after dumping a 20 round mag.
I remember when we, as soldiers in the Norwegian Army, had to pick brass after range days. The hike was strenuous.
I purchased a West German-made HK-91 brand new after graduating high school in the late 1980s. Was able to pick it up for $749 at the time. Hell for stout but the accuracy is virtually impossible to realize because of the HEAVY two stage trigger! It's almost like a heavy double action revolver trigger, really. I added an A.R.M.S. scope mount but that puts the scope so high a raised cheekpiece is needed. Great tool, but not nearly as versatile as a modern AR system.

I used to have one from '78. The trigger was smooth but at least 12 lbs (not exaggerating). If you took your time, I could still get good accuracy out of it.
I was in the military and hated the AR platform. Too complicated, too small caliber, and ridiculously expensive for the performance you get. Just my take.
Congrats on the retirement, hopefully nothing too impactful on the rest of your enjoyable life! Got a buddy who is %100 med, but will spend some time adjusting. I was lucky 21.5 years and all parts still sorta good.

I have that exact gun. Love it. Look into the Bill Springfield Recoil Mitigation system. Makes a bit of difference. Or his Trigger pack which drops trigger pull to 4 and 5 lbs.
I have used the G3 from 2001-2010. I have used it from the colds winter in Norway to the duty part of Afghanistan.. it's the best rifle ever made.
Word in the block is, Green Mountain makes the barrels on the PTR-91. That’s about my only hang up is the lack of a chrome lined, CHF barrel like the H&K G3/91 series rifles.
They do, it's fairly well known. Also I don't think anyone but Battlefield Vegas has managed to shoot out the barrel of a PTR, which is ultimately a shitload of 308.
I get that, but generally speaking a Chromoly barrel with a nitride treatment is well beyond the durability that any owner will demand out of their gear, and has the capability of being more accurate out of the box.
@@echodelta2172 Rim Country MFG makes some pretty solid replacements. That’s why I’ve debated getting an HK parts G3 kit over buying a PTR-91.
@@jebe9337 I’ve been looking into RCM barrel and trunnions because apparently PTR used a different style of trunnion with a different amount of flutes compared to the standard HK, which could sometimes cause feeding issues with certain ammunition

I absolutely adore my PTR91! I need to upgrade mine to have a paddle mag release because mine didn't come with one.
However, the PTR32 is a great intermediate cartridge platform based on the G3!

I don’t have a PTR but I do have the century arms C308 which is built from the original CETME rifle surplus parts in a US made lower. Sweet gun and possibly the most affordable semi 308 out there
I've had an old cetme for a long time. Never any problems and more accurate than I am. Very iconic rifle with the power to back up the looks!
Regarding reloading the brass: it isn't just damaged by the extremely aggressive extraction/ejection, which typically heavily dents the case neck, but it ALSO is damaged by the brass flowing into the flutes cut into the chamber (to improve extraction). Given how rough it is on brass, the only ammo I shoot through my PTR is the brass that has already been reloaded 6 or 7 times and is almost ready to be retired; after it goes through the PTR it goes into the brass recycling bucket.

I used the G3 in the Hellenic army, and we always sent the brass for reloading and used reloaded ammo. You could tell it was reloaded because you could still see the lines from the flutes, but the case was smooth and shot perfectly. So they can certainly be reloaded.
@@perseusrex614 I never said they could not be reloaded. I said I waited until the brass was almost worn out before sending it to the G3/ PTR. I also said the reason I did that was because the rifle was hard on the brass (which it is).
Work hardening is a thing with brass. The more you bend, stretch, or compress it, the more brittle it becomes, until it breaks.
The G3/ PTR exerts significantly more bending, compressing, and shearing forces on the brass than do other 7.62x51mm rifles.
Therefore, the useful lifespan of brass shot through a G3/ PTR is shorter than that shot through other rifles.
Brass shot through a bolt-action rifle with an extremely tight chamber might be re-useable for reloading a dozen times before the work-hardening becomes so severe it must be thrown out. Brass fired through most auto-loading rifles with relatively loose (military spec) chambers can be safely reloaded perhaps only six to eight times.
Brass shot through a G3/ PTR is work hardened so much each time you would be lucky to get 3-4 reloadings before it must be discarded.
So, yes, it can be done. But if you reload and you want to do so efficiently, it is preferable to do as I do and only send "old" brass through the G3.
@@perseusrex614 Also, while it is certainly possible to straighten out the huge dents in the case neck that the G3/ PTR leaves in the brass, it is a lot of extra work to do so, and the neck will never be as concentric, nor will the grip stress be as uniform, after it has been fired through that G4/ PTR.
And you might need special-order mandrels to straighten the case necks, because it dents them so severely that standard resizing mandrels have a tendency to "roll over" the neck instead of straightening it.
It's just a lot of extra hassle to go through: particularly when there is a much easier option (namely, shooting the new brass through other rifles, and then retiring it on the G3)
The AMMO will be extracted, even if the extractor is broke. And very very vicious. Does it wreck ammo, we yes, but the rifle works. Mine is a parts kit, so i have all HK parts. works great
Man, I carried an MP5 on SWAT for a little over 10 years and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done that. I could probably still take it apart in the dark but I much preferred the Benelli M1 Super 90 I had issued to me.
A semi 12ga firing 00 buck puts equivalent of a 9rd +P+ burst of MP5 fire instantaneously with every trigger pull. Shotgun beats SMG's every time for b&c
This is hands down on of my favorite rifles. A good adjustable stock adapter, midwest Mlok rail, and an LPVO make this system fuck.
I retromodded my PCS33 (Hk93 clone from Parabellum Combat Systems) to be my go to gpr, right now I've got an EoTech VUDU 1-6x ffp with SR-1 reticle w/Holosun 507c X2 ACSS mounted 12 o'clock on top for passive NODs use, before that I had an EXPS3-4/Sig Juliet 4x magnifier combo. I definitely dig the versatility of having an LPVO for daytime use (I've always preferred prismatic optics with etched glass for daytime), prd for low light NODs use, however I've noticed having a longer optic like the VUDU on the relatively short top rail isn't very practical for the Hk rollerlock manual of arms, namely in the typical reloading process (lock bolt/charge handle rearward, drop mag, insert mag, Hk SLAP!!! charge handle/bolt into battery) as the objective lense of an LPVO is going to ride up awfully close to the charging handle locking notch. As such, I'm looking at swapping the VUDU 1-6x with an ACOG TA02 with my 507c forward mounted on top at 12 o'clock
@@MaverickHeloPilot i could see where it would be an issue on a shorter system. I'm using a Vortex Viper PST2 1-6 on my ptr91. Its just short enough the hk splap is unimpeded.

I really like my PTR-91, I’ve had no issues shooting steel cased ammo. I put an eotech 2-0 on it with a cheap but pretty decent RTG clamp, I had Bill Springfield “tune” the trigger and I’m using his buffer to calm it down for my destroyed shoulder - now it’s much more fun to shoot, and it’s much easier on my shoulder.
I installed a high angle locking piece, Strike J-comp V2, Springfield buffer and a G21 recoil pad. It’s a pretty light recoiling gun now.
I also added a billet trigger and I polished all of the parts.
I just got one of these a month ago and I immediately fell in love with it. The details, the welds in the receiver and mixed finish work just reminded me of welding class. The simplicity of the system, but the complexity of the design concepts are such a contradiction that I simply can't get enough of it. But yeah it loves to fucking chew up my brass.
Issued in service, never let me down, hated to carry it with all the ammo she is a big heavy girl. I loved it! Out of service bought a HK91 still have it.

Iconic rifle(s). Norwegian Home Guard reservists still use the AG3. I'm glad they didn't decommission the G3 platform completely.
I didnt know that. My brother got training with mp5/7 the last time he went to HV and i saw some picks of the HK-416/417, but I'm happy to hear the AG3 is still out there
Last year was the last one for the AG3 in HV 😕 Now it’s only HK416

I bought my PTR91 a few months ago and I love it. Bought it from a buddy who works at the local gun shop and it has a Magpul PRS stock like the PSG1 and a Witt Machine SME 308 muzzle brake. Loud as hell and spits a hell of a flame but I love it. It's very accurate and with the Witt Machine it doesn't have that bad of recoil. I even fired it one handed from the hip. I have a few videos of it on my channel. Definitely a nice rifle!
I love my PTR 91! I have had it for years. Put an ACOG on it and it is an amazing hog gun for central/east Texas! And I have to say the accuracy you stated is almost EXACTLY what I get out of my rifle. It’ll shoot anything you feed it but you need top tier ammo to get good accuracy.
@BAMFs Tactical Which ACOG do you have on it? I had a TA33 on mine with the chevron reticle and didn't care for that reticle personally, although the weight and eye relief were fantastic.
