It was a dig a music critics who said Strauss’ operas lacked beautiful singing melodies and arias 😉. He secretly admired Puccini, though. Having said that, this rendition is quite awful. The constant sliding from one note to the other, the way too forceful singing…brrrr.
I don't think this is a complete disaster but there are too many phrases where he does slide between notes and loses the music's line. If I didn't know who it was I'd say it was a gifted singer who hadn't refined their technique and therefore, failing as a musician if one is judging them (and they should be) by the highest standards.
I've always thought this aria was Strauss having a dig at Puccini :)

È un'aria notoriamente difficilissima e una delle più belle composte ,unisce tecnica , sensualità, dolcezza, È Strauss !!
