Notre Dame suffers third loss of the season at Clemson

  • The Irish offense struggled throughout the day and Sam Hartman was 12-25 with 146 yards & 2 interceptions as Notre Dame lost to Clemson 31-23. Matt & Pete give their thoughts on the loss and where this leaves Marcus Freeman’s team heading into the final two games of the season.
With the end of the regular season already in sight and a New Year’s Six bowl likely out of reach the discussion shifts to what offseason changes might come down the line for Notre Dame.

They should have Al Golden break down ND’s offensive tape & tell them what they’re doing wrong & how to fix it.

The defining theme of Marcus Freeman’s tenure so far is the fact that his offenses are terrible. ND’s offense has not been this bad in a long time. Maybe since 2007. There is no quick fix. If I am Freeman, I am making wholesale changes to the staff. If it affects the recruiting class, so be it. Because, if the offense is this bad again next year, Freeman could get fired.

Um. I was high on Stuck like everyone else, but at this point, to me, since we are talking about jobs.... Stuck is not cutting it. Even if he has finally hit on a couple 24 and 25 recruits, which I am not sure he has, the past few years are inexcusable. AND why are HIS receivers still unable to get open? They only thing they are doing well at this point in the season is blocking. I like receivers to block well, but in both of the past two seasons they didn't start out blocking well, and they didn't progressively get better, it was all up and down.

How does a top flight program, (ND), not field a powerhouse every year? Should their recruiting staff be scrutinized? Maybe it's the coaching staff?

If Parkers offense is this bad with a veteran QB , what can we expect next year if ND does not bring in a transfer ? They have to get a proven OC. They will have 3 young QBs next year that need proven coaching.

I look at all the comments on here but nobody is getting to the real problem. The problem is the inability of the wide receivers to create separation in the secondary. THEY CAN't GET OPEN!. Notre Dame needs to recruit NFL caliber wide receivers who have the ability to create separation in the secondary.

Drum it into Hartman’s head that his job is to hit the open receiver whoever it is, whether he thinks the guy will catch it or not. If the receiver drops it that’s the receiver’s problem.

If they replace Parker, it should be because he resigned (of his on free will) as OC and went back to TE's. If he does not do that, they need to just show him the door. He isn't self aware enough to stay if he does not resign.
If ND does not replace Parker, Freeman's job is on the line for 24. No one wants that, but it's reality

What I can't figure out is why ND fans don't question the Hartman decision more? He hasn't brought it in big games. ND could have gotten the same wins with Buchner. Maybe this is just a little karma coming back round onto Marcus for grabbing for the brass ring that never existed. Hartman had a propensity to throw picks but everyone glossed that over

Parker never should have been promoted to OC clearly. It is very painful to watch our passing game especially because we have zero deep threats as we have been seen week after week. With 3 losses now I would start Angeli for the two remaining games to determine if we need to grab one from the portal. Painful to watch!!

It’s just confounding how different this team is at home vs on the road. Freeman needs to take a long, hard look at the team’s routine for road game preparation. Something is very clearly wrong there, on top of the offensive coordinator, lack of receivers, injuries, etc.
I think we all also overestimated Hartman. It’s obviously hard to be a good quarterback when you don’t have any real go-to receivers, but Hartman was just not good against Louisville and Clemson. Not just a net 0, like a non-factor, but he was a reason we lost. He missed a LOT of throws today, and probably should’ve had 4 interceptions instead of 2. It looks more and more like he’s a system quarterback, and the Notre Dame system (if there is one) doesn’t mesh with Hartman. Especially since Parker runs possibly the most predictable offense I’ve seen.
The future of the program and this staff depends on their work in the portal this year to get receivers. Brian Kelly was not a good receiver recruiter. He left Freeman in a terrible spot in terms of receivers. Cam Williams is the first receiver recruit ranked in the top-50 overall nationally since Charlie Weis. And we’re seeing something with Ohio State this year-you can get by with an above-average quarterback if you have studs at receiver. We can get by next year with Angeli or Minchey or a transfer (or Carr, who knows) if we get at least ONE GREAT receiver in the portal. But they need to execute on that.
Lastly, I’m very hopeful for Bevacqua. From what I’ve heard from people at NBC, it would be shocking if Bevacqua doesn’t put in more/better effort than Swarbrick into taking the football team to the top tier once again.

This game shows the defense is much improved but the offense needs a new wide receiver coach and offensive coordinator and a new special team coach. Notre Dame should bring in Paul Chryst or Kliff Kingsbury OC and Emmet Jones as WR coach. Levar woods as special teams coach would mesh well with Freeman being an ex LB. Marcus Freeman needs an ex head coach for the offense and Defense so Freeman can focus on player development and building a national championship team. I believe Freeman has a better shot than Kelly but needs to adjust his staff in the offseason.
If Golden leaves for a head coach job
    Freeman should look at
    Jim Leonhard
    Will Muschamp
    Mike Tressel
    For DC.
