@@andys4971 try playing in the middle range. Probably from f to b. It takes more air, but make sure you don't clench. Also, hum a different note than the one that you're fingering. Id recommend between a major 3rd to a perfect fifth above or below the note you are playing. And make sure that you're relaxed in your embouchure and airflow. Strong yet light.
Hey Jeff! I've been watching a lot of your videos and wanted to let you know that your tips are really helpful and inspire me to try out some new stuff on the sax. Keep up the great work!
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I had to play Snarl by John Mackey in my band and I suck at growling. You have much improved my playing experience. THANK YOU!!!!!!
I've been playing sax for 5 years and this is kind of off topic but I've managed to have a good tone but I've been seeing things about sax embouchure and ive noticed they want your top teeth touching the mouthpiece and I realized I've always put my upper lip over my top teeth as well as putting my bottom lip over my bottom teeth of course. Is there a right way to do this and am I doing something wrong because I've managed to play like this and improve for the last 5 years and it's strange I'm seeing things like this now. I've never remember hearing from my teachers that I was doing something wrong in terms of embouchure
Anthony Diecidue ..hi, just my two bits worth - hopefully I'm understanding your question - having your top lip slightly under/ curled for top teeth - reckon Jeff will tell you that different strokes for different folks. There's some greats who preferred to curl top lip under top teeth, very slightly, and if you try both, ie curled top lip under teeth, and then teeth resting on top of mouth piece, the sound will be different. Some people can swap depending on the sound they are looking to achieve. I tend to rest the teeth on the mouth piece top, I have tried the curled lip under (top), it's neat sound too. I was having some lip problem after playing/ practicing too long with new reed, so I got bunch of cotton wool and rolled up and put inside my mouth, along the gums, both bottom and top. Wow, turned out fun, and I understood why so many black Americans can play so well perhaps, the fleshier lips surely do help! Ha!
Michele Pippen thanks. I was just wondering if it was wrong playing like that because another guy on TH-cam said the way I was playing in terms of my embouchure was incorrect and my band teacher taught me differently.
That sort of embouchure is just fine and dandy as far as I know. It's more common among double reed players and clarinet players. Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, and Johnny Hodges are some saxophone players that were known to play with a double lipped embouchure. Pretty good club to be in if you ask me.
This is somewhat late, being a month later. The double embochoure is something that I struggled to fix when I got into high school years ago, it's technically acceptable, and I even use it every now and then on gigs to create a softer, subtone, effect on ballades. But unless you're a professional with experience with the "correct" embochoure, like the musiciand mentioned above, using a double style can hold a beginner/intermediate player back drastically in terms of tone and range growth. It's an extremely common 'mistake' amongst beginners that goes unnoticed a lot of the time until you work with a teacher with saxophone or clarinet experience. In closing, I reccomend working to correct your embochoure and after doing so, experiment with the double embochoure and see what works for you either as a permanent embochoure, or situational embochoure.
If that works for you it works. What is important is that you put the pressure on the mouthpiece with your top and sides of mouth but the bottom has to be as loose on the reed as you can, just enough pressure to seal the air. As far as the outside of your mouth is concerned that is what matters. Learning to keep the back of your tongue up is another battle entirely.
This is a good tutorial on how to growl. I stumbled upon the way to do it but the difference with mine was that I was also letting air out through the sides of my mouth instead of forcing it all through the horn. Thank you.
I will have to try this "humming" method. Historically, and I do mean the last 40 years, I've done my "growling" differently.... I actually do a "gargling" which gives me a very raspy rough and ruggard sound, which works well with the old bluesy and rock and roll sax sound.
Very simple and very clearly explained ! I liked the cow image !! Will try to keep this image in mind next time I try to growl ! I agree that it is not the most appropriate sound for the lower register. MexSax
Hi Jeff, thank you. It helps a lot & I've started to practice the growling piece by piece easily. My question is, 'Growling' does it have (will have) negative impact on our vocal chord (Vocal/Voice)? Just a bit worried. Let me know Thanks Again
Trust me, a good neck strap is amazing. I used to use a strap that would make my neck red after playing. It takes some getting used to at first, but after a while, it's a lot better.
I've only watched a few of your videos but they are wonderful. You are a good teacher and an incredible player. Much appreciate your tips and wisdom. Keep it up!
Hi Jeff, another Hemke user, please post up your comparison of the Select Jazz to the Hemke after you have tried out a few of the D'Addarios if you would or mention it. I haven't tried the select Jazz yet, but I've been using Java greens with the jazz set up. Thanks..
Nice vid again, Jeff.! This one is something easy enough for a beginner like me can understand. Even most of your videos are something sound difficult, but i tried to learn a lot from you!! thanks!!
I've always wanted to growl because I know somebody else who can growl, but he does it differently than from this. I think. I think it's also a really good technique also if you're soloing in the 12 bar blues or whatever you want.
Hello Jeff Schneider! I was wondering if you could make a video about how to work and develope patterns in one scale... Im not into jazz.... I play electronic music and normally this music just work in one scale... I hope you understand what I mean. , thanks a lot for your straight videos about saxophone lessons!
Ive been playing for over a year alto and now tenor, and I use mouthpiece patches because I have sensitive top teeth and they reduce vibrations. They do mellow the sound though.
Luv that scream/growl! Yes, I'm not a saxophonist, but a frustrated keyboard player, who actually plays very authentic sax solos(I can hear you laugh!), yet that growl sound eludes me. Still using the Roland U-20's "FF Sax" (which is quite good), but would prefer using real multisamples, like these of yours. Would you consider sampling 4sec long notes, at intervals of say, every fourth note and selling them, so I can use them on my Roland Fantom X6 sampler? Of course you'll get mentioned when using them!
OMG This helped me so much... but I am getting a warbling on the low notes any advice?...I have been trying to get a growl now for about a year.... thank you!!!
Im a guitar player and I watch your stuff always as Im a huge Parker fan..did Parker ever use the growl? When I think of the growl I think the Stones Brown Sugar..thankxx!
I use mouthpiece cushions, destroyed my first mouthpiece by biting on it :/ It also helps me to keep the tone consistent, as I tend to shift the position of my mouth more often while playing.
Thanks a lot I have went thought many many videos on how to growl and your video tough me and I will show this to my sax teacher and I will also subscribe and like this video
I accidentally growled once because I like to randomly hum and sing into my sax all the time (mostly to annoy friends but it also sounds cool) and I was like "I'm a genius" and then just continued to growl for the whole day😂
I’ve seen a lot of like saxophone cover videos and I was wondering r they constantly growling? At first I thought it was because they just have a really expensive saxophone
Took me 2 hours to make my first short growl. Don't give up in the first minutes, time is the key!

Every time I try to growl, my humming gets cut off as soon as my air flow is strong enough to make a sound. Help?
i guess u can growl now but if not try an easier/beginner mouthpice. Had the same problem
I play Bari and I had to put a ridiculous amount of air behind the hum to growl

Great tip, Jeff. Thanks for your time, knowledge and instructions.
Bro this video helped out so much! I know I am a few years late, but I am finally able to growl! Thanks!
omg Thank you. After all those other videos of teaching me how to growl, this was the only one to properly teach me how to growl.
Excellent class with a lot of technique and joy. Great tips.
