  • How to do a GOOD Backfull!
    0:00 - 4:40 The physics and biomechanics of how to twist efficiently
    4:40 - 9:06 Drills leading up to a backfull
    9:06 - "why am i not twisting properly"
    I've had many requests for this, and instead of just showing drills, which most people know, I've taken it a bit further and explained how it all works to hopefully assist you in your twisting difficulties.
    There is more explanation in this video than others because understanding how it works is actually as important as the drills
    Open to questions below
    Thanks to BounceInc for letting me play in their amazing facility

    amazing!!! finally somebody used physics to explain the twists! Street trickers are nice, but we need to respect the pros!!!

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      oh i have full respect for the self taught trickers
      but when 'teaching' people how to do it properly, you should definitely know what you're talking about :P
      technical definitely doesn't look as "cool" but you can always add some style to it afterwards

      “Street trickers”? I don’t see “pros” doing quad fulls off one leg, or standing cart quads. Swinging or doing anything out of snatchcannons. (Cork in) or dub full ins. These street trickers u speak of have surpassed “pros”

    My cheerleading couch is the first person that I heard saying “biomechanics of twisting” then he show me how in reality this is how you should start doing it after that add your own style! (I also practice Parkour, on there the twisting technique feel like you don’t get into the flip just the twist)

    The science of twisting is so fascinating--I've been watching (not doing) gymnastics for ages and wondering how gymnasts did twists in the air vs on the floor.
    I know artistic gymnastics isn't your sport, but do you happen to know what kind of twisting is used for the twisting Yurchenko skills on vault?

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      these are the only ways to do it.
      Vault uses a combination of all, contact twist pushing off the table, cat twist as they snap straight from an arch into a straight shape as they drop an arm or elbow to the side, whilst also going from a slightly wider shape into a small shape.
      It's all the same just a lot faster and everything is on a smaller scale because it doesn't take much to spin a body when skis aren't attached

I have been on a trampoline for most of my life and have a background of 8 years in competitive gymnastics. @aerialskier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don't panic! haha
      There are plenty of other ways to get twists done, eg. throwing your head into it, whipping your body around and twisting off the ground. This is simply the way the mechanics work and that's all. As I'm glad you've discovered, they do work efficiently, but you will over time develop your own "style" and the way that feels best for you.

    Don't leave out the Head It is the key to knowing where you are along with the Eyes keeping them open is VERY important and looking in the right direction can make the difference of knowing where you are going and getting totally lost and freaking out...Also it is important in the future to learn your back twisting skills in the same direction as your front twisting skills.it does make multiple twisting skills much easier to learn.!!! Many people forget to keep their entire body tight from the tip of their toes to the tips of their fingers, weather they are extended up or twisting keeping tight body control is also Very important to an effortless twist. Also twisting in the same direction forwards and backwards helps .....

    Hey David, I saw your video on Barani's and noticed that you switched arm drops for each twist direction in the tilt twist. If I'm a right twister, this video says to drop my right arm (2:38) but the Barani video says to drop my left arm (6:06). Is there a reason for this? Thanks!

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dylan,
      Yes that is correct and this is an often very confusing component. Indicating that I still need to explain this better in future videos.
      When you do a back full you drop your right arm down. It's not the fact that it's your right arm, its the place in which your arm drops. eg. if you stand up and pretend your rotating backwards (lets say your feet are lifting up towards the door) and you drop you right arm, it drops towards a spot on the wall, that spot on the wall is where a drop needs to happen for you to spin right. If you now turn to face the other way, and imagine your body is rotating forwards, you feet are still lifting up towards the door, your body is rotating the same as before it's just facing the other way, there still needs to be a drop in the same place as before - to the wall, it just now happens to be your left arm that can do that.
      So it's more about where the drops happen, and that determines, which arm needs to be doing it.
      I hope that helps

    Hi! Not sure if you’ll respond but I have a question. I have my back full down to a pinch with completely straight body and straight arms but I’m having issues getting enough rotation to do a double full. Any tips?

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you will need a little bit more power because the twist takes a little energy away from the actual flip. not a whole lot more, but if you set a higher and slower layout, you'll have more time to get the double twist in. It'll come down to how you're doing the double twist, if we're going to be completely mechanical (i'd suggest trying into a pit first or off a diving board) after you drop your first arm to the side, once your have rotated a half twist in that position (with one arm still held up) you then switch them, the other will come down and your first arm drop will lift back up next to your head, that will make you spin very quickly. It won't look nice because one arm is up but once you're feel how it generates twist power you can then make it look nice by cutting the switch movement a little short, and wrapping your arms into your body.

    Hey! For some reasons I drift to the side slightly (one of my feet land on the center line of the red X instead of it being in between both feet. i drift to the left and spin to the left, maybe theres a relationship) while doing most of my back flips, no matter the position (unless doing no bounce on the tramp) and it makes me uncomfortable to try fulls. Any tips?

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      could be a number of things, or combination.
      1. you take off crooked because you push off one foot more than the other.
      2. you have a tendency to look slightly over one shoulder when you're doing a flip and this will lead to an imbalanced takeoff
      3. when you throw your arm up over your head into the flip, one moves further or more powerfully than the other creating imbalance.
      4. your trampoline is not even :P
      5. you takeoff with one foot in front of the other slightly, which would explain why you're straighter when you have no bounce, because you most likely start with them together.
      6. your feet are too close together on takeoff meaning you have a higher chance of being unbalanced on takeoff.
      hope one of these helps, concentrate on being balanced, even weighted, even effort on both sides and legs hip width apart for takeoff, keep head neutral and still.

    Hi, I am having trouble with opening up too early and only making it halfway, and I also get very confused in the middle of the full on where my head is and I tend to leave my head back or just look straight towards the ground and my fulls (on the rare occasion I can ever get them past halfway) just look very awkward and I don't know what I can do to fix it. Any tips?

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well you've described your own problems, so you already know what to fix.
      Stay in it longer, keep your head still, and only look for the ground as you're about to land it.
      if you upload a video to your account and send the link i can look at them. my guess is your body is arched and resisting the twist because if you're staring at the ground, it's unlikely you're in a straight shape

    • @aerialskier

      100% correct. which ever arm you would drop, instead you lift the opposite arm for the same effect. Leading to the next tutorial video for multi-twisting power

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      this means you're leaning too far back on take-off. Your hip and shoulders are too far behind your heels on leaving the trampoline, you need to send everything up straight, a small hip press is correct but not too far, do all of the video drills and ensure you don't travel you you should be able to re-teach yourself the correct trajectory

      Back full on the ground is pretty much all contact twist and you may be able to sneak some arm drops in but the main thing is pulling the knees through the rotation and twist

    Simply the best scientific explanation about twisting out there! Thanks!

    Thanks a lot, it's really helpful! However, unitl now I only managed to do a half twist - 3/4, I really struggle to add the very last half-quarter twist. Could you tell me what I need to improve, like my twisting speed or the position of my arms during the process?

      chances are your body isn't tight, or you'have an arch etc.
      for the best twist, body should be as straight as possible, that's why doing a bigger one is easier because then you don't have to break form to get your feet to the ground.
      try and keep you arms as straight as possible for as long as you can, and do not look for the ground until you are coming down

    You probably don't use this channel anymore but can you please do a Rudy tutorial your videos are so good I wish you made more

      the rudi tutorial is blended into the doublefull video. Concepts are the same, mechanics are the same, but you're just facing the other way and need a slightly different start, as demonstrated in the vid :)

    I’ve got a back half down but I can’t seems to get enough power to twist beyond about 3/4 any tips?

      link me to a video and i'll have a look.
      My guess without looking is that you're breaking your body line. but i'll be able to give tips if i see it

    Since there isn't enough time to do the fully exaggerated arm motions of tilt twisting on the ground, what is the best alternative way to move and wrap the arms using this principle?

      I can already do a full on the ground but not very effectively. I would like to learn the proper technique before I go for double fulls. Thank you!

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can definitely do a full with straight arms as shown in the video, when wrapping for a double, have the first arm the same and as you bring the second arm down super fast, the first one comes back up slightly and the both then wrap into you body

    Can you do a video on spotting for flips? Like what athlete’s should expect to look at and look for. Arabians especially

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sabacca drill (7:20 in the video) is the exact drill you want for arabians, just pulling into a tuck and bringing it the the feet.
      Vision on take-off is neutral to ensure no pre-turn and then once off the ground, spot behind as the body rotates to be squared off with the floor.

    When I try twisting my body twists seperatly and not all together

    I have the problem that I go too fast into the twist and then forget the somersault. Do you have any ideas how I can twist later? :)

      @aerialskier  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      alternate between twisting skills and non twisting skills to feel the difference in your takeoffs. Prioritise the flip first as that is the most important always.

    one of the best tutorials out there! without a gymnastics background or anything i would like to learn a back full, im able to do back flips and layouts although my layouts are very bad in my opinion. When i do a layout i end up about 1.5/2m behind my starting point. Do you have a tip solution or drill i could try?

    • @aerialskier
      @aerialskier  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that means your whole body is tipping backwards onto your heels in order to create the angle for rotation. Do the Backdrop drills until they're amazing, making sure that you are pushing out of your toes off the trampoline.
      A drill i use for people who struggle with this is to start at the end of the trampoline, heels nearly on the springs, and jump forwards (but rotating backwards) to your back, to learn how to press the hips into rotation rather than completely relying on a lean back.
