- What an exciting visit to my store! Alex Archbold of Curiosity Inc was kind enough to make a visit with a journal that was about 250 years old!
What an amazing time it was. George Washington, Napoleon and more.
Alex was kind enough to share the video he had shot for me to share on my channel. I look forward to more book adventures with Alex down the road!

ABOUT BARRY BAILEY
Hi! I'm Barry Bailey!
I love everything about books!
When I opened Bailey Books (used and out of print) it was a dream come true. For my wife too, because she finally got me and all my book stuff out of the house! I have a passion for searching for books, buying books, selling books, trading books and even making books! I’ve studied at the American Academy of Bookbinding in Telluride, Colorado the past few years learning the craft.
So now I can create fine leather bindings (not quite a master binder just yet, but working on it), and I do repairs on books that have been in the family for generations or read to pieces and need a little TLC.
There is not much I’d rather be doing than spending time in the book store, surrounded by the sights and awesome aroma of old books and talking to fellow book lovers. There aren’t many of us left so come visit, browse and enjoy a trip back in time to an “old school” bookstore.
His handwriting gives you a clue, the kind of person he was, I see an educated person, a person that enjoyed reading, liked history and art, because he was an artist himself!
That book is a real historic, and valuable find. Alex respects the items of the past, with a true passion.
Debbie here,,that would be awesome to see in a museum so everyone could read copies of the pages. What a great find Alex.
This looks very much like what I have seen referred to as a "Commonplace Journal". I've only been learning about them myself but this has ALL the usual ingredients that are put in one. WOW!!!
I love the smell and feel of old books I inherited a collection of Tatler books from 1750 from my grandfather love the way bind books back then it's like a piece of art
Loved this tour of the historical journal with you both. Charming.
I just found this channel today I love old books especially hand written.
Dad jokes are real with Alex. :D
Oh how I love this book/journal! I had ancestors who lived in Ireland in that era.
Where has this channel been !!??? Why am I now meeting you!!??? *presses subscribe button
It would be lovely to publish this. The mix of the personal and the historical events is really interesting.
GREAT HISTORY THAT I DIDN'T NO, THANKS ALEX
Alex slow down you are so excited, you have to give this man time to finish his sentences, ❤️
Wow, I'd love to have that book. What a treasure
Alex, Just a few tips for you...you used the word font in referring to script. Font only refers to type and printed letters, in script the different kinds of script are referred to as hands or a hand, as in Spencerian, Copperplate, etc. Yes, the some of these same names do also come in type fonts, however those are based on the original script hands. I hope this is helpful info for you and your viewers.
Also, the letter "s" came in two forms: the form that we recognize today, and the "long s" (which also came in two forms), which sometimes (especially in print rather than script) looks like the letter "f" without the horizontal line through the middle. So, the word "also", which you thought was spelled "alfo", had one of the forms of the long "s", rather than the letter "f" in it.
Very interesting. Enjoyed you both.
Spratt a name to be reckoned with!
Amazing find, I am a real bookworm and was fascinated by what your friend (Mr Baily) had to tell us about books. I hope that it goes to someone who will really appreciate it. Thank you Alexander .
Thanks for sharing, it was fascinating
Absolutely fascinating! Thanks.
Hello. Can you let su know, where Alex did find it and where has it gone? What a wonderful history journal.
White gloves are also fiber and thus can be drying to older materials. People were taught to sketch back then as his illustrations show.
A museum in Ireland maybe interested, if they were made aware of this journal. Or an English Navy Museum. Looks like James (Jack) Spratt who was a hero who fought at Trafalgar looks like he might be the same as this James Spratt. Looks like he was a son of the creator of the Journal. Wonder if there is any connection to the nursery rhyme.... Jack Spratt could eat no fat.... ?

Thanks, that's so interesting.
Beautiful penmanship! Extremely interesting. What is this book worth?
Very interesting
This is such an unusual journal. I may have missed it in the video, but just curious about the provenance of the journal?... had stayed in the journal writer's family all of these years or not? Just curious.
Also in these covid times.
Don't use hand sanitizer as the chemicals in that can affect the paper.
Probably not best to lick your fingers when turning pages and wash your hands after touching the book and before eating food.
If in doubt, ask a conservator :)
I learned this in grad school. I had always said it incorrectly. It is miss-cell-AH-knee, not miss-cell-A-nee.
Does anyone remember where Alex found this book?
Great. The background music is difficult to deal with. That's probably just me though as I am super sound sensitive.
What did Pepys diaries look like I wonder. There were other diarists of that time too, so journals should have been available to purchase as we would buy a diary nowadays. Anybody clarify? XXX
What happened to the book ?
There used to be Nelson's pillar in Dublin city don't think he was very popular as it was blown up in the sixties as an Irish woman I think that is a very interesting book
Thank you for this interesting video. I stopped to watch it because I saw Curiosity Inc in the title
but I liked and subbed because of the content.
But lets get serious now. Please answer the question we all want to know.
What would this book be worth? We won't hold you to the price. Just a ballpark figure.
Same, came because of Alexander and subscribed because he looks interesting.
What happened to the book? Who purchased it?
That book should be copied and the new copies printed. I am sure there would be a market.
