  • How was the dating life in ancient Japan? What were the marriage customs?
    Kofun Japan was more egalitarian than in later periods. It was quite matriarchal, which had effects on dating, marriage, and the role of women. Gender roles were quite different back then. This only changed once the ancient Japanese began adopting more Chinese culture, especially Confucianism.

      I often wondered if the comfort women atrocity during ww2 wasn't just a kinda cultural misunderstanding since prostitution was wildly accepted in Japan that comfort women would kinda be seen as more along the lines of forced labor rather then rape.
      Yeah, I said it. Kinda makes sense though.

    Some of that matriarchal culture still survives today. In traditional Japanese families, the wife runs the household and controls the finances, giving her husband an allowance. My ex-wife is Japanese, and her family name comes from her mother because her father had an older brother and her mother didn't have any brothers to carry the name. Her father tried talking me into taking their family name when we got married because her brother didn't have kids. In the family registry, she was listed as the head of household.

      I'm skeptical of the last segment attributing the decline of sexual freedom and a more matriarchial society in Japan to Confucian Chinese culture. Here are my two main reasons:
      China, itself, contrary to popular belief was fairly matriarchial as well in some respects. Women were in many cases the real power behind the throne of the Emperor whether as the Empress Dowager or as the Empress Consort. Concubines themselves tended to wield quite a bit of political influence. Confucianism nominally placed male above female, but the reality of this being put into practice is more complicated. One factor for this is that age was seen as a greater marker of social status than sex, i.e. elder women & mothers > younger men & sons.
      A much stronger rebuttal would however be that the peak of Chinese influence in Japan was during the Tang dynasty. This period is known as the Golden Age of Women in China precisely because women had near equal status to men. Sexual freedoms were prevalent and even encouraged. Women could form their own associations & sports teams, be active in outdoors life, and princesses dominated the courts. China during this period was also more Buddhist and Taoist than Confucian in and of itself. In fact, Hei'an sexual culture is often said to have echoed that of the Tang dynasty.
      I'm not sure if you might be referring to the decline in female status at a later period in Japanese history, where we saw a similar trend in China where their status precipitously plummeted during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Regardless, it is definitely an overgeneralization to say that the social status of women in Japan declined because of traditional Chinese and Confucian values when these were not static in China either.

      well, usually those historical anime are set during the Edo or Sengoku eras (Kofun would be about as mainstream a historical setting in Japan as like, idk, the Minoan civilization would be to the west) and in that case, strong female leaders would not be very accurate. Maybe a little in the Sengoku era but not at all in Edo.

      @@leenananzeh No offense but if your talking about sex outside of marriage, I think, Nothing is wrong with having sex outside or marriage or relationships, bc it's human nature and sex can make us feel good not just desire but mental and physical health. I don't advocate for having sex with just about anyone ,without knowledge or protection for the simple reason of health and staying safe. But having sex in itself isn't bad, I hate how people especially women think that having sex for the first time means your losing something. It doesn't, your still the same person no matter how dramatic Hollywood movies make it seem. Even the term "losing your virginity " is so stupid and inaccurate. Your just having sex for the first time, your hymen is just opening up. Most people in a relationship do have sex bc of love and it's a way of showing affection. Experience can lead to more knowledge about yourself as well. As a virgin myself who chooses not to have sex bc I haven't found anyone I yet trust or love enough to do "it" with. Having a positive attitude toward sex is important . Some relationship do end bc of sex and some don't, I would say most don't. Since I've never liked anyone so I can't relate to a break up but I get the feeling of losing a part of you after a breakup, I think it's bc of of poor self image when we put our trust in other and exepct people to complete us we loose yourself in the process bc we're so eagure to please the other person since we see ourself trough their eyes.
      But I things it' fair to name that divorce rates have and are going down bc people are choosing to actuallt take the time to know themselves and partners wich leads to marriage happing later.
      Tho I still agree with you that the experience can be good when it's with someone you fully trust or love, that shouldn't and hopefully won't be basis of your relationship. It's like having a best friend if your friendship is bases on simple things like what kind of music you both listen to and not how that person treats and support you it won't last long. Sorry for the long answer .

      my great grandmum's parents were uncle and niece, and she lived to 106 and was quiet beautiful in her youth, had 22 kids with her husband who was also her first cousin. The true evil of incest, as i found out looking to my family; was power dynamics. It's also a genetic disaster if you come from a diverse background, as 99.99% of people do, which fortunately my family did not till the 1950s. The only cultures who practice cousin or marrying your aunt/uncle are also those where women are still truly oppressed economically and by clan dynamics. In the developed 21st century, things may not be perfect; but we are so spoiled we often lose optics on why things were regarded as bad, not to mention what bad truly is.

      In Proto-Indo-European society, women had so little rights that they were considered the property of the father of the household, and when they were married off to different families, it wasn't in the sense of union between two people like today, but it was rather in the sense that a woman was given as a gift to the other household, usually in exchange for either material goods or favors.

    When I was a teenager I lived in Japan for a year and I agree that Japanese culture has a strong matriarchal flavor viewed from my middle-class overseas Chinese background. I have come to view Japanese 'home' culture to be quite similar to Malay where men are married into the women's household.
    Recently, while doing my research about a Japanese company for a job interview, I was pleasantly surprised that the founder named his company based on a confucian concept and I appreciate the respect and esteem which Japanese society confers to Confucius.

      Good question indeed. This is off of memory so someone correct me if it's inaccurate.
      iirc they did not hunt down the biological father. It wasn't a huge deal, the child was assumed to be the child of the married couple, with full rights just like a "normal" child.
      In the Heian they were lax with regards to bastards. I guess raising a child in the household was enough to make it legitimate.

    • @JP-rf8rr
      @JP-rf8rr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@Linfamy
      I find that odd, especially since such a system would enable a new mouth to feed at any moment without additional support from the father. Say what you want about the monogamous west, but their system helped clarify who was responsible for whose child. It seems simpler and more practical than having your daughter randomly producing children from an unknown stranger and dealing with the natural consequences yourself with no compensation.

    • @Linfamy
      @Linfamy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I'm not sure how prevalent bastard births were, it may not have been often enough to make a difference.
      Remember these were the elites, they likely didn't have problem feeding their children, and the advantage of political marriages was an incentive to have more children.

    In rural Holland, up till rather recently, say, World War Two, particularly farmers practiced comparable courting procedures.
    The suitable candidate for future son-in-law would be allowed to sleep with his wife-to-be untill she became pregnant. Then the couple married.
    If no pregnancy resulted, the relationship ended. Probably this method was to ensure a marriage would be fruitful so the new couple and their children could take over the farm and start taking care of their parents and parents-in-law when they became too old to work.

    Dunno if it's truth or a myth, but I've heard that one way some courtesans reduced the risk of STDs was... by having only one client.

      I believe this was the basic practice during the Kamakura period. I read Towazugatari (問わず語り), and it seemed to be the case then. But this "client" wasn't a prostitute. The main character, Lady Nijo, was a concubine to the emperor. Emperors only had one concubine, and Lady Nijo was thrown out of the court when she had an affair. Concubines were only allowed to "have relations" with the emperor, and at this time the emperor only had one concubine. Also, in the Kamakura period, while concubines were highly respected as being part of the courtier class, prostitutes were thought about in almost the same way they are thought about today - to the point many concubines didn't want to even be seen talking with a prostitute. But the thing is we are talking about the Kofun era in this video...which is WAY WAY WAY before the Kamakura Period. It was probably not the same then.

Becouse there were Utagaki (Villagers would sing and dance on the way up to a mountaintop, where singing, dancing, eating, and the reciting of poetry would occur, in celebration of the beginning of spring or autumn.Closely associated with harvest rites, and therefore fertility, these events often also led into much free sexual activity.) since Nara period, similar events exist in southern China, Vietnam, Indochina Peninsula, Philippines and Indonesia.

    If only the modern day world could have equal men's and women's rights across the world, I am an old fashion type of feminist, not these feminazis, I just want universal equality (obviously there would be some exceptions here and there, that is bound to happen), and the UK Parliament and European Union it does not help that some females can make some crazy remarks here and there, but yeah pretty much universal equality on stuff

      Why don't you call yourself an egalitarian then, why continue to associate yourself with such a damaged brand?

      We seems to be going on the right path recently. Even though there some wrong paths we took , generally the future is bright.

    I love your videos! Please keep it up! One correction though: You said females being allowed to succeed to the throne ended "recently" in the "Meiji period". That's not correct. It ended in the Nara period in 770 CE, because of Empress Shotoku's scandals. So not so recent. lol.

      Thanks for watching! About the correction, female rulers didn't end after Empress Shotoku. There were 2 more empresses after Shotoku (much later), and it wasn't until Meiji that there was an official law banning female rule.
