I have loved Reggae since the 70s and this is a great song, but fair's fair, The Clash did a great version of this - the 12 inch extended two part version is astonishing.
Agree, the message is essentialy faithful. In any case it would have been hypocritical of th Clash to invoke the name of a god when they were at least non religious if not atheist. Some may choose to call on a god for help in the struggle, others do not. The important thng is that we do fight the fight against oppression the song tells us is going on. Kick over the system!
Not a Rasta myself but I do know there are a good amount of Rastas that don't smoke weed or see it more as a sacrament so to speak like Mutabaruka. I think the main problem we have in the west especially is that most people hear Rasta and they automatically think a guy with dreads that smokes a lot of ganja when Rastafari is really a worldwide political, social, and religious movement its not just about smoking. respect
@Doctorfreek really because The Clash version is just a cover of this and Willie Williams just used Real Rock by The Soul Vendors for this so in fact that would be the "real" deal
@kingbungay 21.000 people were that much chilled out by the mere listening of this piece, that there was no reason for worring about anything at all, not to mention about doing some rating crap on youtube...
It's just a different version I think they were just trying to make it their own by changing the lyrics a bit. The message is still essentially the same though.
My apologies to Judgement220,my 1st statement 'Jesus is not Jehovah' and 'learn Hebrew' was not meant for you but for 'Kankri Vantas'. Please check out Mutabaruka and his experience in Rastafari and the connection with Marcus Garvey's teachings...............
You have to remember that the Clash were a punk group that was inspired by leftist ideology and thought. Joe Strummer used to wear a 'Red Brigade' shirt during live shows. They had great respect for dub and reggae, but they weren't Rastafarians. I don't think religion was high on their list. They probably appreciated the politics of the Williams' track, but had no use for the faith based aspect.
If you were somebody who knows about rastafarianism, you would simply say a rasta is someone that holds high reverance to RAS(prince) Tarfari or his other name Haile Selassie which means Might of the Trinity, the defender of the Ethopian Orthdox Church. Comments like you have to smoke ganja and grow long hair to be a rasta is very ignorant.
yes.. ganja smokin is not the main thing about rastas.. rastafarism just allows smoking just no like chricstianality, but as the fact, this is not a main feature of the rastafarism.. once i talked to a girl mate about music kinds, and when i said about ragga one young guy even didn'no bout that, and she just said: oh its just that kind of music where musicants are ganja smokers lol.. i wanted to say about that fact that rasta is not always ganja smoker...
Rastafari= Ras (prince) Tafari Mekonnen or H.I.M Haile Salessie I. He didnt have locks or smoked a pund of ganja. Rastafari is to be princely in the eyes of Jah, the King of kings and Lord of lords, holding His teachings to heart. I suggest the folks that think they know what Rasta is, go and read Haile Salessie's autobiography. (excuse the spelling).
dude i didn't say it's all about smokin herb, but if u r a rasta u have to, just like christians have to go to church and read the HOLY BIBLE, just like muslims that have to pray to ALL-AH a read the QURAN, and many other things. Rastafari is a religion that if u accept it u have to deal with all those things smokin herb, having dreadlocks believe in JAH as the ruler of mankind, it's just like that "HERB IS THE HEALING OF THE NATION, ALCOHOL IS THE DESTRUCTION" #Bob Marley. peace to u bro
dude, a rasta should have dreads to distinguish from others it's like a symbolism, should smoke cannabis to meditate dude i said gettin close to jah in the meaning of meditation, the best way to tell u about babylon and zion it's like i said in one of my comments ZION is like JERUSALEM of catholics or MECCA of islam, ZION is ETHIOPIA the state where the god of them has had born HAILE SELASSIE I, but it's not necessary to repect all of them, i am a rasta myself ;)
You are incorrect, its because of Marcus Garvey why there is rastafarianism. I'll tell you what, stop pretending to know what rastafarianism is. Its clear that all your knowledge of the subject comes from listening to Bob Marley. Educate yourself.
The Clash say "Kick it Over" and they never ran from controversy. Get the versions of from Black Market Clash, and also Dee-Lite "Apple Juice Kissin" uses the piano sample from that. Rave On...
this is the last one don't reply cuz i won't, when i first heard of jamaica was bob marley, when i first learned how to smoke a blunt was bob marley, when i first heard reggae it was bob marley, when i first heard of rastafari religion it was bob marley but surely as everyone i searched and learned about it so ur wrong my mate RASTAFARI was invented in ETHIOPIA in AFRICA not in JAMAICA, GARVEY is jamaican he was surely a prophet but the main one was haile selassie I, peace up, u should research
Not all rastas smoke or have dreads. Did you know that Rastas read the Bible? Did you know that there are Rastas(the more educated ones) that are Christians and believe that Jesus is the Christ and not Haile Selassie? Bob Marley was a 12 tribe Rasta, They have changed so much since the death of Bob Marley and a lot of them, not all of them, are really Christians since a lot of them got educated through Selassie's Loyalists in Ethiopia.
LOL!! I rest my case. I see you are just embarrassed by your ignorance. Study the History of Rastafari movement, more importantly study about Marcus Garvey. Again, Educate yourself and you will truly have a more substantive understanding of Roots Reggae.
probably a choice by their recording company, wanting to appeal to the stereotypical youth of the 60's on who gravitate toward atheist and anti-conformist ideals. Westerners are very concerned about profit and getting back what they put in, and atheists are a very large market compared to true Rastafarians.
I have loved Reggae since the 70s and this is a great song, but fair's fair, The Clash did a great version of this - the 12 inch extended two part version is astonishing.
definitely!......I think many people don't realize that Rastafari is about a lot more than just smoking weed
One of my all time favorite REGGAE JOINTS!...very fond memories...Peace and Love!

err, Rastafari*
The Clash probably didn't say "Praise jehovah" Because jehovah is jesus. Also they might've wanted to avoid religious controversy.
The Clash say "Kick it Over" and they never ran from controversy.
Get the versions of from Black Market Clash, and also Dee-Lite "Apple Juice Kissin" uses the piano sample from that.
Rave On...
Why didn't The Clash have the balls to use Jehovah name? Instead they say "remember to kick it over". WTH is that supposed to mean?
this is the last one don't reply cuz i won't, when i first heard of jamaica was bob marley, when i first learned how to smoke a blunt was bob marley, when i first heard reggae it was bob marley, when i first heard of rastafari religion it was bob marley but surely as everyone i searched and learned about it so ur wrong my mate RASTAFARI was invented in ETHIOPIA in AFRICA not in JAMAICA, GARVEY is jamaican he was surely a prophet but the main one was haile selassie I, peace up, u should research
