Brilliant reaction and spectacularly compelling assessment. You both made my heart smile. One of my favourite U2 songs, *Gone* from my undeniably most beloved U2 album, *POP.* The instrumentation performance alongside the stellar engineering and mixing, right to the irrefutable lyrical depth delivered by way of Bono's glorious vocals. This song, as you both have mentioned already, is an example of a band in perfect balance - a sincere and innate chemistry: a band beyond their current point in time. U2 is a wonderfully unique and legendary band. There will be no replacement for them. Let us enjoy U2's genius for as long that we have remaining with one of greatest bands of all-time - *U2!*
Thank you: both of you for understanding and enjoying the work of U2 and conveying your comprehension so beautifully to other viewers.
Finally, I would suggest other amazingly incredible songs from this U2 "POP" record; tracks like "Please", "Wake-up Deadman", "If You Wear That Velvet Dress", "Discotheque", "Mofo", and "Staring at the Sun" just to name a handful of some of U2's *POP's* true Gems!
Thank you for reacting to *Gone* it was so nice to hear someone as honest and truthful as you both to review such a fantastic song.

My personal interpretation is that it is the end of an era/cycle. Prior to the 90s U2 had been somewhat of the pious flag wavers as saviors of Rock. This was partially self inflicted via their own imagery, but also real as they had religious roots, then followed that up with rock crusader songs and tours like The Conspiracy of Hope concerts. Then the 90s came, and that was their reinvention into Bowie inspired territory, not only in terms of RockStar Alter Ego characters, but also approach to art performance, music etc. They even started this new era in Berlin (Hansa Studio), where David Bowie recorded his Berlin trilogy. In the 90s U2 did a 180 and tossed out all their old stripped down streamlined soul savior approach and persona, and went darker, deeper, denser, dancier, more decadent, more devilish, delicious, and droll. Gone is from the last of U2's 90s trilogy. It can be seen as a goodbye to that era, and more specifically to the artifice. "Goobye, You Can Keep This Suit of Lights, I'll Be Up With the Sun". It is a Goodby to the The Fly, Macphisto and Mirrorball Man. It is also a Goodbye to the overall approach and aesthetic. Note, the next full studio album is All That You Cant Leave Behind, where its theme and aesthetic is clean and simple (it is even more back to basics than the 80s, as each of those 80s albums had a distinct theme and artistic direction. ATYCLB was purely, band and song.)
Like most Bono Lyrics, there are often more layers. There is definitely a Goodbye to that specific era of U2's trajectory. Yet there as a more universal theme of letting go, release, and giving one's self to something greater than one's self/ego - That can be interpreted as GOD, relationship, band, art, music etc.: You're holding on to every little thing so tightly, Till there's nothing left for you anyway, Goodbye". "You wanted to get somewhere so badly, You had to lose yourself along the way"

I believe Bono dedicated this song to Michael Hutchence of INXS, I remember on the live version of this song Bono would yell "Hutch!" at the beginning.

U2. Legendary band. I was firtunate to see them live in their early years (Just after Boy). Bono already was brilliant on vocals, connecting with the audience. You hit the nail on the head!!
Check out Matisyahu-similar charisma, group chemistry. Step Out Into the Light or King Without a Crown.

U2 is my ALL time favorite band, but as for the future, Bono’s son, Eli, is is a band called Inhaler - and they are VERY promising! If you get a chance, check out their song, “My Honest Face”. Great song!! Thank you for these U2 reviews!

Lyrically, I think this song is much more introspective. Guilt and moving beyond that guilt seem to be at the heart of it. Up with the sun is likely a reference to Jesus. He's criticizing himself as "hurting his lover until he realized that his desire to escape from the religious rules and values that governed his life was actually just greed. Great choice of a song, though, and I enjoyed your analysis of the music.
