      It's because he knows he has a 300k+ starting salary waiting for him at the end of the training. Young physicians fall into this trap all the time. It really is a big joke/stereotype of doctors as Dave always says. After that many years of delayed gratification, many doctors want to drive benzes rather than the toyotas they've been in this whole time.

    • @jacobl5488
      @jacobl5488 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @D Richardson Perhaps you're underpaid. You don't need a surgical specialty to hit 300k. You're only 6 years out so you're not too old, which is why I'm not sure where you get the mentality that DOs can't get surgical specialties. Perhaps you're in a state where there aren't many DOs but the ones I've been to, there are many surgical DOs. I'm first year out, nonsurgical and I'm above that mark.

    My wife graduated from PA school in 2017 with about $120k in debt, but we already had our plan to aggressively tackle that debt, and only borrowed the minimum to pay for tuition (I took care of the rest of our bills via my job). Now, she's 3 years into her practice as an orthopedic PA, and despite having a household income over $200k, we still drive our well-used but well-maintained 2007 cars, and pretty much throw every extra dollar towards her student loans and our modest mortgage. Friends and family think we're kinda weird for living like we make far less income, but I borrow from Dave and reply that we appear "weird" because in the US, being up to your neck in debt is considered normal, if not good, and I really have no interest in being "normal" by that measuring stick.

    Ramsey is exactly correct here regarding her husband. He is a "broke doctor."
    There is however a much deeper lesson Ramsey is teaching here regarding intellect. Intellect is not wisdom. Her fiance doesn't have it as Ramsey is eluding to, and even expresses regarding many intellectuals generally. She better take his advice, otherwise that marriage may be short lived. Her fiance must change or that will be a huge problem later on in their marriage.
    I'm actually reading a book about this called "Intellectuals and Society" by Thomas Sowell that explores this fascinating topic. I'll end with just one quote from book that highlights what Ramsey is saying here:
    "Intellect is not wisdom. There can be “unwise intellect,” as Thomas Carlyle characterized the thinking of Harriet Taylor, the friend and later wife of John Stuart Mill. Sheer brainpower-intellect, the capacity to grasp and manipulate complex concepts and ideas-can be put at the service of concepts and ideas that lead to mistaken conclusions and unwise actions, in light of all the factors involved, including factors left out of some of the ingenious constructions of the intellect." Thomas Sowell

      @@isaachaze1 There is nothing scammy.. people just have not heard of it because we are a smaller group within the physician/medical community. There are about 30 of DO medical schools compared to 100+ MD medical schools. But we are everywhere, and many people don't even realize they are being treated by a D.O. There is not much distinction left between MD and DO's nowadays with the recent merging of our two training organizations.

    It will be a minimum of 3 years post medical school before he starts making some real money. Then you can expect another 3-5 years to really pay off the debt itself. If they both get after it, they will be just fine. If he wants to start living a “doctors lifestyle” as if he’s making $250K a year right away, they are sunk.

      @Sir We Are About to Die Then you should stick to celibacy or paying prostitutes.
      You don't have to be a simp to be in a long-term relationship or get married. But you do need to respect your woman in the same way you'd respect a business partner or valued employee.
      Otherwise, there's no trust, no commitment, no growth, no co-dependence and you actually are vulnerable being cheated on, lied to, or milked of your assets and will to live.
