In the textbook that I'm using there is a note that says that there was a buddhist law that prohibited the consummtion of land animals with four legs and so in order for them to continue eating meat they just regarded rabbits as birds. So I guess that's why -羽 is still used for counting rabbits.

ウサギの数方法はhunting関係があります.昔は日本人は全ての食べる動物同じように数えましたと思う。(not 100% sure if that is correct as I cannot find any confirmation of this story on the internet, my 日本人 Professor at 九州大学told me this story).

5年前に家族と一緒に夏休みのとき日本に行くことにして、娘はユーチューブでその島について動画を見て、行くといいなと言っていました。広島に住んでいる友達に運転してもらって、兎の島に観光できました。素晴らしい一日を過ごしました。更に、近くにある他の島もとても綺麗です。行く可能性があるなら、本当におすすめです。（間違い許してください）
