I don't know if you have seen any of the TV series 'Downton Abbey' that was popular a few years ago. In this show there were a lot of people described as 'servants'. They did menial jobs for the upper classes, but they weren't slaves. They could go and find a job somewhere else if they wanted. In modern English the word 'servant' makes us think of someone like this, a low paid worker who does menial labour. But that is very different from a slave and very different from the meaning of the Greek word doulos. So 'servant' should be avoided in modern English translations of this word. We Christians are nothing less than the slaves of God and Christ. It's a shocking image, and I think it's meant to be a bit shocking.

Does this obedience include the elders in the church? What if the elders correct something that is grey area and not in the bible and you have a different opinion or perspective on it? Do you blindly submit to them because you are submitting to God by submitting to them even if you don't agree ?
time to find a new church if they don't understand that matters that are not of foundational salvation issues, we are free to have different opinions on and don't need to be forced on others.

Slavery was built into Hebrew culture too in the OT. God even had rules about it all.
