teach us to be obedient Lord not through the power of our flesh which is weak but through the power of your spirit which can triumph over anything

Every Christian is a slave of Christ. This is a major New Testament theme that is often missed by modern English-speaking Christians, because translators translate as 'servant' instead of 'slave'.

The new Legacy Standard Bible translates this correctly.

Seems like you’re grasping for straws. I don’t think “slave” or “servant” had any different meaning in the first century Roman Empire knowing how slavery was common.

@@freethinker424 You're missing the point. The issue is what English words mean today and how translating with 'servant' is very misleading.
In the Greek New Testament, the Greek noun doulos is commonly used when referring to the relationship of Christians to Christ. In the first century, this was the standard Greek noun for a slave, a person considered to be the legal property of someone else.
Therefore, to get the right meaning of this in modern English, we need to translate as 'slave'. In modern English a 'servant' is not usually considered the legal property of someone else, so it is a very poor translation of doulos.
I don't know if you have seen any of the TV series 'Downton Abbey' that was popular a few years ago. In this show there were a lot of people described as 'servants'. They did menial jobs for the upper classes, but they weren't slaves. They could go and find a job somewhere else if they wanted.
In modern English the word 'servant' makes us think of someone like this, a low paid worker who does menial labour. But that is very different from a slave and very different from the meaning of the Greek word doulos. So 'servant' should be avoided in modern English translations of this word.
We Christians are nothing less than the slaves of God and Christ. It's a shocking image, and I think it's meant to be a bit shocking.

I bind to hell anyone being a slave to another who is not one's master in the flesh while binding one to a sincerity to obey one's master in the flesh in my life, the lives of my family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, acquintances, opponents and the body of Christ, binding to hell every unequal yoke and common share with those not being one's master in the flesh, in accordance with this word and ephesians 6:5-9, 2 corinthians 6:14-18 in the name and blood of Jesus Christ, amen and hallelujah!

"Let All Earthly Obedience Be Obedience to Christ"
King Sir (Sorry for the extremely long "comment". But I do believe it NEEDS to be espoused)...The book of Ephesians, chapter *6* ...
*5* Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; *6* Not with eye-service, as men-pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; *7* With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: *8* Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. *9* And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.
    Now in...
    Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Ecclesiastes 7:20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
    Thus...
No matter what Paul espoused about being righteous; satan inspires EVERY one to sin; ALL the time. Sad, but OH so True. And all of us do it sadly! And this is why mankind, from Creation to death, has experienced "tears, sorrows, pains and death". Believe it or not.
Proving...we ALL are sinners ALL the time, from birth to death; BUT if we believe IN Jesus; He will forgive EVERY sin, except for one..."The UN-Forgivable Sin!"
Mark 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, even blasphemies howsoever they shall blaspheme: Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit has never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation (hell).
And then on "Judgment Day"...Revelation 21:4 And God (who IS Jesus) shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away...
...In any case kind Sir and Brethren, Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. AMEN!

Great eork, it is such a shame some men use this reference to convince women are their slaves and the man is the master. May God guide our mind, spirit, soul and flesh in the right direction. That we shall do the works of the most high God as intended

Slavery was built into Hebrew culture too in the OT. God even had rules about it all.

Does this obedience include the elders in the church? What if the elders correct something that is grey area and not in the bible and you have a different opinion or perspective on it? Do you blindly submit to them because you are submitting to God by submitting to them even if you don't agree ?

time to find a new church if they don't understand that matters that are not of foundational salvation issues, we are free to have different opinions on and don't need to be forced on others.
