Synopsis | The Hidden Killer (2010)
Think about what you've eaten today. If you've strayed too far from the dietary straight and narrow, there's a fair chance you've consumed something called Trans Fat. Trans Fat is every bit as nasty as it sounds. It's a toxic, man-made chemical used to increase the shelf life of food.
As far as fats go, it's the worst of the worst. It's been banned elsewhere in the world, but here in Australia it's in everything from fried food to biscuits, clogging our arteries and contributing to appalling level of heart disease. The question is - why is something so bad for us still on the menu?

I live in Canada. In both Canada and the US there are many foods with trans fats. The labels indicate the amount of trans fats, but the majority of people have no idea about them. Many types of the commercially produced foods contain too much trans fats. Food companies use trans fats to lengthen shelf life of the food products. In my family we avoid foods containing trans fats. We buy fresh vegetables and non processed meats. We try to buy organic foods when possible. We do all our own food preparations.
I found out the government will not outlaw trans fats because they support the food manufactures to have longer lasting shelf life of foods. Longer shelf life is more profitable for the food manufactures.

Cool Whip, Crisco, processed food that lists partially hydrogenated oil (of any kind) as an ingredient is one of the first ways to start avoiding it. They can still disguise it by changing the name or adding another ingredient to it so they don't have to call it hydrogenated. To say the least I avoid anything that says partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated at least that's a start.

3 things to note.... 1. the word transfat is too taboo to use now, food labelling calls it "hydrogenated oil". 2. Food that has. 0.5gram per serving can be rounded off to 0% transfat. So when a product says ZERO transfat, most probably it has some. 3. Reheating cooked food in the box or overnight takeaways also turns those vegetable oils into transfat. Vegetable oils are unstaturated fat with loose chemical bonds.
