    Hi Gary,
    a few weeks ago I found your videos about your sailingboats. GREAT !!!! I love the way you are building your boats and the way you present and comment your videos.
    Actually I do a restauration at a sailing-bota called INGA IV which is about 45 years old. As a young boy I had not the money for this boat. 4 weeks ago I bought a secondhand INGA.
    Thanks for your tip to make the plankinglines with a ballpointpen, it works and look great.
    Hope you are well and you will have lots of fun with sailing your boats.
    greetings from Germany, Michael :-)

      Eben genauso gedacht ..., hatte bei meinem Modell noch die Plankinglines geritzt und dann mit schwarzem Nähgarn ausgelegt und mit Mattlack fixiert. War ziemlicher Aufwand. Ein Unterschied in der Optik zu einfachem Kugelschreiber nicht feststellbar.
      Warum kommt man nicht selbst auf solche praktische Lösungen ? 🤷‍♂

    Are you going to be doing other videos for this boat? Is this made from “door skin “ as well? I can’t get it at the box stores around my area.

    • @sailtails2775
      @sailtails2775 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do intend to make more videos about this boat. 'Door Skin' yes, though 'Flyer' is actually made of 1/8" Pine plywood which I just happened to find locally (Mexico). Almost any plywood could be used for these boats if not more than 1/8" (3 mm) thick. Check with cabinet makers in your area if the stores don't have it.

  • @LaurieBurrow
    @LaurieBurrow ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Gary, I'm part way through building 'Flyer' - the plans are great. Looking at your video I think I see that you have put a glass fibre skin on the inside of the hull. Your instructions don't mention that - is it for extra strength or a good finish? Many Thanks

    • @sailtails2775
      @sailtails2775 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for asking about this. Sorry about the confusion. Although it appears to be fiberglass cloth, it is not. The plywood I used had an embossed surface on its back side which gives it that appearance. This is not a feature I chose, it just happened to be that way on this inexpensive plywood which was found at my local Home Depot store. The only place I used fiberglass on Flyer is the inner surfaces of the fin trunk and the outside of the rudder. All the remainder of the boat is sealed with clear penetrating epoxy sealer then painted / varnished with brushed on oil based products.

  • @martinmeasures829

    Gary, just before you fix the two side of the fin housing together I noticed there is an area that looks as though there is no epoxy, it's a strip corresponding to where you will glue and fix the sides, can you explain how and why that is please? Do you use a specific grade of glass and how many layers please? Sorry so many questions its just that I want my build to be perfect, just like yours.
    Martin 😀

    • @sailtails2775
      @sailtails2775 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sides are glassed over completely. The strip you see is where I have roughed up the surface with 100 grit sandpaper to improve adhesion when epoxy gluing the trunk together.
      I use just one layer of glass. It is fairly lightweight, actual weight unknown.
      It was the only glass to be found here in Ensenada Mexico and the merchant was unable to tell me the weight.
      The weight is not critical for we are just using it to create a waterproof layer and not for structural strength.
      Happy boat building Martin, just sent schooner 'Annie' plans your way.

    • @sailtails2775
      @sailtails2775 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem Roger, 'P' excused. There is room for imagination when it comes to the scale of any of the Bearospace boats.
      I like to think of 'Annie' at a scale of 1:12 which would make her a 58 foot (18 meter) boat. At that scale, deck planking could be about 1/4" - 5/16" (6 - 8 mm) wide.

      5 Minute Epoxy. Note that the fiberglass is set in epoxy resin, and the surfaces to be glued with epoxy are first sanded lightly to enhance adhesion.

      Hi Robert,
      I dab the epoxy in place with a stick or a screwdriver, then trowel it out smoothly with a "tool" which is simply a scrap of thin plywood sized and shaped (rounded end) to give the desired radius to the fillet. You will want to make several "tools" with different radius ends to fit the various angles inside the hull.
