- In this episode, Siskel and Ebert review: The Last Boy Scout, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Convicts, Hook and The Double Life of Veronique.
I saw _Hook_ as an older teen, and it struck a chord with me because ultimately it is a farewell to childhood, a story of lost physical youth reclaimed as a mindset. As I was transitioning from child to adult, I could relate to that. But rewatching it years later, I didn't identify with it nearly as well, nor did I enjoy it.
The film boasted a huge set and a record number of stunt actors, but it still somehow manages to look and feel small. It feels and looks like a big-budget stage play. Maybe that was intentional, given Peter Pan's history, but I think it is another thing that hurts the film, robbing Never Never Land of its potential magic.
"The plot is basically Lethal Weapon". Well they were both written by Shane Black.
but it's the same thing, and that's acceptable? for someone to do the same thing over and over? if so, that's cool, I guess, but it isn't for me. for someone so supposedly out-there as Shane Black, he did seem to be repeating himself, there.
What a take on Hook
Shane Black is a one trick pony.
@@mowm88 it sucks is why .
@@jimmckee771 this movie was heavily re-written, according to Black.
I was 11 or 12 when Hook came out and I loved it.
same here, they even showed it in our school when it came out
I still love "Hook". Its one of my favorite Peter Pan adaptations, second only to the 1953 Disney classic. Both are in my Blu-Ray collection, and I watch them on a fairly regular basis.
I was about that age when I saw it on VHS. Captivated me and was one of my fav movies growing up. I think part of it's appeal is the adults and kids in the movie learn to see life through each other's eyes. Peter learns to be a kid again, and his kids gain a new appreciation for their dad.
I saw it twice because I liked it and was afraid it wouldn't look good on TV.
Yeah, I did too. It's ok. I'm not sure Peter Pan could ever be done well in live action.
I like The Last Boy Scout. I have it on DVD.
My condolences.
Probably my favourite Bruce Willis character
I think I saw it on cable several times.
The stripper isn't killed by a car bomb; Willis's two-timing friend is.
House bomb?
I used to like Hook when I was younger, but seeing it now I definitely agree with Roger.
No. Just no.
Way too many pirates... way too many Lost boys... Ebert is completely correct about Neverland... get rid of the roller coaster and the skateboarding.... should be something way more organic , like they lived amongst nature🌳🌴🌴🌳🌴
I don't know why Roger said Star Trek I and III were bad. He gave positive reviews to both.
Yeah, makes no sense.
Bad memories from part 5 maybe
Both of them are very inconsistent. Mostly because they forget easily. They even mess up important plot points immediately after having seen a movie. They arent nerds. They're normal guys trying to pass as intellectuals.
@@Shorty_Lickens I noticed that they got the details wrong for the films they had a moderate interest in.
The Search for Spock was bad?? Since when??
Last Boy Scout was great "entertainment", prob, most underrated Bruce Willis film. It got very "mixed" reviews at the time, but for me this film gets better with age, not worse. I think the storyline was actually more original than Roger gives it credit for and the dialogue was witty and funny. Nobody is ever going to compare Bruce Willis to Daniel Day-Lewis but the guy was a great action star, kind of "McQueenesque", but in a more "approachable", wiseass fashion. Willis had his own way of approaching the "fourth wall" without ever completely breaking it.
The Last Boy Scout couldve easily been rewritten as a Die Hard movie.
“The Last Boy Scout” (1991)

I think Thumbs Up & Down is fair for The Last Boy Scout
The Last Boy Scout was pretty awesome. Hook was boring! I thought it was boring as a child and as an adult it's still boring.
The Last Boy Scout 👍🌟🌟🌟
Star Trek 6 👍🌟🌟🌟
Convicts 👎🌟🌟
Hook 👎🌟🌟
Life of Veronique 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟
It wouldn't be a Bruce Willis movie without a car in a swimming pool exploding
The Undiscovered Country is a Star Trek classic.
"What is it with you anyway?"
"Do you still think we're finished?"
"More than ever."
Hook is like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in that both films are bad, but still pretty watchable. For Hook, the highlights are any scene between Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins who played Hook and Smee as if they were an old gay couple.
No. Just no.
Lol I like that analogy. Iago and Jafar type of vibe
The Last Boy Scout was best movie from this episode,.
No. Just no.
Rufio was hella cool though
BTW, I like that Lucas Haas was in that little forgettable movie, and yet he was recently in "Babylon." Which I didn't like, but at least he is still acting
there's a lot of unintentional humor in the last boy scout too
Siskel: "Spielberg has been making some duds lately. He needs a hit. "
Spielberg: "Hold my beer Sisky"
(2 years later: Jurassic Park, Schindlers List, Oscar, Oscar Oscar🎶)
that conversation never happenend?
You don't have the preview parts on here?
Walt Disney Cartoon Classics (VHS) Advertisements in 1991?!
“Trekkers”? Literally never heard that before. Always thought it was Trekkies. Perhaps that’s because I’m a TNG guy. Anyone have any insight on this?
A significant amount of fans considered Trekkie an insult. And chose Trekker as a more dignified term.
You're a star trek guy and the trekkie/trekker debate is brand new to you?
The Double Life of Veronique is a masterpiece. First saw it on Channel Four in the UK
From the trash that’s put out now; Hook definitely became a classic, over time. 🎞
It hasn’t. People who were kids at the time are nostalgic, that’s all.

No Hook is a great classic movie for kids and adults. Critics were wrong then. Spielberg was wrong then. There is true magic here. John Williams music here is some of the best music ever created. Siskel and Ebert didn’t even mention him. His music is a main character in the movie. Robin, Dustin, Bob, Julia, Maggie and everyone else all knock it out the park. The only mistake here is Spielberg allowing a play set designer design the never land sets. A main complaint by so many. Even though, the sets still work. Magic Movie
I heard a better criticism of the film than what these two offered. Like how long should it take to show he's a bad father? Also, it's said they (Spielberg and Williams) were going to make it a musical but chickened out. They should have released two versions, one musical, one not and let the critics and public decide which they liked better instead of so many people saying they didn't like it.
Even as an 11 year old watching Hook in the theater, I hated it. Boring af.
Are you, Siskel and Ebert out of your mind?
Agreed. We watched at skl yr 7 at Christmas I was Bored SHITLESS. The teachers and other kids were making oit it was some Great WOW film. Hated it.
You were too old at that point. U missed it by a year or 2. I was 9 when I saw it and have LOVED it ever since.
Just wait until the new Peter Pan movie comes out, you'll think HOOK is a masterpiece
It’s strange to me that Gene thought that what was missing from Hook, was music. The music was constant; it was as though it was dictating the emotional experience the viewer is supposed to have, -the constant adventure music ruined it for me. I love the concept of the story of the Peter Pan stories being revealed as true & never-ever land a real place, & his going the wrong ways in life & then learning he’s always been Peter Pan. And it is one of the few movies where Dustin Hoffman’s stuck-up over-classy acting works well(he didn’t make me feel sick once in this). The lighting was beautiful. It was too violent.
He didn’t mean musical score - he meant more SONGS like in a musical.
Hook was dreadful
It’s a loaded cast
Great Director
Surprisingly lacking Fun and Wonder
Spielberg shoehorns in a bunch of sap
These 2 definitely missed the mark on hook….
They also gave Home alone 2 thumbs down
Gene has no shame. Mistrekering "Trekers".
I truly disliked Hook..It seems Steven Spielberg didn’t learn anything from his movie 1941! Hook was an utter mess. Over Produced, Over Directed, Over Acted ..and even with the help of a Very Good Script Doctor..Carrie Fisher could not save Hook. Sets that were Sets! It all looked Fake! Hook was Suppose to be Spielberg’s first Musical..With Music by John Williams and Lyrics by Leslie Bruccusse and They had written songs to Hook. But Steven Spielberg Chicken Out at the Last Moment, Killing Hook The Musical to Hook The Bloated Fake Movie!
Julia Roberts was having drug problems and Boyfriend Problems Kiefer Sutherland at the time..Spielberg had problems with Julia Roberts showing up on time to do her scenes..Spielberg hated directing Julia Roberts..and told her if she didn’t show up on the set..he would Fire Julia!
Kevin Kline was The Original Grown Up Peter Pan, But could not do the film..I bet he was excited and grateful ..Kline had to do Reshots on Soap Dish..Preventing him to show up on Hook..Enter Robin Williams..another miscast decision..along with miscasting Julia Roberts as Tinkerhell! Not once did I or Audiences that Older Peter Pan Played by Robin Williams was remotely Believable! Robin Williams was only One Note and Truly Painful to Watch.
Steven Spielberg has said recently that he was truly unhappy about Hook. Spielberg said all the kids on the set, including their guardians and parents were unruly! Not a well behaved set at all. When I saw Hook many moons ago..Now mind you..this is the same Director ..who made one of the Best Films ever …E.T. Which was truly remarkable and Magical…Hook was Not that. It was Way too long..Bad Sets that looked like..Sets. Uninspiring, Flat, Loud, Boring! Spielberg and his editor Michael Kahn should of Cut at least 40 Plus Minutes out Hook.
Mr. Smith From Lost in Space watched Hook and said ..”Oh The Pain”
John Williams Music is just OK..There are some Magical Cues..but even John Williams couldn’t get this Spielberg Turkey to Take Flight!
I think Kline would have been a better casting choice.
Star trek 1 and 3 were bad
.. oh ebert. You silly man.
Trekkers lol…isn’t it Trekkies?!?
I LIKE TREKKIE
