Lichtenstein: A mini-Switzerland whose people are even more "Swiss" than the Swiss! Also, their name is a great way for people learning the German language to learn to pronounce German letter combinations.
I've never heard of or been to Lichtenstein but I had a very strange dream about it and naturally did some research on it. So far found out it is so much like my own country (New Zealand) both the friendly people wise and mountainous landscape wise I think I will loove it! I imagine it's probably a great place to live. Our population is a bit higher though at 5 million and economically they are probably richer. The extra soldier they befriended story is so cute, that's how it should be, make friends not war! Need to visit this cool place once covid is over.
In recent times, Liechtenstein had a one-man army. I seem to remember that the Liechtenstein army was disbanded when its only soldiert died in 1974 or '75.
Interesting facts about Lichtenstein. 1: the number of companies with their official headquarters in the country outnumber the population around 5 to 3. 2: you could fit the entire population into Wembley stadium in London 3 times over and still have spare seats!
@@oppi263 it's usually the "Parent Company" that no-one ever heard about that's registered in tax havens. Even if there are no "notable" firms, it's still gives Lichtenstein one of the highest per capita GDP"s in the world!
Just a note for the editors. The invasion of North Africa in 1942 had no effect on Germany's oil supplies as no oil exploration had occurred there yet and no oil fields had been developed. The Germans didn't have access to the only Middle Eastern fields in Iraq. There was a minor conflict with a pro-Axis Iraqi government in 1940 - 1941 which ended when the Brits defeated them and deposed the Vichy French in Syria and Lebanon. Germany's main foreign oil supply was in Romania, which is why the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia, the eastern provinces of Romania, contrary to the Soviet-German 1939 pact of alliance (which started WWII) caused great alarm in Berlin and led directly to: 1) the German invasion of the Balkan countries, and 2) the invasion of the Soviet Union by Operation Barbarossa. Interesting little program on a very obscure side issue of WWII. My understanding is that the Swiss military was planning their main defense, then and now, to be in the Oberland (or high country), which would have meant mounting some kind of military defense in Lechtenstein. The Swiss and Liechtensteiners are either very close lipped about their defense agreements and arrangements, or claim complete ignorance by my personal observations.
The Bank of International Settlements (BIS) is seen as the central bank of all national central banks. During the Second World War, Germany continued to maintain international trade contacts and to make international payments and transactions. That's what the BIS did, based in Basel, Switzerland since 1919. Nazi Germany therefore had no choice. The occupation of Switzerland would have meant that Germany could no longer do international trade. So they avoided to occupy Switzerland in order to keep trading with the rest of the world. Yhat is what the BIS still does. Almost nobody knows, but this bank plays a major role in determining world power structures, without being checked by any authority. Scary, right?
Wow, I learned so much from this video on Liechtenstein! It's amazing how such a small country has such a rich and complex history. If you're interested in learning more about Liechtenstein, I highly recommend the book 'A Journey Through Liechtenstein's Fascinating History' by Lea Marie Nigg. It's a beautiful and informative book that offers a unique perspective on Liechtenstein's history.
This video is like a college paper with a minimum page requirement. I count 11 separate times the same idea was reiterated. But I didn't watch the whole video so there could be more. I can't take anymore of this History Channel repetitiveness.
One little known storey of the 2WW,was that the Swiss had a policy of attacking the high command of an attacking Nation.A policy called decapitaion. Hitler was told that the German high command could not be protected from Special Force teams .from Switzerland.
Switzerland and Liechtenstein made a landexchange after WW2... In order to protect the swiss borders and the reduit, Switzerland needed a strategically important piece of land that was then part of Liechtenstein...
Today Lichtenstein is protected by the Swiss Armed Forces, so that they even today don't have an Army by them selves. Greetings from Switzerland, great Video.
The Anschluss of Austria was for the most part voluntary and not really an annexation. The Austrian people voted to join Germany with an almost 99% approval rating. German Soldiers simply entered Austria in order to restore order and faith.
Well the Vote wasn‘t really democratic, as I think anyone can imagine a vote in Nazi-Germany. However you are right, there was no opposition from Austria when being „invaded“, far-rights were in Power in Austria too. Also Anschluss had been a demand of Austria since the end of WW1 as they had gone from a huge empire to this little country that couldn‘t really sustain itself.
Uh huh... So that is why they killed the Austrian leader? Austrian Nazis continued terrorist attacks against Austrian governmental institutions, causing a death toll of more than 800 between 1934 and 1938. Germany wanted Austria's minerals and other assets as Hitler needed them to begin his Lebensraum (room- to-grow policy.) What an odd narrative you have.
The Alliance between Liechtenstein 🇱🇮 and Switzerland 🇨🇭 included: Postal Services,Police, monetary union,Border Control and Correctional Service’s. Train Services provided by Austrian National Railways. In our days that changed a bit.
Number one: Dont use symbols and clothes and names and flags etc that are illegal in Germany. Number two: Dont show anything illegal. Number three: Make your video a ten minutes video.
Austria did not acquiesce, its highly revered prime minister, Englebert Dalfus, was onerously murdered (his throat was slit by Hitler's stooges), and Hitler forcibly invaded bankrupt and starving (from WW1), Austria.
I've always questioned of the war of 1812, I think it would be really interesting to find out what really happened, and I fricking love these videos, they help out a lot. Thanks! Edit : I know the British won. as the reasons aml2000 and David Renwick said, i just didn't want to cause a fight. And Coffee Succubus Canadians are barely ever Redcoats. That is the national guard, as i made this comment to enforce my knowledge on the war. I was planning to make an alternate history of the war but needed information, and i'm very happy that you guys put your research to tell me who won and help me learn more about the war, I just need a little bit more information on the war summary. And have a great day/night or what ever time it is in your timezone everyone!
Unless you want us Americans fighting with Redcoats about who won, or Canadians claiming they won because supposedly they burnt the white House and think that's a win, then by all means.
Coffee Succubus You said the reason yourself, no one won the war, USA won the war, or Britain & Canada won, we don’t know. I’m also using it to help me out with history before the 1870’s.
The simplest way to determine who wins a war is this: If a nation starts a war, it wins if it achieves its primary goals. If a nation didn't start a war, it wins if it keeps the agressor from achieving its primary goals. The US started the war of 1812. It gave as reasons that Britain was impressing US sailors, and blockading France. However its primary goal was to conquer Canada and make it part of the US. The Brits agreed to stop impressing sailors before the war started. The US went ahead anyway, and tried to invade Canada in three different places, and failed miserably. The rest of the war was essentially a stalemate, since Britain was tied up in Europe fighting Napoleon. After he was sent to Elba, the Brits starting invading the coast of the US in various places in order to get the US to the negotiating table. They were finally successful in that and the US and Britain agree to put things back the way they used to be and act like the war never happened. The Battle of New Orleans happened after the treaty was signed but before notice got back to America. The battle had no effect on the outcome of the war. It enabled the US to save face and claim they won the war though.
From Austria, Liechtenstein can only be reached via a mountain pass, so you have to take Lichtenstein from Switzerland. Switzerland was spared, however, and so was the insignificant Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein got word that the Nazis were coming and went on holiday, leaving the keys under the mat with a note requesting of the Wehrmacht not to let the cat out.

I know I shouldn't laugh but that's hilarious
He’s a badass
I have been to Liechtenstein, it's a beautiful country.
Lol..you mean , you parked your car , fender end was in Austria, bumper in Switzerland, and you opened your door in Liechtenstein.
Nice view.
Interesting facts about Lichtenstein.
1: the number of companies with their official headquarters in the country outnumber the population around 5 to 3.
2: you could fit the entire population into Wembley stadium in London 3 times over and still have spare seats!
Not many notable firms
Germany's main foreign oil supply was in Romania, which is why the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia, the eastern provinces of Romania, contrary to the Soviet-German 1939 pact of alliance (which started WWII) caused great alarm in Berlin and led directly to:
1) the German invasion of the Balkan countries, and
2) the invasion of the Soviet Union by Operation Barbarossa.
I have been wanting to know exactly what this video talked about for a long time

AVGN reference!
If you're interested in learning more about Liechtenstein, I highly recommend the book
'A Journey Through Liechtenstein's Fascinating History' by Lea Marie Nigg.
It's a beautiful and informative book that offers a unique perspective on Liechtenstein's history.
The fabled country, the pattern for the film “Mouse that Roared.”
The 81st friend wasn’t really a friend but a military officer from Austria who can as a liaison and probably left shortly after
This video is like a college paper with a minimum page requirement. I count 11 separate times the same idea was reiterated. But I didn't watch the whole video so there could be more. I can't take anymore of this History Channel repetitiveness.
Gotta reach that 10 minute mark
right there with you.... content be damned, gotta hit that mark.
At the beginning of WWII, the Swiss posted troops in Liechtenstein. My father was posted there in the first week of the war.
Commander: Damage report! How many losses!
Soldier: -1 sir!
Commander: come again?
Soldier: -1 sir. Tom made a friend
Friend: hi! Im Jerry.
I have asked myself this question at least 6 times a day for the last 20 years and now I know. thanks. a lot.
Somehow, I thought they did it by changing all of the street signs so that armies didn't even know they were there.
They rest of the world has always wanted to know this intriguing historical question and story. Now they have

Seriously, Liechtensten is beautiful. Small, but just as scenic as Switzerland.
One little known storey of the 2WW,was that the Swiss had a policy of attacking the high command of an attacking Nation.A policy called decapitaion. Hitler was told that the German high command could not be protected from Special Force teams .from Switzerland.
First time I heard of this. Sounds like bullshit to me. If it isn't, kindly tell us what we need to look up to learn more about this.
Wtf is this shit
Are you mad? Read more on history.
@@countdooku8405 - He is not mad. Are you a fool?
Uh huh... So that is why they killed the Austrian leader? Austrian Nazis continued terrorist attacks against Austrian governmental institutions, causing a death toll of more than 800 between 1934 and 1938. Germany wanted Austria's minerals and other assets as Hitler needed them to begin his Lebensraum (room- to-grow policy.)
What an odd narrative you have.
Considering that Engelbert Dollfuss was assassinated it was never voluntary.
Liechtenstein is basically little Switzerland.
@Reku Wo wohnsch?
I like those guys texting at 1:45.
My god, the invasion of Liechtenstein would have taken, what, a full company of soldiers out the the Barbarossa order of battle. Madness.
Liechtenstein was defended by Switzerland and thus, with the "National Reduit" also heavily fortified.
Is a movie with malkolm McDowell Vend dest and its about Lichtenstein in WW2 . Good movie
May I know where you aquired the terrain map?
No

*How to avoid demonatization*
Number one: Dont use symbols and clothes and names and flags etc that are illegal in Germany.
Number two: Dont show anything illegal.
Number three: Make your video a ten minutes video.
@Fox 1 good one 👍
Austria did not acquiesce, its highly revered prime minister, Englebert Dalfus, was onerously murdered (his throat was slit by Hitler's stooges), and Hitler forcibly invaded bankrupt and starving (from WW1), Austria.

You forgot to mention that Liechtenstein annexed Switzerland in ww3
That's THE question that everyone need to answer. Thanks.
What Happened? The Knight of Liechtenstein went jousting and became a Knight of England.
Fascinating.
In actuality, the War of 1812 was not won by the US, Canada, or Britain. It was won by a tornado.
paul warren lol so true
The simplest way to determine who wins a war is this:
If a nation starts a war, it wins if it achieves its primary goals.
The fact to ruin your day: The extra friend they made along the way was an Italian officer guiding them back
Who would win, Switzerland or the combined forces of Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican?
CHE - no sweat (and before breakfast.)
From Austria, Liechtenstein can only be reached via a mountain pass, so you have to take Lichtenstein from Switzerland. Switzerland was spared, however, and so was the insignificant Liechtenstein
Germany didn‘t annex Austria 😂😂😂 They joined willingly to the 3rd Reich. People were even pretty happy back then.
That's still annexation.
It’s still annexation
Um, texas was annexed the same way
So voting to join is called annexation? Aha okay
@@linglingstar yes. they voted to be annexed. annexation is not nessecarily a negative thing.
This is good. Good stuff here.
Thank you for calling the USSR the Soviet Union and not Russia.

It was occupied.
Liechtenstein got word that the Nazis were coming and went on holiday, leaving the keys under the mat with a note requesting of the Wehrmacht not to let the cat out.
If Germany managed to defeat Britain, they would have no doubt turned their attention to both Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
@Großösterreichisches Reich It's much more likely that the British would fall before the USSR.
Lets not forget that Switzerland also buried explosives all around the Alps and had informed the Germans that they would have the worlds first army of snowmen if they did anything stupid..
