    WE LEGIT BROUGHT UP THE SAME THINGS!!!! TWINNNING!!!!!!!!!!!
    50%, Minutiae (however you spell it), the other 20 seasons that she built and ain't tell us about, characters coming in dreams, Her hierarchy, dealing with harassment!
    I just love it! We both talked about these things! LOL I cant wait til we do the live.
    I totally called you excitement when you watched the next video and found out she talked about the same mountain. Gosh, this was great to watch. Kilkayo Peak is gonna be your best work yet, claiming it already LOL

      OMG LOL!! Why am I not surprised hahaha!!! TWINNING!!! I can't wait to see your video!!!! I'm just going to keep texting you for percentage updates hahahaha!!!

    OMG I feel your point about being intimidated on how many new things to name vs. what from "our world" you could take and expand on and AHHHH. The fact that she had so many seasons that she still didn't include in the index at the end BLEW MY MIND.
    (Also I'm only a little scared since I felt like I had a quarter-life crisis at 23. AM I GOING TO HAVE ONE AT 30 TOO, NOOOOOOOO. Bahahah. I loved how much she laughed at herself / with the audience throughout this course.)
    I underlined the "if you suffer for your art, it doesn't mean your audience has to as well" too!!!! I wish I could send this to several other authors bahaha.
    THE BEHIND THE SCENES SKETCH OF ALL YOUR NOTES AND CLOTHES AND MAGIC SYSTEMS AND WORLD AND AHHHHHH. Once the story is published, can you please just do a walk-through of your notes?! Bahahaha.
    It's so fun hearing how we both came out of the class feeling MORE confident in what we'd already done but also felt a clear roadmap on how to improve things. That's such a wonderful example of what a great instructor N.K. Jemisin is!!!!
    (From a video standpoint, I loooooved how many extra visuals you included! From the Mount St. Helen's to the chamber pots bahah. And you gushing about how serendipitous it was that she used Mount St. Helen's as an example after you'd talked about it made me so happy.)
    THANK YOU SO MUCH TO YOU AND SHAY FOR INCLUDING ME IN THIS, AHHH!

      Hahahaha! You'll probably be spared the "30" mid-life crisis as you totally have your stuff together!! You had yours early lol! And right?!! She made me feel so confident and excited to get going! I'm always afraid when I take classes I'll feel even more intimidated, but hers was the complete opposite. I felt so empowered after each class! And the Mt. Saint Helen's thing tripped me out lol! I was like... I was JUST talking about that hahaha!! I had that same moment when she mentioned the Gormenghast novels (I ended up editing it out) But when she brought it up my jaw dropped! I don't think I've ever heard of an author bring up Titus Groan before! It's one of my all-time favorites!! Mervyn Peake is a master as well! Gah! I loved doing this so much!!

    I'm loving this trilogy from you, Shay and Kate! Honestly I'm so mad at myself that I've not read anything from N.K. Jemisin yet! And that example of the swear words is so so interesting. Oh my gosh those minutes under the kitchen table must have been absolutely terrifying. I got my MSc in GeoHazards so I've studied the eruption and I can't even imagine being a child who didn't know what was going on

    • @BeccaCSmith
      @BeccaCSmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!!! And honestly anything she writes is brilliant so you could start with anything lol!! And that’s so cool you studied the eruption! I’ve always wanted to know more about it. It’s always just been a powerful memory that shaped a lot of my fears in life. It’s so crazy how a single event can affect us for the rest of our lives!

    This class sounds like something I need to add to my list. It's clear that you absolutely enjoyed it. You brought up a lot of interesting things.
    Plumbing for example. The Aztecs actually created a water system to irrigate water for various reasons including bathing.
    It's common for people (writer's, artists, etc.) to not think about the geography of their world when they make maps or when writing/creating. Some people don't think how rivers flow or how mountains are created. Knowing the tectonic plates (or whatever one calls them in their world) seems a bit much but I think it's useful to at least know some of them. I actually had to learn a lot about things like that when I got further into cartography.
    Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I'll definitely be looking into the class soon.

    • @BeccaCSmith
      @BeccaCSmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely worth it!! I loved every minute! And I totally agree, you definitely don't need to know crazy details of things like tectonic plates, but it is so much fun to think about. Just another layer to world building that makes me so excited!!

    God I definitely get into my head too much when writing. And 30 definitely sparked a crisis that I’m not sure I’m out of almost 8 years later lol

      Right?! Getting in my head holds me back sooooooo much!! This class definitely helped me with that!! And lol!! I really do think everyone has one at 30, and let's be honest, every decade mile marker hahaha!!!
