The trash, the chair , etc shows you how intense this rivalry is. One of the most intense and great ones in the country. If Utah would have won, we would not have heard any complaints. A win is a win. Go cougs
@@T1000_2that complaint was warranted it literally did not happen. at least the holding call was legit even if you don’t think it shouldn’t be called that late in the game
I thought the refs were more for Utah than BYU, if anything. I'm not a Utah or BYU fan, but it looked to me they were calling more against BYU than Utah.
i saw this comment on the highlight reel posted by espn and i couldn’t agree more For any of the people who think that the refs tipped the game in BYU's favor: 1. The replay showing the hold on 4th & 10 was about the most clear and obvious hold I've ever witnessed - but should it have just been a no-call since it was so far away from the ball? Absolutely NOT because that hold completely obstructed a key receiver from getting open on a game-defining play. ALSO, Jake mentioned in his post-game interview that he saw the hold because he looked left at that receiver first and saw he was being held / not open. What adds to the credibility even more is that the ref who threw the flag was the S line ref who was positioned in the end zone behind Jake and seeing down the field the exact view that Jake could see, which probably made it extra clear how much that hold prevented BYU from a fair look. 2. The refs called TONS of stuff against BYU the entire game. 3. The face mask call on BYU right before the half was a HUGE incorrect call in favor of Utah - it looked like a face mask at full speed, but the slowed down replay showed extremely clear angles of Glasker not touching the helmet even a little bit. That call was a 25 yard difference for Utah that easily could have made the drive not result in a TD. Lucky Utes. 4. BYU should have gotten the chance to kick a field goal before the half, but the refs called the 10-second run-off ending the half. On the review though, it showed the offsides flag being thrown with the clock at 12 seconds, which means BYU should have had the chance to kick with 2 seconds left. If utah wanted actually wanted to win they should have scored against the rattled and asleep byu defense in the second half. if they scored ANYTHING then it wouldn’t have been a problem Yes, BYU played sloppy and coaches made a ton of mistakes - but the refs made some critical errors that could have cost BYU the game.
Yes, the refs had a difficult time. It was a good holding call. You can see it. It was not a face mask; he was pulling the jersey. Bottom line: If you have to blame the refs, you didn't play a good game. BYU was very disorganized.
Utah thought they were going to run the table and win the conference title. Maybe if they work a little harder it might happen next year. Just a thought - the PAC 12 is looking - just go back!
@@virtualpenman seems like the right answer. All that money they got in the PAC 12 and they still cannot compete in the Big 12. I have think Utah has gone backwards, they are worse now than they were in the Mountain West
You’re delusional if you believe they are worse than they were in the MW, no other way to put it. They have bad chemistry this year and clearly are not as good as anticipated but saying they are worse now just because they are having a down year is laughable.
We really have to get away from using that word deserve - especially in the world of athletics. You don't deserve anything. It is what it is. You play and live with the consequences.
No matter what Utah fans may say, the holding call was legit (confirmed by replay). There's nothing else they can say. Unlike the bogus facemask call against BYU at the end of the first half (again, confirmed by replay) that kept them out of the endzone.
BYU was very lucky to win. But it had nothing to do with the refs. They were just lucky that a putrid performance on offense and defense didn't cost them a game against a bad team. Should be thanking their lucky stars for Keelan Marion and Will Ferrin for being great on special teams.
Refs were awful to both teams, BYU in the first half, both teams in the second, and Utah towards the end. But BYU pulled off another last minute comeback win, as they have several times this season. That seems to be what Jake Retzlaf does best. Go Cougs!!!
Hearing U of U AD & Ute fans complain about the referees reminded me of the 2003 Cubs in the NLCS. Anyone remember Steve Bartman? Bartman didn't lose the game for the Cubs when he reached out to catch the fly ball the Cubs outfielder was hoping to catch. But the Cubs did spiral after the incident. Allowing 8 more runs in that game to lose game 6. And losing game 7. Utah can make excuses and point at ghosts (& referees). Like Cubs and their fans did in the 2003 NLCS. But poor Mr. Bartman wasn't at fault, though he became their scape goat. BYU needs to continue to take the ups and the downs in stride. And with class. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bartman_incident The Steve Bartman incident th-cam.com/video/vq8G81oOHhY/w-d-xo.html
Missed in all of this talk about Utah is that Texas Tech Head Coach McGuire also spoke publicly after losing to Colorado about the BIG 12 officiating needing to be better and how it really hurt his team in key moments of their loss to Colorado. It really makes sense that the BIG 12 wants BYU and Colorado to be in the CCG. They want BYU to be unbeaten in the regular season and Colorado winning the CCG. Why? That's the path to get two teams into the playoffs. Don't be surprised when BYU complains about officiating in the CCG. It will be ironic. Colorado wins that game. College football has been destroyed by NIL, the portal and the happenings that are closing in on a P2 (SEC and BIG). It's all about money. And money corrupts. Look for more accusations of rigged games because the ACC and BIG 12 will do whatever they can to get two teams in the playoffs.
If they didn't before, they certainly did after that classless display by the athletic director, coach, and fans. Did you hear that the BYU cheerleading coach was knocked unconscious by a water bottle thrown at her head by a fan after the game? If this behavior continues, I hope there is serious consideration given to removing them from the conference. What an embarrassment to the state of Utah.
Note the last call of the game as time expired: "Un-Sportsman like conduct from the Utah bench". Whittingham should retire. Ute's tying up Y receivers all game long by holding their uniforms at the hips and shoulders. You can see several examples of Y receivers who couldn't lift their arm up because the Ute players was holding them at the wrist. Utah was lucky to not have been blown out. The only way the Y could catch balls was only when a Ute player wasn't near them. Utah should go back to the PattyCake12. I bet USC, Oregon and Washington receivers are glad to not be on the field being held every play by Utes. Dirtiest team in college football for several years.
My brother played football as an O-lineman for Coach Whitt's brother. Cary Whittingham had a saying of "Make [the refs] call it." I suspect his brother has the same philosophy.
I don't really care about the post-game politics but to put it simply Utah screwed up. They played the better game, they looked like the better team, and they shot themselves in the head. What that program needs to do frankly is play smarter. Whether the defensive holding call was correct or not, Utah should not be in press coverage on 4th and long. Press coverage requires the defender to directly meet the receiver. If you do that in 4th and long, nothing good is gonna happen.
