ive been a prepper for about 8 months now and its the best job ive ever had, its always busy and a lot of the things challenge me enough to keep me invested, jamming to music and laying some fine line tape sounds like money to me
Prep and finishing separate the pros from amateurs. Appreciate you emphasizing how important prep is, especially when client expectations are on the line. A+ content.
I always dreaded doing bumper covers also.! You sometimes don't know how they will react & what kind of junk they are coated with. ! Thanks for your cool videos. You help a lot of people improve their skills. !
I masked and prep semi trucks for a few years and from time to time the painter would let me paint. great line of work wouldn’t mind going back into that trade. You’re videos are a big motivation!
Just a tip .. when doing this, always spray with the tape ON TOP (in this case you would flip the bumper upside down) that way the air and paint are always going AWAY from the tape....
@@megaman4201 yeah, when I was learning to paint (20years ago) a guy I really respect in the custom paint game taught me that lesson. You basically want to esse any pressure put on the tape line (the force of air & gravity) he would say "why force up your tape and let your paint wick or run towards your clean side when you can let air and gravity keep the paint where it needs to be" and it makes a huge difference that most people never think of .. this guy was one of the best painters around and all his tips and tricks made me a sick painter myself...
Great tips again Brian. I love body work, but don’t have a dedicated area or booth to do as much as I’d like. So, my least fun with it all is setting up a temporary booth the having to take it back down. Focusing on just bodywork, I’d have to say sanding is the least fun. This is especially so on older cars with many layers of paint. One thing is for sure, when I need that motivational boost, I just watch one of your videos to make it happen!
Thank you for making these great videos. I've learned so much from watching them. I restore vintage Evinrude outboard motors from the 1950s. I always dread masking the cowling because it has three paint colors, and you have to mask it twice. Plus, there's a wait time of 48 hours between colors before you can put the next tape masking layer down. This means six days to complete the project, and it's the most nerve-racking part of the restore when you're pulling masking tape off soft 2-day-old paint. Brian's question about how the factory does it is a good question. I often think about how the factory did it. Evinrude produced hundreds of thousands of these motors in the 1950s. They must have had some clinging plastic cut to the shape that masked the areas as they applied the different colors. It takes me about 60 minutes and sometimes longer to mask the cowling, and doing that twice takes a lot of patience.
fixing a bad adhesion paint job, when you have to scrape off the peeling paint with a razor blade. I've been dry sanding the raw plastic bumper with 1500 (lightly) plastic clean, mask, blue vinyl fine line, grey scratch pad over fine line edge(to sand the edge and push the fine line down) tack, paint , let dry then pull off the fine line (pulling back on it's self and away from the paint so the tape cuts the paint) can't do the plastic adhesion trick cause Axulta cromax pro has put metallics in it(proof you used theirs for paint warranty) . great vid.
Common sense comes to mind but sometimes you have to think out off the box . i've got a Ford Raptor coming in for a bumper paint so i'll use your method 👍
Sat here saying to myself tape over the fine line tape it will help. Then you go and do it. Good to see we all have the same types of problems, better to know other get around these problems in the same way.
I do these almost exclusively and while not fun I have a system. I scuff the paint line and all edges with a yellow fine sponge to insure adhesion then I mask about 1/4' away from paint edge and the last thing I do is apply my boundary tape. It allows me to pull the tape off as soon as I put my clear gun down and come back for all the other stuff after its dry so less chance of getting trash in clear or worse....touching it.. Piece of cake.
My most hated job is similar, but rather particular. We restore quite a few of Mercedes Benz 280 SL Pagode, taping of the weel covers is a pain in the a**.
Masking and fine line is my favorite part. I do patterns on custom jobs so I spend hours and hours . I prefer the crepe paper fineline tape and i go a smaller width on the curves. Smaller the curve thinner the tape.
What’s worse than doing this every once a while is working for a Subaru Certified collision repair body shop. I do these bumpers every day and what we do is we spray Adhesion promoter to where the fine line will be and we don’t ever stretch the fine line + we put a piece of tape with a flip side in top of the fine line at every curve, we can even bake it and it will not lift if done correct✅
Great video on fine line taping.. Thank you brother. My least favorite is what I want to master.. I suck spraying clear.. I try everything but do not do it enough to master so far
I did it for 23 years and got out of it for more than 20 years now and I am getting back into it. I have my first job in more than 20 years this weekend, the price of things is just plan nuts. How do you make any money now a days??
My hate job would definitely have to be removing old decals or black frame tape with the rubber wheel followed by the left over glue. The adhesion promoter we use has silver metallic added as a coverage indicator You also removed the fine line at a good 33-45 degree angle that helps slice through the paint coats cleanly. Mint job. Does the adhesion promoter leave any residue or line when you mask over it?
I’m just starting so it’s all just kind of frustrating but I’m trying my best. Just did my back bumper with rattle and it didn’t workout the way I wanted it but I eventually will make it look better.
I absolutely hate Detail sanding all the nooks and crannies especially on bumper covers. But, like they say, the part of the job you hate the most is probably the one thing you do best.
My top 4 hated things to do , 2 tones , painting roofs on big vehicles, textured bumpers , and stone guard . If it involves me having to tape things 2 times or hold me up painting I don't like doing it 😂 heck had a 2 tone truck bed both left and right side that paid 14 hours to do and it took me right at 5 and a half hours to finish because not only was it a 2 tone it was also a tricoat white
I didn't mind masking or prepping, but even though I did it since the days of lacquer, buffing never really interested me, I just wanted to be in the booth.
With base tape and then fine line then another layer of tape will the paint be to thick on the edge super video and thanks for the easy way you teach the methods of painting from across the pond
I always thought the black plastic was an insert through the painted plastic. It has been on all my cars.. so no masking at the factory. I dont know about that bumper though
For me, the worst job is to repair a cracked bumper. Usually repairs takes more time than overall paint job. Sometimes new bumpers are not available in my country and cost alot which required to ship the bumper from overseas.
You can fix a cracked bumper by using 3M panel bonding. Just make sure you sand the back of the bumper that has the crack and then just apply as needed. Once it’s dry just sand the crack till it’s low enough to add bondo. A good panel bond is “3M 04240” 👍👍
I work at a shop in the town where Subarus are built. We pick up their damaged vehicle that their management drive that get damaged and we repair them. Next time I run out to pick one up, I will ask one of the employees to see how they mask the bumpers at the factory.
Taping your car I see you use the yellow tape. I seen this on the the paint dealers shelf. I chose the green scotch tape instead. I dont get a perfect paint line, paint gets under the tape in places. 40 years ago sherwin williams had the best tape. Now its super thin and not as good. Bought some brown colored tape from walmart and that left a residue or film tape line on the car after a few days. In all of your videos I see you use yellow tape. Thanks again. 70 and still learning.
Hi Brian my most hated job is masking the front door gap to fender to stop overspray getting into the a post I try to do it mostly from inside but with hinges, check straps and wiring gaitors it's difficult.
Hey Brian I really like your videos I just wanted to let you know that you can Ashley paint texture on any trim or bumper we had done a lot texture paint jobs in the shop I work
Good video Brian. And for me just another way to look at optimal “un tape time” as far as best time to ensure you get a good line when pulling the fine line is almost just like the time you wait between coats pre say when you touch the tape with your finger and it doesn’t string it just prints. When that happens wait a few more mins and pull the tape. That’s just the way I take the well how long do I wait 5 mins 10 mins I’m using this clear that clear.
I hate assembly and disassembly because I don't know how to gethings apart, especially on a vintage muscle car, and then it's a pain to get everything all lined up again afterwards. It's probably easier with newer cars/pieces.
Quite the opposite for me. I sometimes struggle on a 2021 vehicle yet I had an 87 Monte blown apart in the garage for 7 years and put it all back together last year and barely struggled lol
I imagine that job being worse with a white car, the line would really stand out. I hate sanding the worse of anything. And that makes me go too fast and stop before I have it really done right And that makes me hate painting because it never looks as good as it should.
Hey Brian, do you have video of doing a matte finish and what the steps would be to set it up. Apologies if this has been asked already. if you have a video can you point me in the right direction? thanks in advance!

Hey Brian, new to the channel, getting back into paint. When I was an apprentice years ago, our lead painter would have to bake certain bumper covers but not all prior to base. I have been asked to paint a plastic bed cover for a truck. I have never done it. It's faded and has the factory bumps all over it. Oh man... That really sucks... But in my case, I Hate the door molding trimm and the Windows rubbers. In older cars they do not sell it anymore, and you cannot take it out... And plastic covers and trimms of the older bumpers is the same problem. You cannot take them out, or you will broke or crack... I really, really Hate it... Cheers!
To do what you did to this bumper cover what would you charge for it ? I hate to cut and buff I try not to have to do it but sometimes well you just have too !
I domt know about insurance companies everywhere else but where i live the time they pay out for a roof is very small. Basically the same as doing the hood, even though most roofs are twice the size and alot harder to get at
What I hate is dealing with trim and emblems that I have to remove. You know, there's the rubber window scraper at the top of the door. Try getting those off. Or getting tape to stick to them if not.
Going to old school- the Chevy door panel clips, the metal ones that are spring loaded and RIP the fiber board door panel and stay in the door shell holes..Glad i'm long retired..
Hey buddy I would like to know when it's the best time to peel the tape. Like how long you let the paint to dry till you peel the tape? Awesome channel buddy.
Do you ever spray adhesion promoter in between layers of like a 3 stage paint job? Like if you have the base coat down and want to do a candy or pearl, do you ever use it again? Or only on the raw surface and not required ever after?
I would have to say buffing a roof with a 8inch wool pad would have to be one of my pet hates as you have not alot of control when your arms are at full stretch

I do have a question i shot some of the finish 1 clear on a bumper cover and a couple mirror caps and was very impressed with the overall looks an gloss and doi, how well do you think it will hold up in the long run and if you was using it through yor dv1 clear coat gun what psi do you shoot it at when using the dv1?? Again thanks for all the great advice and keep the video's coming!!!!
Awesome video Brian and thanks for sharing those tips with us because masking is most stressful job in that trade 🤣😂and from today I will start using the fine line better most of my edges use to lift up but I know now Brian much love ❤️ I really enjoyed that video Brian 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌💪💪💪
I truly hate masking cars. It's even worse because I also work down here at my uncle's shop in Hialeah and the humidity and heat kills me in the booth 😓
Huge thank you for the tip of laying 1/2" tape before fine line, great idea.. also wanted to ask, what wireless mic do you use to pair with your camera? Can you drop a link? Thanks

I truly hate masking cars. It's even worse because I also work down here at my uncle's shop in Hialeah and the humidity and heat kills me in the booth 😓
Great video Brian, i personally hate doing filler work
