Always thought this show deserved a better reception than it received. I will forever be thankful that the song Five Boys was beautifully preserved on the concept album with a heart wrenching performance by Betty Buckley. The song was ultimately cut in previews. This was a real treat to see today - thank you Spiderwoman!
Thanks for posting this. I worked as the child wrangler on this show's New Haven tryout back when they had a kid in the show. I love this score and I loved coming to work everyday and seeing this cast, who were as wonderful offstage as they were in performance. Of all the flops I worked on, this was the most obvious. Despite the wealth of extraordinary musical material and talent involved, there just wasn't any show there. Still, I remember this time of my life very very fondly. This press reel took me back. Thanks again.
I saw this play. What an amazing production. The performances and music had you wanting to jump up out of your seat. I wish it would come back to broadway!
Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this video! I saw this show twice in 1999 and LOVED IT! I am not from the USA and I felt this music and the themes of this musical very universal. I am a Wildhorn fan and I still remember the excitement of the audience during the show. You are THE BEST, Aurora!
I remember seeing this in previews and the moment the house lights came up at intermission my date and I turned to each other and simultaneously said “this is terrible.” This would have worked better as a concert rather than a fully realized production. It just didn’t have a coherent storyline. The one positive was that the cast, particularly the men, had the best voices I had heard on Broadway up to that point.
Thanks for this! I saw the show on a school field trip to NYC. Bought both the concept and the 2-disc CDs AND the vocal selections book. I'd argue to say that some of this music is FW's better work. Wish I had seen the retooled version at Ford's Theatre in DC.
Spider woman you really pulled out the obscure footage haha. Do you have anything of Beth Leavel from this show?? I have been searching for years and I can’t find anything
I saw the out of town tryout for this show in New Haven while a student at Yale. I thought it was weird that they would try to make you feel sympathetic for people that wanted to keep slavery 😬 wouldn’t fly in the current climate.
I remember that time when those three shows were on. I hated J&H. Still remember people snickering during Linda Eder’s death scene because she was such a bad actress. The show was much better listened to than seen. Scarlet Pimpernel was entirely forgettable. And I didn’t get to see this because it closed before I could muster myself to see a third FW show in such a short period time.
Saw this on Broadway when it first opened and just hated it. I had enjoyed The Scarlet Pimpernell and Jekyll and Hyde, but this just didn't work for me. I am also a broadway purist and seeing supposedly period people in period costumes with obvious madonna mics on their faces just took me out of any believability they might achieve. It is still one of my biggest pet peeves on Broadway. I don't want to see the microphone on the actor's face! Even if skin toned, it cast a shadow. I feel like it's a poor sound engineer who needs the mic to be on the face and right by a performers mouth. Also bad casting of singers who can't project or be heard unless they have a microphone practically in their mouth.
If they have the entire show, why don't they release this AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL production? This is one musical EVERYONE should watch!

I think the song 5 boys was the best one. You're right about betty buckley, she's a powerhouse! The emotion is palpable when she sings.
I love frank wildhorn. Love the music in this show.

Hey if I can ask..... is there a bootleg of this musical? I really wanna see it!!
This show is no longer playing right? They should have come to Indiana -_-
Hasn't been on Broadway since its brief original run in 1999.

The album is simply amazing. The show…not so much

You simply get a better sound if the mic is that close. Suspension of disbelief, we know it’s a show...
