I hate the fact that multiple fandoms have the problem of treating young girl characters like the literal devil for making a few mistakes but then turning around and acting like characters who are just completely horrible are "just misunderstood"
A part of the Moral Oral fandom has this problem where two characters were in a super toxic relationship (Clay and Bloberta) but everyone blames Bloberta despite Clay being the worse of the two because Clay is just a silly guy to them
MLP does this canonically and it drives me crazy. Sure, the 8 year old is the devil and not the princesses that have committed (or attempted to commit) fucking genocide. Or the crazy old guy who wanted to turn the world into chaos. Sure, allow the people who tried to screw over the Earth's day/night cycle and the actual honest-to-god cult-like communist to stick around, but demonize the 8 year old.
This is literally how the Ben 10 fandom treats Kai Green, she's constantly hated on every flaw shown, imagined or percieved and people in the fandom legit think she's worse then the actual dictator villain not to mention alot of the flaws people hate on her for are the exact flaws Ben (the protagonist) has and he's constantly getting excuses made for when he's being an asshole
Taking a complex character and turning them into one archetype... The amount of male characters in fandoms turned into "soft uwu boys" because they have emotions is incredible lol
This. I'm so tired of people calling many male characters that cried once or are not the emotionless killing machines twinks. I don't think they even understand what the word "twink" means, because they use it even for characters who look pretty masculine, but emotional enough to seem like a genuine person.
Whenever you read a fanfiction lower all your expectations and just laugh at the absurdity. After all you're just reading the power fantasy of an insecure 14 year old girl who has never seen or talked to a boy other than her deadbeat father who only financially supports the family and nothing more, but despite that is a feminist brainwashed into believing he was never there for her when in fact he had been there for her since the beginning and was merely assimilated into the cultist mindset fematics have made her believe.
Alphys comes to mind here; there's a scary amount of people who hate her enough to attribute her actually impressive accomplishments to Gaster, leaving her only with mistakes like the amalgamates, Flowey, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if those same people once uttered, "I hope she actually does kill herself."
I hate that many fandoms don't seem to understand what Friendship is. If two characters are nice to each other or spend any amount time alone together, it has to be because "they're in a relationship."
Same here. Don’t they know that there are other loves out there besides Romance? There is friendship, family love and love between you and God. I can never find fun stories (both original and fanfiction) in which two girls or two boys are friends all because some nitwit has the nerve to make them into a gay couple, even when it’s clear that the two girls or two boys are straight and would NEVER be gay because they are kids or adults but one of them already has a an opposite sex love interest.
@@epiclyepicguy For real, it’s even worse cause tails is canonically 8… with sonic being 15/16… people take a sibling-like bond/relationship and turn it into a romantic relationship. While ignoring that if it were to be “romantic” then it would just be a p3dophilic relationship. (And before any “Sonails” Shippers start to rant and rave about this; I don’t care if Sega has removed the ages to keep them ambiguous, it still doesn’t change that one is a prepubescent child and another is a teenager… using that as a justification is like using sugar to put out a grease fire.. it ain’t gonna work and just adds fuel to a growing flame.) Sorry for the long comment, as someone who has been in the sonic fandom since they were little and also find sonic and tails’ brotherly bond wholesome… this really grinds my gears.
Also how they’ll ship two characters who NEVER get along (natsuki and yuri from ddlc) and be like THE CREATOR CONFIRMED IT SO YOU *HAVE* TO SHIP IT!1!1!1!1! Idk when Dan ever confirmed the ship, maybe in ddlc+ but i haven’t played that, and even if he did, I just don’t think natsuki and yuri would work since natsuki always starts arguments so let me not ship them if I don’t want to :( Also the entire point of ddlc is that the girls are in love with you (Monika specifically) I get headcanoning them as bi but they reduce yuri and natsuki to lesbians when they’re quite clearly in love with mc…
If I had a nickel for everytime a complex, well thought out male character that has a few androgynous traits was boiled down into an uwu soft boy, I'd be a millionaire
Yeah, I have a character I really like for its complex personality and the fact that he is a complicated person to the point that neighter the mc could figure him out, not knowing if that said character's dying words were true or just another lie because that character is a compulsive liar that messes with everyone on a daily basis, but the fandom reduced him to a " uwu boy in love with the mc"
@@mtlaura271 I'm like 90% sure that I know who you're talking about, and I 100% agree. Guy didn't even like the MC all that much, he just kinda sorta trusted him because he really didn't like everyone else.
@@mtlaura271 Same, it’s Arthur Pendragon from the Merlin show. His character gets BUTCHERED, even by most fanfic standards. I legit backed out of the fanfiction part because I hated how badly his character was treated.
@mtlaura271 I'm pretty sure I know exactly who you mean, and you're right. He was a very complicated character who messed with everyone's heads and yet the fandom just... ignores all that and focuses on a few teasing lines of dialogue. I get that it can be hard to nail a character's exact personality and mannerism, but it's like they just made up their own character in his place. As someone who is also huge fan of the character and loves analysing his motives and depth, it's so annoying how much the fans boil him down to one thing when he's so much more interesting than that.
@@IHateThisNewChannel Yeah...the fandom instead of enjoying the complicated yet entertaining character, they focus on a few lines that are meant to be taken as jokes to mess with the mc as "Look look guys this totally proves he is really in love with the mc otherwise there is no other reason why he would say that" The fandom made me question why I even like this character but my friend who also loves this character reminded me why I like this character
@@stacki1040because when you're older more often than not you just don't wanna have to deal with hearing the thoughts and opinions of a 13 year old. I used to hate hearing this as a kid but I completely get it now. Don't know how to explain it beyond a maturity issue, but it's nothing personal
@@stacki1040 ^^^ Like it’s fine for kids to be within a fandom, but I want to surround myself with people my age. Discord groups and stuff exist, but you kinda need invites into a space like that. Starting your own only works if you already have friends. And if they’re too public, then you kinda need to tip for around topics just in case a minor might see. Or, alternatively, the website will force you to self censor for the sake of kids. Things like being on TH-cam and having to say things like ‘Unalive’ or ‘Cheese pizza’ just in case. Those are more obvious choices, but even in more subtle conversation, there’s always that constant judge of ‘Is this too far? Is it inappropriate?’ And yeah, part of it is just wanting to hear the opinions of other adults rather than kids. You know how there’s always that argument of ‘You’re judging this too hard, it’s a kids show so it needs to be simplified for kids?’ I think the reverse can also be true where a younger audience can miss important details of a piece of media because they focus on some details way more than others.
the "people treating headcanons as canon" part is too real I was in a fandom once where some people did that then started harassing people because they like a character who is "evil" in their headcanon
I’m gay and all but I hate when ppl think they’re so right about their gay hc on a character, like when someone ships that character with a girl they’re like “how could you” even though the character was never explicitly gay and is implied to like all genders in fact
I see this a lot with "Azula was abused" and "Chara isn't evil" just because it pisses people off, I treat "Dumbledore is gay" the same way. I don't care what the creators say after the work is published. Show me where it's stated in the actual work, or it's not canon.
What i will call the "Papyrus effect" it's not fandom-specific but it's when the fandom takes a character that isn’t a child, but has a childish personality and infantalizes them and uses it as a reason to hate on any ships or nsfw of sed character. This is especially troublesome when the character is either canonically neurodivergent or neurodivergent-coded
yellow guy from dhmis, even tho i'll probably hate any sexualized content about him, the fandom treat him as a 8 years old when he's canonically as old as the other puppets.
@@elsnasdragonnet6959 ah, i guess it's the fact that he's short and some of his behavior. Though i guess a lot of characters who might be neurodivergent-coded fall victim to this because "they're so childish"
@@TheLastBlenderBender yeah, yellow guy is heavily neuroduveegent coded but to be fair he was also written as childish. That's a point in the last episode of the second season where he says something like "maybe they're not responsable for me", I interpret this as a point for disabled people and how they're infantilized. Anyway, this show is my brainrot
The underappreciation of platonic love/friendships with characters. It's easy to find an abuncance of shipping content, but it seems as though that a lot of content of characters who platonically love each other are mostly found in found family groupings. Though of course, that's not to say that there aren't examples of characters having really good friendships with each other in fandom.
Yeah and whenever two characters that are the same gender are best friends they're automatically seen as gay because they really care each other so that must mean that they love each other too in a romantic way
As an aro ace, it is incredibly frustrating when most of my fandom seems to revolve around ships/love interests. Don’t get me wrong, I think the ships are cute, but there is many other concepts in the media that could be expanded on..
I hate how platonic "character & reader" fics are so unpopular compared to romance or smut fics. And the ones that do exist are either super short or just aren't very exciting. I'm also scared of ever headcanoning a character as aroace... Especially if it's a good-looking character. I'm afraid the shippers/simps will kill me
I’m not aro nor ace myself, but shipping culture still confuses me. I do have my OTPs sure, but how do some people go out of their way to find an OTP in every fandom they’re in? What’s with the vehement defending and attacking for flimsy reasons? Why can’t I have a story about friendship or adventure with the romance being a side at most? I just wanna streamline my lores or have fun with AUs, what’s wrong with not focusing on the main ship itself?
There are so many good platonic character dynamics that only get romantic fics because that seems to be the only thing people see, and whenever I run into that kind of content I kind of subconsiously try to understand why they see it that way and after a while I start to see it too and I hate it
The neurodivergent/coded character outright being called "mentally a child", being infantilized, doesnt know what sex is, etc. As a neurodivergent person, this is the biggest yikes personally and it makes me wonder how they think of and treat real life neurodivergent people.😬 This mindset ruined the character for me, i cringe when people show even the smallest amount of "childish" behavior in this character even if it would be perfectly normal and okay or even in character.
Tim Burton is autistic who was married and had kids. Wait until those people hear about that. Autistic people, like myself, aren’t dumb children. I know how babies are made, I want to be married, and I have some childish traits, but I am not a mindless baby.
Sooooooo many examples, off the top of my head Yellow guy DHMIS (kind of understandable in a way concidering he is a children’s show character. Papyrus undertale (stop it)
also the infantilization of male characters. most fandoms I've been in have this problem where they'll love the boy and hate the girl despite the fact that they're basically the same age and both have comparable backstories. any time the girl is badass or fighting - she's awful and ruthless and completely inexcusable but when the boy is fighting he's "doing what he has to" or is empowering or deserves to let off this anger. when the girls having an emotional moment she's a cry baby or too sensitive and any sort of integrity she had as a character is completely stripped away cuz she sucks now but when its the boy - its a dramatic and heart warming moment that only deepens his character. when the girl says something funny she's trying too hard but when the boy says something funny he's a silly little precious uwu baby boy who needs to be protected. you get what i mean but I just hate the exaggeration
@@m00npie-333 I think they're referring to the fact that none of her stalker behavior gets condemned. It gets encouraged and is seen as quirky. Forgive me for misremembering as I dropped the show around season 4 and have only heard bits of it. Please correct me if im wrong but they give more flack to Chat Noir for being flirtatious (of course if it's uncomfortable of course call it out). It's seen as a negative trait while Marinette being a stalker is seen as a positive. Hell, I heard the show went out of its way to try to justify the behavior as to why Marinette acts this way. It's a cheap and gross way to not address something that can help her become a better person if she stops stalking Adrian. Remember, double standards can go both ways.
First point makes me think of Papyrus from Undertale My primary example is how Fanon Papyrus hates puns just because Cannon Papyrus got upset when sans joked around instead of working. Papyrus got upset because sans wasn't working, the puns were just insult to injury. Papyrus made more puns in Undertale than sans did, sans just made more overall jokes.
And how Fanon Papyrus is obsessed with spaghetti while Canon Papyrus has made it ingame like one time and didn't even eat any. Also, according to a QnA his favorite food is actually oatmeal 😂
@@avacadotoast5571 tbh i thought he just made the spaghetti to lure a human and i wouldn't have expected him to have a fave food at all cause it would just fall out of him lol
My fandom doesn’t understand that platonic relationships can do things that romantic and sexual relationships do, and still be a platonic relationship. They have bashed multiple creators for making platonic relationships do “too much” when it’s just fine.
@@vernyulkisasszony4708no because someone I saw in a replies literally said “it’s literally canon they held hands” and like 5 people (including me) had to clarify it can be romantic AND platonic
people that do that dont understand what friendship is because they dont have any real ones. if youve ever had someone you know for a fact youd call your "best friend", of course youre thinking about each other on a daily basis, your lives are intertwined in their own way separate to that of a romantic partner. you share your highs and lows, ask each other for advice, buy gifts you think the person likes just because, help each other out when needed. you are a positive influence on each other. of course you spend a lot of time together.
The amount of mischaracterization in the fandom gets really annoying at times. Characters get dumbed down to "She's depressed" or "He's mean to everyone" and it ruins the point and depth of the characters and any character growth that they've had gets ignored. It feels so difficult to find examples of people writing the characters correctly and not just using the dumbed down fandom version.
from your pfp I'm guessing you're talking project SEKAI and honestly bro literally every character gets mischaracterized so badly that it wants to make me rip my hair out. i wanna say more but ill just probably get even more pissed probably🗣🗣

I want more sworn sibling dynamics rather than just romance stuff. Let me see two bros do cool shit to each other for no other reason than “I swore to him I would be by his side even in the flames of hell.”
Jonathan and William byers from stranger things is a good one! Sadly there's not that much screen time with the two. But they'd do anything for each other. There is quite the amount of romance in the show, but it's not the main focus.
I sometimes get upset when people HC mental disabilities without thinking about WHY they do. For this example I'll use Denki. I feel like some people HC that he has ADHD, which is alright in itself, but then they also constantly feel the need to "remind" everybody that he's an idiot. As somebody with ADHD, it feels a bit hurtful. Let it be known, I AGREE WITH THIS HC. I see Denki possibly having ADHD because "he just like me fr". I just hate when people tie in a mental disability HC with a character being stupid.
Actually, something to note is that they're also wrong about him being stupid. He can be reckless and he becomes "stupid" when he overuses his quirk, but he is actually relatively smart. Another reason why people call him stupid is because he's low in the class rankings for their test scores, but they forget that everyone has to take a written exam to get into the school in the first place. Yes he's low in his class, but at most other schools he'd be around the top of the class.
I'm kind of the opposite in my fandom, where someone will say "this guy is an idiot" and I go, "he's just a kid with ADHD, he's trying his best, and he can't help that he makes mistakes sometimes. It doesn't make him an idiot! Leave Andy alone!!"
I'm in a lot of fandoms, but the biggest one and the one I've been in since I was a kid is the Spider-Man fandom. The thing I absolutely hate the most is the horrifically large number of people who spew constant hate towards Miles Morales as a character, and the people who like him. Some of it is valid criticism, like when they say that he has very few original villains of his own and usually ends up fighting Peter Parker's rogues gallery instead, or when they say that he's often relegated to being Peter's student rather than his own fully realized hero in his own right... But a lot of the hate is just straight up racism tbh. It's really bad, OMG. Some of them try to hide their racism by claiming that they just don't like him because they prefer Peter, but then they never complain about other versions of Spider-Man that aren't Peter, it's only Miles that they complain about and dislike so vocally. Obviously not everyone that dislikes Miles Morales is racist, but so many of them are and it's genuinely disgusting.
I like Peter Parker because he's classic, handsome and funny. Miles Morales seems like a cool guy too but I don't know him as well as I kniw Peter and honestly I want to know him better. I'm also absolutely in love with Pavitr and Hobie from newest movie
When people claim that a ship is “toxic” when the worst things that they have done is argue with each other and have a few disagreements but are actually good for each other but when two people are incredibly toxic for each other it is automatically the best ship ever and is adorable and the pairing is “couple goals”. Edit: WHERE ARE ALL THESES LIKES COMING FROM????!!!!??!!?!!!?!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, I've been in a fandom where people constantly ship literal enemies, so it doesn't bother me anymore. As long as it isn't incest or pedophilia.
Fr! Just today, for example, i was in a general ship discussion talking and comparing different dynamics and how they work, i saw someone hating on Soul x Maka from Soul Eater bc "its super toxic", but go around and rave about how Misa x Light is such a wonderful ship later on. I mean, it's valid, ships don't necessarily have to portray happy or healthy relationships, its about dynamics in fiction people find engaging, and Misa x Light, if not healthy, it is indeed a pretty interesting thing to see, but the bizarre double standard...! The audacity to seriously say (and insist) that Soul x Maka is toxic...! I get not shipping it or seeinv it as platonic, heck, even hating it, bc that's about personal taste and stuff, but them??? Toxic?? When they're canonically BFFs and have obe of the most supportive M/W relationships (not necessarily romantic) in the canon of Big Shounens™??? Give me a break
Fighting in a relationship is actually good but in a reasonable way fighting every day is bad but fighting literally never is suspicious talk talk to each other chat we all have problems and if you somehow don't you have reached the highest form of a relationship
@@jtopc2116 NO BC FR 😭 I was so flabbergasted, it left me with no words, my brain screeched to a halt bc I couldn't process what they were spewing. Setting the manga aside, the anime showcased pretty clearly their infinite support, understanding and care for one another, last time I saw it was years ago, but I still remember that thing they did were they both were always very sensitive about even the smallest emotional changes in the other and had this unique non-verbal communication in which they either read the other's body language or read between the lines of what the other both said and what they didn't say. One of the best relationship (again, platonic or otherwise) writing I've had the pleasure to see, the anime didn't just tell the audience they were best friends and soulmates, it showed us. And don't get me started on the manga! That's where they really dig out the pair's matching abandonment and self-esteem issues for maximum hurt/comfort and unrelenting support for one another. And I'm there looking at that other fella stating completely unironically that they're one of the most toxic things to walk the earth. Not only that, but besides later on raving about how a shining example of an astounding relationship Misa x Light is, they also unironically declared that Soul should end up with Blair ☠️☠️☠️ We all thought they were trolling: they weren't.
For me, it's "uwuification" or "woobifying" when the character is canonically capable of themselves, and has their rough moments, but still capable. They don't need some "holier-than-thou savior" to help them do everything and treat the character like they cannot do anything by themselves without fucking it up and bashing them over it
Bonus awful points for when it's a disabled character and everyone immediately starts infantilizing them and acting like they can't take care of themself and need to be babied [exasperated facepalm]
My biggest fandom pet peeve is literally just is the lack of media literacy. Creates a lot of harm to people's health and overall A TON of unnecessary conflict.
For the Vocaloid fandom: One one hand, you have those new fans who don't bother to learn more about Vocaloid content (often only sticking to Project Sekai) and believe/spread blatantly false information about Vocaloid, then get mad when older fans correct them (often claiming we're "forcing them to know everything about Vocaloid") or even claiming that the older fans are wrong when they clearly aren't. On the other hand, you also have the unconditional hostility certain older fans hold towards any newer fan. For any fandom really, the culture of hating on "newgens" is something I'm not fond of at all. Like, isn't the fandom growing a good thing?
I hate how they took my favorite character and reduced her entire personality to "cute smol lesbian bean amazing girlfriend". Bro, she had so much development and personality but they just ignore all of that.
@@queijo4218 gods above I completely agree with you, Amity is such a fascinating character with both soft and badass sides to her, she's complex not whatever the fans did to her
the "you wrote this so you must condone it irl" thing is such a big problem in my fandom. im not gonna tell you i dont condone shit i write in my fics because like come ON. i write about my trauma to cope and ive gotten countless death threats because i dont go out of my way to say i dont condone it.
Next time someone tries to hit you with a “you wrote this, so you must condone it and be a bad person,” point out something bad that happened in canon and ask them if that makes the author of the canon story a bad person.
The problem is when people taint awful situations like UwUcute lovely romance When it’s literally a man abusing a child. Don’t get me wrong I do love to write dark stuff, I literally have an Oc that’s necrophilic cuz it’s a villain. But it makes me sick when people fetish those dark topics.
I was in a fandom where an actually CANON ship received a lot of hate because 1) The age difference between them is 3 years and 2) because it's straight and the girl interrupts the boy's "actual boyfriend." What’s funny is that the "boyfriend" in question has more chemistry with the girl than the guy in the ship. In fact, the "boyfriends" have literally only interactted ONCE! While for the girl, she had quite a decent chemistry with the "actual boyfriend" and they're good friends. It's so popular that a lot of people are actually convinced that they're a couple and the girl is a ship stealer. (In case you're wondering, the difference between the 2 boys is 1 year)
Happened in real life too, those two brazillian youtubers where higly shipped together around 2017 - 2019, and the girlfriend of one just got MASSIVE hate 2023 rlly this famous influencer confirmed he had a girlfriend and the girl was bombed with hate from delusional fangirls
I'm in a LOT of fandoms, so i'm gonna speak of the one i'm focusing on now. The things i hate is: People saying a character is mean, but they either misunderstood their story or didn't read it. People fighting over ships(as a multishipper i say that's straight up stupid)
Heavy on the shipping one. As someone in the TOH fandom, a lot of people are chill, but there's that subsection who will scream at anyone who *dares* ship Willow and Luz because "Lumity is canon." Like I adore both. Both are adorable pairings, just bc willuz isn't canon doesn't make it toxic or anything lol let me enjoy both!
LONG FANDOM RANT INCOMING I'm gonna say it, the first one applies to Mapleshade in Mapleshade's vengance. Mfs literally call her a Karen or bad before her breakdown when all the mean things she did was basically accidentally stepping on someone's tail at the gathering. Yeah she lied about the origins of her children but your ass would too if the truth would get them fucking booted into the wilderness, she should have lied more to save her ass actually. And yeah no asking people to not discard you or your rights instead falling on your knees immedietly and apoligizing for your existence isn't being an asshole, that’s just not being a doormat. She wasn't in the wrong for hoping for some basic empathy from people in power, just naive in this franchise. Yeah she's a real bad bitch once she's dead and after killing people, but yk she's in kitty cat hell at that point who doesn't start to suck as a character after their death lets be real. I know some people back in the day argued that she should be in Starclan but at that point in tome Ashfur went legit to Starclan for loving too much while plotting the murder of 4 people because his ex dared to dump him. There's also that goofy ah idea around that she babytrapped her cheating ass husband for like. Basically hoping that having children would mean their relationship would be more serious from now on. And feeling jealous for 2 lines because an another girl was doing an estabilished romantic gesture with her man, that she ended up being right about being cheated on with anyways. If that was not enough reason for being a goofy argument, then there is the fact that she can literally by definition not babytrap her mate because the feral cats in the woods do not have contraception. Babytrapping requires you to lie about being on contraception. Idk I think her villianous part was not played upon enough when she was alive. 2/3 of her victims were cunts with no repurcussion for their actions, I didn't feel the slightest sad at her killing them. Not because I think killing people is justifiable irl but you just know no one will give them consequences for throwing small children and their mother out for unimportant shit, and it was satisfying seeing them get decked by her. Imo, Mapleshade should have killed more people, increasingly more distant from having to do anything with her. Oakstar had it coming, Darkstar was kinda a cunt to her for no reason but she wasn't ultimately the one to kick children out, Bloomheart you didn't really have time to learn to hate or dislike but would be an emotionally consistant target, Rabbitfur you understand even if he had no ill intentions probably, the Thunderclan deputy is a stretch, and I dunno Nettlepaw is where you would be like "woah woah he's like the one person to be nice to you what are you doing?". Let her do shit other than being the unexplaied inner voice of Tigerclaw FOR NO FUCKING REASON WTF WAS SHE DOING THERE. ARE YOU REALLY UNDERMINING THE BIG BAD OF THE SERIES LIKE THAT FUCKING COME ON. SHE SHOULDN'T BE THERE. ALSO DO SOMETHING WITH HER RATHER THAN JUST FORGETTING HER IN THE DARK FOREST LET HER PERMA DIE IN A DIGNIFIED LITERARY WAY OR SOMETHING

It's probably the only fandom where "i'm gonna remake your work but "better" than you did" is a tolerated mindset. Also oversaturation of a certain character
i knew it was undertale the moment i read "over-saturation of a certain character". been in that fandom for years and if you aren't obsessed with sans on some level you basically aren't an undertale fan it feels like, lmao 💀
1 month late but.... Im also a part of the UT fandom and i feel like the whole "remake" business is not that bad... when compared to the FNAF fandom at least
That’s an easy question. The Mario Kart fandom: I’m SICK AND TIRED of people constantly blaming the Blue Shell for their friendship problems. I’d say I’m biased because it’s my favourite item, but guess what? I used to dislike it, too. Did I whine about it on the internet, though? No. If one item in a video game is enough to make you have a petty fall-out with your friends, then the item isn’t the problem. The kicker is that in the first entry of the series, it didn’t even exist, and people are always talking about how unfair it is and how hard it is to catch up if you fall behind. Gee, I WONDER why a Mario Kart game with NOTHING to slow down the person in first would be HARD TO CATCH UP IN. That’s what made me appreciate the Blue Shell, actually. I’m so sick of people making unfunny memes about it where they exaggerate it and act like _it’s_ the problem. They act like it’s a completely normal thing for it to ‘end friendships’, too. Are you PROUD of having bad friends, or being the bad friend if you’re making memes like that? I HATE it. It’s gotten to the point where the GAMES have poked fun at it, too. Beep-0 jokes about it attacking you if you were to restore it (it was fossilised) in Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Yeah, Beep-0, I _wonder_ why something that has been fossilised for Grambe-knows how many years would attack a group of complete strangers standing in front of it after suddenly regaining life…
@@thediscodevil0949 It is a joke, kind of like how people say monopoly destroys friendships, no person's friendship has actually been destroyed by monopoly, and no person's friendship has been destroyed by blue shells or chance time.
I genuinely hate my biggest fandom, and my most major issue is the constant racebending, from making dark skinned characters light skinned and vice versa, it drives me mad
I’m always conflicted on that issue because most of the times it’s just a useless, kinda racist addition, but I have some passes to it like April O’ Neil from TMNT. And I just wonder where or if there’s a line to draw here, or if I’m just being hypocritical
For me many things - Romanticization of villains - The divide between pro/anti liking characters romantically/sexually - You will get harassed based on your tastes, especially if you like an unpopular character or hate a popular one
idk what fandom this is but from what i've seen in mine (which is not much) yeah i get harassed for hating Johnny Cage and being down bad x100 for the gunslinger
@@psevdonimietohuinaidk but the 3rd point definitely applies to BFB, especially hating on people who like unpopular characters. The amount of people I've seen harassed because they like Rocky, Grassy, Pin etc
my most disliked one is when people see a canon character, identify with one or a few traits they have, and immediately decide that that character is exactly like them and therefore share all of their little idiosyncrasies and quirks. regardless of canon information against it they go so hard into “they’re just like me fr” that it leaves me confused and mildly uncomfortable. maybe it’s just because it’s so different to my own mindset where i really, really want to keep things as canonically accurate as possible regarding characterisation.
omg, SAME. i've dabbled in fanwork and try to keep the characters i use as canonly aligned as possible, and then i see people doing what you said and i also can't help but feel oddly uncomfortable with the way people portray characters sometimes. i also frankly don't like making AUs, i prefer to just use the characters as they are. mischaracterization is a pet peeve of mine lol.
I don’t necessarily mind changes like that as long as they tag it or mention in summary that it is out of character. It’s weird when they talk in comments like that is canon and not headcanon, or don’t add any tags. Usually saves time reading the fic if it’s tagged, although sometimes I’ll stick around if it’s a good AU and treated as such
Trauma fetishization, occasionally creepy amounts of enthusiasm about the sex lives of canonically underage characters, and ace erasure, in exactly that order.
If I manage to get the novel I'm working on published and it becomes popular, I will make it very, VERY CLEAR that the main character is aro/ace. I hate that there is a severe lack of representation
The constant boiling down of INCREDIBLY COMPLEX CHARACTERS into one or two character traits and that's it. Each main character in this series is masterfully written with so many layers and yet people only ever seem to see them for one or two traits. they never seem to understand their character ambitions or traumas past their basic personality and what the do/talk about the most.
LEGIIIIIT this is exactly why I LOOOVE having close friends that share some of my same fandoms/hyperfixations because it's fun just sitting and having long discussions about the more complex elements of characters AARGH one of my favorite things!!!
@@meowmeow7476 I agree with you wholeheartedly!!! Me and my friend actually ended up like. converting people into fans of one of our hyperfixes so we would have more people to genuinely discuss it with (and also because the fandoms small asf and we were convinced there was nobody else in the general area knew of its existance (apparently one dude actually did but that was it)) srry for rambling

Adjacent to this, when a character has some kind of expression or turn of phrase that they use occasionally in canon that nobody else uses. In fanfic, people will take that and make a character say it EVERY TIME THEY SPEAK. Like they HAVE to sign off their every sentence with their "catchphrase".
Not specific to any one fandom, but I can name some where it was a real problem; character assassinations. Not just the ‘whoops I flattened this character’s personality into a pancake and now they’re boring/ooc’, I mean full on ‘you will be the scum of the earth for this fanfic specifically’ malicious intent. Some stories want to make certain characters friends/lovers so much they’ll ruin every other relationship in canon just to have the two stick together against all odds. This type of story can work, but it requires the author to show how the canon version turns into the villain. Most… don’t, do that.
@@helloill672 yeah Harry Potter was one of the rough ones. I remember a distinct genre of fic that’d start with a scene where Ron and Hermione are being paid by Dumbledore to spy on Harry, and take a moment to vocally express how much they hate him and wouldn’t hang out with him unless they were paid. And again, there are ways to make it work, they just aren’t gonna happen in an edgy wish fulfillment Drarry fic.
Mine is with ships tbh. A lot of people are too hardcore shippers to even take another opinion. Thankfully, haven't found many people who are like that, but a fair few get really defensive and toxic when someone likes a different ship or says they kinda dislike the ship
this with destiel years ago i said "you can ship destiel all you want but don't bring it up to jensen ackles" cause at the time Jensen was uncomfortable talking about it as it clearly wasn't a canon thing back then, and as the actor he has every right to like or dislike shipping, but they come back and said i wasn't letting them ship destiel when my first sentence was you can ship destiel if you want. they seem to cherry pick what you say if it seems negative to the ship
The thing I dislike most about my fandom is how the story line keeps on getting halted to make way for little side quests, like, every single one of the side characters gets an arc in every new season. It’s the 9th volume and all they’ve done is sit around ‘training’ or defeating small villains. This also means the main characters get less screen time, so I’m sitting here wondering what the flip the protagonist’s childhood was like. Yes, the fandom is RWBY. Still a great show.
Definitely agree that the plot and writing for RWBY has some issues. I imagine if Monty were still here things would be a lot better since they had to go off a lot of his notes. The past few volumes were the only ones that felt halting to me though, but I think that's at least partially intentional because the characters find themselves in an inherently impossible conflict. It's especially why I actually enjoyed the 9th Volume and think it was actually quite progressive. Yes, their situation is the same once they get back, but they've regained that hope and strength to keep going that they'd slowly been losing the past few volumes, and I found that very refreshing too. I don't consider the middle volumes halting because they're traveling to new places in and between the four kingdoms and making progress on what they're learning and gaining. I think the conflict/plot during these volumes may seem halting for their lack of importance afterwards, but any well-written story will recapitulate everything together in the end and wrap itself up neatly with a bow (An example for this would be FMA Brotherhood. There are small episodic things, or even whole season things that don't seem to contribute much until the very end, where people come together to defeat the antagonist). Anyways, sorry for the rant. I hope you don't think I'm trying to force my opinion or anything, I just wanted to share my optimistic viewpoint and possibly give a different side for people to look at. You're all entitled to your own thoughts and opinions :)

What I hate about the fandom I’m in (And every fandom in general) : 1. Harassing fans/people who aren’t in the fandom/people who are in the franchise over stuff/opinions . It’s ok to disagree but it’s not ok to harass/dox/send death threats other people. 2. Making NSFW art work of minor characters and then claiming that you “age them up” when they are clearly still have the childlike features on them 3. Racism/Homophobia/Transphobia/Ableism and many more hate 4. Crap on people for their cosplay because they’re a different race. Cosplay as anyone no matter what race/ethnicity you are There’s many more I hate in fandoms, but those are the three I really hate in fandoms I’m general.
@@vexywexypoo yes. It’s one thing to age them in the vain of “Hey you guys look, I drew The Powerpuff Girls as adults and wrote fanfics dealing with adult problems” and “This is my take of Hello Kitty looking like an adult.”. But it’s an another thing to draw minor characters to adults to just lewd them.
I personally dislike the pushes against darkfics that I've seen. Some of the most interesting and most thought provoking fanfics that I've ever read have been darkfics, and the authors were incredibly talented in their writing. They were also exceptional at exploring deeper topics and delving into the psyche of the characters. I don't think we should snuff out potential talent like that. Also, it's better people get it out of their system in some way or another rather than just bottling it up.
Agree, but there should be limitations on those kind of things. Like when the author of the dark fic is trying to push it on people who do not wish to read or view that sort of content. Same with NSFW.
Same. I think they shouldn't be immediately labeled as disgusting or unethical, with plenty of warnings and a censor to allow peeps that don't like it not see it then I don't really see the problem
@@goodoldfashionedangel who is dong that? because if i see a fic is a darkfic i just don't click it i have never been forced to read a darkfic is that a thing?
Welcome Home fandom, making several users quit the fandom from either breaking AU maker's boundaries or the literal creator Clown's boundaries. I hate it.
I've noticed that even though our community claims to be respectful, the Fandom can be quite intense. This became apparent to me when Matpat made a theory video and everything seemed to go haywire.
6:21 That _has_ to be Shane from Stardew Valley. I had to unsubscribe from Lummi because she kept saying that Shane fans have a savior complex and can’t fix him when, in reality, she’s missing the whole point. While I was dealing with crippling depression, helping Shane through his gave me hope for myself.
Yes! I never subscribed to her because the first video of hers I saw was her trash talking shane, but youtube keeps recommending her to me.i really think how people react to shane says something about their person. The negative talk about shane hurts me sometimes since I feel we share some traits and experiences. I'm depressed, i used to act rude to push people away, because "it's better if they never knew me." I just can't comprehend someone having so little sympathy that they look at a pretty realistic portrayal of depression and decide that character is unforgivable and unworthy of love. The more I think about it, the more it hurts. Do they really think that about us? Would they say it so clearly to me?
This feels like a pretty good place to put my opinions about the Omori fandom. Now thankfully I don’t find Omori’s fandom to be very toxic, everyone in it is very nice and talented, it’s just that literally no one can shut their mouth about the main plot twist of the game. It’s a real big story beat so I get why people talk about it all the time, but every single comments section on every video that even briefly references the game always has that one comment that’s like “This song drops harder then [SPOILER][SPOILER][SPOILER]” or “This is like that time when [SPOILER]” and they never mark the comments with a spoiler warning or anything and they think it’s so funny when it isn’t. I guess humor is subjective and all but I’ve heard this joke SO MANY TIMES and I HATE IT. (I have a personal grudge against this kind of stuff because I was planning on playing the game blind and then got it ruined for me from a comment like this.)
@@the_basil_fang1rl Yeah, I stopped watching meme compilations because it’s just “Burgers on my mind” and “Ayo the pizzas here” over and over and over again. People on Twitter straight up doxxed the creator into hiding simply because of the OPTIONAL incest route that the game had (keep in mind the main characters' relationship with each other is toxic af and is clearly presented in that manner throughout the game) yet they don't even bat an eye at the fact that the game's main topics are Cannibalism, Murder, and Satantic Cultish Themes 🤦♀ Edit: Damn this comment aged like milk
… I hate people some how. It’s like saying the creators condone everything in the game. Like their bro sis entire relationship is MEANT to be seen as wrong! Haven’t finished watching the entire let’s play but I still had to comment.

My biggest problem with any fandom is when the psychotic side gets so damn loud, that the creators just start caving into the demands. More often than not, that tends to do more harm than good to any story. At that point, it’s like you’re no longer watching an original piece of work, but just pure fan service. It’s good to hear out what your fans have to say, because sometimes they can give some really good insight, but you shouldn’t let them write it for you.
One of the fandoms I was in had the lead writer leave, and the new writers have been giving in to a vocal and toxic part of the fanbase, and are now ACTIVELY UNDERMINING the writing, world building and characters the old writer put so much of his soul into just for the sake of being able to cram in a ship that is really clunky. It's not fully done yet but it worries me because this new canon involves breaking up a previous canon couple and it has a character that I really really like. And the direction the writing is going makes me worry that they could butcher that character to justify splitting the pairing off to force in the new one the fandom wants.
5:36 And on the other hand, thinking that shipping two men together at all ever always means that they don’t believe in close male friendships and are contributing to toxic masculinity. There needs to be a goddamn balance.
I saw so many people say that about Troy and Abed from Community which was frustrating because the show was constantly making jokes about them where the punchline essentially boiled down to "haha people think they're gay". You don't get to claim that fans are stigmatizing platonic male relationships when canon is doing it ten times more than any fan. My rule is: if a show makes a joke where the punchline is "haha they look gay", they're immediately gay for real.
Art theft is an issue in a couple of fandoms I’m in. There are way too many edits and other videos that use fan art but never properly credit the artists. Usually, the most credit (if you can even call it credit) I see people give to the artists is just a simple “this art isn’t mine” or “credits to the original artists” and it’s frustrating!
It's the infantilization of neurodivergent/disabled characters and the practically nonexistant asexual/aromantic characters anywhere despite every other gender/orientation headcanon under the sun. Ships are fun but I really don't care about reading about them much, so there are very few fics that actually interest me lol
it is a pain in the neck trying to find fics that don't obsess over shipping lol and yes, aroace characters are very rare, the only one i can think of is Alastor from hazbin hotel. but of course, people don't care that he's aroace because he's "hot" and insist on shipping him. which isn't totally harmful but it does kind feel like people don't respect asexuality sometimes.
@@paradoxtatorstudios9681 Oh yeah and whenever there's a canonically ace character people tend to just ignore it for shipping purposes. Feels rly bad as an ace myself
as a bsd and danganronpa fan, *inhales* - the ururaka affect (hating a female character for ‘getting in the way’ of a ship) -obsessing over headcanons and getting mad if you don’t agree -watering down all female characters to “girlboss” -watering down all complex male characters to “are they dom or sub in this mlm ship” -ignoring the main premise of the show in place of ships -infantilizing complex characters -ship fights. -ignoring all the bad things a character has done because of their backstory. -claiming a ship is “toxic” or a “proship” while simultaneously shipping a toxic ship -OBSESSING over lgbtq ships -misogyny.
The fact that half of these apply to the danganronpa fandom tells a lot about the fandom (especially the hate-the-fandom and the hate different games one)
I don't think I noticed this in any of my fandoms lately but I HATE IT when there's a book and a movie adaptation and then people who read the book act superior to those who only watched the movie. Honestly I usually always read the book and then maybe watch the movie but GOD DAMN let people do whatever the heck they want, it's the same damn story!
I usually say that the books are better but not everyone is capable of sitting down and reading for a long time. If someone still finds enjoyment of a book series through the adaptation, that’s fine by me. I’d still prefer if the adaptation was decently faithful
i notice this a lot with harry potter. im not saying theyre wrong, complain about it all you want if it did your favorite characters wrong, ive been there. but as someone who has only watched the movies and has no desire to read the books, its easy to feel inferior because you are constantly bombarded with stuff about how the books did this or that better.
it's the same damn story unless it's Upside Down Magic, where the plot and setting of the movie are very different and only like 4 characters are in both not counting Nory's dad
honestly my biggest gripe with some of the fandoms im in are that they're just way too big for their own good. for me the ideal fandom is like 5 people hyperfixating on the same thing and writing flashfics for each other. some of the comics i read are like that
For me it's what Scott Pilgrim fandom feels like. It was underground for years, but now I see so many people joining the fandom as new anime came out. But I slowly lose interest in being the part of the fandom as I'm fed up with people making content about new versions of the characters. I'm still glad the anime came out because it's fucking awesome
@@helenahildegarda5739 I took a break from TikTok for a few months and was so surprised to go back and see the amount of people with Scott Pilgrim profile pics. None from the comic, game, or movie tho- just the anime
My fandom pet peeves are: - People acting like an entire fandom is terrible based on a few bad actors, or, gasp- appealing to children??? (To be fair, anyone causing harm to others should be held accountable, and some fan spaces do hold up negative societal ideals more than others, but writing off an entire community isn't fair given how large and varied it can be). - The majority of fans only focusing on how hot a certain character is (which is fine, but but it makes discussion hella boring). - People getting pissed at those headcanoning a character as being part of a marginalized group. You don't have to agree with the headcanon, but getting that angry implies that people who are part of those groups don't belong in fandom unless they can justify their inclusion, which isn't fair.
I'm currently writing a long fanfic, took me two years to write and will probably take me another one to finish. The creators of the canon were very invested with their fans, and it was really a delight to be in that fandom. Turns out one of the creator recently got a lot of accusations of grooming, and this just totally sucked my enjoyement out of that fanfic. I know what I write is totally disconnected to the source material, but as a new father, I just can't bring my heart to continue. I'll finish it because I respect my readers a lot, they have been following me for so long and left so many wholesome comments. But that'll be my last fanfic in this fandom.
I absolutely get it. Im in the midst of a fanfic series I’ve been working on for a couple of years and won’t finish for another few months, and a few months ago I learned that one of the fairly relevant characters (It’s RPF, so a real person) is an abuser. I had to retcon him out of the story immediately because I felt so wrong about continuing to write that character. It may have cut a story arc short, but I’d rather do that than continue representing that person. Ironically, the person was an abuser in my plot too, though working towards reform.
DreamSMP, I don't even really need to get into detail: The bad side of the community not the good side, I absolutely love the fanart animation and fanfiction I even write some myself. Just the fact people forget these are real people and can get uncomfortable, also the fact people blame the creator for their characters actions.
Was searching for this comment, yep. Not as much DSMP as just the creators surrounding it (the good ones), but definitely with the fanart/fiction thing. They forget it’s real people.
The fanfics for DSMP were sooo good I sometimes wish I didn’t fall out of interest :(( I’m vaguely interested in QSMP but I’m not really sure what it’s about or where to start with it
the coffee thing at the beginning is so true, it's odd how you can have a character mention liking a food (not even it being their favorite, just saying they enjoy it) literally once and then people act like all the character eats is that food lmao. i'm into mlp (yeah, i know) and it's happened to two seperate characters, there's this one character who's supposed to be a villain, and at one point she mentions taco tuesday, and it's not even supposed to be "she loves tacos so much!!" and more like "haha, she's a villain but she's more focused on food, isn't she so silly?" but now every single thing i see involving this character has tacos somewhere in it lmao.
This happened sometimes in Creepypasta fandom with the ticci toby guy with waffles and Masky with cheesecake And the worst part of it, since they ruined the mh characters more than I'd like to know, is that the cheesecake thing came from a fatphobic joke against Masky's actor from marble hornets, who got affected to the point that Troy(One of the Directors) had to deactivate the comment section of the main channel Not to mention more about this fandom, which I hate with a passion nowadays
I absolutely hate when a fandom gets too popular and you can't be a part of it anymore because it's too embarrassing. Wednesday is a good example. Suddenly there were thousand of 13y/o who were trying to be like her. And as much as I love her, Wednesday Addams is not a good role model. She's toxic, problematical and does not treat the people around her very well. As a character she's great but I really don't want to meet her in real life. I wish all the young fans could se that.
I wouldn’t consider myself one of those people that look up to Wednesday as a role model and try to imitate their actions, but when I watched Wednesday I never really saw her as toxic or problematic. Granted she definitely made some mistakes (Piranhas are a bit much), and it’s been a while since I’ve seen the show so maybe I’m forgetting something important, but you’ve peaked my curiosity. Why do you think Wednesday is a bad person?
I'll start off by saying that I'm not going to excuse what these teens are doing, but it's really just a matter of kids at that age interacting with media that they like in order to try and formulate an understanding of the world and their place in it. While many teens will gravitate towards the "good" role models, there are some who don't quite understand why some characters are toxic because they see them as someone who seems really cool because of media representation or fandom representation. One day they will see what you see, but it's best to just ignore them and let them do their teenager thing.
I *hated* this version of Wednesday. She has forced mommy issues in order to be “relatable” to teens, even though there are teens that are close to their mothers, she treated Enid horribly because of her interest in color, she broke school rules in order to solve a mystery, (in which Wednesday’s character would never do, because why would she even care if there was a monster killing people? This is the same girl that tried to kill boys by stupidly putting piranhas in chlorine water) she got her friends in danger several times, and is overall an incredibly toxic person who should not be shipped with Enid. She *never* got punished for her actions, and she never even got proper character development, she just randomly hugs Enid in order for the audience to like her. The writers clearly based this version off of Shadow the Hedgehog, because she constantly says the most edgiest things to show you how she’s “not like other girls”. What also peeves me is that they stripped Pugsley of his character and made him weak in order to prop up Wednesday, they also changed Morticia to where she wants her daughter to be a housewife, in which the other Morticias (besides the 3D one) would NEVER force her daughter to be anything she didn’t want to be, and they removed Gomez’s charming personality, he’s basically a mob boss at this point. It’s a relief they didn’t screw up Gomez and Morticia’s relationship. The only character they didn’t screw up was Thing (and probably Fester, although he wouldn’t have favorites). This was all because they obviously wanted a “feminist version” of Addams Family, when Wednesday herself isn’t even interesting. Nevermore is catered to her gothic aesthetic, and the only person that really stands out is Enid. She painted her window, she loves color, and she’s really bubbly and optimistic. Not to mention, why are people afraid of Wednesday when she isn’t a monster? Bianca is a siren, Ajax is a Gorgon, Enid is a werewolf, Tyler is the Hyde and Eugene can control bees. Wednesday can only see into the future as long as she can touch someone. They can all kill her if they wanted to. This show is a copy of Monster High and Harry Potter with the Addams Family IP slapped onto the title in order for people to watch. This trash fire was so bad that even Tim Burton HIMSELF gave up after directing half the season. It’s sad how Tim, the man that directed Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, and other great movies, stooped this low for a generic teen show that’s a major insult to Charles Addams and his characters. Since this show was garbage, I decided to rewrite it. Wednesday is homesick, but standoffish because she doesn’t want to bond with people in Moorholm Academy (I changed it) because she would have to leave them once the school year is over. Enid is a werecat with bangs and glasses who was adopted by werewolves, but was treated like an outcast due to her being a different species. Ajax is a Naga (half snake, half human), who is seen as a snobbish person because of his mother (I changed his personality), but is actually a big dork and loves Enid because of her personality. I’ve brought back Joel, and he’s in Moorholm because it’s known for being one of the top academies for great academic perfomances. He likes Wednesday because of her creepiness, and Wednesday likes him because he’s accepting and humble. It’s gonna be more of a slice of life story.
@t1mburt0nsdandruff You have some pretty valid points. I mean tbf Enid was a pretty useless werewolf at first. And don't forget Xavier who can literally turn his drawings to life. They could probably kill the whole school if he wanted to. It just really doesn't make sense they were all scared of her (although it might have been more like intimidation. ) Your story also sounds cool!
Tbh the safest, nicest and probably one of the best fandoms I’ve ever been apart of is Wings of Fire. Not only is the series and author themself just amazing, theres not a lot of bad people (at least as far as I know), not many weird ships/pairings, sexualizing or ruining characters is incredibly uncommon and there’s not even that much drama. In all honestly, the biggest problem our fandom has faced so far happended two years ago (the Trixity event), and that technically wasn’t even apart of the “actual” fandom itself. So yeah, come read the Wings of Fire series and join our fandom. It’s great.
my god the trixity situation. immediately became old woman with 34 diseases on her death bed as soon as you reminded me that it happened two whole ass years ago
the only time i’ll forgive the “the fans hate the source material” thing is in the miraculous ladybug fandom as it’s mainly fics and the actual source material has some redeeming moments that are worth the absolute garbage main character’s cringy, borderline stalker-ish behaviour
So my few pet peeves are 1) when fandoms give fetishy lgbt+ headcanons and claim it's to give representation 2) race swapping characters while ignoring bipoc characters that do exist 3) Over sexaulizing ships where the characters are minors 4) Bashing female characters because they get in the way of their ships
First one and fourth one happens so much with mlm ships and I hate it. I think it's okay if you're more comfortable with shipping same gender characters(as long as it's not simply because it just turns you on), but please, stay respectful to characters that have done nothing wrong to you. It was a common problem in MHA and in genshin's fandom it's the other way around with wlw ships I've noticed something similar to your first one happening, where people claim transfem characters to be femboys. I mean, I don't mind if you see them that way, but most of the times it's just straight up disrespect to prove that their character is just a confused boy in dress, and I don't really understand why.
@@whoevencares123 God don't get me started on how Fujos do that shit. Like we have a character that's supposed to be a trans girl and a lesbian they're like "UwU soft gay trans femboy".
I'm a big mlm/yaoi shipper (not exclusively by any means) and fic writer but god damn do I hate number 4 with a passion. People get so unreasonably angry towards any female characters who are/could be in a relationship with a main character. If they want to write their own stories where they erase, kill or maim them so their headcanon can be together, that's fine with me, you do you. But don't bring the negativity into the general fandom or even our into the real world, against real actors/VAs/creators. There's also just general misogyny there. I haven't been active in any fandom for a while. I do kind of miss it sometimes, but it feels harder for me to jump in. Part of that is definitely the drama. Sometimes I see characters that I'm itching to ship but then I hear about common infighting and judgement and weird ideas and I lose all interest. The Reylo fandom sounds like something I would have legitimately loved to be a part of but I got depressed from the general hate The Last Jedi and Rey got, so I kinda gave up on Star Wars all together. I know I'm letting the hate win, but I've gotta think about my mental health first.
@@imaginekudryavka9485 personally more of a wlw shipper. But just the overall misogyny from the crazy mlm shippers just makes me avoid those parts in general. Like I remember reading a fic where the author had the fem canon love interest get SAed and murdered as punishment for keeping their ship apart and just like laughed about in story and have even the characters say she deserved it.
The absolute animosity between newcomers, veterans, and those who are in-between. I've loved this media since I was three years old, and being almost thirty now, I can point out flaws with every bit of every version of said media, yet veterans will adamantly say that anything new is bad, and everything old should be praised like there's nothing wrong with it. Newcomers can get absolutely bashed by the veterans for liking the new content and sometimes not knowing about the old content, and in-between people get it even worse cause despite their love, they point out flaws with each part. I should know, cause I'm in-between.
I’m a veteran to my main fandom, Warrior Cats, having been here for 9 years this year. Personally, I enjoy the newer content, honestly more than a lot of the older content. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have flaws, but tbh people should be allowed to enjoy things in spite of their flaws. Yeah, if you want to point them out that’s fine, but people shouldn’t be shamed for liking something because it’s flawed. And it also makes me happy seeing newcomers to the fandom, even if they don’t know very much yet, I’m glad that younger kids are going to have the same fun experience I had growing up with Warriors, and that the fandom is still active and growing :)
Its because oversaturization. Ship fics and romance are very popular so poeple who arent as into reading it get annoyed that its all poeple focus on. I woukd know Im one of those poeple.
There are so many messed up characters, and that is the beauty of them. Which is why I hate it when characters that are meant to be evil/crazy are made out to be completely harmless, soft and when people go "They did nothing wrong!"
I've been in a lot of fandoms over the years, each with their own issues but one that seems to follow me everywhere is how often character nuances are completely and utterly ignored, often simplified to the point that the character doesn't feel the same at all anymore. I love complex characters and I've read a good handful of fics that not only maintain that complexity but enhance it, but it's so few and far between
A few issues I have with some fandoms I’m in: * One ship getting so much undying love that half the posts on Tumblr are just uwu soft moments between the two characters, stripped of a lot of what makes both the characters and the ship itself appealing, as if the ship being together is the only thing that matters about either * Acting like it’s not unreasonable to demand a game do more than the system it was made for can handle and generally expecting more work to be done better in less than half the time * Hating characters for being “pedophiles” for having crushes on teenagers, regardless of whether or not the character in question is also a teenager (Which they are more often than you might expect, sometimes even being younger than their crush)
A couple more: * Treating the good guys as irredeemably evil and the bad guys as the real heroes for reasons like “The protagonist fought them!” (because they were an invading military force) or “He can’t be a good guy if he MADE the robots! The other guy’s completely innocent!” (when the robots were built for labor, and the “innocent” guy kidnapped and reprogrammed them into terrorists) * My favorite character having his entire life in fan fiction revolve around his undying loyalty to his original boss who, in his debut, he got sick of working for and proceeded to never acknowledge the existence of again, completely ignoring his amusing quirks and unique-for-the-series ability to play people like fiddles.
Oooh boy, this is a hot take. . . so I totally get the push for platonic content because 99% of the time I don’t like any of the ships in a given fandom. That said, my 1% exception is always a small background ship. Any time I ever publicly bring up those ships I always get told that not everything needs to be romantic and I have to sit there like :(??? Let people enjoy themselves how they want to! (Unless it’s harmful ofc) Not only do fanfic writers not get paid, but also those comments I receive always come off as hypocritical
i personally just find shipping annoying and convoluted, but yes, people should be allowed to enjoy themselves.. unless the ship is harmful, they're pushing their ship on others, or constantly fighting with people who don't agree with them. which sadly, is what i often see, so the people who just want to ship quietly in peace get shoved in with the weirdos.
Yep. People are allowed to dislike shipping, but it's so annoying when you can't ship anything without some people going: "WHY ARE WE DEVALUING FRIENDSHIP? IS PLATONIC LOVE NOT REAL ANYMORE?" like bro chill I'm shipping these fictional characters because it's fun, it's not that deep
@@sophitiaofhyrule either extreme can be aggravating as hell, but it comes down to the people on either side starting wars just because people don't share the same opinion 💀
A thing I hate about my newest fandom is people taking things too seriously. Like hating characters for little to no reason, having freak outs over characters and attacking the writers over how they wrote a character or episode a certain way. Thankfully this side is a minority, less prominent than other fandoms and mainly on twitter and tik tok but it has gotten to a point where you just can’t ignore it.
@@AdorableFennec It’s not hazbin, It’s the object show community, still have no idea how a bunch of cartoon objects managed to make people go that crazy.
@@AdorableFennec yea it sucks that these unhinged fans make the community look bad when in reality most of them are chill people and are very creative.
I have a couple… FNAF - I stepped back from the fandom after being hyperfocused on it for almost a decade and realized how weird they treat Scott Cawthon. They put him on some weird high pedestal that’s not allowed to be touched… they treat him like some soft little boy who cries when given any form of criticism, but in reality it’s some 50 year old millionaire. The fandom is borderline parasocial towards the damn man. I made a small joke about fnaf sb for it straying from the original plotline and the lore being badly written, to which I proceedingly got told to off myself by HUNDREDS of people. I wish I was joking. (pssst, big edit incoming; I also got told I was a “fake new fan” by hundreds of other people for criticizing the fnaf game lore and writing. They dug their feet deeper by saying I should “shut up and accept that stories can change.” Or the nicer fans telling me that “it got retconned so accept it, you dumbass!” after I told them I was a fan since fnaf 1 released, and was upset of the massive unnecessary lore/genre retcon Scott did. They genuinely cannot comprehend someone criticizing something while simultaneously being a fan of it. Apparently, to them, critiquing something automatically means you hate it. Granted, I literally have a whole essay on why I don’t like any of the new fnaf games and I also criticize many fan behaviors in it lolol) The fnaf fandom is such a damn crybaby, they can’t even take a small joke over how infamously bad the writing is. If I could tell every fnaf fan one thing, it’d be this; you can acknowledge something is badly written and still enjoy it. Undertale - I like to call this one Papyrus Syndrome/The Papyrus Effect; the infantilization of any character who displays any autistic/naive/socially awkward traits. Can’t stand it. The fandom also turned every UT character into a caricature of what they canonically are; making them into one dimensional beings and ignoring the extremely well thought-out personalities each UT character has. Also what they did to Sans, which makes me bring up the caricature point again, where they made him into the stereotypical depressed, edgy manlet instead of the calculated genius he is. This is my own little rant; I’ve never seen anyone bring it up, but Sans and his beliefs feel inspired from Zelda’s Majoras Mask, lol. Especially knowing Toby loves Nintendo. I actually get sad thinking about how nobody really focuses on Sans existentialism and how much it reflects a lot of iconic games. I would literally kill to see an interaction between Sans and Happy Mask Salesman. Unfortunate, truly.
Gonna toss my two cents in: 1. FNAF fans are typically very animalistic, unfortunately. On one hand, they attack each other over SB as if there aren't valid reasons to both dislike it AND like it. (The way I see it, while it definitely had issues on launch, and what it omitted is disappointing, I personally think it's a far better game than people seem to insist. Perfect? By no means. Complete garbage? _By no means.)_ On the other hand, that same harassment goes to theories. If a person doesn't fully like your theory, suddenly you deserve to die. It sucks. 2. My interpretation of Sans (rather, I guess a theory) isn't that he's even existential or anything. He's likely not omniscient in the slightest. Otherwise, he'd not only change up his attacks *per attack,* not only attempt to kill you the second you reload your save, but also would recognize from as early as Snowdin that you're killing people, _and Toriel,_ and wouldn't hesitate to kill you on the spot. What I think is going on is that he still gets the same deja vu everyone else does, but is able to make use of it because he's demonstrated he's really, _really, REALLY_ good at reading expressions. May I remind you, at every point in the game, your face is always (-_-). His ability to read *THAT* speaks volumes about his skills.
I agree with you on everything here (the papyrus effect also happens in the welcome home fandom-honestly wally’s autistic not five) but sans doesn’t canonically remember resets, which is why he reads our facial expression and does the secret code thing (but yeah, if you’re going to give this man the secrets of the universe you should make him have a crisis about it).
@@bababooey5402 I completely agree on both things you said! For fnaf, I actually have a love-hate relationship with security breach. I loved the characters, and the story was pretty ok for Scott’s doing! However, it was not a good FNAF game. One of the main things I said back when I was getting my ass blasted by fnaf fanatics was the fact that you can’t switch a games entire genre (horror -> sci-fi) and pass it up as some small retcon. That’s when I got told to off myself LMAOO I also acknowledge that Sans has no memory of resets, or even knows about its existence in general. I love his dialogue in genocide because of how “so close yet so far” his idea is of what we are. Ultimately, I think his geno dialogue is one of the most interesting parts of the game. I honestly thought he was going to have some “fourth wall break! Gotcha, I actually knew we were stuck in a game all along!” spiel but it didn’t, and I’m so happy it didn’t turn up that way. Sans is literally experiencing horror-beyond-human/(monster)-comprehension 😭
I’m not super involved with FNaF so I’m not caught up with all the info but could u tell me what the retcon was? I saw you mention the genre shift but could u elaborate on that pls bc this is the first I’ve heard of that
@@elokin300yeah, of course! I love having these convos lol Retcon - (in a film, television series, or other fictional work) a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events, typically used to facilitate a dramatic plot shift or account for an inconsistency. SPOILER! But the genre shift happened due to Scott going back on his word and saying the books are now canon to the games, despite him stating that the books are in their own separate universe. His books are not really horror, they rather focus on futuristic scifi with thriller; advanced AI taking over humanity, unexplained scientific discoveries, time travel, breaking physics, etc… it officially changed the fnaf games as a whole when the mimic (a book character who is not possessed, but just advanced AI) was shown to be a main villain in security breach. And also that Cassie can walk through walls/teleport/break physics ?? But that was never really explained. Imo, I think him retconning was a lazy attempt to cover up any major plotholes in the game, because now people can just say “the series was retconned so *insert major plothole* no longer matters.” I’m really not joking or strawmanning, that is an actual response I’ve received - from a multitude of fans - when bringing up plotholes and flaws in the series. But hey, it’s ultimately up to your interpretation 😁👍
3:50 As a Danganronpa fan, I know how you feel. I literally find the villain of that to be one of, if not THE most evil character in fiction, PERIOD. Yet half of the fandom is like "But she's hot!" She's an amazing villain, but I would legitimately rather spend a day locked in a room with EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF BATMAN'S ROUGES GALLERY ALL TRYING TO KILL ME than her!
I have the same feeling, but with one specific antagonist of one of the games. He really did many evil and bad things, even when he has an trqgic backstory are still bad, but the fandom just says, what good of a guy he is and that he did nothing wrong. I find it very frustrating to consume any fanart or work of fiction, were he might show up, when the entire fanclub of that guy us around the corner just to hail and praise him for what a angelboy he is
Tag smut as smut. Please. I'm begging you. I don't want to be filtering through the platonic tag and find smut. I've clicked a couple fics that have no indication in the tags that there will be smut and yet be the nastiest, most horny fics ever. I have no problem with smut, I will read it on occasion, but I don't want to click on a found family fic and find that it's all smut because of poor tagging. I just want my fluffy cutesy fics too 😭
Expanding on this: not rating a smut fic as explicit. I'll be half way through filtering and run into more smut tags that passed through my filter due to being so oddly specific
If you're using Ao3, use the filters to remove fics that aren't rated G or T, depending on what you're looking for. Smut is usually rated E or M. If the fic says "user chose not to rate" or something like that, check the tags, because they'll usually tag what's going on. Also, many fandoms have a specific smut tag for their fandom, so check if yours has one and you could filter that tag too!
@@Nakia11798 but this is what I mean, they don't tag as smut hardly at all in this fandom. A lot of the time they don't use the E or M rating, and I can't just check the tags for what's going on because this fandom is big on "tags ruin surprises". I'm thinking I should go to another fandom or write my own if I want certain fics and leave this fandom for at 3am when I don't care what smut I'm reading.
Big mistagging errors in ao3 (and in other fandom websites) are a big gripe for me as well. this is something I noticed more in fandoms with younger audience: where there are folks that haven't learnt the tagging system... and some that don't even bother to learn it, which stinks, cause the filters count consistent use of tags. Not to mention, using the correct rating in those fandoms is even more important than it already is.
Expanding further on this: tagging platonic relationships as romantic and the other way around, also not tagging important messy tags and warnings such as non-con and even without using "author chose not to ese archive warnings" warning.
The history community, a few people and I literally got harassed for thinking a historical figure wasn’t attractive. Plus people will get upset if you like an “ugly” historical figure, like the reason why people like history is because of their accomplishments and not their looks.
Some (a small amount but it’s still out there) of the most literally homophobic people known to man are in my fandom even though like half the characters are confirmed lgbt-
ISTG it's like that in the Welcome Home fandom too. Had to tell someone who was being a homophobe straight up like "Dude, two of the characters are canonically gay for each other"
fuck that’s literally the transformers fandom 😭😭 you’d think something with trans literally in the name would have a more accepting fan base but I guess not??
I don’t really consider myself in the fandom but i used to be exposed to it a lot through stuff like youtube reccomendations, and it was so extremely annoying how people would not shut up about the bad things like how some people like a really inappropriate ship, when they could be talking about actually interesting things, like people are obsessed with needing something to hate
I feel like this is a problem in a lot of fandoms nowadays and it genuinely makes me sad 😭 it feels like everyone just wants to bash the media to the point it’s hard to find people who actually enjoy it in my own fandom
the ship warsssss you can’t love a ship without being bashed. you just can’t. and if you don’t ship, you’re constantly being “converted” by everyone. or just called basic and boring. and then people think if you do ship something, you make it your whole personality. no… I just like the ship. I am not obsessed with the ship.
I've come to realize that I've never actually been immersed in a fandom before. I'm a fan of many things of course, but i've never actually jumped into the discourse and expressed my thoughts. But......hearing some of these comments, I'm thinking that may have been for the best.
Same. I've always just kept my interests to myself. But on the other hand, I love the idea of discussing the content I enjoy with other people who also enjoy it as much as I do (just in a sane and mature way please!)
i do enjoy talking with people who are fans of what i enjoy to (i mostly stick to smaller fandoms so there isn't nearly as many problems) but sometimes something happens that everyone just gets roped into without consent, like you just wanna talk about if the comedian or the gorilla is more fun to play as but then everyone starts panicking over the scientist being racist
Yeah, I try my best to stay out of fandoms in this way. I interact with it, but the last fandom that I was a part of was heavily saturated by chronically online teenagers, and it was just far too difficult for me to enjoy the actual media while also interacting with other people in the fandom.
A few of my fandoms that have a big part that just despise shipping, it's mostly on the Reddit and TH-cam sides, like, they'll either not ship anyone that isn't canon, or ship something Ironically, but then there's me, a person that likes watching their fictional Skrunklys make out and cuddle, I don't care if it's not Gonna be canon, I need my 5000 word one shot fluff hurt/comfort with them before I sleep, they're my fictional little Skrunklys and I like seeing them happy/sad.
One of my least favourite things is the people that get angry at people’s headcanons. I mean, yeah, I don’t have the headcanon that this character is trans, but some people do, and I’m okay with that. The fanart people make is really well done and doesn’t directly affect anyone negatively, and I’ve even read a fic where the character IS trans and it just made really good plot points! If you don’t like the headcanon, don’t use it- but please don’t be rude to people who do.
Honestly I think this is a symptom of trans headcanons are often 1) Some one fetishizing trans people (mostly trans guys in alot of fandoms) 2) people who have that mind set of "if you don't say my hc is canon then you're a bigot" That said as long as you're not a creep, being an ass and harassing people over it, then headcanon what you want
@@GraveyardMaiden Exactlyyy. I think that if someone only makes the hc to fetishize trans people, the fandom can get mad. Especially since the character I was referring to earlier is young. If people are just fetishizing trans people, then people who dislike it are justified.
As an owl house fan I just wish everyone would calm down about its cancellation. Like I get it but for example when it was announced P and F was getting revived the literal first comment I saw was “they’d rather cling to a 15 year old show than finish the owl house”
the worst part about one of my fandoms is that there isn't enough fanart or fanfics about my two favs 😭😭😭 i haven't seen ONE fanfiction with one of these two as the main character or specifically about them they're always side characters who are barely even there :(
I’m in a fandom where one ship- the most popular one, mind you- is so unbelievably sexualized to the point where I can’t look up fan fictions without being absolutely blasted by the most unholy “find god” part of the internet. The sheer amount of omegaverse is extremely concerning
@@epiclyepicguy At a guess, I'd say Star Wars. They didn't explain much, but it sounds like Star Wars from what little they did explain. Which is disappointing because when I look for Star Wars stories I don't even want anything to do with that era of the timeline.
For me I'd have to say people missing the nuance of characters and boiling them down to something very shallow which is a shame because the characters are really well written. Luckily I don't encounter it more than occasionally because I purposefully avoid that part of the fandom
1:05 I used to be like this when I was a baby on Wattpad, but as I got older and wrote my own novel, I realized it was a way for the writer to process their own trauma.
My main fandom is Five Nights at Freddy's and there is so much wrong with this fandom. From gross weird ships, putting the franchise and Scott on a pedestal, the downright hatered for the new stuff, hating on someone's own interpretation of the timeline and lore if it doesn't fit their idea, ect :/
Also, there's the people who treat fan theories as canon facts even if there's no confirmation or even if they have been blatantly debunked. This is also a problem with many other fandoms, like how even in the Super Mario fanbase there's people who think Jumpman is Mario's father, even though he is obviously Mario himself.
I heard the FNAF fandom was getting pressed about Poppy Playtime Chapter 3 having a yellow chicken character in it. I don’t get it, FNAF did not create the yellow chicken it’s been done so many times in so many cartoons that came before FNAF. Why are they mad?
When ppl lose it at AroAce headcannons. People hate when you insinuate that their fav character doesn’t like sex. The over sexualisation of canon asexual characters too (Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, Jon from The Magnus Archives, Lilith from The Owl House, etc)
For me the problem comes when they try to justify it with "it's a spectrum" no you don't need to find an excuse for your ship. You should just accept that these characters will only be a couple in fanon. Also people who bully people for shipping such characters with someone because they are AroAce is also an a-hole move to do.
For me the worst part is the hypocrisy. People saying that a certain ship is bad because they view it as romantic. Like you can't claim that you hate shipping because you don't like the headcannon, and then turn around and claim your headcannon is right. I think someone can ship or not ship, without needing to give a reason. Isn't that the beauty of fanfictions? idk. I just find it holier then thou when people complain about characters they view as friends being shipped, and vice versa. Its the same coin, with different sides.
The constant hatred for this one character in my fandom. They're very VERY divided on how people feel about them. On the subreddit for the game I asked whats their personal favorite playthrough of a game and I got a cute response about how their fav was their first time playing it. The only other response was about how their fav playthrough is the playthrough which and I quote "where gets hit in the face, slapped, eyes g0uged out and their c0rpse incinerated". Like I get hating a character and yes 3 of those can happen in a single playthrough (you can only have the eyes or the incinerated since its how they die) but like wtf. I don't hear ANYONE talking this way about any of the other characters. (If you're curious I'm talking about Ashley from Until Dawn)
One thing I disliked in the Deltarune fandom when chapter two was pretty new, aside from the misgendering of Kris because they/them apparently aren't valid as a character's preferred pronouns (and I think this really toned down after all this time which is nice) is something I would call "toby said in an interview" which means that someone got a supposed game fact from someone else's comment who probably also got it from someone else who said that Deltarune's creator said it in an interview, but they don't have actual prove for it, let alone the interview itself. That or a variation where they are super sure something happened in game, when it never did.
I have a feeling that Kris got misgendered a lot because Frisk and Chara used they/them but it was up to your interpretation on what gender they are (if I am wrong about Frisk and Chara please tell me) and people assumed that also went for Kris
Fun fact! The “Toby said it in an interview” thing is STILL being used to misgender frisk and chara because they’re “self inserts” despite the fact that they both canon likes and dislikes and the fact that there are OTHER canon nonbinary characters in these games! And they also get misgendered (napstablook does not use he/him)! AND the entire Point of kris is that they are not us, that is literally the main plot (or at least the main subplot) of the game! (These exclamation points indicate seething rage)
@@descrates3545 I'll quote a TH-camr Here and say that "Undertale wants raw game on Player contact" which is the reason why Frisk is technically a little more than a bland vessel for the player to project onto, and Chara as well to an extend, so I understand the "Up to interpretation" argument a bit better here. Though at the end of Undertale it is made clear that Chara and Frisk are their own people, so their pronouns really are they/them and not the player's (unless the player also goes by they/them). But yes, I agree that that's likely a reason why so many people misgendered Kris.
(my fandom is the OSC) first of all: the same noncanon traits and overexaggerated personalities for some characters being SO POPULAR. i don't need tumblr sexyman (sexywoman?) lollipop for the 2763rd time. and second of all: the crazy amount of people in this fandom that passionately hate shipping. they'll just be like "uhm but they're just objects!!" to every piece of cute fanart they see. no they are NOT "just objects," *TIMOTHY,* THEY ARE OBJECTS WHO TALK AND WALK AROUND AND HAVE FRIENDSHIPS AND RIVALRIES AND EMOTIONS AND INTELLIGENCE (UNLIKE YOU) AND WHO WOULD MOST LIKELY ALSO HAVE ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS.
I have grown to despise the term “cinnamon roll” for this reason.

I love how in a fandom I'm in, it's the opposite. We keep making angst out of even the smallest hint of lore.
I hate that many fandoms don't seem to understand what Friendship is. If two characters are nice to each other or spend any amount time alone together, it has to be because "they're in a relationship."
*coughs in sonic and tails*

Sorry for the long comment, as someone who has been in the sonic fandom since they were little and also find sonic and tails’ brotherly bond wholesome… this really grinds my gears.

@mtlaura271 I'm pretty sure I know exactly who you mean, and you're right. He was a very complicated character who messed with everyone's heads and yet the fandom just... ignores all that and focuses on a few teasing lines of dialogue. Like it’s fine for kids to be within a fandom, but I want to surround myself with people my age.
Is it inappropriate?’
And yeah, part of it is just wanting to hear the opinions of other adults rather than kids. You know how there’s always that argument of ‘You’re judging this too hard, it’s a kids show so it needs to be simplified for kids?’ I think the reverse can also be true where a younger audience can miss important details of a piece of media because they focus on some details way more than others.

the "people treating headcanons as canon" part is too real
I was in a fandom once where some people did that then started harassing people because they like a character who is "evil" in their headcanon
Fr dude
I’m gay and all but I hate when ppl think they’re so right about their gay hc on a character, like when someone ships that character with a girl they’re like “how could you” even though the character was never explicitly gay and is implied to like all genders in fact
I see this a lot with "Azula was abused" and "Chara isn't evil"
just because it pisses people off, I treat "Dumbledore is gay" the same way.
I don't care what the creators say after the work is published. Show me where it's stated in the actual work, or it's not canon.
“alan becker’s stick figures are siblings!1!1!1!1!” what.
It's okay dude you can say Undertale/joking
What i will call the "Papyrus effect" it's not fandom-specific but it's when the fandom takes a character that isn’t a child, but has a childish personality and infantalizes them and uses it as a reason to hate on any ships or nsfw of sed character. This is especially troublesome when the character is either canonically neurodivergent or neurodivergent-coded
yellow guy from dhmis, even tho i'll probably hate any sexualized content about him, the fandom treat him as a 8 years old when he's canonically as old as the other puppets.
@@elsnasdragonnet6959 huh, i thought he was supposed to be a kid i didn't know that.
@@TheLastBlenderBender nope, he gets married in the second season, I think he's canonically in his forties.

My characters are literally just ambiguously (adoptive) brothers, friends, or romantic partners.
Fr like, guys, men and women can be friends without kissing.
TADC?
Yeah and whenever two characters that are the same gender are best friends they're automatically seen as gay because they really care each other so that must mean that they love each other too in a romantic way
Omori fandom when they learn about the concept of a "best friend":
As an aro ace, it is incredibly frustrating when most of my fandom seems to revolve around ships/love interests. Don’t get me wrong, I think the ships are cute, but there is many other concepts in the media that could be expanded on..
As a fellow aro ace, I completely agree with you. WHY IS SEX ONE OF THE ONLY THINGS PEOPLE WRITE ABOUT. I just don't get it
I hate how platonic "character & reader" fics are so unpopular compared to romance or smut fics. And the ones that do exist are either super short or just aren't very exciting.
I'm also scared of ever headcanoning a character as aroace... Especially if it's a good-looking character. I'm afraid the shippers/simps will kill me
I just write a close friendship and tag it as romantic.
I feel the same way, also when they headcanon neurodivergent characters as asexual, it just reeks of infantilization ngl
Tim Burton is autistic who was married and had kids. Wait until those people hear about that.
Autistic people, like myself, aren’t dumb children. I know how babies are made, I want to be married, and I have some childish traits, but I am not a mindless baby.

Yellow guy DHMIS (kind of understandable in a way concidering he is a children’s show character.
Papyrus undertale (stop it)
also the infantilization of male characters. most fandoms I've been in have this problem where they'll love the boy and hate the girl despite the fact that they're basically the same age and both have comparable backstories. any time the girl is badass or fighting - she's awful and ruthless and completely inexcusable but when the boy is fighting he's "doing what he has to" or is empowering or deserves to let off this anger. when the girls having an emotional moment she's a cry baby or too sensitive and any sort of integrity she had as a character is completely stripped away cuz she sucks now but when its the boy - its a dramatic and heart warming moment that only deepens his character. when the girl says something funny she's trying too hard but when the boy says something funny he's a silly little precious uwu baby boy who needs to be protected. you get what i mean but I just hate the exaggeration
ah the double standard
It's the misogyny for me- but seriously, I've seen it too, if a girl does something bad, they'll get scrutinized way harder than boys do.
*cough* Miraculous
i dont think miraculous counts here seeing as how marionette is like. a literal stalker. so theres a pretty good reason to hate her
@@m00npie-333 I think they're referring to the fact that none of her stalker behavior gets condemned.
First point makes me think of Papyrus from Undertale
My primary example is how Fanon Papyrus hates puns just because Cannon Papyrus got upset when sans joked around instead of working.

I honestly like Miles better than Peter.

Yeah, Beep-0, I _wonder_ why something that has been fossilised for Grambe-knows how many years would attack a group of complete strangers standing in front of it after suddenly regaining life…
Wait, people actually break up their friendships because of the blue shell?
I thought it was a joke.
@@Ammiteur9 Eh, Idk. At this point, I kinda doubt it’s a joke. Mario Party fans say the exact same thing about Chance Time. :’)

Happens with a fandom I'm in too, like the characters and story's setting exists but they still change it?!??!
ugh this happens so much with Genshin and Project Sekai, atleast in my biggest Fandom, Star Wars that doesn't happen.
I’m always conflicted on that issue because most of the times it’s just a useless, kinda racist addition, but I have some passes to it like April O’ Neil from TMNT. And I just wonder where or if there’s a line to draw here, or if I’m just being hypocritical
For me many things
- Romanticization of villains
- The divide between pro/anti liking characters romantically/sexually
- You will get harassed based on your tastes, especially if you like an unpopular character or hate a popular one
idk what fandom this is but from what i've seen in mine (which is not much) yeah i get harassed for hating Johnny Cage and being down bad x100 for the gunslinger
It's BFB?

Or they don't act neurotypical enough, so they're neurodivent
Reminds me of sans aus fanfics lol
Ron the Death Eater is still something we haven't escaped from

And again, there are ways to make it work, they just aren’t gonna happen in an edgy wish fulfillment Drarry fic.

Mine is with ships tbh. A lot of people are too hardcore shippers to even take another opinion. Thankfully, haven't found many people who are like that, but a fair few get really defensive and toxic when someone likes a different ship or says they kinda dislike the ship
Especially on Reddit. I tried being on there and I got bullied off the platform for liking a different ship 😭
Bear in mind that the people with the strongest opinions generally shout the loudest, so there are probably less of them than you think :3
this with destiel years ago i said "you can ship destiel all you want but don't bring it up to jensen ackles"

You poor soul
@@crackerjack0349 fr.
The fandom is killing me but the brainrot keeps me around
The fact that I knew you were talking about rwby the moment you mentioned 9th volume

That first few lines remind me of the Reylo affair.
Rey should have either been with Finn or not had a romance at all.

It's the infantilization of neurodivergent/disabled characters and the practically nonexistant asexual/aromantic characters anywhere despite every other gender/orientation headcanon under the sun. it is a pain in the neck trying to find fics that don't obsess over shipping lol
and yes, aroace characters are very rare, the only one i can think of is Alastor from hazbin hotel. but of course, people don't care that he's aroace because he's "hot" and insist on shipping him. which isn't totally harmful but it does kind feel like people don't respect asexuality sometimes.

My fandom pet peeves are:
- People acting like an entire fandom is terrible based on a few bad actors, or, gasp- appealing to children??? (To be fair, anyone causing harm to others should be held accountable, and some fan spaces do hold up negative societal ideals more than others, but writing off an entire community isn't fair given how large and varied it can be).
- The majority of fans only focusing on how hot a certain character is (which is fine, but but it makes discussion hella boring).
- People getting pissed at those headcanoning a character as being part of a marginalized group. You don't have to agree with the headcanon, but getting that angry implies that people who are part of those groups don't belong in fandom unless they can justify their inclusion, which isn't fair.
What fandom is it
I'm currently writing a long fanfic, took me two years to write and will probably take me another one to finish.
It always stings so bad when something like that happens.
hey i wish you luck with raising your kid :3 unrelated ik
Ack, fellow DSMP fan here and I 100% get it :(
Was searching for this comment, yep. Not as much DSMP as just the creators surrounding it (the good ones), but definitely with the fanart/fiction thing. They forget it’s real people.
Yep- I love the DSMP but I am so glad the QSMP seems better fandom wise
The fanfics for DSMP were sooo good I sometimes wish I didn’t fall out of interest :(( I’m vaguely interested in QSMP but I’m not really sure what it’s about or where to start with it
Same issue with Eddsworld fans. Even though they're no longer based on real people
My fandom has a really bad hypocrisy problem, even creators I like will actively go against what they said/believe/made because of reasons.
Many of my fandoms have a HORRID mischaractization problem.
the coffee thing at the beginning is so true, it's odd how you can have a character mention liking a food (not even it being their favorite, just saying they enjoy it) literally once and then people act like all the character eats is that food lmao.
i'm into mlp (yeah, i know) and it's happened to two seperate characters, there's this one character who's supposed to be a villain, and at one point she mentions taco tuesday, and it's not even supposed to be "she loves tacos so much!!" and more like "haha, she's a villain but she's more focused on food, isn't she so silly?" but now every single thing i see involving this character has tacos somewhere in it lmao.
ohhh i know that scene, yeah that's really weird (also, no one was eating tacos after that was mentioned)
dear god its like with pav (atsv) and chai tea
Sonata dusk lol
This happened sometimes in Creepypasta fandom with the ticci toby guy with waffles and Masky with cheesecake
And the worst part of it, since they ruined the mh characters more than I'd like to know, is that the cheesecake thing came from a fatphobic joke against Masky's actor from marble hornets, who got affected to the point that Troy(One of the Directors) had to deactivate the comment section of the main channel
Not to mention more about this fandom, which I hate with a passion nowadays
6:06 Any BL manga with controversial topics. People will love murderers, manipulators and rapists but be mad at a female character for just existing.
this is so real! i could say SO MANY things about this!
The dark BL manwha I read actually has sunshine children as members, I find it extremely ironic lol
@@kaleenar963She’s not a horrible person but there are definitely better role models out there for teens.
It’s great.
Yo that's nostalgic, I used to be a big wings of fire fan
well, we do have the ongoing debate on which jade winglet ship is real, but yes!

the only time i’ll forgive the “the fans hate the source material” thing is in the miraculous ladybug fandom as it’s mainly fics and the actual source material has some redeeming moments that are worth the absolute garbage main character’s cringy, borderline stalker-ish behaviour
Yeah. This show is a mess 💀
Fr
Yep.
I agree the show is a mess. I personally like it because it's so weird and bad but it still is weird and bad. I liked the movie genuinely though
Agreed
So my few pet peeves are
1) when fandoms give fetishy lgbt+ headcanons and claim it's to give representation
2) race swapping characters while ignoring bipoc characters that do exist
3) Over sexaulizing ships where the characters are minors
4) Bashing female characters because they get in the way of their ships
First one and fourth one happens so much with mlm ships and I hate it. I think it's okay if you're more comfortable with shipping same gender characters(as long as it's not simply because it just turns you on), but please, stay respectful to characters that have done nothing wrong to you. It was a common problem in MHA and in genshin's fandom it's the other way around with wlw ships
I've noticed something similar to your first one happening, where people claim transfem characters to be femboys.
Second one is weird also
especially in fandoms like genshin
The absolute animosity between newcomers, veterans, and those who are in-between. I've loved this media since I was three years old, and being almost thirty now, I can point out flaws with every bit of every version of said media, yet veterans will adamantly say that anything new is bad, and everything old should be praised like there's nothing wrong with it. Newcomers can get absolutely bashed by the veterans for liking the new content and sometimes not knowing about the old content, and in-between people get it even worse cause despite their love, they point out flaws with each part. I should know, cause I'm in-between.
Average day in the TMNT fandom....
Especially on Reddit T __ T

Hating romance and ships and wanting EVERYTHING to be platonic as if we can't have both platonic and relationships in media
^ This
^ This
Its because oversaturization.
I love complex characters and I've read a good handful of fics that not only maintain that complexity but enhance it, but it's so few and far between
A few issues I have with some fandoms I’m in:
* One ship getting so much undying love that half the posts on Tumblr are just uwu soft moments between the two characters, stripped of a lot of what makes both the characters and the ship itself appealing, as if the ship being together is the only thing that matters about either
* Acting like it’s not unreasonable to demand a game do more than the system it was made for can handle and generally expecting more work to be done better in less than half the time
* Hating characters for being “pedophiles” for having crushes on teenagers, regardless of whether or not the character in question is also a teenager (Which they are more often than you might expect, sometimes even being younger than their crush)
A couple more:
* Treating the good guys as irredeemably evil and the bad guys as the real heroes for reasons like “The protagonist fought them!” (because they were an invading military force) or “He can’t be a good guy if he MADE the robots! The other guy’s completely innocent!” (when the robots were built for labor, and the “innocent” guy kidnapped and reprogrammed them into terrorists)
* My favorite character having his entire life in fan fiction revolve around his undying loyalty to his original boss who, in his debut, he got sick of working for and proceeded to never acknowledge the existence of again, completely ignoring his amusing quirks and unique-for-the-series ability to play people like fiddles.
Yeah, this. A fandom is supposed to be a community for a shared hobby, not a cult.
Is it hazbin? Dying to know what it is tbh
@@AdorableFennec It’s not hazbin, It’s the object show community, still have no idea how a bunch of cartoon objects managed to make people go that crazy.
@@RaysArtCorner Ohhh... I mean I've heard the shows were pretty good (never watched any myself) , but attacking people over it... Is too much
@@AdorableFennec yea it sucks that these unhinged fans make the community look bad when in reality most of them are chill people and are very creative.
I have a couple…
FNAF - I stepped back from the fandom after being hyperfocused on it for almost a decade and realized how weird they treat Scott Cawthon.
Granted, I literally have a whole essay on why I don’t like any of the new fnaf games and I also criticize many fan behaviors in it lolol)
The fnaf fandom is such a damn crybaby, they can’t even take a small joke over how infamously bad the writing is.
This is my own little rant;
I’ve never seen anyone bring it up, but Sans and his beliefs feel inspired from Zelda’s Majoras Mask, lol. Especially knowing Toby loves Nintendo. I actually get sad thinking about how nobody really focuses on Sans existentialism and how much it reflects a lot of iconic games. I would literally kill to see an interaction between Sans and Happy Mask Salesman. Unfortunate, truly.
Gonna toss my two cents in:
That’s when I got told to off myself LMAOO
I also acknowledge that Sans has no memory of resets, or even knows about its existence in general.
I love having these convos lol
Retcon - (in a film, television series, or other fictional work) a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events, typically used to facilitate a dramatic plot shift or account for an inconsistency.
Imo, I think him retconning was a lazy attempt to cover up any major plotholes in the game, because now people can just say “the series was retconned so *insert major plothole* no longer matters.”
I’m really not joking or strawmanning, that is an actual response I’ve received - from a multitude of fans - when bringing up plotholes and flaws in the series. But hey, it’s ultimately up to your interpretation 😁👍
3:50 As a Danganronpa fan, I know how you feel. I literally find the villain of that to be one of, if not THE most evil character in fiction, PERIOD. Yet half of the fandom is like "But she's hot!" Tag smut as smut.
Expanding further on this: tagging platonic relationships as romantic and the other way around,
also not tagging important messy tags and warnings such as non-con and even without
using "author chose not to ese archive warnings" warning.

This is why I never talk with people I don’t know on a personal level about Star Wars any more.
Honestly I think this is a symptom of trans headcanons are often 1) Some one fetishizing trans people (mostly trans guys in alot of fandoms)
2) people who have that mind set of "if you don't say my hc is canon then you're a bigot"
That said as long as you're not a creep, being an ass and harassing people over it, then headcanon what you want
@@GraveyardMaiden Exactlyyy. I think that if someone only makes the hc to fetishize trans people, the fandom can get mad. Especially since the character I was referring to earlier is young.
If people are just fetishizing trans people, then people who dislike it are justified.
@@rxzwl Yep
As an owl house fan I just wish everyone would calm down about its cancellation. Like I get it but for example when it was announced P and F was getting revived the literal first comment I saw was “they’d rather cling to a 15 year old show than finish the owl house”
the worst part about one of my fandoms is that there isn't enough fanart or fanfics about my two favs 😭😭😭 i haven't seen ONE fanfiction with one of these two as the main character or specifically about them they're always side characters who are barely even there :(
Same
I’m currently in that boat. I got a new rarepair like last month. Not a single fic, and barely 4 pieces of art. absolute *tragedy.*
@@jtopc2116 oof that’s even worse! I am so sorry you’re stuck there! D:>
At least they aren't hated by all
I’m in a fandom where one ship- the most popular one, mind you- is so unbelievably sexualized to the point where I can’t look up fan fictions without being absolutely blasted by the most unholy “find god” part of the internet. The sheer amount of omegaverse is extremely concerning
gir pfp lol
What fandom is it?
omg right?! like girl can we please have SOME plot ANYWHERE????? and the canon will be like g rated too!
@@epiclyepicguy At a guess, I'd say Star Wars. They didn't explain much, but it sounds like Star Wars from what little they did explain.
Which is disappointing because when I look for Star Wars stories I don't even want anything to do with that era of the timeline.
when an underrated and well written character slowly gets more popular and slowly starts to get more and more mischaracterised
That tends to happen in fandoms with a lot of preteens
I heard the FNAF fandom was getting pressed about Poppy Playtime Chapter 3 having a yellow chicken character in it. I don’t get it, FNAF did not create the yellow chicken it’s been done so many times in so many cartoons that came before FNAF. Why are they mad?
When ppl lose it at AroAce headcannons. People hate when you insinuate that their fav character doesn’t like sex. The over sexualisation of canon asexual characters too (Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, Jon from The Magnus Archives, Lilith from The Owl House, etc)
As an aromantic person, YES! Having said that I also really like ship fanfic because romance isn't something I will experience again irl.
One thing I disliked in the Deltarune fandom when chapter two was pretty new,
aside from the misgendering of Kris because they/them apparently aren't valid as a character's preferred pronouns (and I think this really toned down after all this time which is nice)
is something I would call "toby said in an interview" which means that someone got a supposed game fact from someone else's comment who probably also got it from someone else who said that Deltarune's creator said it in an interview, but they don't have actual prove for it, let alone the interview itself.
@@FrozenFennekin I feel your frustration...
(my fandom is the OSC)
first of all: the same noncanon traits and overexaggerated personalities for some characters being SO POPULAR. i don't need tumblr sexyman (sexywoman?) lollipop for the 2763rd time. and second of all: the crazy amount of people in this fandom that passionately hate shipping. they'll just be like "uhm but they're just objects!!" to every piece of cute fanart they see. no they are NOT "just objects," *TIMOTHY,* THEY ARE OBJECTS WHO TALK AND WALK AROUND AND HAVE FRIENDSHIPS AND RIVALRIES AND EMOTIONS AND INTELLIGENCE (UNLIKE YOU) AND WHO WOULD MOST LIKELY ALSO HAVE ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS. STAY MAD AND LET ME SHIP MY STAPLERS AND PIECES OF ORIGAMI IN PEACE.
3:58 this this this this
i'm also a doctor who fan and this aspect of the fandom drives me crazy. just have fun, or don't, it's fine, but don't throw a tantrum about it
