I've lived in the Philippines over 10 years and Joe Bonamassa is the only major rock/blues artist to appear here. Gotta thank him for making the effort to perform.

Good for Joe B. He doesn’t need social media . He is a real musician and gained his fan base by going on the road and proving himself nightly. Great musician!
Very true. However, social media for him, at this stage, was likely more for marketing purposes than to actually interact with anyone. It's mostly posts about shows, dates, merch, pretty non-personal topics. Have you seen his merch store? He is obviously in full-blown grow the business mode. But, you're right, he doesn't social media. His marketers will keep using his handles to promote sales and that's really all it needs to be.

There are both sides to this social media dilemma.
First people who I knew who introduced me and absolutely love Joe B. are my in laws. In their late 60s now, have never touched social media. Fucking love him, have his records, catch his shows when he's in town. And turned me on to him.
Really doesn't need social at this point in his career.

I agree with your old man. There is some common misconception about technology and progress. Not all technology equates to "progress" and not all progress is without it"s downside. Take carbon emitting technology for example. There is such a thing as unintended ill effect.

I'm 55, and in 2012 I was doing IT work in a publishing office. This was around the time that Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook came into fruition. I said to a co-worker: "Nothing good is going to come of people hearing everyones opinion all the time"

Anytime you publicly stick your head up above the crowd, there's going to be some people happy to throw rotten tomatoes at the target. Please keep doing what you're doing because there's a TON more of us who are grateful for every minute of it. I do think it is important that you guys respond and engage with your subscribers and followers to the extent it is possible.
People would not say most of the offensive stuff not standing before you. The problem is they feel safe and anonymous. It's more the 'talk behind the back' stuff in real life. With social media, you can level with everyone and get away with it. And the smaller the ego, the higher the probability, I guess. Of course, some super egos need to lash out, too.

It's just sad. He has wealth a of knowledge about vintage gear and guitars He shares it with all of us. He has his blues cruises that supports a whole bunch of blues artists with the public who may never heard of these other talented artists. He produces records of lesser known blues artists. That's a big loss to the artists ,the to blues community and fans of the blues. He's built a very successful career in a music that is rare, especially for a rock blues guitarist with virtually no airplay. It's a monumental feat. Hopefully he takes mental break and returns.
I agree, but I believe that Joe will return, he is a superb blues rock n roll guitarist and a lover of magical old guitars, of which his favorite is the Fender Telecaster, and before swags, he is a very good man, Rick and Rhett are also first of all, very very good people, we witness that every day! As I said, I am convinced that Joe will return!!! Until then, I respect his decision!

I am so sad about this. I didn't discover Joe until I was 90 and am 91 now and start every morning with his music on you tube . What I will miss is what he does from now on. I will continue to watch what is already on the tube.because I absolutely love his work!!! Starts my day!

Isn't it cool how musical tastes are so individualized? Joe is one of my very favorites. I've seen him about 5 times.
@redrocker1055 - Yep, Joe's music doesn't really do it for me either, but I'm not much of a blues fan, so it's more the genre that doesn't turn me on, and not him specifically. Nevertheless, I respect his musicianship, and his dedication to the instrument. Also, he reveres John Jorgenson, which increases my esteem for him immensely. 😎
It's respectable that Joe has the self awareness to see an issue in his life and take steps to resolve it before it turns into a public problem. Good for him!

As a fan of blues/rock guitar music, I personally would hate if Joe never came back to social media. I truly enjoy Joe's playing, I remember seeing a story about him many years ago on tv when he was really young and thought, "this kid's got it" and have been keeping an eye/ear on him ever since. At the end of the day though, it's Joe's journey and his personal choice. There have always been and will always be negative people in our lives, we just need to remember that as much as it might hurt us internally, it's more about the negativity in the other person's life and they're just displacing their own insecurities and fears onto others. Stay positive and jam on.🎸
I remember him as a kid playing, as I was a younger kid when he was first getting noticed. Once I really learned to play, and was able to play many of the styles of music I loved, Bonamassa became less impressive.
I still respected his ability, and that he earned respect from others whose playing I did really love. He only helps keep guitar driven music out there, regardless of what I think of Joe, snd things like how he was such a big part of why the used guitar market changed after the 90’s.
Dude! Of course Joe Bonamassa is great, but he is Goofy as fuck! He doesn't want to hear about it, so he should definitely quit social media. It's not a big deal. I will continue to be a fan

@@audiophileman7047 it is solely my opinion that Joe Bonamassa is a very goofy guy. Maybe other people share that same opinion. Joe Bonamassa has always been a little bit hacky and goofy. This is not take away that he's a great guitar player and an inspiration for all of us.
One definition of a critic is "the one that comes out after the battle and shoots the wounded." You guys do a great job keeping things upbeat on your channels. There are tons of appreciative YT viewers who quietly admire those among us brave enough to get on camera and share what they know and have passion for.
Most critics are not in the battle. They hide behind keyboards and shoot those in the battle.

The only things that bring me to social media are the great musicians like Rick and Rhett, they teach so much and speak such sense. Keep up the good work guys. Joe Bonamassa will be missed.
You know why I love you both? It's because you guys are clean and not smutty. It shows me how intelligent fellows that I take your teaching like the gospel.
Joe was one of the first to embrace YT, Spotify, people filming him and sharing gig videos and anti social media. If he thinks it’s time to leave or at least have a break from it, then good luck to him - although I hope he stays on YT.

The seemingly large and dedicated clique of Bonamassa haters out there is astounding… and they’re really vocal about it. Personally I’m not really a fan of Joes playing or music BUT….i can’t play at 20% of his level and never will be able too. Nor can I write a song like he can, and the mere fact that he is the wealthiest most successful blues genre artist ever shows you the amount of drive and intelligence this man has to get there!
If you can’t RESPECT that then the word “MALCONTENT” comes to mind! There isn’t one person that knows him or has met him that doesn’t say he’s the nicest guy you could meet!

one of the worst parts of social media is that gives people unreal courage to say whatever hurtful thought comes to their mind and they enjoy doing it because they have so many insecurities to hide and by attacking a successful person they feel powerful.

That is not exactly accurate. People have been able to do this previously. For ages, creators have been complaining about critics and their opinions. It is just that now you get to hear everyone's opinions, if you choose to be fully engaged. Joe should know that selection and editing is the individual's super power when it comes to media.

There was a time without youtube and social media, and we only knew the musicians for their music, and that made It even more interesting and mysterious. Thats almost gone now.
It was a blessing to have had Joe online with us all for as long as we did. He has a massive tangible reality where he can insulate himself from the toxicity of the negativity that is running rampant on today's social media platforms. Life is too short to engage the madness. Deprive it of your energy and leave its fate to the wind. Stay positive and continue forward one and all.

My favorite version of JB was when I used to see him for $10 in bars. I have followed his success and catch him every year. But those early years were more melodic, bare, and soulful. I don’t mean that as a knock, he has done so much for so many. A pull back and reassessment is good for the soul. I look forward to Joe 3.0, 4.0, and beyond.

Thank you two for talking about this topic. Andy Wood told some of us about this and we discussed it. One thing I do know is some of the greatest guitarist of our time have been criticized with dumb and simply hateful comments. I've met Joe at one of Andy's guitar camps. Sweet guy, so down to earth with no ego I could see. I think people want to judge others by how successful they are. Joe is a great guitarist, a great entertainer, bring a great show with the full band, the backing vocals. He puts on a top notch show because he cares about his product and the people who consume it. This happens on the amateur level as well. The popular players and bands are not necessarily the best players or bands. But instead of criticizing or being jealous I try to learn what they are doing right to be so popular. In my local area I have observed it's about material (song choice) and keeping the energy up. Joe is such a huge success and an easy target because he is out there a lot. And at the amateur level I always believe I can learn from any guitarist I happen to see.

Like many of the people here, I've enjoyed watching Joe on Instagram, but there's no question in my mind that he's going to be happier letting his team manage things without personally engaging. People with miserable lives get online to escape. Joe has an amazing life and he should enjoy it. I can't imagine that engaging on social media adds anything.

Anthony, You have discussed depression and helped a lot of people. Joe is like anyone else. When people attack you, it is near impossible not to take it personally. The fact is, unwarranted opinions hurt at times and it is ok to walk a way from things that bring you down.
Been following you both for a while now and it's been so rewarding! I've been a music and concert photographer for several years and social media has been an invaluable tool which has opened a few doors for me and kept me abreast of what was happening in the local music scene. And you're right...if you put your work out in public, you may get responses you won't appreciate. I've experienced it and like Rhett said, it can be (and has been) a learning experience from which I've grown. I just watched the documentary, The Social Dilemma on Netflix last night and social media is becoming a place that for all the benefits we enjoy, they come at a price. It really is a shame we lost Joe.
Have watched both of you for a long time. You guys are tops. My world is better for having your talents, expertise, and love for music in it. Keep up the good and blessed work you are both doing. You are APPRECIATED.
Level headed and informed. As usual, you guys have provided a realistic and personal view of a subject that needs to be talked about. It's unfortunate that there are those out there who feel they can say whatever they like because they have anonymity behind a keyboard. They affect us all by the callous nature of the vitriol they spew into the internet. We all lose when those we admire and follow step down from social media because of this kind of abuse. All the more power to Joe. He took the right path as far as I'm concerned. And thank you both for putting this out there.

Man, I can relate! Having run my channel for 12 years now, I’ve had more than my share of trolls. It’s really tough to not read and comment back when you have a snarky response loaded and ready, but you’re right, it’s not worth it. The delete and block buttons are your friend.

Wow I am moved by your story's. I find it sad that great people who are willing to share what they know have to go through all of that. I play reggae guitar and it was extremely difficult to find help online. So it took me years to edudacte my self in this style. I had to listen and watch countless live concerts and hope to see a glimps of what the guitar players use and how they play. I see my self now as pretty knowledgeable on this subject. And the idea of sharing this on youtube has crossed my mind countless times. I am sure I can be very helpful to many people that want to start. But I never do it because of the reason that I know I am far from the best guitar player and probably would get to much hate comments from all the people thinking they know it better. People like you Reth and Rick has helped me a lot. I thank you and hope you will not make the same decision as our hero Joe Bonamassa

Joe is amazing person, as he has never left his humble beginnings, he has always wanted to share his passion of the music industry. Have enjoy all his collection of amps and guitars, and know that I would never be able to own this stuff, but have a couple of guitars, and owned a dozen amps in my life time. Joe's willingness to share his good fortune and music insight and tips to get a sound or be a better player. He took time out of his tour when he was in Portland, Or to meet with Doug and Pat and share there love for Holy Gail of 59 or 60 Gibson Les Paul, Joe is not a self absorbed person, just constantly searching for perfection in his playing and performing, so much talent. Beth Heart and him are just amazing.
I don't know Joe personally and his style of blues isn't exactly my cup of tea, but from what I've seen he's a great dude and obviously a monster player whom I respect. This is an unfortunate effect of social media that comes with the times. We're not going to stop having malicious people and their intents. I hope he decides to come back so we can steal more of his impossible licks!

I’ve played for over 50 years now, so many comments people just seem clueless about the work and time it takes to become a pro player! I almost always find something of use from watching guys like yourselves about music, gear, and so much more. Shame that anyone is disrespectful, if they disagree or something just move on, no need to write something trying to show how smart they think the are??? It is a loss for the guitar community, especially the blues guitar community, Joe has been in the game for so long and has a wealth of knowledge that he always seemed willing to freely share. Too many creeps out there hiding behind a screen, it's not just in guitar but every other online space, sports, theater, film, dance, everywhere.
Totally bummed out to hear this. Overall, I don't like social media much, but not seeing Joe's videos or his playing/tone tips is a real loss to me. One of the greatest players to ever live!

I love your content and really cool of you guys to talk about this subject. Important stuff! My take is that bullying is never ever ok, and this behaviour is never justified even though social media is social media. Small minded negative people should not be allowed to spread psychological infections. Its bullying and psychological violence and damage a lot, also the loved ones to the oppressed. Joe is too good of a guy to have to put up with that.

I met Joe once and spoke with him briefly. He is friends with a good friend of mine. He is nice, personable and down to earth, and extremely knowledgeable, not to mention he is a MONSTER player. I don't care what he looks like, or if he even has a face(glad he does), he is a player/artist - not a model.
You guys are good people and, while you're appearance is just fine, I'd watch your channels whether you are 600 lbs, 150 lbs, or 60 lbs. I watch for your content and PERSONALITIES. I like the content, but your personalities is what keeps me coming back.

Joe’s a great guy. I’ve ran into him a few times and he is one of the most down to earth dudes I can think of. People on the internet can be downright putrid

I read about Joe quitting social media. I can't speak to "should he?", but I immediately wanted to reach out and give him some encouragement. It's not really possible without social media, though!
Think about this... maybe Joe doesn't want or need the validation or encouragement from strangers... anymore than the toxic crap that he gets?
I think the Pony Express still goes to his record company or management offices. The internet doesn't run the whole world, sometimes you have to do things yourself.

Joe is a guitar player, a master musician. People that comment about Joe's appearance have trouble looking at themselves in the mirror, or they're jealous of his talent and are just trying to tear him down.Joe's the man!

Been in the works of slowly weaning out of social media. With the being said, I wanna say something positive. It is extremely hard to be consistent among other things like being creative, transparent, energized, and positive. I appreciate both Rick and Rhett being consistent influences to a community of people who have a lot to say

Good discussion. I like that Rick mentioned his empathy for the projection of others who are unhappy. That's important to remember.
You guys should do more videos together. It’s fun and entertaining to see two people you follow on each other’s “show”.
I for one will miss Joe's presence, its a shame when the few spoil it for the many.
Social media allows people who have no interest in doing anything to rag on those who do. Your channel and Rhett's and a whole host of others are important in keeping us engaged and informed, it would be a shame to see it all go. We should all stop feeding the trolls and maybe eventually they'll go away. Maybe.
