People praise Mario Cuomo's speech in '84, but I thought this speech, in terms of sheer power and oratorical skill, was one of the greatest I ever heard and certainly the best that year.
I remember this speech. The ending is cut off by a few seconds here ... he ends with "... and there will be a change because OUR TIME HAS COME! Thank you and God Bless You."
Well, the verdict is in. This is the greatest speech I've heard in my adult life. The amazing thing is it's just as relevant now as the night he gave it (this is 2017). I wish I could thank him for being so extremely inspiring. Imagine, a Christian leader who actually sounds Christ like. Hearing this is like rain falling in the desert.
The rythmn and the cadence are so well done. Honed on the Baptist pulpits of the South. I love how he uses almost a musical structure and he also gives a beautiful example of how to use biblical allusions to inspire people
I was raised in a racist family in the 1980s and seeing Jesse campaigning and debating Apartheid on Nightline had an enormous impact on me. I was particularly struck by the irony of my single mother living at the poverty line dismissing Jesse as a charlatan; Jesses message was practically tailored to her substantive concerns but because he was black she couldnt recognize this obvious fact : (
I saw this live on TV during the convention that Summer, I was seeing History in the making at that young age, as this is one of the greatest speeches in American History!
He has said some wrong things and done some wrong things. However, his exalted oratory is of the like we have not seen for some time. He meant it fully. I believe he was for all working people of all races. I wish he had won.
+Jon Wayne Your post would make sense if I had said anything about Sanders, but since I didnt you join the ranks of the non sequitur, the folks too stupid to understand any but the most obvious points, unable to craft a meaningful or even a relevant response... youre mentality is a significant reason American democracy is so circumscribed, the canaille lack the requisite faculties to glean even a semblance of understanding , youre the worst of America :D
If referring to that Reagan deficit, he got a lot of traction for belittling the 68 billion deficit of the Carter administration. Of course Ronnie was re elected. When he left office, what a 480 billion deficit? Some smarter than I said that in today's dollars a 1.3 one.
This is one of the historical events that you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard it. God bless you, Rev. Jackson.
I remember this speech. It moved me to tears.
Likewise

+Kevin Bowman I was there and will never forget it!
As a public orator, he is amazing. I believe he truly wanted to help all.

Well said.
This is one of the greatest political speeches of the 20th century. Why is there no complete version to be found on the net?
Thank you Jesse.

Historic speech!❤ Thank you, Reverend Jesse Jackson. Trailblazer!

I can't believe we are still fighting for the same thing in 2022. The poor will always be marginalised.

Interesting post.
I'd rather have Roosevelt in a wheelchair than Reagan on a horse.
Brilliant!
