    I picked up this antenna and am using it with my FT-891, because it can handle 100W SSB. It performs surprisingly well for me, and tuning it to get to SWR around 1.2 or lower is very easy with a counterpoise cut for each band (180/frequency=length in feet). I know I've heard of people using metal tape measures so they don't have to have separate counterpoise wires per band as well. Once you know roughly how many segments of the whip to extend for each band with that antenna it's very easy to make small adjustments to the whip to dial in the SWR and get on the air. I actually picked this up for SOTA use for summits where there are no trees and not an easy way to get a mast up, and it has worked surprisingly well for that.

    • @DougFredericks1
      @DougFredericks1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes agree completely. Also I find that the counterpoise has to be at least 2.5’ off the ground for acceptable SWR. Just throwing the CP on the ground doesn’t work.
      So at that point, with a raised CP getting in the way, you may as well use an efhw on a fishing pole.

    I have heard that a counterpoise is very important to the efficient operation of the Comet HFJ 350M vertical. I am planning on connecting this antenna to the 20 radials of my DX Commander Expedition to see how it plays...

    • @HamRadio2

    I have good fun with an MFJ-1820T on 20m, it only works with a counterpoise but for such an antenna it's surprised me.
    I also have fun with the DL1DN whip, you have to touch the ground on the antenna, you become the counterpoise but it works well.
    Other antennas I like portable are the MFJ-9232 QRP loop tuner, no counterpoise needed and it works well, probably better than loaded short whip. I've made decent contacts from Ireland to Russia with it and beyond with 5 watts and just 2 meter circumference antenna of 10mm soft copper pipe. You make different loops sizes for different bands but it works well.

    Have what might be a crazy question. Thinking of getting the HFJ-350M to take camping. (Its budget friendly and easily replaceable vs $300+ alternatives). Running counterpoise wire in a camp site can pose a trip/run into hazard, especially for kids. So here's my question: Is there any harm if I was to take high-vis (something like WEREWOLVES Reflective 550 Paracord) /glow-in-the dark 550 cord, and replacing the internal cords with stranded 26awg? I'm pretty sure the outer nylon sheath shouldn't affect the operation of the counterpoise/antenna but I'm not 100%. Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions? (Even if its: just "bad idea" or "good idea but use # AWG wire instead). Great videos, thanks in advance, and for posting the licensing classes (especially extra). I'm re-watching them in prep for upgrade testing.

    If "Roger?", means, "Did you hear what I sent?", and, "Roger", means, "i received everything you sent.", then evidently ham clubs are helping people to get licenses, but not following through. They are turning them loose with no guidance, to "qsl? qsl? qsl? qsl," and then everyone is doing it, and "qsl," does not mean, "I received everything you sent." We are supposed to be competent radio operators. Sorry. I did enjoy the video on this antenna, and did not know that it even existed. i have an old Miracle Antenna, but don't have a QRP radio anymore. Looking at the IC-705 a lot these days, and know that it's very expensive, and may not get out that well, but trying to justify it for SWLing (anywhere I may be), and 10m(Anybody local on? Or someone might hear me if sporadic-E shows up-- on a base antenna), 6m(CW? and SSB and FM-- on a base antenna), 2m (Repeater and SSB-- mountaintop or base antenna, or in my car), and 440(430 SSB and repeater-- mountaintop or base antenna, car). I keep having a premonition of having a $1300 radio slip out of my hand and bouncing off of something bad (concrete or blacktop). I have a feeling that prices aren't coming down anytime soon, on new stuff, and that used radio gear prices are going to skyrocket. So perhaps an IC-705 is in my future. Maybe can attach a lanyard to it. 73 everybody.
