Why Barefoot Shoes Shouldn't Look Like This

  • The Barebarics look so cool from the outside, but once they're on my feet I can't help but want to take them off. Here's why they don't work for me, and why they might work for you.
I bought the Be Lenka Barebarics - Zing barefoot shoes in August of last year, and wore them maybe 2-3 times, during which I frequently regretted putting them on. Since then I've lent them to my housemate who is getting some more use out of them - so I guess they work for some!

Well, I guess they'd be perfect for a guy like me who still wears Jordans 1s and has a pair of new balance 550's and a bunch of ultraboost with a pair of vibrams

Totally agree. I got these shoes a while back, but don't really wear them that much anymore b/c of the chunck and weight. Great points!

I have to agree. I recently picked up a pair of Barebarics Kudos sneakers and I noticed basically the same thing. They look great, and they are wide in the toe box, have a cork insole, so they feel good without socks....but I never wear them because I don't like how I move in them or the weight.
I'm tempted to try either the Origo sneakers (Retro or Everyday models) or Be Lenka Champs the next time around. For now, its summer and I am living in sandals.

I think the problem lies in the usage of the word:
    'barefoot'
I'v had this discussion also with friends, when do you call it 'barefoot'?
    Under what stack height?
In my opinion; zero drop + low stack height + good ground feel + wide toebox + no arch support = barefoot
Are my 20 mm stack height Topos barefoot? I sure feel more from the ground then on my Meindls?
What about Altra's Lone Peak with 25 mm stack height? Pretty flexible, lots of toe space, no arch support, zero drop.
My freet Flex are really barefoot if you ask me. I think they have my complete list of 'barefoot shoe' characteristics.
So maybe we should make - and use - other categories?
    Like the existing 'minimalist'.
Softstar calls their shoes 'minimal' instead of barefoot, but they are very barefoot to me.
I think the young market doesn't agree yet on what to call the different styles and thicknesses.
'Wide shoes' tend to be wide fore the forefoot, but do not necessarily offer space for the toes to splay and move around.
    What about 'natural footwear'?
Maybe someone big shoe brand need to take the first step here? Come up with some different names for different styles, sure will make the searching for a specific shoe a lot easier. I know people who are specifically looking for a wide toebox, but not for zero (or low) drop. Not so easy to find.
Anyway, the Zings are sold as barefoot, but it seems that you don't agree, what should they call the shoe otherwise, if not 'normal'. (there is not so much information on their website about weight and stack height I saw).

This video came at a perfect time, because I've debating between this shoe and the feelgrounds courtside for the past few days. My only worry with the feelgrounds is that they look a bit more narrow in the toe box compared to the barebarics. I don't think my pinky toes would be pinched, but it definitely looks like they'd at least be touching the sides of the feelgrounds. I also like the beige color from the zing more. I heard that feelgrounds are going to be coming out with a canvas version of the courtside, I think I'll hold off until then.

I have only tried 3 barefoot shoe brands. I tried splay, Jim green and xero. In the order of my favorite to least favorite would be Jim green, splay and xero. Xero are good and I like them they are just narrow in the middle of the foot causing some minor discomfort. The splay have that too but not as bad. So both of those need to be wider in the middle of the shoe, the part that cobblers call the waist of the shoe. Then again 90% of shoes are too narrow in the middle. Jim green being one of the few that are just right when it comes to width.

I bought barebarics kudos as my first barefoot shoe since i wanted something that looked nice to wear everyday and used them for a year straight for pretty much everything. I still like them but honestly right now i feel very similar, they are not as light as i would like, the flexibility is good, but not the best and i enjoy walking in vapor glove 4s a lot more due to the ground feel. Coming from regular shoes they felt amazing and i don't regret buying them, but after a year wearing barefoot/minimalist i crave somthing that feels as close to barefoot as possible (hence i bought sandals since it's getting hotter and hotter here in poland)

I think the brand is meant to make transitional shoes for people who don't want to feel every stone but love the roomy toebox.

Very interesting shoe, could be a good alternative to my Freet Flex' - price with shipping is about the same.
