I like to ascend with sweep picking and descend with alternate picking. I just randomly started doing that one day when I was completely new to both techniques.

Improvising once was the most important criteria for you to prove yourself as an accomplished musician to SOME OF THE newbies who would practice for a year at the absolute best and quit. There was this stupid obsession with the ability of playing intricate and complete passages, melodies, falsetas or whatever the hell you want to call them. For some of these ultra knowledgeable newbie peasants, it didn't even cut it if you improvised decently but not perfectly only to arrange something amazing in a few days. YOU HAD TO PLAY A MASTERPIECE ON THE GO EACH TIME! Or you weren't a good musician. Their perception of a good musical piece was completely arbitrary too most of the time and was mostly based on someone else's preferences. Thank the gods there is some rising appreciation to pre-arranging good stuff these days, among the newbie peasants. Specifying it as the newbie peasants because this appreciation has always existed within the truly dedicated performers, who laid their lives in front of this capricious goddess that is music.
p.s. to the newbies; come on. Open a debate with a good old ad hominem.
