Try using oxalic acid to remove the water spots. Vinegar is great for mold and mildew. The reason gloss varnish is used first is because multiple coats of matte varnish makes the finish look cloudy. The more coats of matte the cloudier the finish looks. The only difference between gloss and matte varnish is the paste that is added to gloss to make it matte. Your going the direction I think I am going to go with my boat. All of the outside canvas is navy blue but I think I am going to change it to cadet grey when I get new canvas. Keep up the good work.

Love the video. One advice from a seasoned boat owner: those floorboards need way more varnish, preferably 2 components varnish. These 2 component varnishes are designed to be walked on, where a 1 component varnish most of the time is less resistant to scratches. Scratches and scuffing lead to the breakdown of the varnish layer and you'll be back to square one. The advice below on oxalic acid is great. Do try this too.
