- A series of TNG clips that show how Data's built, how he functions, etc. with, of course, a bit humor thrown in. I might have gotten carried away with it and made it a little long. But, if you're a Data fan, hopefully you'll like it.

I've always loved the scenes with Bashir and Data. So many Starfleet people that interacted with Data focused on his machine nature and how "other" he was, but Bashir is utterly fascinated with how *human* Data is and it's great to watch.
And yet of all species, the Klingons and Vulcans and Romulans respect Data more than hew-mons.
my #1 favorite thing is when the klingon is trying to fight him and data's just like 'hey don't hurt yourself man'

I love that line from legacy where he talks about feeling the absence of sensory input to describe how an android can miss his friends.
Especially as that is how it probably works for us too.
The more you think about it the more it makes sense. You get sensory inputs, you become familiar with them, then you anticipate them. Being able to anticipate them makes your life easier, because less processing is required to do the same task, or to exchange ideas. Then when they are gone, those anticipations misfire. You anticipate something that is not there, which means you are now applying mental energy on something that doesn't exists, which is both wasteful and draws your attention to the fact that you now must go back to doing more work to interact with different people who you are less familiar with. If you are built to constantly find more efficient ways to go about your life (and humans certainly are) this just comes across as a negative outcome. Depending on how your circuits work, that negative outcome might feel like a personal failure, or an offensive force from the outside world. When a friend isn't present, Data might literally feel like he did something wrong, or that he has been attacked or otherwise prevented from succeeding in his task. Analytically he probably knows that he did something wrong, but must still deal with the cognative dissonance of having done nothing wrong, knowing no one else did anything wrong, and feeling both hurt, and like a failure. How is that any different than what we feel?

Well, it proves that oxygen, as a gas, doesn't offer any structural support.
Obsidiron Pumicia, actually it does. Look at hot air balloons. Although I'm no where near an aeronautical engineer, I do know that when I flight aircraft wings are designed for air to flow over and under which allows not only lift in the aircraft, but also, the wings being the least sturdy of the body their design also allows the air to lift the wings giving added support so as to not have them rip away from the body. Like I said I'm no engineer. How ever I did serve in the Air Force and was around quite a few aircraft and was able to speak with many if the pilots. But air can be used for structural support.

Though occasionally Brent would slip up and use "it's" instead of "it is". Or it could have been the writers - a good chunk of Star Trek's inconsistencies is due to the large number of different screenwriters the series had.

@@George040270 Star trek TNG was shot on 35mm film when digital cameras were not a thing and tape recorded shows really lacked definition, as such the film shot shows can be re-scanned at higher resolutions than even intended for telivision and you can see some details the original creaters never knew would be possible. It's why you don't see reruns of shows like home improvement or saved by the bell. Unfortunately it also meant that it was MUCH more expensive to burn film in multiple tapes as film is extrodinarily expensive not just to shoot, but develop and process so shows like star trek had to work with what they got. Johonothan frakes got the nickname in his directing history of the show as "two takes frakes". A LOT of great performances were lost over the years because actors would practice a scene on set a few times well before the cameras ever started to roll in that era.
Picard is the soul and passion of TNG but Data is the heart. The writers really were great at making the scenes with the emotionless android the most wholesome and heartwarming (or heartbreaking) scenes in the show. Definitely done on purpose.
I miss the days when movies and TV shows were more deep and meaningful, unlike a lot of the crap today.

Data was naive and very innocent. Brent Spiner, not so much. He was notorious for pulling stage pranks for comedic and dramatic flair because he knew how popular he was and that the show couldn't work without him so he was often allowed to get away with them.
For a character that they keep calling a machine, they certainly do treat Data with the respect and affection one would give a human friend. And it was immensely funny when Data knocked that cocky Klingon on his ass. lol
Data is a machine. There's no escaping that fact, anymore than that Worf is a klingon, Troi is a betazoid, or that most of the crew are humans. No matter what changes are made, Data is never going to be human; but, he is still sentient, capable of experiencing emotions, and their friend.
@@mandytrouten3296 At his most basic level Data IS a machine.....much like the Doctor is JUST a Hologram or Seven of Nine is JUST a Borg. But like the Doctor and Seven of Nine who started as JUST an EMH and a Borg drone, Data has become MUCH more than JUST a machine.....as they proved in the episode Measure of a Man when Picard went to court on Data's behalf and challenged the officer who wanted to reduce him to "just Starfleet property" so he could be dismantled and replicated. Even the officer who wanted to say Data was just a machine....just "property" had to concede in the end that he was much more and therefore he was above being ordered to be dismantled.
Just like calling us a carbon life form. It's fact. He's a creation, he was pieced together by one man rather than evolution, he is a machine.

The only logical argument to have is, does Data have sentience? To that I would say yes.

Brent Spiner is criminally underrated as an actor. Can you imagine anyone else as Data? Not even for a second.
Brent Spiner was hilarious as Bob Wheeler on Night Court and Gil Godwyn in Out to Sea too. He plays a machine so well that I can actually see him play the T-1000 in Terminator 2 just as good or even better than Robert Patrick.
Robert Englund was up for the role... That'd be interesting.

Sometimes I am a little amazed at how well TNG did this sort of scene. Someone just easily saying that organic life forms are also in a way computers, without anybody being shocked or amazed. It's just passed as fact; it's the future, time and customs have moved on.
I mean, they're all scientists or at least science-minded. They get it.
There is some pushback from time to time, but the holdouts get brought up to speed in the long run.

Medicine has always systemized and analogized human biology in mechanistic terms, anyhow. One doesn't need to be a "scientist" to benefit from this understanding.

That's an understatement. He has 10 to 15x strength of a human, is bulletproof, can jump 10+ meters, super reflexes, super intelligent etc. He makes Khan/Augment look like a baby.
He utterly lacks any emotion, or so they keep saying. He is prone to overanalyzing and babbling, being paralyzed and indecisive when faced with cerebral conflicts. He tries persistently yet simply cannot cultivate any genuine artistic or creative talents. He fails to understand the most basic human psychology, instincts, interactions, and intuitions.
"Better" is a subjective term. Data is better than humans in some ways. Data is completely inferior in some others.
@@pwnmeisterage but there are humans who also lack those attributes, yet we have no right to dehumanize them. What's important is he is sentient and has no problem telling right from wrong without being stiff about it. He's proven to be able to comprehend complex ethical and moral problems, even if sometimes he can't exactly explain why - I'd say this is more than most people do. Barely anyone thinks why they behave the way they do and it results in serious blindspots - just look at the history of humanity and current political climate. Most people don't care to be better than they are, Data does and it makes him infinitely superior.

But if you consider "alive" in more human-centric metaphorical terms: animated, sapient, sentient, self-aware, conscious/with a conscience, curiosity and an inate need for his own rights... Then yeah... He's pretty alive.

The close friendship Data and Geordi share is one of the best things about both characters
It's interesting how they placed Data's computational specs. 60 trillion operations per second seemed so futuristic and out-of-reach back when this programme was made. It can be achieved with 3 high end graphics cards these days (something like the new RX Vega 64). His storage capacity is still relatively huge though, at 800 quadrillion bits (100 Petabytes). Archer (UK national supercomputer service) has about 4.4 petabytes of storage.
If youtube is still around, I will come back to laugh at this in 20 years. By then, such things will seem trivial.

I wish we could have seen more of Data and Bashir. Or Data on Deep Space Nine interacting with all the crew there. That would have been great. I would have loved to see Garak's reaction to Data as well.
Garek would both be impressed and view it as 'challenge accepted' to try pulling a fast one on Data.
And he'd be able to pull it too. Not by any means of super advanced spy voodoo or espionage, but a basic understanding of what data is as opposed to what he wants to be. Even with emotion he is still ultimately an android so would be an outsider looking in, albeit one with twenty or mroe users of experiance at that point to draw on.
Garek would find it a most exhillerating challenge.

My favorite episode in the next generation series will always be the measure of a man from season 2 because through that trial and the outcome I believe data actually achieved in some way steps necessary to becoming human.....or in his way of seeing it, more life like.
For humans, a species that by design lives in societies, it is important how others perceive them, for reasons of personal relationships and defining their place within the society.

Seeing these clips makes me remember how handsome Brent Spiner was. Hard to believe he was almost 40 years old when he started playing Data on TNG. Maybe it was the white makeup, but Brent looked considerably younger than that.

We've seen later on that Dr. Soong modeled Data after himself, either out of a sense of ego, or perhaps wanting to see Data as some kind of son.
@@HunhowsShadowStalker I think that Dr. Soong created Data and Lore because he wanted children but was never able to have them. He might have modeled them after himself because making them look like anyone else might be offensive to them if they don't consent to it. Picard also treats Data as well as Wesley, Geordi, etc. like his own sons as well since he also never had any children.

The 1080Ti is within an order of magnitude of Data's "sixty trillion operations per second" (>10 teraflops).
But that storage capacity! 800 quadrillion bits! That's 800,000,000,000,000,000 bits. Or to put it another way, that's 100,000 sets of 1TB hard drives. He's a walking server farm!
Yeah that's pretty hefty. To be fair though, we can fit 10 terabytes in a 2.5" form factor now, with some planning and optimism we shouldn't have much difficulty cramming at least one petabyte into the equivalent of a human body.
100PB might sound much, but at our current development it's not that far away. We'll probably see 100PB crammed into a single drive not much later than 2050, meaning with only a couple drives we could far exceed Data's storage capacity by the mid 21st century with just a few harddrives. Like many other shows that aimed to show off future technology, by the time the actual date the show was set at comes along it will seem quaint and antiquated. Sci-fi writers have a tendency to severely underestimate technological progress.
Besides which, quantum computing will make the entire idea of memory limitation obsolete. The capacity of the human brain may be functionally infinite if Penrose's quantum brain hypothesis turns out to be correct, since multiple palimpsests of data can be stored on top of each other in a single probability wave. An electronic qubit will play the same role as the proteins lining the microtubules in the neurons of the brain, storing data as a standing wave in a state of quantum superposition.
Current estimates put the human brain at 2.5 petabytes, and those estimates keep going up as neuro scientists do more studies... It won't be long before Data's storage capacity isn't even as much as a single lowly squishy human...
I would have loved to see Data on DS9. Data + Quark, Odo, Julian or Garak would have made for me great scenes

The ludicrous choice of making 'The Naked Now' the second episode of TNG season one never ceases to amaze me. You just have introduced about a dozen new characters you want your audience to get into, so naturally you spend your very second episode to show them at their lowest. Even the magic-Irish-space-ghost-episode would have made a more suitable second episode.

Too bad they didn't show Data's superior strength speed and durability more.
They did that often, that is why Data's physical prowess was well known "Even in The Klingon Empire."

Not enough but it makes sense for TNG. TNG was more about exploring philosophy, ethics, politics, and culture as much space and aliens.

For Americans...6.22 when Data falls over is 'inspired' (in my opinion) from British sitcom 'Only fools & horses'.. The clip on TH-cam is ' Del Boy falls through the bar'. Iconic British comedy moment 👌 there's not one Brit that hasn't seen and laughed at it 😂

Data doesn't have emotions. Except for when he does.
Tensile strength has to do with an objects resistance to being stretched while pulling along its length; a rope or cable has high tensile strength but can be easily rolled or folded. Data's ability to bend the bar proves nothing since we don't know its flexural strength.

Yeah. I used to watch STNG as a kid and even now, I think Brent Spiner was one of the most handsome men I've ever seen. He's also got the nicest hands I've ever seen on a guy too.

On Picard ...So the borg queen when she had data captured and put flesh on him was able to use his parts with human flesh like they are talking about in episode one! Love it!! She in a way was able to clone data or had the info saved in the borg ship we saw at the end of the episode

First time I recall ever seeing the "android alarm clock" scene....
Fun fact: Data's storage capacity is almost 91 petabytes. You'd need about 4500 of the world's largest commercial HDDs (rated at 20 TB as of December 2020) to match it. His computational speed is more modest by comparison. He can push 60 TerraFLOPs which is weaker than, for example, an AMD Ryzen 3600, which is rated at 91 TFLOPs. Our processing power has literally surpassed Star Trek.
Very impressive. Not that Data's processor is a slouch, by any means. Runs circles around human ability.

I do appreciate how, in one of the clips, Riker just trusts Data when he says he can take the fall. He may have his doubts, but he trusts his crew.
Also, 8 quadrillion bits is 100 Petabytes, which is roughly 40x the capacity of the human brain, to the extent of which that can be measured. Certainly not out of the realm of biological possibility and not the slam dunk Riker thought it was (although, there might be an element of plausible deniability for helping Data's case there; they were, after all, friends).
Dad would still qualify as a supercomputer now in 2021

Damn. I forgot about "The Most Toys." That was one of the creepiest things I've ever seen. I fear it gets forgotten often, but it's really a dark, nasty, well-written and acted hour of TV. Saul Rubinek was amazing; David Rappaport would have been equally good.

He's actually in a lot of movies and TV shows. Just looks different without all the chalky white makeup and creepy yellow contacts so you might not notice him right away.
