  • It’s all too common for us to think of our work as either the thing that gives us our identity, or something to be avoided at all cost, or some unhealthy combination of those two misleading philosophies. In this video, Fr. Mike aims to bring inspiration to our everyday jobs by showing us how our labor can be a way to share in God’s nature. By striving to look past humanity’s brokenness and sin, we can move beyond seeing work as a burden, and see how every act of work has dignity.
Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:

I’m only 26 and I’ve had at least 20 jobs. I realize that I’ve been making work a place where I look for meaning, and tire as soon as it doesn’t offer that. I pray that the Lord purifies this disordered good & that I may offer up what I deem as “insignificant work.”

you can make meaning within any job, it is possible! i did it in retail by just being good to others around me and caring for strangers, or making the shelves look beautiful.

I am a carpenter .. and it has been a grueling job for many year . sliced off fingers and broken hip.. blood is part of the job . scared of falling to my death but also seeing the divinity in what I do .. So many times I have stood back and cried .. I worried how I will make it the next week when injured and wondered why I was injured .. I would go to work and in my truck and pray .. I saw God in my work ! .. I would cry and get so excited when I'd see what I was able to do .. I felt The Lord and wondered why me .. Not why me in the sense of struggle .. But why me in .. Why did you give this Gift to me ? Things I couldn't figure beforehand .. I'd ask .. Show me .. and it happened .. I was witnessing like an observer and I'd get so excited .. I know my job might not pay that great .. I go to bed tired and wake up the next day excited and have never lacked food . I was provided for by God .. I was given an opportunity as a young man to build my parents house in 1986 .. I didn;t know what I was doing but it happened !! I hugged my mother in the back yard and told her " I didn't have a clue " and she said to me .. You have been given a Gift .. both of my parents passed in their beloved house years later .. and many years ago .. I understood the Gift and not only the work and toil .. But pass it on !! .. Show others what you know , teach and tell them they can do it and though they might not believe in God .. Testify always .. That it was Through The Lord unashamedly .. I will never take credit for all I have .. It was a Gift .. I will never curse God for the struggles ..I was taught through them and learned to love work and I see work as like a prayer .. I can give Glory to God through these hands .. .

I especially appreciated the end when you talk about work as an act of worship when offered to God. As a seminarian, my "job" for now, my duty of the moment is to be formed and to study. This can be pretty tough sometimes because my call is not to be a seminarian, but I'm in an interim stage that is preparing me for my "career" as a priest. Sometimes, the only thing that gets me through a paper or a study session is the fact that I can offer it as a prayer to the Lord; that through self-denial and the exercise of my creative gifts, I can offer my papers, my exams and my studying as an act of worship to God. Hopefully other college students are turning their work into prayer as well!

Because of that, I'm always looking to jump ship to get closer to whatever that might be (even if I'm not quite sure what that job would be). Thank you, Father Mike, for putting work in a realistic view.

I’ve been applying to jobs, and the rejection is tough. I got rejected from one (of many) jobs on December 1st, and yesterday, they sent me the rejection email again. Talk about kicking me when I’m down. I’m feeling so down because for the first time in my life, I don’t know anything. I graduated college. No more school. No more structure. I feel like I’m sitting around collecting dust. All I do is search for jobs every waking hour. I’ve been praying and praying, looking at scripture like proverbs 3 and psalm 23, but I just feel so scared and abandoned. Everyone else is finding jobs. I hate this.

I know this sounds trite - but you really only have to hear one "yes". Here's a practical tip: create some daily routines, go to Mass and Adoration as often as possible, and keep contacting your network of friends and family for help. We are praying for you. On a whim I took up a programing class online now I'm a sophomore programming major on the dean's list. Learning the logic and the rules in language has helped me work through a lot of projects. I guess because I wanted it so much I might have imagined it. I am studying accounting at the moment (2nd year) I plan to do some coding courses and then holefully by the Grace of God get employed in Denver, to never lose sight of the mountains and be close to Jesus there. Father Mike made me realize my vocation, my calling.
You heard it said to follow your passion or the gift/talent God gave you. And do smthg with that field. Perhaps.
But Father Mike made me realize how I can make my job fulfilling my purpose here on earth for the Lord. To get a job to help the poor, needy, sick, imprisoned.
And by devoting your job to ur Lord on a daily basis, you stay connected to the Lord through prayer, reflection thwarting off temptation, and disillusionment of mundane material life.
You keep God close in everything you do!
    WALK DAILY WITH THE LORD.
We are all brothers and sisters, and we need to help one another. Love, compassion, giving and all for the glory of the Lord.
So doing a job just bc we're in the image of God, ok. But to do smthg everyday as a job that we're called down from heaven to do, THAT'S the best job there is!
Thank you Father Mike for helping put God's plan before me!
Keep up the brilliant Holy videos of wisdom!!

Father Mike, your videos were recommended to me about a month ago and I watched through all of your videos on this channel. Your advice has been so helpful to me despite the fact I don't consider myself religious. I appreciate the love and compassion you spread through your messages and it gives me hope there are good people in the world. Thank you so much!

Beautiful! It seems right now, my 'work' is a life of prayer. I do plan on volunteering (other than street side praying in front of abortion facilities) and have started to inquire about that. Prayer does give me joy. It helps me pray for God's goodness to prevail, and God shields me from judging individuals, (though it is very difficult when even late term children who can live with help are left to die in agony, torn apart, or 'anesthetized' and killed --- and The Lord showed me it is all the same from the moment of conception for the conscious soul, known before the womb, with a natural ardent zealous emphatic will to live); I do pray for change of heart and mind. I pray for a greater voice for the Church, not just in words, but for their to be zeal throughout the Church to spread Good Counsel Homes and Sisters of Life to every parish. I can't understand the disconnect from Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, John Paul ii, Mother Teresa, John Cardinal O'Connor, and more. And those, no matter how high in station in the Church who champion this are relegated to a 'quiet' witness. God help us!

Fr. Mike, I'll be honest. This comment does not have a lot to do with the video, but has more to do with a personal struggle. I'm 18 years old now, always identifying myself as agnostic. Yet some part of me is quite sure that there is a God, specifically the christian one. What should I do? My relatives will surely object to any possible worship I do, and I feel alone. Thank you for your time, may the Lord bless you.

Berend de Liagre Bohl God will lead you to Himself. Because, He has placed something on your heart. I would find your nearest Catholic Church and go to it for mass and maybe set up a meeting with a Catholic priest by you. I will be praying for you.

Berend de Liagre Bohl You will never feel alone once you start searching for God. And you will realize He was and always is and will be with you. I am very happy to see an 18 year old seek for God and continue to do so because God will fill all the gaps we cannot fill even with closest family or friends around us. There will be many obstacles when you get closer and closer God, but He will walk alongside with you and you will get through the struggles. I say follow your heart you are in the right route, especially by asking Father Mike Schmitz what you can do. God bless you! Sorry I was touched by this comment.☺

      #askfrmike
      Hi there Berend,
It took a lot of courage to ask your question and I am so grateful for your honesty! Dont worry you are not alone, you have a whole bunch of people rooting for you and praying for you at this very moment, :)
I'm not sure how often Fr Mike responds on here, but he always does. If you would like to talk to him privately also, you could try emailing him. He was really prompt in replying to me.
Something that has always been helpful for me is just sitting in Gods presence in the Chapel. If there is a Catholic church near you I would highly recommend going. I never really knew how to pray before so I just sat there with Him, sometimes I would just cry, and eventually I learned how to open up to Him. Weekday mass is always a wonderful blessing. (there's less people there so it wont be too intimidating)
If you would like some reading material: "Rome sweet Home" by Dr Scott Hann is one of my favorites at the moment , as is Jennifer Fulwiler's "Something Other than God" . And , The Imitation of Christ.
Lifeteen.com also has some great online resources- videos, blogs, articles; and could help you find a great faith community!
And if you are in college: The Newman Center on your campus is probably gonna be your favorite place.
I hope this is a little helpful to you! and I am praying for you, your family and your journey with God!

Please take the bible. New testament, and start reading and praying, I'm sure you will hear the Lord guiding you to himself and show his plan for your life. Go to church and try to find people to talk to there. It's always good to have church community. Lord God bless you and your loved ones
