Turok was the only non-marvel dc comic I collected as a kid. I think they had a few of those 3 packs that were prevalent in the late 70s for it. Death Rattle #8 was the first Xenozoic tales appearance.
Titles worth checking out from around 1994-ish are Tyrant by Stephen Bissette and Age of Reptiles by Ricardo Delgado. I'm sure Dinosaur fans already have them, but they are 30 or so years old at this point, and I greatly enjoy them. Love Mark Schultz's work...
Good Evening Raph You have to love Dinosaurs. here in Australia, Gold Key Comics were always on the shelves in our Newsagents, I was very early in to Torok and his constant battle with the honkers. An exceptional run of wonderful shows shows. Cheers Al The Goldkeyfourcolorkidownunda
Gold Key and other publishers from the 70s are a lot tougher to come by these days. They are often the forgotten publishers from that time, and a lot collectors are just not aware of the many titles they published. I'd like to do a 70s video on other publishers, but I don't feel like I have enough comic books (yet) to do a proper video. One day!
Good Evening hat of course would be Turok not Torok . And the Gold Keycomics are getting very hard to get in good condition, and all are expensive. My friend Charliedogg and I comment to each other about the videos of comic hunting and the great Charlton and Gold Key titles left behind, with the comment from the hunter of "Nothing of interest" Oh Well! I would look greatly forward to one of your great videos on the subject. Cheers Al The Goldkeyfourcolorkidownunda
@@alancarr7718 I''m thinking of a 'Lost Comic books of the 1970s' video where I can talk about some of these under-appreciated books. I didn't think I could do a proper video, but after browsing through some of my boxes, I might have enough material.
Just subbed (thanks to the algorithm, actually dropping a couple of your vids into my feed). I am a HUGE fan of the Xenozoic/C&D titles, including the later C&D run by Topps, which goes off the rails a bit. Also a big, big fan of the Star-Spangled run and of course, Turok. I've got Xeno/C&D complete, and about 70% of the Star-Spangled "War That Time Forgot" run. I'm slowly assembling an original Dell/Gold Key Turok run, as it was a great memory from my childhood. Checking out the rest of your vid backlog as well. I collect a lot of oddball stuff, including westerns, romance, and almost every Charlton title out there. Thanks Raph-- great stuff! Your topic focus is right up my alley, as my collection is very silver/bronze-age heavy, as I grew up during the Silver/Bronze age. 😎👍
Those are some excellent and ambitious goals! Charlton titles will be an adventure, especially the romance titles. I have a handful of Charlton horror, and the Ditko stuff is great. Happy you've found my channel! I'm a bit all over the place in terms of videos and comic book collecting habits as you'll probably notice 😁
Very cool concept for a video. Had no idea that Cadillacs & Dinos was a reprint. That Marvel Fanfare 4-issue arc was definitely a classic tale. And yes, Marvel's Godzilla and Devil Dinosaur titles are worthwhile gems. Fun Fact: Kirby originally conceived Devil Dinosaur as an animated series. Also, an honorable mention that I'm sure you're aware of... During the late Silver Age, DC launched a title called DC SPECIAL, which was a giant-sized anthology series mostly containing reprints. But a few of them contained original stories, and a couple specifically featured dinosaurs and monsters: #21-"Superheroes War against the Monsters" and #27-"DANGER: Dinosaurs at Large" featuring Captain Comet.
I have a few of those DC Special issues, but I don't think I have any of the later issues. Captain Comet? Talk about a blast from the past. Those DC Special issues are a lot of fun and quite the mixed bag of stories.
Star Spangled War Stories have some awesome dino covers. As an honorable mention I would add Black Hole 4, a cool comic not a lot of people seem to have
Tremendous covers! I once thought about pursuing that run, but a few issues is enough (unless of course I come across some for really cheap). I would like to own a #90 one day though. I'll have to look into that Black Hole issue!
@@raph-retro-comics I don’t have 90. I def have 130 which I think is so cool and colorful. Great comics! And the Devil Dinosaur run is fun and pretty easy to complete, love those
Virtually none of these dinosaur, or dinosaur related, series are easy to find in decent condition (outside those 80's independents), because kids READ the heck out of these things! I love Devil Dinosaur and Godzilla, I adore Star Spangled War Stories, and I worship at the alter of Turok! If you could get Corben to draw dinosaurs, I couldn't shell out my money any faster! The comic book medium, along with the movies, is a sure thing for dinosaurs, yet are strangely absent today.... Nice episode!
I'm glad you showed Marvel Fanfare #1, the first four issues are among the best for story of the whole series but I remember how disappointed I was when I opened #3 to find that Michael Golden was not the artist. Ka-Zar actually first appeared as a pulp magazine character in 1936; clearly a Tarzan rip-off, he is orphaned after a plane crash in Africa kills his parents and is raised by a lion (with a very maternal streak it seems). The magazine only lasted three issues and there are no dinosaurs. I found Kirby's writing at Marvel in the 1970s to be inconsistent and the longer he wrote a title, the more he needed a scripter to translate his concepts into more effective writing and an editor who could say no to him to reign him in. A cheap way to read The War That Time Forgot is via DC's Showcase Presents volume, as long as you don't mind the art being in b/w. A top idea for a video Ralph. One title you could add to your list is Tom Mason's "Dinosaurs For Hire" from the late 80s and the 90s, although they are aliens who resemble smaller versions of well known Earth dinosaurs rather than being true dinosaurs.
Yeah, I would have liked to have seen Michael Golden do all four issues. Dave Cockrum is no slouch, but Golden was so good at drawing the Savage Land environment. I did like Paul Smith for issue #4 though. Thanks for the info on Ka-Zar, I didn't know he first appeared in a pulp. Can you imagine what it would have been like to be Kirby's editor at that time? 'Ummm...Mr. Kirby, can I bring up a few points, er...nevermind'.
I’ve always wanted to read Turok and wish there was an Omnibus series of the original run. All I had was a tiny free issue that was a shoe store promotion
I think it may be difficult to see this happen unfortunately. I bet the copyright for these older issues would be very muddled, but I could be wrong. A lot of these issues had single/multiple stories, and I believe the later issues had reprints as well so picking up a random issue can give you a good feel of what the series was like.
While not an Omnibus, Dark Horse did publish a series of hard cover archive editions of Turok ten years ago or so. Not sure how far they got along in the series, and they are out of print, but I have seen them turn up at cons and comic shops for decent prices.
Yep Cadillacs and Dinossurs 1 is on my wall
Terrific assortment of dinosaur books and titles!
Thanks! It's quite a wide spectrum, but something there for everyone!
I have many of the Star Spangled dinosaur covers. Thanks for highlighting these.
These are so awesome! I hope this sparks some interest in this great run.

Death Rattle #8! What a great name for a title! Thanks for the tip!

Mark Schultz is great! I'll have to keep an eye out for Tyrant and Age of Reptiles. I can't believe 1994 was thirty years ago...sigh.

Delighted to hear of the plan, anything you to highlight the "LOST" publishers.
Cheers Al

This is just the kind of content I needed. Love your videos man!
Glad you enjoyed this episode! I do have a soft spot for dinosaurs.

Something about big lizards chomping at things, just magical. Corben also drew a dinosaur tale in Twisted Tales #3, but alas, I don't have a copy.

Great overview. Who doesn't like dinosaurs???
Thanks Brian! Hmm...should have named our dog Dino.

If they md a Turok (jusarica park) type movie that would be great
Agreed! Turkey would be a perfect property for that type of movie. Even an ongoing TV series would be great.
