That second landing is a great example of why you need to keep training Woody, even when you feel you're good enough to fly from home. It's not the 9 times out of ten where everything is cool that you're training for, it's those unforseen circumstances where you need to calmly enact a pre-planned contingency because there's nobody in your ear to talk you down, and panic or indecision could be fatal.
Depends how high you are. Falling 200-300 feet or more with a 75lb motor on your back would be pretty nasty. That reserve chute is a very good idea though, and I hope he's properly trained on how to use that as well.
It takes about 15 flights to really get "comfortable" with that kind of flying. I've been flying since March. I love it. I saw a lot of wildlife today and found another piece of aircraft wreckage. There's nothing quite as great in terms of flying low and safe as powered paragliding. It's awesome!
Small question: I would rly love to learn this. While i'm not affraid of hights, i'm kind of scared of jumping out of an airplane. Yet, I would rly love to learn how to paraglide. Does that make sense? What would you advice?
What do you mean by, "nothing quite as great as flying low and safe on a PPG"? For one LOW and SAFE don't go well together :P I would argue airplane being much safer at low altitude. For example wind shear at 100 feet agl would scare you and could be very dangerous in an airplane, but on a PPG it could collapse the wing and with only 100ft to react, your reserve may not save you. What say you?
And @Airborne. Do you have a place that will do tandems near you? That would be my first suggestion. I went skydiving once, and was gagging the whole time, I was so scared. Next I did an aerobatic flight at SkyCombatAce and threw-up during the high G maneuver... Now I'm a private pilot - ASEL. :P I'm scared of heights but I enjoy flying lol.
@@FrenchConnectionV12 Fly a EN-A or B wing and collapses aren't near as risky- they pop right back out. I've experienced this several times. You won't need to throw the reserve the wing popping back out is faster and safer. While you don't want to be between 35ft and 100ft. Flying below 35 ft can be very safe.
I really commend Hope for her coming along with Woody on these trips. It can't be all that fun to drive 3 hours both ways when she's not going to be doing anything when they get there. That's a good person right there
Cody H is that true? I remember hearing him say something about this, but I didn't know she was being paid for it. I guess until I'm told otherwise, i'll take your word for it
I watched a lot of your more current videos before seeing this and I'm so glad you recorded your whole training process. As a recent CS grad and someone who's been obsessed with ultralight flight since a kid, your story is beyond inspirational and almost uncanny. Thank you so much for sharing it.
So first started following you from PKA stuff, then a few established paramotoring vids but have just come across this. This was lovely to watch and Hope is super wonderful too. What an amazing relationship you guys have! She's a real character.
I have never let out a yell of joy during a youtube video until now. As soon as you got some air on the first flight, I was literally yelling "HE'S DOING IT". It was like a inspirational movie scene, but I wasn't overjoyed at you actually flying(cause I knew you were gonna do that). I was euphoric just thinking about your thoughts throughout the first flight. I think this is the first vlog where you have accomplished a MAJOR goal. Yeah you had the stable and everything, but there was so much build up to this that the outcome was that much more awesome. Awesome vlog, Woody!
Woody, do you think it would be possible for you to attatch some sort of a microphone to the helmet so that we could hear what you say to Marco (obviously it would just be your side of the conversation), and eventually you may even be able to do live talks when in the air where you talk us through what is going on, as it is going on?
Congratulations Woody! Becoming a pilot is one of the best things ever and you have a great team up there to learn from (and a gorgeous spot). Keep flying!
MY MAN WOODY! I didn't think I would, but when you took off, and got that high, I just got so hype. It felt like we both have been delayed for weeks. That was awesome, I can not wait until these flying videos start!! Congratulations man!
I didn't realize how much work went into being an instructor. Damn, these guys have to make sure each and everyone of there students, take off and land safely. That is a lot of responsibility for a person to carry, especially when the student is relying on "EVERYTHING" that instructor says and does. I could see the emotion in your instructors face and movements when he was prepping you, two minutes before you took your first flight. Keep flying bro. Keep living life on your terms. God Bless
Woody, after so many videos and PKAs of you talking about this, it almost feels like a proud parent moment seeing you finally fly. Congratulations man!
+AiRSCOTTKiNG LeBron left a team with a bunch of scrubs and then left again to fulfill a promise he made to his home state and the city of Cleveland. KD jumped the bandwagon to the team that eliminated him and left behind one of the top 5 players in the NBA
Woohoo! Go Woody!! Was fixed on this video. You had 250% of my attention. :) Glad you will stay at the school until you are confident. and remember..... Any landing you can walk away from, is a good landing.
That was dope af Woody, way to go! I bet that felt amazing. We shouldn't of ever doubted you, not that I really did, I knew you would fly. This was easily the most entertaining vlog I've ever watched, period. Way to go man and congratulations on a successful first day as a pilot.
When you takeoff for the first time and the beat drops, yeaaahhhh buddddy! That a boy Woody! Paramotoring looks fun as hell! I could understand what you mean about only being on a 2 after 1st takeoff. It has to take a minute to get comfortable in a flying chair a few 100 feet in the air lol.
Inspirational! I have been kiting my wing all month and should order my motor this week. I think my first flight is just around the corner so it was great to see yours!!!!
Thanks for your honesty and candid takes on your first flight. I’m planning on training for my first flight next month and this video is extremely helpful in not only getting the POV from a first time flyer, but hearing that it’s ok to be scared.
I was actually cheering for you when you took off, Woody. Great achievement! I'm looking forward to some onboard audio and video when you're up and running out of your back yard.
This video really helped me. I learned to fly with the Martins last month. My first flight scared me so much I didn't enjoy flying until my 6th flight. My classmates were super stoked and loving it from their first flights which made me wonder if I was meant to fly. It helps to see I was not the only one to feel scared during their first flight.
Woody, I am so happy for you. You will never forget your first flight. I love how you talked about loving the next moment more than the last. You will do great in this sport. Southern Skies is a great training facility and you are in good hands with them. I know you had talked about possibly going to the beach to fly. I highly recommend doing that. I flew this weekend at the beach for the first time and it was amazing. There are no thermals to worry about as the wind has no obstructions and is always super smooth. Good luck to you in the coming months! I can't wait to see more flying videos from you.
Nice work. I haven't tried paramotoring, but having a few thousand unpowered parachute landings (mostly skydives) I saw you cut the engine on the second landing and thought, "alright... arms up... wing level... welcome to the party"
Congratulations on your first flight! Takes me back to my first solo as a glider pilot, I needed that today, had an horrible day, great video, editing, voiceover and Hope-commenting haha. If this was TV this ep would've won an Emmy. Welcome to the sky! Awesome experience! Thanks for sharing! Just about done with my ground training and hope to take to the air when my prop comes in next week. Thanks for giving your viewpoint! Oh, and loved the way you and Hope play off of each other!!
Thanks for sharing this! I'm considering trying this myself and it was great to have you share so much about how you were feeling/thinking going through all of this.
Awesome going back in time and seeing this; how far you've come! I’m soaking up the growing pains and learning vicariously through you and other (now) great paramotorists as I prepare myself to fly as well. Love it. Love it. Did I mention that I love it?
When clipping on your leg straps, run your fingers behind to make sure you didn't clip some fabric in the fasteners. If unnoticed it could cause the fastener to not lock and it could unclip.
I am newly interested in the sport. I have spoken with a trainer, watched many many youtube videos, some of yours too Woody. This is the first one to me, that make me nervous and extremely excited all at the same time! I can't wait to do this! Just gotta figure how I can afford it, Thanks Woody for sharing your first flight! It's awesome!
Congrats dude!! Beautiful launch. :D

@@Nocturnes1984 I would advice that it's way less scary than the initiation of skydiving because you take off from the ground.

Anyone else get a little emotional when he finally lifted off the ground?
honestly, yeah
I yelled of joy.
I stood up and clapped
I was like "Yes! He did it!"
yeah i totally did.
I updated the outro with the new footage. Suddenly being two feet in the air doesn't rank among the cool things I've done anymore. #FeelsGood
Great video Woody!
Stay safe Woody ! You got a Family to take care of.
Also I think a First Person view from a GoPro on your head would be cool
this is making me anxious watching a fan on your back propel you into the air

This is her summer "job". She's getting paid to sit in the passenger seat for 6 hours and film woody for a half hour.

Big ups liquid Richard
@@MrWorsterLike biggest of all ups.
Your editing is getting better!
I think the "editing with every beat" thing has a place but it's a little too much for every video. I just cooled it off a bit. :)

I guess you would not be able to understand a whole lot due to the air movement
no its possible. think of motor vloggers
needed a chest gopro for sure

I love your honest and descriptive account. Great vid and your girl is so totally supportive and genuinely excited for you. Nice one pilot!
Great Job woody! As a pilot I can understand that alert, almost nervous sensation felt when going solo for the first time. Keep it up!
The jump cuts look much better when done like this! Keep getting better Woody!
I really like this duo with woody and hope !
I'am happy for you woody !
Holy crap that second landing was serious business woody. I am so happy you are allright! Much love from Finland!
"Who's next?"- woody

Nice Woody! You had a goal to be able to fly and you stuck with it, now you're a pilot. Well done!
I usually don't watch the vlogs.. But the PKA with boogie got me interested in this. Pretty cool. Good job Woody.
Good job woody! We're proud of you for not falling from the sky and dying. We kinda like you around here.
