I have this Kowa MT600 tachometer, it sometimes reads the spark signal twice as you see clearly when hes measuring idle speed it shows 2000 RPM from afar then when he gets it closer to the spark plug it reads 4000 RPM at the same speed. So basically the actual speed is half what he is showing. It is a moded engine alright but it seems to have a maximum rpm of 6300.
I agree 12k rpm would sound a lot faster 6k sounds about right there is no way this was spinning that fast think of sport bikes those rev at 12k up to 14k and they scream you can tell they are spinning that fast this is definately around 6500 or so
Used to do Jr. Drag racing with 5 hp Briggs and Stratton blocks ... the stick ones reved about 7200. A generator holds 3600. This was Reving beyond 3600 but less than 7200. Sounds like maybe 6000 by ear.
These engines run at 3,500 max stock so even with aftermarket parts I wouldn't push much past 8k if you want it to last but I'll admit I'm not specialist on the subject
@makypunk021 You will have 2 settings on your Rpm Counter, one will be for 2 Strokes which fire every stroke, one will be for 4 Stroke which fire every other stroke. You will have your counter on the 2 cycle counter, so it's doubling what your engine is actually reving too. Do you understand now?
bore it out, get an aluminum flywheel, billet con rod, crankshaft upgrade, upgrade your valve springs to a stronger pressure, get a shaved head, for more compression, remove the governor, I assume it already is
whatts in the engine so far and for starters heres a list run on higher octane use a forge domed piston for higher compression ratio use a lighter flywheel for higher bottom end torque denso sparkplugs for higher combustion buy racing piston rings and run it on mobil 1 synthetic file top and sides of carbeurator hole (on the block) (increases intake thus creating more horse and buy a mikuni carbeurator.............. and this list should give you another 10hp

My gx390 exploded 10 minutes after i removed governor, valwes shattered piston and the whole thing exploded into milion pieces. And by removing governor i vioded my warranty too. Wooohooo.
@makypunk021 do you know what "load on an engine" means? load on an engine is not that it is bolted to something, its that you have the engine powering something like a kart or pump or whatever.
On that motor every time the piston goes up it sparks so the electric tach reads twice the actual speed. And you should run it in methanol or nitromethane. You need bigger jets for the carburetor with those fuels.

trilafide RPM, or rotations per minute, is calculated by how many times the crankshaft can make a complete 360 degree rotation in a minute. Every time the crank turns 360 degrees the spark plug fires once. Which means in a 4 stroke cycle the spark plug also fires on the exhaust cycle. Every time the spark plug fires, it's one revolution.

They don't even have NR cams able to do that I think the highest speed spin in is about 7000 rpm to 8500 one tip never open rev a race or any engine with out a load hit it and dropped it

Crank driven magneto engines fire the plug every revolution, so it fires on the exhaust stroke as well (waste spark). So, this engine is actually running at half the indicated RPM.
What all you forget...this honda engines have "wasted spark" it "fires" like a two stroke engine every revolution. To measure it right, you have to set it as "two stroke engine" otherwise you measure the double rpm like in this case ;-)...

I don't agree with in a 4 stroke crank spins twice per cycle, it spins 1/2 turn per cycle. Look at it this way, 4 stroke is the same as 4 cycle. On the first stroke ( intake ) 1/2 turn, second stroke ( compression ) 1/2 turn = 1 spin, third stroke ( power ) 1/2 turn = 1 1/2, forth stroke ( exhaust ) 1/2 turn that is a total of 2 spins. The spark fired at x numbers degrees before tdc on the compression stroke, leading into a power stroke, and also fired at x number of degrees on the exhaust stroke before tdc. That second spark does not matter to how the engine runs because its during the stroke that the fuel is already burned, leading to nothing. It is a wasted ignition. That's why the Honda GX 390 in this reached 1/2 the rpm claimed. If that engine had reached a true 12660 rpm, he should apply for a job at the National Aerospace and Space Administration ( NASA ), for real. The engine ignition still fires once per revolution, like a two stroke but completes combustion in two revolutions. Unless it's an atkinson design (which it isn't) the wasted spark still fires once per revolution. If you ever ran a 4 stroke string trimmer, they sound a bit like that between 8000 and 12000 revolutions per minute.
That is so false its funny because im sure you dont have enough to make it hit 12660 rpm without exploding .Even i had a mini cup moded gx390 and that topped out at 7500 rpm

Not even close to 12000 I've revved my gx200 to 9800 and it sounded almost double the rpm. What cam and valve springs do you have?
It says 12k because the flywheel setup make its spark on exhaust and combustion stroke so it sparks twice as much, the reader will read every spark.
I have built a Honda Gx390 useing a Alunium flywheel its so light that you have to idle it higher then the stock cast iron which is much heaver.

by the way your pulling it to start that looks like it has very high compression, do u know the compression ratio?

Those GX engine would desintegrate at 12000rpm. Yours sound like to be revving at 4500-5000 maximum

more hp you asked, well forced induction sounds like what you need, find a small turbo plumb it up and you'll probably make near 80hp if not more, lol

Actually, these engines run at a max 4000 rpm. (stock)
And 2-stroke engines can easily go above 12000 rpm. (weed eaters do)

looks like yo selected 2stroke on your measuring device. 1 zylinder, 4stroke would be the right setting. about 6000 are more realistic
