spider-man 2 might be the BEST spider-man movie! (reaction)

  • In today's video, we react to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 from 2004 with Toby Maguire as Spider-Man and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock. We cry as Aunt May reminds us of our own parent-figures, groan as Pete fumbles the Mary-Jane bag (again) and laugh as J. Jonah Jameson continues to hate everything about us. What movie should we watch next?

Otto and his wife are very cute. The fucking usher at the play, not so much. I'm sure somebody's brought it up already, but that's Bruce Campbell, and he's in every one of these movies in some bit role. Perks of being old friends with Raimi. lol
Sorry, babe, we can't claim Raimi-verse MJ as one of ours 😭
You're 100% right, Raimi got his start in horror, and the arm scene is a whole throwback to his slashery comfort zone
The jumpscare was so good, and the fakeout outro was _perfect_ 😂
You just know those puppeteers were having a great time with Ock's arms *claw pinchies* lol
The train battle is so dope, even all these years later. And same, the moments where you see how much Spider-Man means to people are some of my favorite.
Not you calling Raimi on his kinks in the middle of this big climactic moment... 😂
Right there with you about Otto, and Alfred Molina's fantastic performance. Top-tier stuff.
Another great one, Tofu. Funny as always, and you never fail to elevate the experience with how much of yourself you bring to these. Even when it hurts and my eyes are swimming and I just wanna give you a hug. 🫂 I would _love_ to watch a Spider-Man 3 reaction whenever you get a chance. As ever, Tor, this was a delight to view and a joy to behold. From the always on point editing to your usual sweet, charming, funny, and thoughtful commentary, this was - no surprise - well worth the wait. I've said it before but these videos are genuinely among my absolute favourite content on all of TH-cam. In fact, aside from your gameplay videos, I'm not sure there's anything on this site I look forward to as much as I do your movie reactions.
You know, "Peter's just struggling on, like, every level in his life right now," might be the most evergreen statement one can make about Peter Parker. Sometimes it's not as bad as here, sometimes it's way worse than this, but in both the comics and adaptations, it often feels like he exists wholly to suffer. It can definitely help to humanize him in the face of his powers, but the comics especially can definitely over do it at times. Sometimes you just wanna see a character you like get to be happy, you know? Even if Marvel editorial often seems dead set against any such experiences for Peter.
As for this movie specifically, though, aside from the continued presence of James Franco, there's not a lot I can complain about. I also saw this one in theatres, and while the first will always be important for being the starting point, this one was definitely my favourite at the time. Truth be told, this was probably my favourite superhero movie in general pre-MCU. The returning cast is still great and feel completely at home in their roles, and Alfred Molina as Octavius was such a tremendous addition. Far more than Norman was, Otto is such a tragic character here. He's a good person genuinely trying to make the world a better place, and his life and all his efforts just go up in smoke in the blink of an eye. And Molina does such good job of conveying that sense of hope punctuated by tragedy. You really feel how his situation could just break a man, even without the influence of the arms' AI. I think the biggest strength of these two films is the willingness of both the writing and the cast to take things seriously. At a time where superhero movies often felt like they had to either poke fun at themselves or drain themselves of colour and fun, these movies said, "What if we let Spider-Man wear a colourful, comic-accurate costume *AND* take himself, his emotions, and the danger he and his love ones end up in seriously?" As someone who grew up on the very sincere and earnest Marvel and DC animated shows of the '90s, these two films very much hit a sweet spot for me in that regard that stuff like the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Nolan Batman films never came near.
In my comment for your Spider-Man (2002) reaction I mentioned there was a scene in this one that was, "visually one of the most Sam Raimi scenes in any of his Post-Evil Dead films". That, as you could probably guess now, was the (would be) surgery scene. The camera angles, the editing, the screams, the people being dragged into the darkness while their fingernails leave trails in the floor - it's all very Evil Dead - and especially Evil Dead 2 - coded. It was both weird and cool, incidentally, watching Raimi go from Evil Dead to Spider-Man. I assume it was similar to what other people felt watching Peter Jackson go from films like Meet the Feebles and Dead Alive/Braindead to Lord of the Rings. I didn't know about Jackson's earlier work myself until post-LotR, but it's definitely a similar jump in tone and genre.
One last thing, both in private or here and on social media, I'm never sure how best to handle talking about your dad. My experiences with both parents and losing them was... *very* different from what you experienced with your dad, and I always kind of worry about putting too much focus on such a sensitive topic at the wrong time. But I am sure about this, Tor: I love listening to you talk about your dad. It might make my eyes get a touch (or a lot) watery - especially if you get teary-eyed yourself - but it always and without fail warms my heart to hear the love in your voice when you speak of him and to get those little peeks into the beautiful relationship you two shared. My heart forever goes out to you over your loss, Tor, but I'm so glad you got to have the time with him that you did. I can't imagine he'd have traded that time for literally anything in the entire world.
Like I said at the start, this was video was a delight. You are as always fun, insightful, and engaging to watch and listen to, and of course you look absolutely amazing - you know full well what I think of that beautiful natural hair of yours and how lovely that qipao looks on you. I'm very excited to eventually see you revisit No Way Home now that you actually know the Raimi versions of Norman and Otto. Then there's Spider-Man 3... well, suffice to say I have *a lot* of thoughts on that one, and I do look forward to hearing what you think of it yourself. Thank you for this lovely, lovely video, Tor. Whatever movie or game it ends up being, I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next time.

5:22 Betty was actually Peters first girlfriend in the comics. Classic high schooled romance, dated for a while after Peter became a photographer at the Bugle but they later broke up but remained close friends. They met earlier in the comics, For the film they decided to have Peter get bit at 17 instead of 15 like the comics. And MJ was already a love interest in these films but I guess they hint a little at Betty and Peter flirting in this film.
Peter's first serious relationship wasn't until he started College and met Gwen Stacy who is often regarded as his first real relationship. Then MJ was introduced but they kept her face hidden from the audience until a few years when we the reader met MJ for the first time along with Peter. Pretty crazy looking back that MJ, Harry, Norman, and Gwen were not introduced until Peter started College a few years after his origin comics.

Also, I love Spider-man as a superhero because his power level is great for having him be powerful (or super, if you will) but without having to go through absurd lengths to create a threat that can oppose him. He's strong, but his strength has limits. He can get hurt, tired, he can bleed, and it makes him so much more beliveable as a hero you can root for.

The real question I have always asked myself is why Peter choosed to bring Norman Osborn's body home, knowing that given the importance of this man it is a place that is guarded, maybe monitored with cameras, when he could have just made sure to separate it from the Green Goblin costume and put Norman's body somewhere visible, or even make it look like he was killed by the Green Goblin (since the Green Goblin Green killed the members of the Osborn Society Council, it would have been logical for him to go after Norman). So like this, no worries and everything resolves itself, without taking any unnecessary risks.
OR even, let's be crazy, he brings back Norman's body as he does, but he disarms Harry at the end of 1 to EXPLAIN to him that during his fight with the Green Goblin, Norman was present but that he didn't unfortunately not able to save him but that he was able to get rid of the Green Goblin. By showing him and proving that in any case Norman's fatal wound really came from the front of the glider. (even if it's something that Harry should have seen... or at worst the doctors who took care of the body and had to tell him, but despite that he thinks in a totally stupid way that Spiderman would have killed him, and then come and drop off his body at his house, which is totally stupid! For a guy who is supposed to be quite intelligent, that really pissed me off...)
In my opinion, they should have done something different if they really wanted Harry to be angry with Spiderman, because nothing is going well like this and i don't like to see Harry et Peter argue for something so stupid... it's a shame, but hey, that's the only fault of this trilogy!

Hey Tori. ☺️ I just want to say that I love your videos. I also lost my dad suddenly 2 years ago now. I was the one who found him. And I lost my mum 5 years ago too. So it's been really difficult. Idk I just wanted to say that you don't need to apologise for that tangent. It was really sweet of you to think of your dad. And actually allowed me to cry a little bit too. It felt like I had this connection and we were grieving and telling stories together for a little while. I have a hard time accepting what's happened and crying doesn't come as easy- I think because to do so would be accepting what's happened and I don't want to. But I found your heartfelt emotions and compassion and willingness to be vulnerable there to really be amazing and help me too. It allowed me a moment to grieve and think about how my dad would get me little treats and chocolate bars and things, just because. Just to do something nice for me. Idk I'm rambling 😂😅I guess I just appreciate that moment as it was nice to feel like someone gets it and it allowed me a moment to actually cry a bit. Which I think I needed. Thanks. Anyway I hope you're doing well. Grief is a difficult thing and I hope we both can learn to live with it. Best wishes.

Another insta-watch, right when I needed a good video too. There's just so much humanity in these films, even if it's cringe-inducing or awkward. But life is awkward and messy like that. Aunt May, Octavius and his wife, absolutely love just seeing them act like humans. And of course, your stories always add so much to the reaction, we stan tangents here on this channel :')

Raymond, the research associate/assistant/technician is played by Daniel Dae Kim, which you acknowledge. Now, those of a certain age would remember him as Jin from Lost, Chin Ho Kelly in the reboot of Hawaii Five-O, Dr.Han from season 2 of the Good Doctor (which he is the executive producer for,) and from his role as Ozai in Netflix’s Avatar The Last Airbender.

Fun fact from the official Spider-Man 2 graphic novel: during the scene where Doc Oc fights Peter on top of the building he kept losing consciousness but the arms kept waking him up. Remember, Otto is just an average man while Peter is super-human. Same goes for the train scene. Peter was hitting Otto so hard that even the arms began to feel pain which is why they decided to sabotage the train so they could get away. Peter's Spider-man was a straight menace!

I've been actually going back to watch your gaming play-throughs recently. So when this popped up, I was like, 'Hell yeah!' Love your content! Also, don't ever feel like you need to apologize for stopping and talking about your dad. For me personally, it's very touching to hear you speak about him. I lost my dad when I was 19, about 8 years ago, from suicide, and the pain sometimes is so fresh it feels like it just happened. It will get better though. Also, not sure if you were joking about the autism thing, but for someone like me with high-functioning autism, I'm always on the lookout for people who are similar. Anyway, gonna go back to your Tales from the Borderlands play-through. Will be back for the next movie review! Thanks again for everything you do 🤗

First off: excellent thumbnail image choice. You nailed it.
Second off: excellent outfit choice. Big fan.
Third off: YOU HAVE NATURAL HAIR? My mind is blown.
Glad you got around to watching yet another one of my childhood favorites. In a world where comic book films have started to become a little paint by numbers, its refreshing to see a movie like this that has such a unique style, thanks to Raimi, and his horror background. I love those elements. I love the fights. Today those fights would have been much larger and crazier but I appreciate how scaled back but still impactful these ones are. Also, anytime I hear Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head I instantly think of this movie. Every time.
This was a fun video, as usual, but the insert shot of you falling in Insomniacs Spider-Man 2 was *chefs kiss*. Great inclusion lol. I also really loved that you were so dedicated to the bit that you actually closed out of the movie. You easily could have faked it but no, you really did it.

    2:06 this a great start 😬
7:07 it’s funny that you inadvertently spoiled this moment for me the other day. you talked about crying at it and in my head I was like, ‘haven’t seen that video yet!’
7:31 trust me when I say you take after him that way. you are so incredibly generous. you don’t hesitate to offer to help your friends and it’s kind of a humbling experience to have someone always ready to help in whatever way they can. your dad sounds like he was a kind, loving man and his daughter turned out just the same
9:30 don’t ever apologize for your tangents. those are little glimpses into who you are and if someone doesn’t want to hear them then they’re missing out on knowing an amazing human
10:58 the PTSD i just got
11:19 gonna screenshot this real quick
21:19 sometimes men have performance issues
23:35 didn’t let me down. knew you’d recognize him
24:26 if it’s so sad, what’s with the grin?
    24:34 …..no, I don’t think you are
28:31 love a dramatic moment followed by your gusher struggles
31:35 that’s how I walk when I wake up in the morning
    36:59 the change-up 😂
38:11 maybe you just have a dirty mind?
    40:11 you’re stupid and adorable
42:10 all that complaining about them not kissing and then your gonna talk about the LIGHTING during the actual kiss? you are unique
43:45 I think that’s exclusive to the game. it’s mostly just a lab accident with the arms
this was so much fun. Spider-Man 2 really is one the best superhero movies of all time. can’t wait to keep the Spidey journey going with you

Childhood movie right here... It feels a bit strange to me that this movie is basically *20* *years* *old* now...
This film legitimately has some of the absolute best and most heartfelt and memorable moments in the ever expanding genre of superhero movies... From Peter Parker trying to deliver pizzas as Spider-Man, to the entirely original Mr. Ditkovitch landlord character (who wasn't even in the original comics...) who's constantly asking for his rent, to the horror hospital scene with Dr. Otto Octavius and his robotic octopus arms, to the entire bank fight scene between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, to the references to the "Spider-Man: No More" storyline directly from the comics, to the "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" scene, to Peter Parker saving a little girl from a burning building without his powers, to the small sweet scene where Ursula offers Peter a piece of chocolate cake, to Aunt May's motivational speech scene where she talks about how everybody loves a hero, to the hilarious scene where Peter tries to get his powers back but he just ends up breaking his back, to the scene where Peter *does* finally get his powers back and he's fully back in action again as Spider-Man => 34:27, to the entire train fight sequence between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, to this little moment right here => 35:23, to Spider-Man stopping the runaway train before it plunges into the New York Harbor and the train passengers helping him out and promising to keep his identity a secret right afterwards, and all the way up to the final swing that ends the movie => 42:15. Just... *so* *much* to remember about this *iconic* movie...
This movie definitely has a *lot* of my favorite moments in a superhero movie and it definitely holds a special nostalgic place in my heart along with the Spider-Man 2 movie tie-in video game on playstation 2 that released the day before this movie came out.
I *really* enjoyed this reaction commentary Tofu and I'm *so* glad you were entertained and enjoyed the movie too.

His initial reluctance to be with MJ wasn't out of cowardice, he was trrying to protect her.
