So cool! More vintage reviews are always welcome as it can be hard to find info on some older models lost in time. I love all the recent AO releases of their vintage line and bought a bunch. They're so good quality and look great on! Being from Rhode Island I'm proud to wear something local and historic. 😎 JFK himself wore the 51mm "Demi-Amber/Polarized True Color" or, simply, Tortoise/Grey. From the old pictures they were so beautiful and unique I'm shocked AO hasn't released a pair just like his. As far as I know the only one who still makes that color combo is Shuron. I bought their modern Sidewinder which was made in JFK's era and they give that same appearance and are gorgeous. 😀
I have always thought that vintage glasses are far superior over modern glasses. They were high quality, neatly designed and priced reasonably as well. When looking at old pictures of our great grandparents I notice that their vintage haircut, glasses and outfit just commands respect. They just appear like people with high standards. Love my new tortoise saratogas but was disappointed that they couldn’t quite capture the same look the vintage Kennedy tortoise had. The old ones seemed to have had more of a reddish/orange tint to them whereas the new ones have more of a yellow/brown look.
I can’t comment on the quality of the vintage issue, but the re-issue stands as my favorite shades. Similar styling to the original Wayfarer, but with more refined details, better comfort, and(as far as I’m aware) no compromise to the brand’s provenance. Plus they still have a little bit of that if-you-know-you-know quality about them. Even if the quality doesn’t prove to be as high as that of the original (does anything pass that test these days), I’ll still happily buy another pair. I can only imagine how enjoyable the vintage model must be to own and wear. Great review!
I have 3 pairs of the vintage ones that I bought from a thrift store on cape cod $50 each (Small size black true color, larger black calobar, and larger tortoise calobar) . That was before people knew these were the “actual JFK glasses”. I weirdly love how heavy they are
Very surprised to learn that the new model temples are thicker/wider than the vintage. Excellent info luving the comparison to the moderns Saratoga which are wonderful even with the non glass lens
I really like the vintage reviews, i hope you do more . love the original Saratoga`s & they look really cool . I am not keen on the re-release of the model as they don`t stay true to the original style . I went with a pair of Christopher Cloos x Brady Espresso for that vintage 50`s style .
@@ShadeReview Shame the new version isn't glass. Nylon has its advantages, but I prefer scratch resistance. Lasts longer. Oliver Peoples Ollis Sun is similar and uses glass lenses.
I'm definitely interested in vintage reviews. This one in particular is an absolute must and I'm glad you did it. First of all it clearly shows that the vintage version is just superior overall, including aesthetically. I don't know why AO couldn't reproduce that exact version and had to make changes instead. Can it even be considered a re-relase if the model is not the same? I think not. If the original version were available I would totally buy 5 pairs in different colorways. I think it would be fun if you talk more about how you got your vintage pair and how much you paid for it. Also, how can you know that the lenses in the frames are "original" and were not replaced at some point?
