For anyone crying about how music back then was better than today - keep in mind this was filmed at the height of disco. There is music like this being made today, you just have to look for it because it's not mainstream.

The black man was a walking blacksmith -- traveled from place to place with his tools to fix horses, other metallic items -- tools ( he could make them as well), railings, fences. His real name was Uncle Seymour Washington -- 1896-1979 RIP.
Back in 1975, the director would've been smart to film an hour of Seymour's philosophy of life and not just the 5 minutes he did film. Interesting dude, I can see why Townes befriended him and took him along for his movie.

I’ve felt music hit my soul and turn it to water. It’s the same as when you see your newborn babies eyes and hear the cries. Feel the depth of love for the first time holding your woman in bed in the dark. It’s all a vibration. Two bodies in vibration, this music and words and his singing frequencies matching up and going to a higher level within that guys soul and he feels with the character in that song. It’s overwhelming really, but in the best way and you live for it. Could just be chemicals in the brain too, but I don’t think so.

I think it's an exercise in futility to say one songwriter is the best. For one thing, you can gush over one but in 5 years you'll have outgrown them. I used to think Dylan was so wonderful. Now, I look at his lyrics and he's got some fizz but it's all negative. There's a cool vid somewhere shows Dylan sitting around with some guys bellyachin about one thing and another, cruddy music today, cruddy beer, whatever, and this guy in the back (Donovan) sez lemme see the guitar and sings his "To Sing For You". The whole mood in the room totally changed. Even Dylan looked happy for a minute. Then he got the guitar back and sang some depressing dreariness and it was back the way it was.

@Michael Seawell between Dylan and Townes it’s not even close. The sad thing is Townes envied Dylan and had no idea how much better his lyrics are. Dylan couldn’t shine Townes’ worn out leather boot no matters how many silly rhymes he sang or wrote.

Born in 1896. I can't even imagine the things Uncle Seymour witnessed in his life. Changing nations, borders, technology- upheavals of ways of life and global order. The World Wars, the great depression, it's almost a shame seeing this footage now that Uncle Seymour didnt get his own documentary. A breed of man no more, when lyrics weren't just lyrics and many of the things sung about and stated were probably actually realized in this man's life and those around him.

To make others feel that there's more to this world than suffering and desolation, even if it's only to suffer and to be alone, but sharing that same pain with others, that at least would make us feel not so lonesome.

Townes was my father.. and I miss him dearly..
Such a beautiful soul, such haunting and perfect guitar picking and lyrics, not much this man hasn’t been thru or hasn’t lived..
Not father in the parental sense, but in the sense that he shaped me, taught me, helped me grow into the man I am today.
Distilled the importance of self love, mental strength and to be wise. Also taught me how to drink, fight and love.
    Thanks pops,
See ya when I get to our mother, the mountain, and for the sake of the song, and all the High, Low and in Between moments in life, I’ll be sure to take a deep breath when I stand At My Window, just shortly after lacing up my Flyin’ Shoes, and breathe.
Then I’ll hop in that ole Rose Pink Cadillac with the Dead Flowers next to me, check the Rear View Mirror, load up some Road Songs and set off into the void that is, No Deeper Blue, than the one in my soul.

This house looks so much like the house I was born in and lived until I started school, but Grandma lived there for many more years. My Uncle Tex was a real cowman, I expect he and Mr. Washington would have a lot in common and would have truly enjoyed each others company. My mom passed two years ago, the last her generation, now I and my siblings are the old timers, those waitin around to die.
Something I realized many years ago, doesn't matter what we do, what our station in life s, we are all waitin around to die. It is the fate all humanity shares regardless of everything else. The important thing is to have an idea of what happens after you die. Find God, accept Christ before you hit that 11th hour. God Bless.

    Lyrics of this wonderful song:
    Sometimes I don't know where
This dirty road is taking me
Sometimes I can't even see the reason why
    I guess I keep a-gamblin'
Lots of booze and lots of ramblin'
It's easier than just waitin' around to die
One time, friends, I had a ma
    I even had a pa
He beat her with a belt once 'cause she cried
She told him to take care of me
    Headed down to Tennessee
It's easier than just waitin' around to die
I came of age and I found a girl
    In a Tuscaloosa bar
She cleaned me out and hit in on the sly
I tried to kill the pain, bought some wine
    And hopped a train
Seemed easier than just waitin' around to die
    A friend said he knew
    Where some easy money was
We robbed a man, and brother did we fly
The posse caught up with me
And drug me back to Muskogee
It's two long years I've been waitin' around to die
    Now I'm out of prison
I got me a friend at last
He don't drink or steal or cheat or lie
    His name's Codine
He's the nicest thing I've seen
Together we're gonna wait around and die
Together we're gonna wait around and die

@Derek Long: Thank you for pointing that out. I heard the repeated lines and wondered whether Townes slipped up on the lyrics. The verse makes sense now. What a stunning, heartbreaking clip.

It was morning and Townes drank 3/4 of a big bottle of Bourbon Whiskey. I understand Townes' mistake, definitively!

"He beat her with a belt once, cause she cried." The best line in any song, ever. Heart-rending.

This is cut from the real. Real life real people and real dam good writing. Not to many people really understand the impact this man left. Probably not even him.

It's funny that this film was about country artists who worked outside the Nashville system, yet in the case of Townes and others, their songs were and are revered by their more successful mainstream contemporaries. Modern country songs and performers are barely recognizable from their antecedents. The people making the best, most authentic country music are indie performers.

I'm crying every time I listen to this, just like his friend. No shame. This is pure emotion put into music and I can seriously relate. I'm crying and it's December 22, 2023.
