When you formulate paint you have to take into account many peoples preferences. Some people like high structure so it applies and does not run on vertical surfaces , some like lower structure so it flows out well on horizontal surfaces. You have to then consider how long the paint is sitting in the can as all paints can increase in structure over time. So you may get a tin fresh from filling or many months after. Also these paints can be used in mixing schemes. So the paint is filled into tins but when they want an off white colour so additional colourant is added. So you have white paint and pastel paints all from the same paint formulation. The addition of the colourants having a small affect on the overall application properties.
So getting a paint that everyone loves straight from the tin is quite difficult 😀.
But I think aiming for a little more structure you have the option of adding a little water or additive to cut the viscosity gives you more flow and levelling if needed. But having it flow too well, its more difficult to increase the structure.

@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator It has been tried. Both use different technologies to get their properties.
The Touchgard has the special acrylic binder that resists staining, especially hand fat, and the Scuffgard has its special extenders that resists scuffing and abrasion. Initially I did try and combine both technologies but was finding it difficult to combine the effects and get a perfect film quality. So to launch the products we did it separately. But I have learnt a little more since then.
A paint is the sum of its parts. Different ingredients impart different properties, some competing against each other.
Like previously mentioned, its difficult to have a paint that can have the structure to hold up on vertical surfaces but have excellent flow and levelling. Its hard to have a paint that is quick drying but also does not leave brush marks etc. We try our best though to optimise the paints for everyone's needs 😀.
But if there is enough interest I can relook at the formulation.
Has Paul mentioned we have a Touch Gard Sleepy Gloss being developed? This is a gloss version of Touchgard Satin. But it will not be as high a gloss as Acrylic High Gloss. But will give superior had fat / stain resistance properties of the Touch Gard Satin so ideal for doors and banisters and trim in high trafficked area's. It is possibly one to consider for a future gloss demonstration 😀.

      @@MartinRichardson-qw8nd that sounds interesting.
We used touch guard satin on a job a few weeks ago.
Went on lovely.. but Brian who works for us, said the same as me . It's a shame it's not got more sheen to it, as when dried it's looks quite flat, like an eggshell than a satin.
So if a soft gloss is coming that might be the answer as a satin with sheen... About a 40%+ level

    Interesting Phil 👍🏽
The trade off is always has been, even with oil based finishes, the pigment to binder ratio, the more pigment the better opacity...the more binder, the higher the sheen.
You must have loads of different brands there now, would you consider a once an for all opacity test?... separate tests for undercoats and glosses over black and white striped panels.
I bet there isnt a wb gloss out there that cover on two....but it would be interesting to see which ones needed 4🤔

I once sprayed two coats of exterior Zinsser Allcoat black gloss on a side panel of a kitchen cabinet and the sheen came out a treat. Admittedly it was the one and only time I've done this as not a painter. Is it possible that exterior water based gloss (especially Zinsser) produces a better sheen?
