Very enjoyable watching someone who never plays the format wade into Pioneer/Explorer, even if the format doesn't feel particularly good right now. A real treat watching the constant moments of realization throughout the video as you recognize what the opponent is trying to do.
Nummy has the "limited" mindset. He just goes for the most valuey or the most lethal play always, not always based on the strategy of his deck or the opp deck. I always learn a lot by watching these games.
Very well played. Super fun watching you catching the swing of the deck as it was going haha.
13 mana on turn 2 is hilarious
2 more and emrakul? Sounds fun
@@jimthesalad There are three hands that could do that in this exact deck(let's say it's emrakul instead of elesh norn):
Leylinex3, Sunken Citadel, Nykthos, Kiora, Emrakul(19 mana T2)
Leylinex4, Sunken Citadel, Nykthos, Kiora, Emrakul(27 mana T2)
Leylinex3, untapped green source(16), mana elf(8), nykthos, kiora, emrakul(21 mana T2)
I wish I was smart enough to run the exact probabilities of it happening lol but arena has a hand smoother so it will be higher than in paper.
@@puraneshi For the record, hand smoother only works in bo1, not in bo3
For someone like me who tryhards constructed but is stuck at platinum its pretty mind boggling how you manage to win so much with so little constructed play.
I have been stuck in plat in limited for ages, so I feel your pain. I used to only play constructed, but since I got addicted to drafting, I have realized that it forces you to really master the fundamentals, which will improve your play in every format. Since Nummy is #1 in limited it only makes sense that he can go in blind and still kill it in constructed.
He lost 7 out of 9 games on the draw ...because that's how constructed plays. If you care about ranking up, you need to play counter magic or ultra aggro. There is no other way. If you can improve your winrate on the draw you will rank up. But why do you even care about our rank? The rank is meaningless, the matchmaking is rigged anyway.
Kenji constantly saying....'I have no idea what I'm doing '....best content as always...love it!
I also had a Qualifier Token from an Arena Open cash, but I was simply feeling way too bad, physically and mentally, to play. I was gonna run some Aristocrats nonsense.
I'm glad Kenji played, at least. ❤
QOTV: "Let's continue to not know what we're doing, and continue to win" lol love it.
I need that sentence on a hat/t-shirt 😅
(XX) Be on the play
(XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX) Curve out
(X) Don't punt
I guess the Nummy principles are still applicable here in the realm of constructed.
I think in general the monog doesn't mind the mull to 5 more often. As you saw, if you have the nuts, it hardly matters how many cards you started with.
Fun to watch. Crazy format.
Format is fairly tame and very fun outside of exactly this deck.
@carsonbos472 this deck isn't even tier 1. Weird thing to cry about
dang, he played the U/W matchup correct in the first match by bringing in the swipes . . . then forgot how well it worked later. Well done tho Kenji!
As always, would love to see a few days of constructed play in the lead up to these events. I will always believe that limited is the best way to play Magic, but as a fan of yours it would be sick to see you make a meaningful run in organized play
Fun content. Appreciate it. I don't play much constructed but when I do it's typically Explorer (or Brawl).
Watching that first Cavalier resolve against spirits in m1g2 brought a smile to my face. It is literally your best threat aginst them and they just didnt have anything lol
Still waiting for you to play an izzet creativity deck in these explorer events. Honestly seems like something right up your alley
@37:00 you probably could have played Kiora first, and then drawn after triggering Hydra. I think I remember that drawing a card.
@38:30 you could have untapped Nykthos to play Trailblazer, if you wanted to.
I think you realize this now, but I would recommend not churning storm on an untapped Nykthos
Lastly, would you mind adding the deck to the description? I'd like to give it a try.
You have taught me much about magic, and I hope I was able to return some useful tips!
So, I know several hall of fame players, I played with back in the day.... (but this could be swapped with any good current player) How does WOTC know I didn't have them backseating me throughout one of these qualification events?
Seems like the integrity of the PT has gone through the drain, together with almost everything else in organized play.
eh, this has been a possible scenario even since PTQs on magic online. It definitely happens, but I'd rather have big online events with this possibility than not have them at all
If you were vs UW control game 1 boarding in rule of law cards probably would have been a terrible idea, I think you made the right call to leave them out
Totally forgot i was qualified for this one, whoooops
What an insane deck & format. I also know nothing about Explorer and I'm good to invest my time into Limited and Standard just a little for now :P
Yeah, this deck is… not healthy. When it disappeared for a few months after karn was banned the format was in a great spot.
@@carsonbos472this deck isn't even tier 1. Don't talk about stuff you don't know
@@AKPhilly It's not tier 1 only because the Amalia and Control matchups are so lopsided. Though Explorer has definitely not been 'healthy' since Karn was banned; Amalia, Discover combo, Vein Ripper, and now this hyper-linear Leyline/Trailblazer version of Devotion have made the format so much worse than the old Karn days.
The problem is Wizards needs to ban like 5 different cards to bring the degeneracy down and they just don't care enough about the format to even know what those cards are.
I'm very confused by the play at 1:38:28 - why does he never play the Leyline? It's the only way to activate Nykthos and get some kind of mana going - why play the Elves instead of Leyline setting up for Cavalier + mana the next turn? What on earth am I missing?
Edit: then the next turn he just plays nothing, literally draw/pass. He ends the game with 2 in his hand. Is there some reason I'm not seeing that he can't cast it?
Leyline of the guildpact costs GGGG and Nykthos doesn't make colored mana without devotion.
@@Jesse110 Thank you - I'm blind!
We playing Yugioh now.

Great effort Kenji
you need to aggressively mulligan for the nuts, this aint limited cowboy
one of my least favorite decks to play against in explorer next to quintorius. either it does absolutely nothing, or it completely runs you over. monoG has always been a high variance deck, where you need to draw a good balance of ramp and pay offs, but with leyline it has gotten even more ridiculous. Sometimes multiple leylines + nykthos are in their opening hand and they produce an ABSURD amount of mana right off the bat (and you cant really interact with it), sometimes leyline just isn't in their opening hand and they topdeck a bunch of them (dead draws)
kinda surprised that kenji often chooses goldfishy decks like this for constructed seeing as he usually enjoys highly interactive decks (like U/R spells), but then again, monoG is probably a good choice for somebody who doesnt really want to bother with the actual format, cause for izzet phoenix or rakdos vamps you definitely need to know the meta to play well.
Anybody know what turn this is? Lmao broooooooo
GG! Sweet video!
To be fair I think the UW tempo deck will get many wins (like in this case) by people thinking it's a control deck and not bringing creature removal
NumotTheNummy, awesome video!
this new version nykthos is so funny
152:30 the fight effects are terrible against normal UW control in this format. It’s normally built around plainswalkers and wraths
heyy i love nykthos
Dude just causally hope into a qualifier and rolls tryhards lmao great games
that decks sucks. When i play against it, i usually go for a coffe or do something because their turns are always toooooooo long. Then they just usually eat a settle and conceed so... Just a waste of time
Magic Arena have handicaps!!! again!!
This is hard to watch.
Nobody feels like youtubers are on the play most of their games? What about you unknown player? This game is disgusting
Take your meds
All constructed decks are cancer..
What a tard thing to say
M-G Nykthos is my FAVORITE deck
