    I’m from elegoo. The reason why I use the blue resistor is because this is a metal film resistor, which is more accurate than the general brown carbon film resistor. The general resistance is ±10%, and the metal film resistance is less than 5%. Of course we are also improving this.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  3 ปีที่แล้ว +137

      Hi everybody from Elegoo! After I published the video, a few people told me of the advantages of metal film resistors - more accurate values even on a wider range of temperatures and less variation as years pass. This is all good - it is very unfortunate the industry chose such a terrible background color for their best resistors 😭 Even so, I keep recommending the Elegoo Resistors Kit: excellent price for a very complete range of resistor values! 😁 I wish it was possible to have it on a beige or light grey background color, it would be amazing!

      As a color blind, resistors have always been a pain in the butt for me. The blue background defintely makes things worse ^^'

      Hi there! 👋 I am happy that you liked it! The Official Arduino Kit is more expensive than most people would let themselves invest in something they are uncertain if they are capable of mastering (or maybe even enjoy) - BUT, the book is worthy, and the official board is more likely to work straight away (some clones need driver for the USB... anyways). Good luck on your experimenting journey - and I am pretty sure it won’t be the only kit you buy (now I have several plastic containers with different Arduinos and parts).

    I jumped into the Arduino world blind and bought the starter kit that came with the most stuff(elegoo) and in about 3 weeks I've had some success. I realized the pre written projects for elegoo were too baseline, they tell you what to connect where, and what pre written code to upload to it but that's no fun so I decided to strike out on my own and make a push button counter with the 4 digit display and shift register however finding information about exactly how each component functions was impossible with elegoos resources and it took me forever to figure out the shift register. If you want the best guided assembly go with the Arduino kit, if you want to figure it out on your own the elegoo is better. Really like that Arduino book the information would have been great to have.

    Very well presented. But, I think I’ll wind up with both. Start with the Arduino kit. Having two kits has a good advantage. You can get two Arduino working together. BTW, I’m interested in that component tester. I’m retired (early) and it’s been nearly 30 years since I worked as an engineer. But, now I am on a journey to refresh my knowledge. The things I invented have been used all around the world. You have used one. A lot. But I couldn’t easily reproduce it as that was 40 years ago. Time to be a student again. Thanks for making this video. Helps.

      Hi David! Oh, I really appreciate your kind comment and I loved to know a bit of your background. I am certainly sure you will have a blast with these kits. Beware: that’s a path to addiction! Oh, there is a newer much more interesting tester: FNIRSI TC2 (it comes with a simple oscilloscope + tester). Have an awesome journey!

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Oberdan! 👋 Thanks! I know! But I guess it feels this way in every generation… We saw these technologies evolve, it looks magical to us - our kids were born surrounded by such things, it is normal to them (so, not “magical” nor extraordinary). They will also see new amazing things evolve in their life-time, they will feel enchanted by those, and their kids will feel “blasé” about it 😄.
      To me the challenge to overcome is that our kids seem to give up very easily. Any hiccup and they stop. Sometimes I wonder if that’s just my perception 😆 Anyway… It is a world with so many distractions. It is hard to keep focus and remain interested on a single thing 🤷‍♂️

    I have rhe Rex Qualis version of the Elegoo kit and it to has the UNO headers well labeled. The quality of the kit is okay for the most part and came with quite a few more modules to experiment with such as an LED Matrix, RFID module, PIR sensor, Gas sensor and many more. I got this kit to familiarize myself with the Arduino before attempting to update the firmware in a 3D printer but since then I've made several green house controllers one of which uses a mega and monitors four DHT22 sensors and controls the humidity based on the average. Hi Philip, thanks! I keep working/testing a few projects at the same time, so ended up buying a couple of extra Elegoo Uno R3 boards - only the boards (no Kit) and extra breadboards. This way I don’t need to undo what I am working on with one board just because I wanted to make a quick test for something else. The Elegoo Boards use the same USB to Serial as the original Arduino Uno (some cheaper clones use a CH340 chip that requires a different driver). This “Arduino road” lead me to buying much more things that I anticipated 😆 But I am having a blast 🤣

    • @Phipanjo
      @Phipanjo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeekDetour The price tag of a single unit without the need of extra stuff is unmatched! Beeing flexible on different projects saves a lot of time. The IDE is compatible on most devices; the NANO board from Elegoo needs a different driver but they provide them on their homepage. The sensors from them are great too! I heard the cloud from arduino is limited in some ways with 3rd party boards, but never tried it. I'm looking forward to build a custom arduino clone on a self-designed PCB. With all the parts I could buy a new official starter kit haha. But it keeps the brain fresh & like you said, it's a lot of fun :D

    Bravo! Very well done and a very good subject matter. I started 2 years ago with the Elegoo kit because it costs less and had more cool extras (you pointed this out). However, I look forward to purchasing the Official Arduino Kit BECAUSE OF THE BOOK. I really want that book! LOL. I have been looking at some excerpts from the book online and I agree. The content is well written. Anyway...thx. I enjoyed and subscribed. Instead, a good online course would still be cheaper and can provide a more memorable/entertaining learning. On the next weeks I’ll finish a comparison about two new Arduino Kits 😃

      A few people already told me these are the standard for 1% tolerance, metal film, resistors - which are the best electronically speaking - but the color choice the industry chose could not be less terrible for visualization 😄. Oh, in the Elegoo Starter Kit, they have the value stamped on the paper strips that hold each set - and on the Elegoo Resistors Kit each value pack come in their own little ziplock bag with the Owm value really clear on each bag. To me the problem is only after you take resistors out of the breadboard and you mix them: then I need to measure them 😢

    Very very quick answer to my questions, way more information I could even ask for, thank you so much. I am reluctant to give money to Elegoo that I feel they milk the Arduino project, but I really need to start fast to finish a very important project, so I will probably buy the Elegoo kit, plus an extra kit to get more motors. I need 5 step motors in my project

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there Guillaume! I understand what you say… There is a whole bunch of third party boards, lots of other brands making kits and I know most of them don’t revert money to the Arduino organization. But, “Arduino” as a whole phenomena wouldn’t be BY FAR so strong if it wasn’t by clones (which are perfectly legal) at a very accessible price and still great quality. I LOVE the quality of Elegoo boards - and they use the very same chip for USB to Serial conversion as the original Arduino Uno R4 board.
      Which type of step motors are you going to use? If it is the 28BYJ-48 (the super cheap one that I showed in the video), for each motor you need 4 GPIO pins… maybe you need the BIGGER Arduino board: the “MEGA”. If you use NEMA step motors, you need to buy proper steper motor drivers, but that uses only two GPIO for each motor.

    Blue body resistors are 1% tolerance, they are better that the lighter ones. There are more difficult to read, you’re right. But it’s but elegoo’s choice the paint of the resistor, it’s the standard for 1%

      Que bien que te haya gustado el vídeo. Mira, hay un canal maravilloso para aprender todo de Arduino, creo que te va a gustar, está en inglés, pero el tío habla en un ritmo muy tranquilo: th-cam.com/video/n838ifEFGTk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0pJ3OTbcz_AW1-mQ

    I am 60 years old and had all sorts of kits on my bench. I learned that the originals are usually made much better, but also that clones come with spare parts. If you are really into experimenting then you will waste a lot of parts, and then clones come handy.

      Yeah! But something I really enjoyed about the Elegoo Uno Boards is that they use the same USB to UART microcontroller instead of the CH340 (that many cheap clones use).

    3:33 I have a recent official Arduino Uno R3 board and the pins are identified on both sides just as in the Elegoo one. They have probably improved that since you made your video.

    Fantastic video! Would you say that going through the lessons in two starter kits is a good idea? I'm looking into buying a starter kit and leaning towards the official Arduino kit mainly for a hard copy of the projects book, but the Elegoo kit comes with a lot of cool sensors that I would like to make projects with too. Maybe go through all the lessons in the official kit (my knowledge of electronics is very basic) and then do some of the more advanced lessons in the Elegoo kit?

      @GeekDetour  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Well... it was, kind of, what I did - I got the Official Kit 2 years before I purchased the Elegoo one (yeah, I had part of the footage “waiting” on an external hard drive for two years). I guarantee you will find something to do with more than one Arduino Kit (I have 4 Arduino Boards 🤪)

      @@GeekDetour Thanks for the reply. I see, that's interesting. I watched another video that mentioned that the Arduino book is a "paint by numbers" sort of thing, in that yeah you follow it and build projects but it doesn't really teach you "why" things are happening. Have you come across a starter kit that teaches you the theory behind why you're doing things or why things are working that way?
