Sounds like my late cat Romeo. He and his sister helped raise a kitten since he was 3 days old. When the kitten passed because of what we guess was birth defects Romeo sniffed him and try to crawl into the box to warm him up :'(. My heart broke even more since I was the kitten's human mom. He only lived two months. The vet said that he had must have been born with something wrong and that is why his birth mom who was a stray had abandoned him. Anyway, on to happier news. I am so happy that CAM and the kittens get along and even play some togrther

He's too wicked smart and super athletic to seem "Downs Syndrome-like" to me. But as the "Cooler" (Patrick Swayze) in the classic "B" movie, "Road House," said, "Opinions vary."
We introduced 2 kitten sisters to our adult cat, and it only took about 18 hours before she was giving the kittens baths and snuggling with them. But she was probably the sweetest cat I've ever met.
So results definitely vary
Can I speak how my cat bit me several time and hit her daughter, just because she was angry/scared from the 2 months kitten I brought😅 like I got scared from her and even tried holding her with my jacket... she went full stray mode loool
I find it hilarious that Cole is laying in front of the barrier all relaxed with the kittens in front of him and Marmalade is in the background. Shows Cole's been through introductions before from the "resident cat" perspective while Marmalade has only experienced it from the kittens' perspective.

You guys do an amazing job with cats but no one can deny that Cole meeting Marmalade was absolutely precious when Cole gently put his paw on Marm's little head to pet him while Chris held Marm. It was, and will forever be, the sweetest 1st time meeting between a resident cat and kitten.

My biggest (not oldest, but largest) neutered tom recently snuck three feral kittens inside. No idea how they got inside, just know that Bubba (the tom) was being all protective and parental with them. Their mom wasn't caring for them, so.... I'm calling them "Bubba's babies", and their spay/neuter (when theyre old enough) is coming out of the big guy's grocery budget!
The car court has decided tom to keep the children instead
But theyre not his children! He has been fixed forever, and apparently just decided saving these feral kittens was his responsibility. So Bubba adopted them, brought them inside and presented them to the rest of the family. And now we have three more indoor cats. Of course I support all my cats' decisions and choices, so....... Yeah, three more indoor cats. But they sure are cute!

AnnBearForFreedom Good on you for taking on Bubba's new friends. You are clearly one of THOSE people that we need more of. I'm sure Bubba won't mind some of his food bill going to his mates. (My grocery bill would be halved if I didn't have one who doesn't care and the other who gets fed on demand every 4 hours with the best on offer or he'd rather starve). All worth it when they sloth all over you on the couch.
That's literally adorable! My big 7-ish yr old boy (all my cats are fixed) loves all my foster babies, he accepts everybody I bring home! He's a really good boy!

(Not just in this video, but other videos as well) You guys do a fantastic job of showing how cats should be treated. Too often people don't treat them well, and it's nice seeing there are people that treat their cats respectfully and with love.

We got pretty lucky when we got our second cat Daisy. Our older cat Oliver was 2.5 years old when my sister's boyfriend texted us and asked if we were interested in a feral kitten that had been abandoned by her mother. We agreed right away. We determined she was about 2 weeks old. And he took to her immediately. It was instant love. I think he understood how small she was. He wasn't perfect. but he tried his best to be a parental figure to her. If she made it past the barrier and ran to the basement he would run after her and and meow until we came for her. 4 years later and they have and amazing bond. And Daisy has turned into the sweetest girl cat. I love them both so much.

When I got my first cat shadow she was always kind of mean but when she was around 1.5 yrs old we took in another cat my cousins brought cuz they couldn’t give him a home and my cat shadow took him as her own in 3-4 days and we got two more cats a year later and she was like a mom to all of them and they wouldn’t even challenge her for dominance either

You've done it perfectly! I had my cat for seven years when I introduced a new cat. Both were seniors, 12 and 11, and it took a month to go through this process before we were sure they would get along! I understand a kitten would've probably been an easier choice for my first cat, but I couldn't resist this sweet boy I saw at a shelter. They coexisted, but it wasn't until the new cat became ill that my other cat really gave him attention. It was heartbreaking but wonderful to see 💓

Awwww, I remember doing this with my two boys. I put the new kitten in my room for the night and they begged and cried all night to play with eachother, even pawing one another from underneath the door. By 2am I was so tired I just opened the door and fell back asleep. The next time I woke up, it was 5am, but it was to the most beautiful noise ever---my two kittens galloping and playing together around my home. I will never forget this. Best friends at first sight. They are now inseparable are definitely brothers from different mothers.
It blows me away at how well adjusted Cole is for a bottle baby.
You do amazing work and are amazing kitty guardians, Chris & Jessica.

I recommend Feliway as well. We were on evacuation due to wildfires for a month and a half and during that time we had to drive several hours more than once and move between hotels. I had 3 cats in small hotel rooms for that entire time and the Feliway definitely helped. It calmed my high strung cat so well that she kept passing out face first into the bed.

This is so cute! In almost 40 years of cat ownership we never had a problem introducing a new cat to the residents. We turn them loose and let them get acquainted. It's never taken more than a day but there's never been any real hostility. Maybe just a little hissing, puffed up tails and arched backs but not for long. Before we know it they're buds and playing together.
That fruit tart bed is almost as cute as your 4 kitties!
Best Monday EVER! Marm always delivers at least one expression of confusion per video. Cole is just a lover through and through. I'm sure the moments will come when he rolls Marm and the girls all at one playtime, but he's just an absolute sweetheart.

Huh, I never knew you were supposed to do some many steps. I've had a total of 10 cats in my life, whenever we introduced new ones we just put the kittens in a separate room for a few days with a barrier up so the older cats could see them, let them out a few hours a day until the kittens knew the house, then just let them go, never had a problem, though I believe there can be problems, I've just never had any. Of course there is some swatting and some hissing by the resident cats, but I've never seen one hurt a new kitten or experienced anything worse than some dominance assertion behavior.
A lot of the steps listed are optional (like the cleaning of the room before putting the new cat there), but can reduce stress for the animals involved. A lot of animals can take the introduction of another animal very well. Others, not so much. When we moved into a house that had a couple other (very friendly) cats in it, my poor Spider hid in the basement for literal MONTHS before she started coming up to get to know the others. She was so terrified she started losing hair and weight. We put a screen door on the basement stair well so she could be in there safe and isolated (it's a finished basement with a wood stove, so she was never cold or uncomfortable) but still see and smell the other cats. And, of course, her hoomans spent a lot of time with her, which helped a lot. It took time, but she slowly came around. I wouldn't call her and the others FRIENDS, but she's not frightened of them any more.
I think a cat that grows up surrounded by other cats is in the best possible position to accept new cats smoothly and, of course, kittens are adaptable, which can help a lot.

Yeah, I was wondering if anybody was going to mention about the Hissing. Really, Cole and Marmalade must have had their fair share of hissy fits. I think that one does not so much want to protect the kittens from attack as one wants to save the older cats from getting so worked up and upset. I recently introduced a new kitten and found that, despite all the rage, fury and demonic hissing, the Cats were actually avoiding the Kitten. To attack the kitten, they would have had to approach it, but they stayed away (perhaps an evolutionary development in Domestic Cats that prevents them from murdering kittens which the Human Beings, their Symbiotic Species, wouldn't understand or appreciate). In my own case, the Hissing tapered way down in just a few days. As the hissing subsided, so did the avoidance behavior.

My method of introducing a kitten to a cat:
1. Place carrier with kitten on floor.
2. Open carrier.
3. Let them sort it out themselves.
We really don’t have the space or individual rooms for anything else.
The resident cat might be hissy and growly for quite a while if destined to be a grouchy older sibling rather than a parent, such as is the case with the current Senior Cat and Junior Cat. Senior was six years old at the time and had just lost her dad and been promoted from Junior Cat to Senior Cat a couple of weeks before. But one ten year old mother-to-be many years earlier was in a state of shock for the first two days after her bouncy daughter-to-be arrived (The Calico Kitten From Hell) but was playing with the sprout by Day Three and trying to groom her shortly after that.
So basically you have to give it time and not freak out when conflict occurs. Unless your adult cat is a psychopath, he or she won’t actually hurt the kitten. Junior did spend her first few hours hanging close to me in a shallow box I put next to the computer while I worked, when not trying to periodically investigate the small house (there are bigger efficiency apartments, but we have a staircase and an upstairs). But she lost any such shyness within a few hours. She couldn’t resist trying to hang out with Senior Cat, not sure if that helped or hindered acceptance. There was a lot of rude noise from Senior for a few weeks, but less and less as time went on. I’ve seen worse.
Junior was about 3-3.5 months when she arrived, looked about the size of these kittens. Senior got used to her eventually but is just a tad belligerent by nature - she runs in through the cat door when she spots a mail carrier or delivery person or persistent little kid coming up the walk, and then gets on a chair and hisses and growls at them through the safety of the closed door (the door is mostly window). She even did the hissy growly thing to her adoptive father (the former Senior Cat, R.I.P.), who at the time was a 12 year old who was sweet and kind to her from the very beginning. On the third day, he flopped down on the floor, blocking the way to the litter boxes, looked at his rude new daughter, and quietly growled at her with nonhostile body language. Must have sounded like mom, because she loved him dearly from then on and wouldn’t leave him alone. He was always destined to be a loving parent, not a sibling.
The current Junior Cat never acted really afraid of her growly big sister, though. Cautious when sis was in a mood, but not really fearful. The current Senior Cat will try to push her around a bit - I remember when Junior was still smaller (maybe about 8 months old) and minding her own business on the porch near a wall, Senior sashayed past her and did a quick side bump with her body, pushing Junior into the wall. Senior kept on walking as though nothing had happened.... Junior looked a little startled, but didn’t move away. (I was having a lot of flashbacks to my own childhood with an older brother.) Junior is more willing to stand up to grouchy big sister now (Junior is maybe 1.5 years now, a lot smaller than Senior but bigger than at 8 months), usually with a boxing match.
Cole and Marmelade seem kindly but firm with the smaller ones, so I wouldn’t expect any big problems with their adjustment. Cole is experienced with having a kitten invader - I think that’s what helped the adoptive dad of the current Senior Cat, he had experience with kittens because he lived out in the country for his first 8 years after rescue and people were always dumping cats and kittens on his former pet human. He came to me with a four year old who had arrived in his former pet human’s shed a couple of years before, barefoot and pregnant. So he knew her kittens also.
Hannah O - part of how the adults react is showing them who is in charge, but it’s also normal discipline when a kitten violates the feline social code. They’re teaching the kittens manners. With really young kittens, the adult will often swipe the paw above the kitten’s head as such discipline. Even at 2 or 3 months, adults really aren’t hurting the kitten when they swipe at it. They are probably keeping their claws in (I’ve never detected any scratches or bleeding on the kitten). The adults seem to wait until the kitten is a certain size before they will even make contact that way.
Even if the kitten desperately wants to wrestle, the adult generally will only carefully box until the kitten is older and even then, the adult is careful to not use full force in a wrestling match - just enough to show the kitten he or she has a long way to go before being a match for the adult. I’ve seen a kitten wiggling her behind from the rim of the tub, ready to pounce on the older one while the older one is lying on the floor and pretending she doesn’t even notice. Of course the older one knows exactly what’s going on and ends the match quickly...
Even grouchy Senior Cat (who acted like W.C. Fields for weeks, “Go away kid, ya bother me”) was careful not to physically hurt Junior Cat - she just made rude noises which of course Junior pretty much ignored. And Senior was at least three times the size of Junior in the beginning.
