    This was fantastic, but what I really need most is a practical guide to incorporating geears into designs for makers. Common ways to arrange drive shafts and how to pick the best gears to simplify designs and minimize friction. How to decide how many teeth you should have etc. There is so much to know and I don't know where to look!

    In 6:1 gear ratio, divide 72 by 12, and it equals 6, so you would know that the small gear is 6x faster than the large gear, this is useful if you are going to make something like a pedal spin dryer, which doesn't consume electricity, so you can increase the speed more and more.

    • @LRNFZX
      @LRNFZX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@heavyfeather6682 - heavy feather - so you don't want the motor to spin too slowly since it will draw huge currents. And you need to consider your desired output speed. Once you know your motor and have the information on the best motor speed and your desired output speed you can calculate the gear ratio and then look for gears that work for your application.
      I am currently looking at my motorcycle and the first gear is too high. I have to slip the clutch a lot and rev the engine way too high so I need a lower gear. The engine input is thousands of RPM and the wheel starts at 0 RPM so I have to put a smaller gear on the input shaft to slow down the output.
      The only problem is that when I reach high speeds the engine will then be spinning faster for the same road speed. Compromises for this torque multiplier.
      The bicycle is the opposite - the foot motor is slow and the bicycle is a speed multiplier.

    • @LRNFZX
      @LRNFZX  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the output is spinning "millions of times" slower? Yes. Plus the drive system won't be very efficient - too much friction. Generators often spin quickly so you want them to go fast - you might be looking at a speed multiplier where the final gear is smallest and spinning quickly.

    For the worm gear, I counted hat there are more then 20 teeths in the worm wheel. Why does it takes only 20 rotations of the worm gear for one complete rotation of the gear wheel? I thought the number of rotations to give it one complete rotation is the number of teeth.

    • @LRNFZX

      I had ignored that until you asked so I had to look into it since it definitely doesn't make sense - good observation by the way.
      I looked at the thread pitch and it appears that there are three separate threads wrapped on the shaft. it only takes about 3.3 rotations of the input shaft to push my thumb nail from one end to the other even though it counts 10 threads. Thanks for the question - it stumped me for a while.

    How would I find the number of teeth for the gears I need from a ratio? I have a ratio of 1:1.25 and I'm trying to find out how many teeth each gear needs to achieve that ratio but I can't figure it out 🙁

    • @LRNFZX
      @LRNFZX  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's 1:5/4 so 5:4 or 10:8 or 15:12 or 20:16 etc for number of teeth

    If the small cogwheel is turning faster, the big one is turning slower because the small one takes a while to reach 360°.

      By definition, yes. The linear speed of the teeth of each wheel is the same but the rotational speed is different.

    • @LRNFZX
      @LRNFZX  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course. With zero friction and a totally different propeller, yes. The propeller is optimized for the engine on the boat and not person power.
