Katie, I was watching an old TH-cam where you were going through the gardening books. I wanted to let you know that there’s an app you can put on your phone called “ picture this” and it allows you to use the camera on your phone when you’re out in the woods to figure out what a plant is and if it’s useful. It’s a good way to identify wild herbs, medicinal herbs, and heirloom flowers and vines. It’s also beneficial in identifying plants that are poisonous.

The gravel area looks great and will be awesome when it is finished. Is the landscape fabric water permeable? If not, how will that tree with the ring around it get watered? I think that ring might be a bit small for that tree . Great work on the drain too Nate, bugger of a job but you have nailed it. You both have worked so hard and the place looks lovely.

Hi Nate & Katie, such great progress you're making on your homestead. All your work should make a tremendous difference in addressing your MUD & basement water infiltration issues when it rains.
Been there, done that, have the well-worn shovel, too. Whew, that's definitely heavy hard WORK.
Interestingly, the soil series you're dealing with in your area is classified "Dunmore gravelly silty clay loam," a very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soil. (Unless you're lucky enough to have some lovely lighter silt-loam river basin series soil as well). These drainage & permeability characteristics are, no doubt, why your pond won't hold water on its own, & why water is so readily infiltrating into this home's basement.
Conversely, in my area our soil series here is classified as Clayey Glacial Till, very poorly drained w/ moderately slow permeability - if we dig a hole it basically functions as a "clay bowl," or pond, depending upon its size, LOL.
Sure was jealous of how "effortlessly" your soil slides off that shovel, vs how our heavy clay clods "glom on" like they're glued on & have to be scraped off.
Wanted to note that about 5 yrs ago, after replacing an old river-rock foundation & pouring footing on a 100+ yr old home, I installed approx 100 ft of perimeter drain tile wrapped w/ Duraweb's 5.6 oz nonwoven polypropylene geotextile fabric & gravel with great success. It's performed spectacularly well, no issues at all - water runs right through it like a sieve into my drainage system. Haven't had any issues with it at all.
SO pleased our local USDA Farm Services reps recommended it to us. It's been amazing at preventing loss of gravel base in areas around the barn w/ heavy livestock. We use it in our garden walkways, under river rock landscaping. Incredibly strong, permeable, & versatile product that's never "plugged up" on us yet!

Excellent job and it always helps to invite a friend even if to just hang out to loosen up the mood and give a few laughs. The tension is real and the stress is dangerous. It reminds me of my husband and myself and he kept feeling exhausted and upset that he didn't get more done......having property is an unending task. Always something to be done. There is really no rush but our personalities like things done and we like to see our dreams come true. We know it takes the time it takes but we get impatient. I do at least.........after years of working on things nothing yet is totally completed on any of the major tasks........there's always more.
I would love to see you take a mini break just for mental rest and stress as well as get a good medical physical done to see if that fatigue is caused by anything else. I've seen it happen with my spouse and he's feeling so good now and thank God he went in to check the fatigue issues. I am sure you know all of these things, just saying, please take care of yourselves and things can wait a day or week, health is the most important. You have been doing so much and very stressful major work. Give yourself some grace and take a mini staycation and just enjoy looking at what you have done in such little time. God bless you both and take good care! 🙂

My Grandmother used to try to encourage me when I was at my wits end just in life in general she would say keep digging your going to get there of course she was using an analogy comparing life, work, children to digging a ditch for you it’s somewhat literal your place is come so far so keep digging your going to get there. Your doing a great job!
