Finally someone who loves a quilt backing as exciting as the front. I've been ripping that salvage edge off for years. Seems practical to me. I am a self taught quilter before TH-cam. I love all the hints and the explanations of your quilting tips. Thank you and please keep coming with the great videos.
Thank you so very much for this video. I am hand sewing a planned reversible quilt, and while I’m just finishing the front side and sort of done a third of the backing, I’m still changing and changing. Also because this is my first time ever sewing and I’m just making it up as I go. It was extremely valuable to me that you showed the backing as well as the thread. I am changing my mind again. 😂 Thank you.
I love your quilts soo much, they are so beautiful and not boring I wish I could do the work that you do.... I know I need to purchase a lot more material then what I have at hand, I live in Canada and I just have not found a place that sells material like I see in the states, but I will keep searching and watching your shows you are the best teacher I've seen on YT...Thanks for the inspiration and Idea's I love learning from you Nancy...God Bless You
HI Brenda - Nancy hear - THANK YOU!! Good luck finding the fabric you love - when you find something, buy it because you never know if you will see it again..Fabric manufactures generally make fabrics once and then move on so don't stall - because i love fabrics i have to have a "real" job :)
Than,S so much!! I have been quilting since 1995 so I have made a few backings and no one has ever explained exactly how you do it. I have done some things correctly but now I know the whole process. Thanks for going into so much detail.
I have been watching other videos on backings and yours gave the most information I was looking for. I having been quilting for about 10 years but never felt comfortable when adding the backing on anything larger than a wall hanging and you gave some great tips. I do have to check out your cutting video because I have a smaller space for quilting and it is hard to cut a large piece of fabric accurately. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your tutorials. I've watched so very many tutorials as I'm learning the correct way to quilt. I've been making "mistakes" for years and calling them quilts. lol. I couldn't find the problem because everything I did was problematic. Beginning with the cutting. Your power cutting video changed my quilting life. What a difference it has made to actually have pieces cut exact. Power cutting is my favorite part now. I have to force myself to not start another project just to be able to power cut. And your tutorials on pressing have made pressing fun. It's exciting to know I will have blocks made exact size needed instead of the fear of "the unknown size" I use to get before I became acquainted with you and your team. Now I'm SO excited with this tutorial giving quilters permission to piece our backing. I always felt like I was cheating. Now I feel like I'm being smart. Thank you again and Merry Christmas
Joyce Burrill Great tutorial! I was given a precut quilt, sewed it together now need to choose a backing. My problem is the fabric is not 100% cotton. If I choose a cotton backing and wash it first, will it work for me?? Also a Colton border and binding? I was thinking of just a binding with no border? The batting I purchased at the time is 100% cotton! Should I change the cotton to a poly batting, it’s a Queen size quilt, I’m also a beginner of large quilts! Thank You!
Thank you so much for all the wonderful advice...I've learnt a lot and I will be really going to be looking at the backs of my quilt in a whole different light now ...
This was such an informative video! I have learned so much from you. Thank you for all the tips and tricks for making our quilting look the best that it can. Love the videos and love you hope you'll be making videos for a really long time to come!
Hi Nancy. Thank you for this video. As usual, your tutorials are very informative. I’m thinking of trying to join my fabric in a serpentine manner, because I will be appliquéing with a flow/ wave set of appliqués. I’m not sure how I can open the seams and I was thinking of perhaps doing like a top stitch as you would a stem appliqué. I am hand sewing everything. The quilt is queen size and is reversible, with hoodies and tshirts on the reverse. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.
Making the backing is my least favorite part of quilting! When I have to piece the back with extra leftover fabric or orphan blocks, I worry that they will come out crooked when the quilting is finished. I loved the idea of using the selvage edge for the seam, and smaller stitches. Your quilts are beautiful!
Love this tutorial! Very informative. I try to do the backs of my quilts justice. After all, I spend so much time (and money) perfecting the piecing and doing interesting borders on the front. The backing should be just as nice, too. By the way, I love your humor!
Terrific video. I would LOVE a tutorial on how to make one of those "big board" pressing surfaces, which fits over top of a regular ironing board. Unfortunately, my grocery stores don't have "spray sizing" available, only spray starch. Amazon.ca charge $20 to ship a $5 can of sizing, and Walmart.ca don't even carry sizing at all. Online tutorials for "make-your-own" refer only to starch as well. Pity.
When talking about your ironing board...you mentioned the material you used, but I couldn't understand what you said. It sounded like 'bonedash' reflective ironing board surface. Could you please clarify just what this material is? Thanks!
When quilting on white you need white in the top and the bottom or it will peak through so I would try to find a backing that is red, black and white. Then for the border use a black top and bottom depending on the design. Hope this helps :)
Hi Kay, generally speaking - no. Not that it's not a good idea. If you are using a 108" wide fabric i would recommend it, those do shrink more than the other high quality quilting fabrics. And if you are using a flannel you must prewash it because they will shrink much more than a quilt top made with regular 100% cotton. Nancy
Hi Elaine - depending on what colors the top of the quilt it, it sometimes doesn't work as well and will show through the top. I really like to use a low contract thread that is a lighter weight than when i am quilting with on the top - i find for me that gives me the best look at tension. i would recommend you do little samples when you are really to see what look you like best :)
We produce our series through WKTV Community Media. Due to copyright issues over music we used in our first season, we could only post full episodes of Season 1 on their TH-cam channel. We also encourage sharing our videos :)
All of our videos - in separate segments are available on this YT channel. We're also starting to post the full episodes from Season 2 on this channel. Keep watching this channel, you'll be just fine! :)

Even though I do QAYG due to past shoulder surgery, this was very useful. Thanks Nancy.

Amazing & very helpful advice ! Thank you !

I appreciate your ideas. I am still feeling pretty intimidated about piecing the back.
excellent thank you
Terial Magic is a great starch product and it reduces fraying. Give it a try.
When talking about your ironing board...you mentioned the material you used, but I couldn't understand what you said. It sounded like 'bonedash' reflective ironing board surface. Could you please clarify just what this material is? Thanks!
It's a cover from the company Bonash - the cover comes in two sizes.
Thank you so much for that info!
What do you do when your quilt has a lot of white background with a black graphic border? The backing is a red/black Buffalo check.
When quilting on white you need white in the top and the bottom or it will peak through so I would try to find a backing that is red, black and white. Then for the border use a black top and bottom depending on the design. Hope this helps :)
Do you wash your backing first?

Nancy
I really need to do this. So spoiled by extra wide backing.
Why would you just not use a colour coordinating bobbin thread which is different than the top thread?
Hi Elaine - depending on what colors the top of the quilt it, it sometimes doesn't work as well and will show through the top. I really like to use a low contract thread that is a lighter weight than when i am quilting with on the top - i find for me that gives me the best look at tension. i would recommend you do little samples when you are really to see what look you like best :)
Did someone take your videos? I saw a TV station with them WKKTV I think
