Breakfast at Pellicci's -- cafe culture and community in the East End of London

  • E Pellicci, on Bethnal Green Rd, is one of London's most cherished cafes,. It's a bustling banter-charged hub, an East End institution and, above all, a family affair.
Walk in there for the first time and you'll be taken back by the sheer energy of this tardis-like place. The sound of chatting, laughing, cutlery on crockery, slurping, constantly shifting chairs... The generous welcome and the cosiness of the cafe make you feel as though you're in the Pelliccis' crowded dining room, its etiquette established over the past 100 years and three generations.
Customers and staff banter on first-name terms, strangers are thrown together and quickly make friends, tables are turned around and plates are brought out at an impressively rapid rate. Always with a wink and a smile. If you can't decide how you like your eggs or you're killing time at the till fiddling with your wallet in the hope that your mate will cover the bill, you're going to be pulled up on it. And then you'll want to come back and have the mickey taken all over again.
At a time of rising inequality, where the face of the city is ever changing, fault lines are opening up around issues of class and race, and cafe culture has given way to high-speed coffee culture, it's places like this that bind together a community. Here we can all meet as equals and put the world to rights over some honest grub.

Pellici's is a true London institution. I used to train around the corner at Muscleworks Gym back in the 90's and this was the place for post workout food.

I Love this Cafe. Anytime I'm in London, I'll come here. It has a real community warmth to it. The Food is fantastic (Steak pie & the Homemade Chips, with loads of "Army & Navy") The characters who come in, are some of the nicest people you could meet. Nev, Maria, Tony and Mamma, Salt of the earth.

I always come for a visit to London from Edinburgh every August and have me self a couple of pints in the Salmon & Ball and then a wander along to the cafe for a late lunch but it's always closed. After listening to Nev on Robert Elms yesterday (One of the most entertaining Listed Londoner's in a while) I've now realised that the cafe is shut for the whole of August. I will get there at some point but not this year, as you've guessed I've already booked up for this August.

The Ritz, Savoy, Langhams is on this Canadian gal's bucket list - Pelliccui's is right up there too. I hope one day to visit and find hidden local treasures that tourists might not know about.
I actually saw this place on Jool's Guides. Great channel
