    this the real example that TH-cam is wrong with viewers and exposing the best videos - this video is perfect and supe beautiful and it deserves 1.000.000 viewers a day and it has made 2671 in 5 days - so I'm sure TH-cam algoritm is vrong compltly wrong . So what do we make great videos if youtube dosen't give them the right expositions this video deserve an Oscar .139 thumb up is mine

    Been using this lut with CineD 8bit & 10bit and works really well. Shot full wedding with it. Nailing exposure, wb & getting it perfect in post before applying the lut is key to make your gh5 footage look like it's made with a MUCH more expensive camera!

    There is a ''HUGE'' difference between the Daylight and the Tungsten versions (contrast, hues and saturation).
    You will notice it very easily when comparing both versions. Very obvious. Worth every penny.
    The GH5's sensor hasn't been optimized for Tungsten lighting (Daylight only, unlike the Alexa). So colors shift a lot (even with a perfectly dialed white balance). The Tungsten version has been made to match the way the true Alexa see colors under Tungsten lighting.
    Considering the V-Log L profile is sold for 100$, and has an horrible highlight roll-off (with plenty of RGB distortion) and quite bad color science in general (especially compared to the Alexa), I think paying 65$ more for making it look totally AMAZING in any scenarios isn't expensive (considering what it truly does).
    It's not only the hues and saturation, but mostly the saturation balance between each individual hues, and the different luma management that makes the Arri Alexa color science that good. This convertion is completely artifact free (obviously, you still need to expose the image correctly and set a custom WB to get accurate results).

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the detailed comment David!
      I must admit I haven’t tested both, but
      Alex (the creator) suggested to start with the Daylight only version and honestly I haven’t felt the need to upgrade yet, especially as my lighting is Daylight-balanced.
      I fully take your point though, and if matching to an Alexa is the goal then you’ve definitely got the budget for both versions :)

    • @davidmultimedia2024
      @davidmultimedia2024 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShotByMyles Yes, Daylight is the ''main'' version, but even if your point isn't to perfectly match the Alexa, i would still strongly recommend to get the tungsten version. Of course, this is just a suggestion, i'm not telling you what to do. Skintones are a lot warmer. Send me a DPX still frame (original V-Log 10bit) shot under tungsten lighting, and i'll send back to you the converted images for comparison. Here is my email : davidlabbee@live.fr

  • @BobOsola
    @BobOsola 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes please, +1 for the shoot/edit workflow! I haven't yet pulled the trigger on GHAlex mainly due to the cost. And also because I currently use the Leeming LUTs which require ETTR, which the GHAlex author specifically advises against. So it seems that the two aren't really directly comparable on the same footage, sadly. I'd love your opinion on Leeming also!

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob, it is on the steep side for a LUT in fairness, but I thought it worth a shot given the work that's gone in to it and with it being made for the GH5 rather some generic LUTs.
      I only have the Leeming LUT for Cine-D which was good but I didn't enjoy it as much when he incorporated the shift in exposure in to the LUT, it made me realise I don't always want to shoot ETTR and it wasn't performing well for normal footage.
      That said, Alex does allow for ETTR while using Cine-D and the settings they recommend for Cine-D are the same between GHAlex and Leeming- so LUTs could be interchanged I think. Much of this footage was actually ETTR as well, it's been corrected with a luma curve but honestly it does take a bit of time to get right!

  • @MrSanderrrG
    @MrSanderrrG 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cool! I've found similar conclusions about the skin tones. Sometimes they are good straight away and sometimes they seem way too magenta. I've found correct white balance makes a big difference with this LUT, even more so than with others. Usually a bump from 5600k to 6000k makes a big difference for the skin tones, too. The skin tones of the model in this video look a bit too pinkish for my taste, a problem which I also have with this LUT.

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah white balance is really important! Even then I see some red pushed in to the skin... I know what you mean about my model shots, I wanted to show the LUT with only saturation / luma changes so it's there for everyone to see.
      If I spent ages working on them to make them perfect it'd be a less fair test and I'd want commission from the LUT creators haha

    • @MrSanderrrG
      @MrSanderrrG 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShotByMyles Yeah definitely good as a scientific test. For the magenta skin tones I often just put a hue vs hue on there and take a bit of pink out. One other thing that would be cool to review is if this LUT is also a good starting point for further grading / if it leaves enough latitude.

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Video Bros. good shout on the hue vs hue! I initially started on saturation but it soon makes people look like zombies :)
      I do some further grading myself after GHAlex (even applying other subtle creative LUTs) but it’s probably down to how well the GH5 codec survives being pushed around!

    Awesome video homie, great in depth analysis (and good footage too). I like the softer look it gives. Did you mainly mess with the Luma settings or did you also play with the LUT intensity itself? That's one thing I found frustrating about the instructions is that it doesn't really tell you what setting to set the LUT itself to (leave at 100% full power or 50% etc) but I guess that is part of the creative side, it will depend video to video. My main complaint is still with the VLOG footage in low light, specifically in dark colors. I've had it happen to me and I could even see it in some of your examples, the noise especially in the blues is really noticeable. I've found myself leaning toward the CineD more often, which is why I'm glad you can still use the GHAlex with it

    • @alexmack106
      @alexmack106 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% ;) (alter strength by Soft/Main/Linear selection) Yes, Cine-D is likely a stronger hand in that scenario

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot Robert! I would defer to anything Alex says about how to get the best from it, but yes I always leave the intensity of the LUT at 100% and adjust luma or saturation if it's not looking right. Keep an eye out for a workflow video. Low light is a bit of an issue with v-log either way to be honest, I find Cine-D better there and I use it a lot for VFR stuff anyway :)

    Thanks for putting this video together. At 3:29 can you explain why the noise using V-Log L and the GHAlex lut is very noticeable while the Cine-D profile has no noise? Take a look a the wall behind the drummer. Is this due to the V-log L footage being underexposed? Or could it have happened due to the application of this lut? If there is a good explanation I would like to know. Thanks!

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot! I’ve noticed noise too, from memory the drummer was filmed entirely in Cine-D so I don’t think it’s v-log.
      You could certainly describe the walls as under exposed, but then I was exposing for the subject and I think that was normally e posed, so I’m not sure that’s avoidable.
      I’ve seen some noise on 10 bit footage with this LUT so I wonder if it’s because it’s lifting exposure in some hues, but honestly I’m not certain. If it’s a problem I’d de-noise or drop the shadows to crush the noise but I don’t find it too problematic.

      @@ShotByMyles but honestly what an amazing pull from the gh5 in the intro. It gives me a little bit of hope, I've just been a bit disappointed with the lack of quality in my footage. I've been blaming the Viltrox for my sigma, becuase I havent been able to hit infinity focus with it etc. Or it could just be me 😅 do you use viltrox or metabones ?

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So much comes down to decent white balance and good exposure. 10 bit will probably be more forgiving in post if those are off, but I'm doing a manual white balance regularly if possible.
      I use the Metabones but I know there's a fix out there for infinity focus on the Viltrox. Honestly I'd rent something else to test or even pick up a cheap lens like the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 and see how that works for you- it could indicate an issue with your 18-35 setup if nothing else.

    Hello, I would like to ask if your course for Gh5/GH5S will apply for G9 as well?

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes a lot of the concepts will apply and I’m intending on adding some videos to it soon to cover the G9 specifically where it differs from the others.
      I’ve got a G9 and have shot a few projects with it now so I’ve got a feel for it, just need to do the videos :)

    Is it weird that in some shots I actually prefer the "punchy-ness" of your cineD lut? The drummer looked better with ghalex, but many of the others (black haired lady, rooftop lady)... I don't know.
    Some shots with the ghalex look too washed out, contrast gets zapped, magenta cast, especially on outdoor shots.

    Want to use this Lut on the Panasonic S5 in both 8 bit and 10 bit

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t recommend it to be honest, I suspect the S5 is full v-log rather than v-log L that the GH5 gets so it might work completely incorrectly... it’s already difficult to use on the GH5 and it was made for that camera!

    so which one should i buy? the daylight or tungsten?

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I shoot way more daylight than tungsten so I went with just daylight. If you’re only going to get one I’d go with that unless more of your work is with tungsten lighting!

      GC HUSTLE HAWAII hope it works out for you! Honestly I’ve been happy with just Daylight... as the saving for buying both isn’t that great you might be better off trying to live with just the one first and saving the cash if possible unless you’re matching to an Arri!

    Can your luts be used in LumaFusion?

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure actually, it depends whether LumaFusion can accept ‘.cube’ LUTs!
      Just to be clear, this GHAlex LUT isn’t mine, but I do give away some Natural and Cine-D correction LUTs in other videos :)

    $35 for a LUT? Are you serious?

    • @ShotByMyles
      @ShotByMyles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's like $60 for both daylight and tungsten I think? The creator bought an Alexa for the job and apparently spent a long time working on it! It isn't cheap, but it's not unprecedented- the Linny LUT is about $600!
